Happy Wednesday!
We hope you are all having fun this summer. 12Z certainly is! He has grown quite a bit, and he now spends much of his time socializing and playing with other colts.
Alys sent us these photos of 12Z having a great time with his buddies–and mom!
Check back this week for the next Ask The Experts post plus an exciting announcement.

Hansen–I MUST proofread!
Terry Crow GP
This is, indeed, good news. MIke Smith is a perfect fit for Hansen. He has the ability to calm him down in the post parade, just about all he needs to beat this bunch. David Flores took off of Zenyatta to ride someone else and Smith inherited that mount. Didn’t turn out too bad for either horse or rider. With all of the injuries this year, this is the horse I am now pulling for. Everything about him is admirable, including his connections.

I want to go to WV sooooo bad to see this race. When I saw this announcement this morning I was so excited. Too bad my pet sitter is on vacation. I will have to make do with the boob tube. Go H Go w Mikey

Great news TC.
Wondered why Hansen was not in the line up for the Haskell ???
Guess they decided to keep in the WV Derby, which is a good idea
and save him for BC or Travers.
Just concerned who he will ride in the BCC or other BC races
as he has been riding so many quality mounts. Hope he stays on RD, may be Besilu will pay him lots to stay on her.
Terry Crow GP
Good point. I doubt, though, that Hansen will run in the BCC. I think the connections have wised up to the fact that he would need every break to win at one and 1/4 miles against top competition. I see him running in the BC mile.

Thank you Team Z, Lanes End, Jerry and Ann Moss, and Alyss the most wonderful photographer for sharing all these wonderful photos with us. I bet I have looked at them 20 times since they were posted yesterday. LOVE them all. 12Z has the look of a champion! Triple Crown winner, Breeders Cup winner and Horse of the Year for sure.
Zenyatta, who I have always referred to as my angel is pure perfection now and forever. With the exception of our Lord she is the one perfect thing that is always PERFECT right down to her offspring!

Looks like Zenyatta still like to kick up her heels.

I love that about Zenyatta. I wonder if she still dances once in a while.

That last pic is his momma all the way! You really get to see his face and his toned body! If he is anything like his parent’s he will be a dominating force on any race track! That last pic is my favorite of “our prince” so far, he is so regal looking! There is NO mistaken who his momma is! It’s almost as if he is posing at a red carpet event, minus the fancy shoes and beaded gown! Haha!

Zenyatta has definitely stamped this guy with her mold. He may not get as tall as she did, but everything else about him is her.

Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
OK, here is today’s question for the horse racing experts. We get exactly 58 minutes a week of live racing on TV here on the “north coast” so I am watching a race at Saratoga. There are eight horses in the race, but the post positions are 1, 1A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,and 7. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this. What is the deal with the 1A? Thanks in advance :-)
Alex Bowdoin, MA
Hi Sandy,
They both probably have the same trainer. If you are betting, you get the (2) horses together on the same bet…2 for 1….
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks Alex. Of course I didn’t listen well-enough or fast enough to hear who the trainers were. Next time I’ll pay more attention. Interesting that it relates to betting (sort of a deal, right?).
Terry Crow GP
Each state has its rules about entries. Sometimes you get both horses, sometimes you don’t.
Connie
It usually means that the 2 horses are owned by the same owner. I have seen where 2 different trainers were in the same race, they were given 1A and 1B, because they both had the same owner. I worked on the race track for 13 years and the first time I saw that I was confused about 2 trainers being together. If a trainer has more than one horse in a race and different owners, they are not linked together.
Terry Crow GP
Sandy-Whenever there is an entry, which is usually designated as 1 and 1A, the post positions do not always line up with the numbers. For instance, 1 and 1A might have drawn post positions 7 and 8 in the field, but they are still designated as 1 and 1A. The horse actually in post position 1 is then assigned number 2 for wagering purposess, and so down the line. I am not sure how the actual post poistions that the horses are breaking from are disseminated to the viewing audience, but the actual post positions are listed in the program.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Hmmm. As I viewed the race (and I WILL have to pay more attention), both horses 1 and 1A were right next to each other in the starting gate (and both had red whatever you call those things under the saddle) so essentially seemed to be in post positions 1 and 2??? That’s what was confusing me. Maybe I’ll see if the Saratoga program for today is online.
Terry Crow GP
It is called a saddle cloth and a particular color is assigned to each number. Red is usually for number one. 1 and 1A would both have red saddle cloths, but are not necessarily next to each other or, for that matter, neither one may be actually breaking from number 1 PP.
GirlSaratoga
Sandy:
In Saratoga 1 and 1A are always the first 2 post position’s and you get both horses for the price of one! It’s kind of a two for one deal! I don’t know about other race tracks? As many times as I’ve been to Saratoga, they always were in red and in the first 2 post positions. We don’t get very much racing here either, but we are starting to get a little more on one of the sports channels! It’s very sad!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Well!! Their online programs are nowhere NEAR as cool as the ones from the California tracks! As it turns out, there were several races with a 1 and a 1A today, and the common denominator in this case was the owner rather than the trainer. In the race I was watching, horse 1 WAS in post position 1, but 1A was in post position 4 (like I said – have to pay attention better or maybe this is all going to be too much for my aging brain).
Terry Crow GP
A person as intelligent as you will eventually get the hang of it. The colored saddle cloths are actually a pretty good innovation by racing. It is a lot easier to follow the individual horse by honing in on them. That was an issue I used to have with the BC. The color saddle clothes were not used and it was difficult to follow your horse. The colors are standard for all thoroughbred races. However, the colors are different in harness racing. I caught the John Denver tribute show last Sunday here in Altadena starring a man by the name of Jim Curry. He is really terrific, I have seen the show several times. He is going on tour but mentioned that he would be back in this area in November. Don’t know the dates, but if he is here during BC it would be a wonderful show to go to.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
OMG!! You had told me about the John Denver tribute show by Jim Curry a while back. Wouldn’t it be something if it was on while we’re there!! Barbara Wood would love it too. Please keep your eyes and ears open (could you stand to go again?)
Brenda S..Ontario, Canada
Sandy, Saddle cloth colors in Ontario in numerical order are red, white, blue, yellow, green, black, orange, pink, turquoise, purple, grey, lime, brown.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks Brenda! And I’ll bet you didn’t even have to look that up :-). That color line-up seems similar to what I’ve seen on racing programs here in the states.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sandy, Terry, & Brenda – Thanks for all that saddle cloth and post position info.
Terry Crow GP
Sandy-I could. The venue where the show is put on is extremely small and is a great place to see such a show. I will keep tabs on the situation and will inform you and Barbara as to what the situation is. I get emails from that place so I will know far in advance as far as dates go. If we happen to miss it this time, go to their web site and check it out as to when the show is in your area.. I guarantee that if you see it you will have a good time. Any John Denver fan would.
Terry Crow GP
Brenda-You have got the colors correct for the thoroughbreds. Harness racing is somewhat differant. Yellow, for instance is for horse #6 and black is #5. Harness programs also make it very clear what PP the horse is actally in when there is an entry. Post positions is one of the most important factors when you handicap harness races.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Great information, TC and Sandy
I have usually seen 1 and 1A break from posts next to each other, too.
Will be more observant, makes sense, even though both a 1 they are two
different horses and could draw any post position.
Terry Crow GP
sign-You’ve got it. An entry is assigned number 1 and 1A for betting purposes only and it does not necessarily reflect what post the horse is breaking from. If there are two entries, the next one is assigned 2A and 2B and also does not mean that the horse is breaking from number two post. It took me a long time and a lot of money to get this straight in my head. I pay a lot of attention to post positions and my bets often reflect its importance, at least in my mind. I suppose that the program could reflect the actual post position assigned but it would be very confusing to bettors if a coupled entry were separated in the program.

