Happy Wednesday!
Last week was a special one for the web team. We packed our cameras and muck boots and headed to Lane’s End to catch up with Zenyatta and her boys.
We roamed around the paddock with Zenny and 13Z (with pockets full of peppermints), spent a day with Coz to observe his new routine, and took a lot of photos. In the coming weeks we’ll put up photo galleries and add new prints to the Zenyatta Shop. Also in the works is a video interview with Assistant Yearling Manager Cooper Sawyer—he’ll explain how Coz is being prepped for the next stage in his career.
Since it’s that time of year where we begin to make plans for the Breeders’ Cup, we’d like to announce that there will not be an official Zenyatta Celebration at the Breeders’ Cup this year. Instead, we’ll hold a special event online that everyone can take part in, from the races or from home. Details will be announced at a later date.
Enjoy!

Word from Coolmore Ireland is that St. Nick came through the surgery and is in intensive care at the Tipperary horse hospital, where he will remain for some time. He’s not out of danger, but he’s recovering with a very long way to go according to reports on BBC. Coolmore says that he has a good attitude. Power up Nick.

Here’s COOLMORE’s latest on ST. NICK:
St Nicholas Abbey will remain in intensive care for some time and has many bridges to cross before he is considered out of danger. This morning he is well and comfortable and back enjoying his hay! We are lucky he is so fit and has a marvellous attitude and temperament which will be vital for his long recovery.
QUESTION: How long would it be before he’s out of danger? What would they be looking for in terms of problems?
carol in arkansas
hi Abigail
I am by no means an expert….but one problem could be blood supply…another could be pain issues if Nick does not support part of his weight on that injured leg…then he could develop laminitis..but these are just conjectures….would love to hear from those here who are much more in the know…
casey
depending on what had to be done (I’m assuming plates and screws and such), bone infection is a HUGE danger, then, managing pain, keeping him on stall rest, if he’s casted, you worry about pressure sores etc. I just spent 7 hours monitoring anesthesia on a horse that had carpus valgus. She had to have the bone broken, then a wedge cut out, then plated and screwed in. Here are two before and after pics (I hope the link will work)

Another COOLMORE tweet about another love of mine!
“First reported foal by Champion So You Think born at Bell View Park, described as “a lovely colt” (ex Soft Landing, a ½ sister to 2 G1 wnrs)”
I’ve loved St. Nick since his average (compared to later) 2 year-old season & have several photos of him in my “Northern Dancer & family” albums…. (When I first started collecting ND & family photos, I thought it would be a modest affair. I focused more on the British horses since it was through them that ND made his mark. Now I have over 700 photos — most waiting to be put in proper albums — LOL!) SO YOU THINK is another recent favourite & I’m betting his foals will be spectacular!!!

St Nicholas Abbey to Remain in Intensive Care
By Blood-Horse Staff Updated: Thursday, July 25, 2013 8:34 AM
St Nicholas Abbey, who suffered a fractured pastern during a routine work July 23, underwent surgery the following day and is recuperating in the intensive care unit at Fethard Equine Hospital in England, owner Coolmore said July 25.
The 6-year-old horse by Montjeu appeared comfortable, Coolmore said via Twitter. Surgery was conducted in consultation with Dr. Dean Richardson, head of surgery at the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania.

This is sort of a talking horse joke. I’m still working on them. A man goes into a bar with a dog and a horse and sits on a stool. The bartender goes up to him and asks him w\hat he wants to drink. The man says “I don’t have any money. However, if I show you something amazing would you give me a drink?” The bartender agreed. The man then produced a saxophone and gave it to the horse, who then proceeded to play a jazz tune. Impressed, the bartender gave the man a drink. The man then said, “I’m still thirsty.” If I show you another amazing thing, would you let me have another drink?” The bartender agreed. The man then put he dog on the bar and the dog then sang Danny Boy in a perfect Irtish tenor voice. Again impressed, the bartender gave the man another drink. A patron then rushed up to the bar and said “I’m a theatrical agent. I’ll give you $10,000 right now for that dog.” The man gave it some thought and agreed, but stated that it had to be in cash. The agent was gone about 20 minutes and returned with the money. The man then handed over the dog and the agent left. The bartender then said “That seems like an awfully low price for such an animal.” The man then said, “Well, the dog doesn’t have any talent at all. The horse is a ventriloquist.”

Roberta TVG has a special they run usually at the end of the programming and one is called Tiznow wins it for America. I always watch. It’s good to know he hasn’t lost his independent and somewhat contrary side. I think Coz is going to have that kind of personality. He already knows how special he is and how handsome.

