Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

Another great interview… THANK YOU Team Z, Lane’s End and Charles (you’re completely adorable!). One of my questions was answered and that was regarding if Zenny and Z12 have any paddock mates since all the pictures make it look like they’re alone. (I’ve been wondering about the grey mare and her little boy who were with them some weeks ago.) But Charles did mention another foal in their paddock so evidently they do have company… I guess Z12 would just rather be all over his mother, patient soul that she is.
The two pictures are just stunning… Zenny looks sleek, shiny and absolutely fabulous, and Z12 looks like he’s shedding out to a dark bay just like his mom.
Also, Karen Gogue… what a wonderful article you attached about the late foal. If anyone scrolled past without reading it, please go back up and take a look. It’s a really lovely article that brought tears to my eyes.
Happy Preakness Friday everyone… enjoy the race and I wish all the horses and jockeys a safe trip.
Mary Lou
Zen is soooo beautiful and she has such a handsome little one…Baby Z is Special and yes he does know it, as all her future babies will know as well…Thanks for the info and pics…

Thank you Lane’s End. Wonderful to get to know the team that takes care of the heart of our hearts.
The pictures are great and we appreciate you so much.

Thanks for the interview with Charles. He seems completely relaxed and natural relating what his job entails and the events of Zenyatta’s foaling. He even got a little excited. The people at Lane’s End are so professional and personable and take such good care of their charges. Thanks to all.
How about Queen Z, a first time mom, not concerned or troubled in any way that she had an audience! Gotta love her and her “big” boy.
Colleen Robbins
This interview was wonderful. Charles is a great addition to Lane’s end. No wonder the Mosses picked Lane’s End for this new part of Zenyatta’s career. She is in fantastic hands and looks so healthy, she is just glowing! Baby Zenyatta 12 looks stunning. I think he will be a match for his parents. What a big boy is his growing into, wonder if he will grow into those sweet ears? Keep the stories coming, we can never get enough of Zenyatta. I think we are witnessing the birth of a future Broodmare of the year!!!
Maribel
Wonderful interview Charles …it’s reassuring to know Zenyatta and Z12 are being taken care of by such special people . Baby is growing up fast and Mom is the best racing coach ever . Looks like she is passing her beauty and smarts to her son . Top notch job being done by ALL …THANK YOU for taking your time to give us an update . Looking forward to more always …pictures are amazing !
LouAnn Cingel of Union, Missouri
Very nice interview with Charles-enjoyed it tremendously. Also the pics of Zenyatta and her son are excellent, they are both looking so healthy and happy. You can tell that they are getting excellent care and are not in need of a thing. Lane’s End is truly doing a fantastic job with them both.
Want to thank Lane’s End and Z’s connections for keeping us all informed and for adding pics for us too, so much appreciated. The racing world wouldn’t be the same without Zenyatta and baby Z as a part of it.
Love you more and more as each day passes, Zenyatta and miss you more than can be measured. Sending love and kisses your way
Hope everyone enjoys the races and Happy Preakness!
Love and Blessings to all

Thanks for all the wonderful interviews. Lane’s End is the Best in everything they do.
Of course, the Queen is radiating and her Prince is absolutely precious. What a wonderful place to have to work, of course, it wouldn’t even seem like work when you love what you do all day long.
Best to all running this weekend, may all have a safe trip.
Lots of Hugs & Kisses to Zenyatta and her beautiful son.

What a treat to hear from you, his dear sister. He is quite the handsome, accomplished man and we are lucky to have him at LE. Have you been to the States to visit him and the farm? Hope you continue to post here. Hugs

Holly, how sweet! Being a big sister is an important job! I wouldn’t be here without my big sister. You did a good job. Charles is a wonderful spokesman and clearly passionate about what he does. How blessed that he was there with Zenny at the big moment, and how reassuring that her foaling was so matter of fact. She is a champ in all ways. Are we surprised? Nah!

posted this at the tail end of the last Zenny blog last night. i think it’s important enough to post it again…we have O’Neill and Dutrow running horses in the Preakness…what’s wrong with that picture?
When you read this, please note the author’s references to how punishment is meted out to trainers in TB racing. You may not agree with the author’s POV (I do), but his point about trainers continuing to race who have violations pending is a needed splash of ice water on racing’s face. This article is excerpted on Paulick today, and the comments made by horse people there seem to indicate to me that this industry will circle the wagons and protect even its sinners from losing their business as usual privileges. And then there are our horses…what about them…

Too bad this important information will get buried here. You should post it in the forum where there is other dialog about this.

Aw man, you guys sure know how to bring tears to my eyes when talking about Big Mama Z foaling. She sounds like a pro at every thing she does. Thank you so much for the update and pictures. Always LOVE to hear about Zenyatta. She is truly something special!

Zenny always did (does) everything perfectly, doesn’t she. Like her Ann said, she is a “gift”. God is watching over her.