@alex – you are correct. horses 1 &1A have the same trainer.

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if your truck does not fit under the bank’s drive through. You might be a redneck if you practice wrestling holds on your dog. You might be a redneck if you have ever opened a beer can during an eulogy. You might be a redneck if you deduct ex-lax as a “moving expense” on your tax return. You might be a redneck if you have never made your bed. You might be a redneck if you can drink beer through your nose.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
How many times would you have to not make your bed to qualify??? Interesting assortment today GP! :-)
Terry Crow GP
I believe the only qualification is “never.” I doubt that it would apply in your case. Glad you liked them. Praise from a chapter president is always welcome.

I’m approaching borderline status on the bed making issue and I’m wondering if you qualify by drinking too much beer and needing Imodium. Good ones today Terry.
Terry Crow GP
Glad you liked them.

I’m still chortling over deducting ex-lax as a “moving” expense. I’m so crude. Did you know a redneck calls a chicken crossing the road poultry in motion?
Terry Crow GP
Good one, Marty!

Great idea, beer can during a eulogy !!!!
Terry Crow GP
I’ve listened to a few where I wish I had a beer. I can’t listen to an eulogy without thinking of the Mary Tyler Moore show episode entitled Chuckles Bites The Dust.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I’m laughing just thinking of it!!! :-) What a great show that was!

These are great, Terry! LoL. The beer can and the ex-lax. Always surprising there are yet more new ones. Thanks.

Always good to hear from you, Vicki.

Is there anyway to estimate how tall baby Z will be as an adult? I know a child’s height can be figured from a bone in the wrist (I think it is the wrist, could be the ear).
Olivia
He is a triple crown winner in the making! Go Mike Smith and Hansen!
Barbara Wood (Texas)
@Sandy in NE Ohio and Terry Crow– I never knew that about the saddle cloths either. Loved the redneck jokes.
Sandy–you get more tv coverage than we do –we get zero.
@Shari Voltz–so glad Miesha is doing better.
Terry Crow GP
Barbara-If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email. Anything I can do to make the races more fun for you I am more than willing to do.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Thanks, that was one I didn’t even know to ask–lol!
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Barbara – I didn’t think we got any coverage either, and then one day I saw horses on the big screen TV at the fitness center and scrolled through the channels on my bike until I found it. The program is called “:58 Flat” (no hint that it’s racing) and it’s a TVG program being broadcast by Fox Sports Network. It’s on here at 2:00 on Wednesdays (or sometimes Thursdays or sometimes both or sometimes neither!!). You might get it too on your FSN station.
Terry Crow GP
TVG, if you don’t have a cable company which carries the actual channel, is usually telecast on a Fox TV sports channel. In the LA area, it is on Prime Ticket and the hours vary, depending on whether the Dodgers are playing a game at the time the races on on live. The exception is Santa Anita, which is telecast over HRTV and is much more consistent when that meet in being conducted.

@Terry Crow – I have an entry I’d like to make in the Order of the Golden Outhouse award contest. I heard it as a blonde joke, but I changed it to a redneck joke. An American, a Russian and a redneck were sitting at a bar. The Russian said “Our country was the first one to go into space”. The American said, “Well, that’s nothing. Our country was the first one to walk on the moon”. The redneck chimed in “Well, I’ve got both of you beat. I’m going to be the first one to walk on the sun”. The American and the Russian both said “That’s impossible. It’s too hot”! The redneck said “Well duh, I’m going at night”!!

Good one Debbie!! I think you should definitely win, but you might have to repost it or redirect TC’s attention as I see there is yet another new page!! Is it just me or do these pages seem a lot shorter in this post?
On another note, I was SO glad that you cleared things up about your last name not being Gustafson!! I was wondering what IS it about these southern folks who don’t want us to know who they are?? Ha!

Thanks Sandy! I’ll post something on the next page to alert Terry. I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought these pages were shorter! I’m not sure why us southern folks are secretive about our last names. I guess my secret is out! LOL
