Dear Barbara Wood (Texas) woke up this morning in my Texas home and it was RAINING!!! Between my brown grass and all the dust I’ve just about given up on rain. Even my lantana is in a sorry state.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
LOL, VIcki. We love it, but it’s a mixed blessing, as we just had our carpets cleaned a couple of weeks ago, and now we have them covered with towels, because our 2 big muddy-footed dogs are in with us. We’ve had over 3″ inches here already. This should really help the lakes, stock tanks, and everything! (Not the least of which is our water bill!)
Marshall (NC broad)
Dear Barbara and Vicki,
So glad that you are getting some much needed rain at last! Hope this helps with the drought. Hugs

Your rain dance worked, Barbara! So happy for you.

RIP Strait of Dover….if I got it right…he won the Queen’s Plate last year…
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Yes, he did win the Queen’s Plate last year, but was injured later in the season so didn’t compete in all of the Canadian triple crown races. So sad to hear of another horse with complications from surgery for colon problems. Sincere condolences to his connections and fans.

RIP! Dear friend.
Max
Very sad news. He was a wonderful horse. His jockey is a good guy too. RIP Strait of Dover.

Agree RIP Strait of Dover- he was one of my favorite Queen’s Plate winners in recent years – equally as devastating as the loss of another Queen’s Plate runner, Woodcarver whom I was absolutely enamoured within http://www.pedigreequery.com/woodcarver – my heart goes out to Strait of Dover’s connections; his owners, his trainer and anyone who worked closely with him. A loss like that is equal to that of a family member.
Marshall (NC broad)
So very sorry about Strait of Dover — another beauty gone way too soon. Sincere condolences to all connections. RIP lovely angel

Hey guys, Calumet answered my email regarding the burial of Whirlaway. They researched it and said that he is there. He was brought home from France and buried there at the farm. They referred me to a website-The Unofficial Thoroughbred Hall of Fame which has a very long article on Whirlaway. There are articles on many many horses on that website along with photos. Hope this clears up the mystery.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Thank you so much! I don’t know how to let the people at the website that I posted know about it. Hugs.
Max
Shirlee Thanks for this. I’m glad to hear that Whirlaway is home at Calumet where he belongs. Terry Crow will be happy to hear this news. Mr Longtail is one of his favorites. He was a horse with a huge amount of talent and character. There is really no horse like him.

A globe trotting mare like Ouija Board she earned nearly 4million pounds in prize money A great loss to UK racing Happy retirement sweetheart !!! hugs Sheena

Sheena. Snow certainly deserves a very good retirement. I understand your feelings, but she’ll enjoy her time to be a free horse. She’s a real beauty too.

Snow Fairy retired after glittering career
By Andrew Dietz Racingpost.com 10:46AM 16 JUL 2013
SNOW FAIRY, the globe-trotting supermare who captured the hearts of racing fans worldwide by winning six Group 1s in four different countries, has been retired.
The Cristina Patino-owned six-year-old, whose first top-flight success came in the 2010 Investec Oaks, bounced back from a catalogue of setbacks to maintain her status at the highest level and her overwhelming popularity in the sport.
Having missed Royal Ascot last month, Snow Fairy aggravated an old injury on Tuesday morning and trainer Ed Dunlop decided to call time of her sensational career, which harvested total earnings of £3,911,804.
“It is with much sadness that a decision was made this morning to retire Snow Fairy,” Dunlop revealed in a statement.
Last line in article
Snow Fairy will take up broodmare duties in Ireland where she is due to be covered by another Patino homebred Elusive Pimpernel.