Thank you for another great interview and PICTURES!
Pati- Queen Z and Prince Fan
Wow, how dark Prince Z will be.
Oh, so my mom called the college, and it turns out that either the lady who set up the appointment to visit the school doesn’t know her own school or someone at the admissions office can’t read because she told my mom Cazenovia doesn’t do early admission. On ALL my SAT and ACT results, it CLEARLY said that I will be graduating SUMMER of 2013… and they sent me admission applications anyway, knowing that I am a junior. Wow. I’m not happy right now. How pathetic is that? Communication sucks between the secretaries and admission office.
Terry Crow GP
Hope they get it squared away. You deserve to be treated as you should be.
Pati- Queen Z and Prince Fan
Thank you. I hope they clear this up to. Perhaps they should consider a better line of communication…

@Anne from Paramount-As promised, here is today’s horse joke. A young male horse named Rightful Image was doing very well in workouts. However, he sometimes got a little romantic and could not quite bring himself to pass a mare. So one day, the trainer, after conferring with Anne, came to him and told him he would have to be gelded. Rightful Image, knowing that it was this or retirement, took the news as best he could. After all, that option almost certainly guaranteed him of a long racing career. After a short rest period, Rightful Image was again very fast in his workouts, faster than ever. But, the first time he ran in a race, he only went about 10 yards and then wheeled and went back to the starting gate. “What’s the matter?” asked the trainer. “You were doing so well in your workouts.” “Yeah, well, how would you feel?” replied Rightful Image, “if the track announcer told the entire crowd that they’re off?”

Thanks to Charles, Alys and Lane’s End for the update. Lucky Zenny and 12Z having Charles in their life, another great Brit.
Happy Preakness weekend to everyone and a very Happy Victoria Day to all Canadians and any US dumplings that would like to celebrate with us.
I’ll be cheering for Bode and Mikey tomorrow and wishing everyone a safe trip.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Guess I’d better get started if I’m going to get there for the party!! I had to look it up, of course, but you didn’t mention that it’s an entire long weekend celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday (later in the week, eh?). Are you having any of that special tea? :-)
Diana Stuart
Brenda – is Victoria Day today, or Monday? Either way – Happy Victoria Day to all my Canadian pals!
And respectfully, Happy Armed Forces Day for those who have served and are doing so still.

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if you have a riding vacuum cleaner. You might be a redneck if you have a belt made out of duct tape. You might be a redneck if you have a beer can crusher mounted on the dashboard of your car. You might be a redneck if you own a pair of knee high moccasins. You might be a redneck if you have a collection of automobile shaped perfume bottles. You might be a redneck if you have a feed store nightgown. You might be a redneck if you have a tennis ball on your car antenna. You might be a redneck if your horse lives in a better place than you do. You might be a redneck if you have ever been on TV not wearing a shirt. You might be a redneck if you can shuffle cards with your butt cheeks.
Margaret I'm ECSTATIC!!!!!
Terry I know LOTS of Internet friends whose horses live much better than they do. I remember one time my horse bumped our front door–like he was knocking to be let in. I tried to bring him in to NO avail! His ears were up and straight forward and no matter how many times I told him this was where I lived NOPE he would not come I to the house!
On the hand Little Silver Charm (resident greeter of one and all at Old Friends) is let out, goes up to the house and will paw on the door to be let in. And yes, he is housebroken! He and Michael love to watch Mr. Ed re-runs!
Terry Crow GP
Margaret-You sound like a closet member of the club. We are always recruiting new members.

Hi Margaret – I just visited Old Friends on May 9 and got to meet Little Silver Charm! and what a charmer!! love the story about him pawing at the door and watching reruns of Mr. Ed !!! : )

LOVE THESE JOKES TODAY; ESPECIALLY THE RIDING VACCUM CLEANER AND
THE BUTT CHEEKS. GREAT HUMOR TO RELAX ON A FRIDAY EVENING.
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Terry C, ha ha ha all of these are too funny! Does using a rubber band to close a sandel count? ha ha No kidding, shuffeling cards with your butt cheeks must be a redneck talent but I don’t know if I’d want to hold the cards! ha ha
Thanks Terry!!!
Terry Crow GP
Sally-Very funny. Your qualification cup runneth over.
Debbie G/Kentucky
Great jokes again, Terry. I especially like the one about the knee high moccasins. That reminds me of a guy I used to work with. He was a true redneck to the core, but he also fancied himself a ladies man. Why in the world he thought this I never could figure out, but he had an extremely high opinion of himself. One day he told me that he was going to leave work early the next day because it was opening day at Keeneland. Of course we all wear uniforms to work, but the next morning he walked in with skin tight white pants, a cowboy hat and knee high moccasins! He was obviously the talk of the whole post office. Oh well, I guess if he’s happy with himself that’s ok!
Terry Crow GP
I’m speechless.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Ha! Good story, Debbie G. There are multiple ways to be the talk of the whole p.o. …like the two finally caught coupling on their lunch-break, underneath one of the parcel-sorting cones (like a large metal “umbrella” whose base is typically obscured by tubs of packages).
Carole Klumb #42 / Eagle, WI
What a great video, very informative. How great Zenny looks and her boy is sure getting big. She is just a natural mother and it shows in 12z.

Charles gave anoither wonderful interview…you can see the pride and love in his face when he speajks of Zenny and little Z. She looks magnificient in this picture and little Z has grown by leaps and bounds. We say it often but it bears repeating. We are so blessed and lucky to remain connected to Team Z and the wonderful Queen herself. The heavens smiled the day Z was born…and little Z is such a “gift”, too.

♥ Hi My Queen!
I’m reminiscing: In 2005 I made my first visit to Lexington. I went to Keeneland to watch the Preakness on their big screen… unfortunately, Giacomo didn’t win that day, but I remember those jock silks :-)
Little did I know that one day…. oh, yes, one day I would be honored to MEET YOU, YOUR Mom and Dad (Ann & Jerry), YOUR John & Dottie, YOUR Mikey, and the staff at Barn 55! High Hoof!
Memories to last ME a lifetime, Sweetie! ♥ XOXOXO
p.s. I checked in with sculptress, Nina Kaiser. She is concerned about making YOUR statue perfect – like you. I told her that she did such a wonderful job creating Uncle John Henry, that she will do just fine with YOURS! :-)
