Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

Excellent Interview! OMG! l2 Zenyatta is getting soooo big. It appears that he’s going to be one BIG boy! At this stage he’s more adorable but handsome, but if he keeps growing so fast he will be in what seems a blink of an eye. Good Job Zenyatta your boy is a real charmer!

Thanks for the video, Zenny looks so beautiful and Z12 he is just adorable. Ingrid.

Thanks once more to Team Z, the Lane’s End staff, and Charles for the wonderful interview. Being half British myself, I’ve really enjoyed hearing all of these folks talk about their experiences (and especially those involving Z and Prince of course). Loved hearing about the foaling from someone who was “right there.” As many others have mentioned, it is SO reassuring to know that our dear horse and her colt are receiving such personalized, professional care. I know it’s hard work, but to have the chance to see them every day . . . . . too cool!

Thanks Lanes End and Charles. Of course, Zenyatta wasn’t upset with all the people around her at foaling. She seems to love people and has been surrounded with only loving caring ones all her life.
Baby Z is getting so big. Hope we can still get photos and updates after he is weaned and with the other foals.
Lanes End you make every Friday a day to look forward to.
Margaret I'm ECSTATIC!!!!!
20 people wow! I’m surprised and I’m not. I know Baby Z was hugely anticipated–but I thought it was more “us” the fans than everyone at the farm!
Again it comes back to John and the way he manages horses in his barn. Having that many people around would have driven most of us bonkers right then but Z? Okay, I can’t do my dance but I can show these people what having a baby being calm is all about!
And oh yes, Baby Z KNEW from first moments of life how WANTED NEEDED AND LOVED he is.
Thank you Charles for a wonderful interview! I love this series!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! What a treat for this Friday afternoon!! The video with the very charming Charles is wonderful and informative and you also treated us with two precious new photos. Wow! We are so fortunate to benefit from your kindness and generosity in sharing our Queen with those who love her from afar. She looks so gorgeous with her coat becoming more shiney from shedding the winter furry look – fantastic dapples. Baby Z12 looks so adorable too as he sheds out his baby fur – it appears to my uneducated eye that he is going to be a dark bay like his mama – how beautiful. Thank you so much!!

THIS IS REALLY FUNNY;
RACE 9 ALLOWANCE RACE CHURCHILL DOWNS
WINNER ZIMMER; TRIED TO TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE SECOND
PLACE HORSE AS HE TRIED TO PASS HIM.
ZIMMER WON AND DID NOT GET THE BITE
I RODE A MARE THAT USED TO DO THAT. WE WERE CANTERING BY ANOTHER HORSE AND SHE TRIED TO TAKE A BITE OUT OF HIS RUMP. THANK GOODNESS
SHE DID NOT OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SWIFT KICK IN HER HEAD.

Sign – Backside55 posted on FaceBook, including a Twitter link to a photo of the bite: “This was a wild & crazy day of racing @ Churchill Downs today! In the 7th race, Woodbourne broke down & had to be euthanized. In the 10th race, Southern Parkway stumbled at the start, unseating Jesus Castanon, who was taken to the hospital to get his L hand checked out, AND the winner, Burn the Mortgage, was DQ and placed 3rd for interference in the stretch. But to top it all off, in the 9th race, Chilled had enough of Zimmer squeezing him on the rail in the lane and went after him to take a bite out of him! He went on to win, but was DQd and placed 2nd. Check this out!” http://twitter.com/#!/DRFByronKing/status/203670743769296896/photo/1

