Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

I agree with you, Susan. It was partuicularly beautiful when adorned with roses from MTB’s Derby win.

Wow! That is something great. That is my hunch. I bet on him in both races, and, I will bet again. In addition, he will win the Triple Crown. Ingrid.

I visited Barn 55 on Saturday – Ebby is in EXCELLENT hands with John Shirreffs! IMO she is still in growing pains – she just has to mature and grow into those gorgeous legs :-) All 17 hands!! She is as docile and sweet as her half sis, Zen! xoxo
One thing we MUST remember – these are two different horses – let’s not try to put so much pressure on Big Ebby. Let’s let her be her own person :-)

I’m glad you mentioned this. I have felt this for so long…Zenny is a once in a lifetime horse. I have no doubt Ebby will be good on the track but it will be hard to duplicate the Queen’s record or accomplishments. Even Zenny’s little prince will have large hoofs to fill when it comes to his mom.

I am going to deviate slightly from my horse jokes as this is one I told to the dumplings during last year’s Gold Cup. It came to me again recently and I want to “tell” it before I forget it. It is slightly reworked in honor of one of our most respected posters. Shari Voltz was trying to figure out a fun project for her homeroom class when this idea came to her. She decided to bring in a number of exotic meats, have the class taste them, and see if they could identify what they had eaten. The class successfully identified rabbit, buffalo, veal, squab and ostrich. The next time, Ms. Voltz brought in venison. The class tasted it, but nobody could identify it. Ms. Voltz then told the class “I’ll give you a hint. It’s what your mother sometimes calls your father.” “Don’t eat it, ” screamed a little boy. “It’s jackass.”

Here are today’s redneck jokes. You might be a redneck if you wear bib overalls to a funeral. You might be a redneck if you can’t take a bath because beer is being iced down in the tub. You might be a redneck if you have a hook in your shower to hang your baseball cap on. You might be a redneck if the main course at your potluck dinners is roadkill. You might be a redneck if you say “fixin to” instead of “about to.” You might be a redneck if your dog’s shots are current but your children’s aren’t. You might be a redneck if you think Purina is some kind of ex-lax.
Susan Carothers (in TN)
Your RN jokes today read like a documentary :)

Thank you Terry Crow GP. I am from the racing (Nascar) state of NC. We transport moonshine fast!!!!
I’m a fixin to pour a round of shots tonight w/ “the friends”, in honor of the RN club.

a couple of really classy guys! good for them!
Max
Sign. Nice article. Mike and Mario are great people and class acts. Both always give full credit to the horse.
Keta
I saw an interesting interview with Mike Smith.
One of the lesser-informed reporters covering the Preakness asked him about Mario. The reporter thought Mario had been California-based for awhile.
Mike quietly corrected him–pointing out that Mario was a recent arrival.
But, here is the important part, Mike said that Mario is next to him in the jockey room. Mike talked about what a polite nice young man he is.
So, they have connected on a personal level & Mike thinks highly of Mario.
Max
Keta. Both of these guys are gems. My favorite comment from Mike was when he said that no stallion would ever be really good enough for Zenyatta. He loves Z. I think that Mario must love IHA from the way that he talks about his horse.

I think she just might indeed! After all, who (in their right mind) could not like “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road”? Oh my, that would “stink to high heaven”! Ha-Ha!
Ann
Nice to meet you MarshallNC. Glad to be in the RN club. I will uphold the duties as best can be.
Now this skunk song. Where does one find it? I will hold my nose and listen to it. Growing up I had a bird dog….well many a night she came home w/ the o-de-pew on her. She wore it so proudly too. That is one of many skunk stories we shared together. She was quite a dog.
So, I think this song and I will get along real fine, seeing as how I respect that stripped critter.

I’ve missed so much over the weekend – trying to catch up now. Re: Victoria Day – it’s always celebrated on a Monday and it’s always the week before Memorial Day. It’s one holiday that Canada manages to get a long weekend from, unlike Canada Day which is always on July 1st no matter what day of the week. This year we will be O.K. since the 1st is on Sunday and we’ll celebrate on Monday.
I did have some special tea on Saturday to support Bode and Mikey, perhaps I should have drunk an extra glass!! Vic is ecstatic that I’ll Have Another won and so now we’re both hoping for a Triple Crown winner with good Canadian connections. Saturday was a good day for Vic, she got the news that she’s been awarded a sum of money to help with her college expenses. I am hoping for more similar responses to the applications that we have submitted, then I won’t feel so bad about my Bucket List trip to Santa Anita in November.

Well, Zenster’s I just got some very sad news from my Mom. My Uncle passed away on Saturday Evening. I didn’t even know that he was sick. According to my mom, she said that he was wheelchair bound for the last few years but, he died in his sleep. I have been out of contact with most of my family due to my lifestyle and them, not accepting it. None the less.. Putting that aside, I will miss my Uncle very much and remember being out in the corn fields in HUGE tractors tending the corn. Riding his grey gelding whenever I had a chance and hunkering down when storms hit S.Dakota. One of my fondest memories was when he took me out in one of the HUGE tractors, had me on his lap and let me steer and drive. That was so much fun and such a special time! I will always love you Uncle Marv, say Hi to dad when you see him! RIP!!

Karen, Thank you so much for sharing that read. I love Steve Haskin’s articles. He writes like he is talking to any novice or any very experienced horse person, friendly and easily understood by whatever level a person may be at.
Question: I just subscribed to BloodHorse about 8 weeks ago. Have always received my magazines on Fridays and they were sealed in plastic covering. This past week it was a day late and not sealed. I smell a skunk? Anyone know if this normal? Terry, Grand Poobah, you know anything about this???
Sally B. (cherish Z- Wi.)
Darlene, that is how mine came this past Sat. (without the thin plastic wrap)
I thought the same thing. I will see whether the next one comes the same way this week. (Postal workers getting a read at break time?)
Debbie G/Kentucky
Mine came the same way too, but that’s the way they were sent out. I know this because I delivered several on the mail route. I think it’s because the ones that were wrapped in plastic had a special advertising insert glued to the outside and the mail processing machines might have torn the insert off if it wasn’t wrapped. That’s not to say that we don’t get a little read in every now and then at break time though, Sally! LOL

It was an especially good edition. Since I don’t subscribe, I have to get it some way.

All the trainers are gearing their best horses and riders for the Belmont;

Had to stand around for a couple of hours.
Phenomenal that he made the transition.

Sign. I think that Lava Man must be a very intelligent horse so that he understands what is expected of him and acts on it. The same seems to apply to Zenyatta. She can handle any situation because she is so smart. Both also have social dispositions with very positive good natures.

He looks beautiful w/ the western and the english tack. Sometimes a horse can’t pull that off. Lava knows how to work it. He is one of the most entertaining horses I have seen in awhile.I’m trying to find the video of him breezing down the track, that is stunning. He looks from side to side, goes by the other horses as if to say…yeah, I love my job!
Thanks for the article from the Balt sun.

Thank you Sign for this link of Lava Man. I wish I could have followed him when he raced!! He excelled in his racing career and now is an awesome pony ; how great is that. I’ll Have Another is a very lucky horse to have LM keeping him “ready and calm” before the race.

LAVA MAN’S GRAND SIRE IS THE GREAT CHAMPION SEATTLE SLEW !!!!

Sign. I am definitely impressed. Slew had a powerful personality himself. It looks like he has passed on some of that to the Man.