Has the Goose arrived?
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
OK race fans – here is a question that I have no idea how to research. Why would a horse go off “overweight” by 1 to 3 lbs? I have never seen that mentioned before, but saw it indicated under “equipment change” for several horses at Arlington last Saturday. I thought the goal was to be as light as possible???
Terry Crow
Sandy-Overweights refer to the jockey. For instance, if a horse is assigned 116 pounds due to the conditions of the race and the jockey weighs 119 with equipment, the horse is considered to be 3 pounds over.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks Terry (and Vicki). I didn’t really think it was the horse, but I couldn’t understand what would be adding the weight – never thought of the jockey, of course :-) Apparently there is a “floor” beneath which the equipment can’t go?
Terry Crow
You are correct. This is why jockeys weigh out at the end of a race, to make sure they came back with all of the weight they left with.
casey
Sandy- when Game On Dude was assigned 127 lbs for the Hollywood Gold Cup, Bob Baffert joked “Mike Smith will get to eat lunch that day” You hear the overweights at the beginning of the race day when they announce the changes. We usually joke that so and so shouldn’t have eaten that steak last night.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Casey – I remember everyone talking about how much weight “the Dude” would have to tote, but it was “having to” in his case (so I guess Mike Smith actually could have had two lunches :-). I guess I thought maybe they could adjust the weight of the equipment or something to keep the horse and jockey to the lowest allowable weight for the situation, but apparently sometimes they just wind up weighing more than they need to.
Terry Crow
In the case of GOD and Mike Smith, or a similar situation, the clerk of the scales would officially weigh Mike and put lead in the saddle to make up the difference between what Mike actually weighed and 127 pounds.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Hi All,
Congrats to the beautiful Snow Fairy on her retirement, well deserved, and a good cushy life as a broodmare.
Sandy, I think you definitely hit on something there with her ears……very Zennyesque. Great observation.
I am so excited about Ebby’s return to the track. I love my beautiful black swan, she is so gorgeous i can’t take my eyes off her. I certainly hope Mr Kronfield can see her run, he certainly knew what he was doing when he bred Zenny and her.
Love to mama Zen and those gorgeous HUNKS of hers. Auntie Sue
vicki
perhaps it was the jockey that was overweight and there wasn’t another one available.
Terry Crow
Vicki-A lot of jockeys weigh more than the assigned weight in a race. Rarely are they replaced for that. The technical reason for a disqualification when a jockey is thrown during a race is that the horse did not carry its assigned weight. There used to be a rule in handicap races that the jockey could not weigh more than five pounds above the assigned weight. That rule was waived some time ago as handicap races are rare these days. Some handicappers really take weight into consideration when they pick winners. I am of the opinion that it does matter somewhat in a distance race, but not in a sprint. Now they just note for the public that the horse is not carrying the weight assigned in the program. But, you are correct. It has nothing to do with the weight of the horse.
Bluegrass Girl
Terry
Isn’t there a formula that 1 pound equals so much of a furlong?
Thought I heard it being discussed by handicappers.
BGG
Terry Crow
Yes, the theory is that one pound is equal to one length at distances over a mile. For instance, if a horse like GOD is assigned 127 pounds, and another 120 pounds, it is supposed to equal seven lengths that the other horse has supposedly gained on him at the distance. A lot of horsemen believe this and complain when the horses are weighted for a handicap. Is it true? I think that it all boils down to whether a horse can carry weight or not. And, if you study the films of that race, GOD could probably have won by 15 lengths. of course, if he did, then he would receive an even higher impost for the next handicap race he is entered in. Then, the connections would have to decide whether to run in that race or seek an easier race elsewhere.
sheena.davies(wales)
dear BGG lovely pic of Snow Fairy She definitely has a touch of Roberto in her hugs Sheena

Sue – it was Sue from Florida who put the team together last year. We’re working on it – it doesn’t seem like they made it any easier to get signed up, so stay tuned.

Yes please if you want to play join us it is so much fun.

Sandy I sent you a message with an invitation. Please let me know if you got it.
I may have to message everyone individually as the group button does not seem to be working. Please let me know everyone I mean everyone if I have your email or if we are Facebook friends. Then I can send you a message. We will work out the details. GO ZENTASTIC !!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I got the invitation but have no idea if it “took” when I tried to sign in. Maybe I should just have started from square one rather than using my previous account info. Don’t know how to get back in to see if I’m on the team.

Dear Sue FL CPRC
Will the team take any new members? I think I would like to try…could really use a diversion. Any suggestions to get started would be appreciated. Thanks. Marty R.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Marty – yes, I’m sure there’s room on the team. We’re trying to figure out a very user “unfriendly” sign-up system. Will be in touch.

Yeah Marty!!! We will enjoy it.
It’s Cappin time.
Thanks Sue and Sandy for getting us up and running.

You might be sending that message for me to my mom’s email. I’ll have to sign in manually since I can use my email this year.

Dear Judy: Regarding your comment on the First Dad and Nelly: It was reported back in May that Neil Werrett, senior part-owner, was discussing the FD with Kitchwin Hills, The Vinery and RIck Jamieson, who bred the mare. The stallions that they mentioned were Exceed and Excel, Fastnet Rock, More Than Ready, Redoute’s Choice and Snitzel and a foreign based horse. Neil Werrett has a stake in Vinery, which owns More Than Ready. The Kitchwin Hills stud manager, Michael Malone, likes Exceed and Excel, because he produces medium sized horses and has a good record. The only thing that has been ruled out for a first Date is a visit to Frankel. But they haven’t ruled that out for future little ones. Hugs KathyR.
