Delrene in Carlsbad, Ca
I watched the Hollywood Park Gold Cup giveaway DVD this morning. What a wonderful trip down memory lane. I could almost see my Dad out there in the stands. I now have seen some of the horses, trainers and jockeys that my Dad spoke of at the home where horseracing was very much in the forefront.
To see the stands filled with more than 60,000 people on certain days was amazing. Sad too as this last Hollywood Gold Cup probably had less than 8,000 attending. I do hope something can be done last minute to save this California racing landmark other than shops, dining and condos.
If you were there and received the DVD be sure to watch it and our beautiful Zenyatta and John.
Terry Crow
Delrene-I was one of those people in the stands. So many great horses have run at HP. Even some of the lesser lights are precious memories to me. Anybody remember Mustard Plaster? or Rising Market? I was watching a series called Pioneers of Television on PBS the other day. It showed some old game show clips and Jeopardy was one of them. The $50 answer was– this sport had the highest live attendance in 1964. The correct question? What is horse racing.

Dear Delrene and TC GP:
Glad you have these wonderful memories of Hollywood Park and all the beautiful horses. Hugs, JB

Judy-With all of the postings about Whirlaway maybe you could share any memories you might have about Narraganset Park. I believe Whirlaway ran there once as did Seabiscuit.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Yes, Whiraway raced at Narragansett, as did Seabiscuit and War Admiral. Here’s a portion of a documentary aired by our local cable company on Narragansett Park. Unfortunately, by the time I got to enjoy racing there, the track’s days were numbered.
I can honestly say I do know how all of our California Z’sters and Dumplings feel about losing Hollywood Park. I was very sad to see Narragansett Park close. It was the last live TB racing venue in Rhode Island. Hugs, JB

Really sad about Hollywood Park. I thought perhaps I could get there in the next couple of years. Scratch that idea.
Many of you have witnessed some of the wonderful race horses of the past. You will keep that up front in your memory book just like Judy B out in Rhode Island.

Judy–Thanks for posting this. I remember reading somewhere that Whirlaway’s regular rider, Eddie Arcaro, did not ride him in this race. Could have made a difference.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
I think it was George Wolfe who rode Whirlaway in the match race. Whirlaway did defeat Alsap in a race after that. Also, I think, with Wolfe riding. Eddie Arcaro was serving out a suspension for most of the 1942 racing season. Hugs, JB

In the first picture on this blog I thought it was Zenny and Ann…but it’s Coz! He has the same sweet, soft look Z has…Ann must be the true horse whisperer because they seem to melt in her presence. This colt will be very special and a force to be reckoned with on the track. I think his mom gave him some valuable pointers.

Dear Terry Crow and Zsters
Terry I wanted to share what I found out about Whirlaway. I talked to an individual that I trust what they say very much from Kentucky. I know you and others care very much about Whirlaway. This person is a great horseman and at the top of my list for trusting what they say.
He told me that he had been to Calumet just recently and the marker was clearly there and he was told Whirlaway was there as well. He understood that the Markeys really cared about there horses and it wouldn’t be unusual for them to return Whirlaway.
This feels like the truth and it helps my heart a whole lot.

Have I said that I love you guys enough? My Zenyatta family.
I was having a trying day nothing big but sometimes the small things just push you over the edge.
First Thank You Sandy NE OH I love you.
I was taking a pic of my toilet tank when your note came in to my mail. I stopped and read it and started to cry. It really made my day. I was on my way to Home Depot to purchase a new toilet handle plastic arm thing. The handle broke on my toilet first thing this morning. Then the day just went downhill. I didn’t realize that the water would keep running after I flushed the toilet by pulling on the chain. It was running over and over again. I got that to stop by placing the broken arm thing just so in the bowl. Then I thought I better turn off the water just so Jelly doesn’t think about playing with the plastic arm.
Off to work I went with big plans of fixing the toilet myself. I looked up online what I needed to purchase. I took the broken parts and the pics of the tank. I have a side handle tank not a front handle tank. Wouldn’t ya know I had to pick something different? I went and got the supplies and put them on. I would like to say that it is perfect but that’s not true. I don’t understand what I am doing wrong but it looks just like the one Brian put on that broke. I can’t get the handle tight it is lose and giggly. It is working but I am leery of it and will have to see what I can do to make it tight like Brian had the original.
TC I wish I could have you come over and help. I know you are the man for this job.
Maybe one of my neighbors can help me with it this weekend.
Thank you Zenyatta for my family and tell Ann we love them too.

The Horse Grave list may have the incomplete info on it.
Here is a biography of Whirlaway with pics. It says he was brought back to Calumet.
Whirlaway
1941 Triple Crown Winner, 1941 Horse of the Year, 1942 Horse of the Year
When the famous French breeder Marcel Boussac saw the champion in 1950, he was immediately taken by the horse. He first convinced Warren Wright to let him lease Whirlaway to stand stud at his Haras Fresvay-le Bufford farm in France, and later, unwilling to part with him, he bought Whirlaway in full. On April 6, 1953, Whirlaway died of a rupture in his nerve tissue, and was buried on Marcel Boussac’s farm in France.
His body was later returned to Kentucky, and he is now buried at Calumet.
Whirlaway became a member of the Hall of Fame in 1959.