Thank you Charles for a wonderful informative video. I admire you and all you have done in your short years….and admire you that you get to do something every day that you so love and enjoy. It was wonderful hearing about Zenyatta and her foaling. She had been so special on the track….the Queen…….but now she is still so special……and she is the Mom. Whatever she does …..she does it with ease and intelligence. Her foal is adorable and love hearing the stories about him being so cute and feisty. This was a nice surprise on a TGIF. Also thanks again to Ann and Jerry Moss for sharing Zenyatta and now her foal with us fans. I love seeing you Ann …..in the pictures with Zenyatta……the connection between you two is wonderful and amazing….beautiful to see.
Jenna
Wow. He’s cute. Zenyatta’s a lucky girl :>
Ann Maree / Tennessee
Thank you for posting this….really gave me goosebumps and tears listening to his description of how he felt when she was foaling….he has witnessed lots of foalings, yet, here was Zenyatta, the Great Z, having her foal, and he was moved and excited. He’s growing like a weed and is filling out nicely. Hope John comes to see him soon…can’t wait to see his reaction….I know he’s been keeping up with webcams, etc., but I want to see John’s reaction when he looks at this little guy in person and looks at those legs!! Hugs to all at LE and Team Z…Ann Maree

It’s just wonderful to see and hear of the progress of Zennyatta and little Z. They appear happy and content. Thanks for the regular updates to fill in the details for us. The interviews with those on the farm are comforting…I’m so happy that Zenyatta and baby are surrounded by people who love and appreciate them.. They are, after all, very, very special! I still love to watch the videos of the DANCING QUEEN! J.F.

Thank you Lane’s End and Team Zenyatta for sharing this interview with us. Charles is a Hottie! If a mare can appreciate human beauty I’m sure Z and all the mares love to be taken care of by this handsome young man who obviously cares very deeply about horses and the mares at Lane’s End.
Zenyatta is looks wonderful as always. Prince Z12 is growing so fast!
I do miss Zenyatta’s diary entries, but I know that her focus and her Teams focus is on her health and her baby.
Thanks again!
tony
Zenny, you look so great in this latest photo and your “prince” seems to take after you.
Like others here, I’m glad we can continue to follow your life and meet those who are now entrusted with your care, They are very lucky people. Thanks to the Mosses who seen to understand our desire to be a part of Zenny’s life.

Thank you, Charles Campbell
Very nice “scoop” on Zee & Weezee :)
I think they’re really well taken care of by people who like their jobs. Zee is showing some, isn’t she? And Weezee seems to have that famous Zee neck at least in the pic above and he’s starting to get a little mane. Just too cute :)
Thanks for keeping us posted. :)

@ Ann Maree/Tennessee
Interesting, your opinion on Weezee’s legs. they really strike me as super strong, & long. Big stride. Isn’t that important? The bigger the stride the bigger the airflow into the lungs the less tiring during the race?
Diana Stuart
Sunny, I was just going to post about Baby Z’s legs but you beat me to it! He has really great bone in those legs! No toothpicks there. Sturdy build – like mom Z. I am so happy to see these traits in him. Go baby go baby go!

Lane’s End staff and Team Z.–you know we just LOVE these updates. Charles does a great interview. BTW, the girl I talked to at SA when I was making arrangements for BC 2012 is a friend of his. He seems super-nice. It was so touching to know details about the foaling. I am so thankful that Mama Z. did not feel fear because those she loves were nearby! Love you always, Big and Little Zs!
Diana Stuart
Barbara, I was also happy to hear of his educational background. As one who has taken lots of biology and biochemistry and zoology classes for my degree programs, I’m thrilled that LE hires superbly educated people for their staff. Charles is a complete package!

Sign,
Kind of stupid, hey, but I’m sick of calling this beautiful colt Z12, it’s so impersonal! I shall call him that until he finally receives his real name……hope that isn’t two years old. Ha,ha. Hugs

Ha Ha, Zenny, not one to miss a meal. Love that she was snacking right up to the big event.

Yes, she’s got her priorities straight!
Marty R / Colorado
I am so enjoying this series of interviews and getting to meet the Lane’s End staff who are taking care of Zenyatta, 12Z and all the future “Little Zs” Since the three we’ve met so far started out their horse love affairs by riding, I’m wondering if they ever get chances to ride now?
I think I’m as excited about Zazu racing today as I am about the Preakness. I hope all horses and riders in all the races everywhere have safe runs and come out of them healthy.
As always, thank you to Lane’s End for your time and to Mr. and Mrs. Moss for continuing to allow us to keep up with the life of Zenyatta.