OK, I’ll tel my Elvis story now. Those of you who remember it from the last time I posted it, please bear with me. My late sister-in-law went to high school with Elvis in Memphis and they knew each other. Elena, my late sister-in-law, told me once that his first public appearance was at a high school talent show, at which time he sang Old Shep and accompanied himself on the guitar. He won third prize. Anyway, I digress. My nephews were big fans of his and Elena decided to contact him to see if she could get an invitation for them to meet him at Graceland. I don’t know how she managed to get through to him, but she did. He was in the process of moving out to the LA area for awhile so my nephews got to meet him at his estate here. He was sort of retired at the time. The way my nephew told me the story, he must have had a real sense of humor. He took rides in his limo to get acquainted with the area and invited them along. During the ride, he spotted a good looking woman and stopped the car near where she was walking. He sent one of his assistants out to tell the young woman that Elvis wanted to meet her. My nephew said he could see his assistant pointing at the limo. The woman made a rude gesture and continued on her way. Elvis was laughing the whole time. He knew that the woman wouldn’t believe his assistant and was just basically playing a joke on him. I mean, would you believe it? I have other tales to tell at another time.

Dear TC GP:
Please tell us more. Must have been a dream come true for your nephews to get to meet The King. Hugs, JB
Sue FL CPRC
You have to share please. The King may be gone… but we still love him.
Thanks TC GP
Terry Crow
I will be more than pleased to relate these stories. I will use what brain power I have left to conjure them up. Its been a long time since anybody has asked me to tell these anecdotes. I am just sorry I did not pick my late sister-in-law’s brain about him when she was still alive. I will say this. The reason my nephews were able to have such access is because my late sister-in-law was nice to Elvis way back when. According to her, he never forgot the people who were kind to him when he was a nobody.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Have read that about Elvis before. Hugs, JB
Barbara Wood (Texas)
I can attest to that too. He had friends here in Waco.
Max
TC. I like hearing these stories too. I wonder what happened to the two who were first and second in that contest? Maybe coming in third leads to success sometimes, as it sure did in this case.

Old Shep is one of my favorite Elvis songs. I usually have a tear in my eye by the time it ends.

Thanks for sharing. One year after a hurricane, the only thing we had left to eat was bananas and peanut butter. We thanked the King for the inspiration. He liked them fried.
Yes, more tales.

Yes, he did. Could never figure that one out. Here was a guy who could have anything in the world to eat and he chose that particular meal. More stuff to come as soon as I unlock my mind.

Mom update
We went this week for the fifth time for Mom’s chemo.
So far so good this week. The doctor examined her and has found the tumor to have shrunk to the size of a pee. One more chemo treatment in a few weeks and then that part is over. The next step will be surgery at some point about a month after the last chemo. Her oncology doctor is just the kindest person. My Mom really likes her and I am so glad Mom picked her.
I am also praying for the horses that have been injured and put down recently. I hope the owners of the horses with injuries have plenty of funds to help those poor babies. As for the offal man that put down his horse last week I hope someday his kids decide he is much bother and ship him off too.
I wish I had more time on the blog but things have become complicated and I only get to check in for a few minutes now and then. I hope to get back to regular visits soon.

Judy,
Thanks for the link. He is one of my favorites as well. I just Love Saratoga. My husband and I were there yesterday. It was a picture perfect day. Unlike some of the dumplings here who have met John and Dottie and Mikey, I have never had the pleasure BUT I did see John yesterday (also saw Mario w/Mr Commons) and shouted out to Mikey (he winked back) (he rode Profitizah by AP Indy) when I gave him a thumbs up! I can’t believe how excited I was! My husband was happy for me since he doesn’t follow racing like I try to do! It was a wonderful day.

Maryp-Glad you had a good time. When we celebrated JAG’s birthday a few years back at the Derby restaurant, which is across thew street from Santa Anita, Mike joined us there after the races were over. He had ridden Mr. Commons in the feature race that day to a second place finish. He told us that Mr. Commons had hit his head on the starting gate and lost a tooth. Sound familiar?

Wow Terry, it sure does sound familiar. I wonder, is that a common occurrence?

Paynter Faces 5 In San Diego
Paynter, sensational winner of a seven-furlong sprint at Betfair Hollywood Park June 14, his first race since recovering from the serious illnesses which almost claimed his life, will have Rafael Bejarano in the saddle.
Paynter’s opposition will include Liaison, his stablemate from the barn of trainer Bob Baffert and a proven stakes performer; Kettle Corn, runner-up to Game on Dude in the Hollywood Gold Cup; three-year-old Chief Havoc, romping winner of the Swaps Stakes, and the always-dangerous Clubhouse Ride, victor in The Californian this summer. Completing the line-up will be the speedy Batti Man, who figures to be prominent in the early stages of the San Diego.
The mile and one-sixteenth race is Del Mar’s major steppingstone to the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic on Sunday, August 25.
The San Diego Handicap is carded as the eighth race on a ten-race program, with post time for the first race 2 p.m.