Yes, I am well aware of this version. The information is still incomplete. Whirlaway died in 1953 and he was elected to the HOF in 1959. But, when was he reburied at Calumet? What seems like a simple piece of information must be available somewhere. I don’t know, I guess I would be happier if I just accepted this explanation and moved on.

Thanks for the info Bluegrass Girl. I was a little girl in the Calumet hayday and don’t remember Whirlaway but do remember Citation and some of the others. Hope to see this famous farm returned to its former glory.

Citation actually ran at Hollywood Park and achieved his then title of leading money winner of all time after winning a race there.

I read that about Weird Al. He should do well. He’s a nice looking horse and deserves a good second career.
Cream colored roses seem appropriate for Cecil. He was gentle soul after all. The horses knew that the most, especially his friend, Twice Over.

@Peggy-Sorry i missed your explanation about Whirlaway on the previous page. It would have been typical for Liz Whitney, the former owner of Calumet to retrieve Whirlaway from France and bury him at Calumet. Case closed. With all of posts here on the blog about Hollywood Park and the state of racing in California, I have a story that I have posted before about Bill Shoemaker and the weekly TV shows that emanated from the local tracks during the 50s and 60s if anyone wants to read it again. I realize that the musings of an old man are not all that interesting to most.
carol in arkansas
I for one would be very interested ….history is always important…..first person accounts are more so
Terry Crow
All right, carol and Janet. Here it is. Remember, you are to blame. Starting in the 1950s and continuing, as I recall, into the 80s, the local CBS affiliate would televise, live, the Saturday feature race of the week at whatever track happened to be in operation. This time it was Santa Anita. In those days, the feature race was always on Saturday. The telecast was hosted by Gil Stratton, a local sports reporter who used to be an umpire in the Pacific Coast League. His signature opening remark on his sports show was Time to Call ’em as I see ’em. Anyway, after the race was run, there was always an extensive interview in the winners circle with the winning jockey. It was almost always Bill Shoemaker, and it was on this occasion. I happened to be there this time, and went down to the winners circle to listen to the interview. Just as the interview started, a guy down by the winners circle started yelling “That race was fixed. I’ve got the evidence right here in my back pocket.” This was live TV and you can imagine the commotion. Security guards were called and the guy was hustled away. The interview then started again with Stratton asking Shoemaker about the running of the race. Shoemaker then said “Never mind that. I wanted to see what that guy had in his back pocket.” Everyone was laughing and they cut to a commercial. On sort of a sad note, even though the race was at Santa Anita, CBS used Harry Henson, the announcer at Hollywood Park, to call the race on TV. Joe Hernandez, the announcer at Santa Anita, had slipped a lot and I remember one time when he called the wrong horses in a race. He called the race as if it were the fifth and it was actually the fourth.

Did they ever find out what “the loose canon” was talking about??? Good for Bill S for not to duck the question.

Could someone use the “power” to find out more about Balance?. Last month it was mentioned that she went to England to be bred to Frankel, but she was in foal and must have delivered in England. The article was dated January 20l3. I can understand if they are waiting to see if the Frankel foal is for sure, but what about Giant’s Causeway’s baby? Hope the talent on this blog can help with this. Thanks.

Dust Commander’s Old Kentucky Home
John Asher | July 11, 2013 | The Voice-Tribue
The sweeping impact of Foster’s beauty and the emotions it generates were on display again late Monday morning in the garden at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Friends, fans and museum visitors gathered there in tribute to Dust Commander, winner of the 1970 Kentucky Derby. Following that ceremony, his remains were buried alongside those of four other Derby heroes: Sunny’s Halo (1983), Carry Back (1961), Swaps (1955) and Brokers Tip (1933).
The journey of his remains from a Central Kentucky farm to the grounds of the museum was nearly as eventful as the unlikely path that led to his trip to the Kentucky Derby winner’s circle in the Churchill Downs infield.

Travers showdown looms for Oxbow, Orb, Palace Malice
By David Grening Daily Racing Form 07/10/2013 9:47AM
The three winners of this year’s Triple Crown races won’t meet again until the $1 million Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 24.
Preakness winner Oxbow, who arrived in Saratoga on Tuesday, will make his next start in the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 28,
trainer D. Wayne Lukas confirmed Wednesday.
The Haskell is run one day after the Grade 2, $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga, which is the next target for Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice.
Meanwhile, Kentucky Derby winner Orb, who worked four furlongs in 50.20 seconds Wednesday morning at Fair Hill, according to trainer Shug McGaughey, will skip both those races and train up to the Travers, which this year could live up to its nickname, the Mid-Summer Derby.

By DRF Breeding Staff Daily Racing Form 07/09/2013
Bodemeister, a Grade 1 winner and dual classic runner-up, was named 2012 Virginia-bred Horse of the Year by the Virginia Thoroughbred Association.
The now-4-year-old son of Empire Maker was among the elite sophomores of 2012, winning the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, and leading deep in the stretch of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before being caught both times by I’ll Have Another. In total, Bodemeister won two of six races, never finishing worse than second, for earnings of $1,304,800.
