Happy Friday!
We hope everyone is gearing up for the Preakness and some beautiful weather this weekend.
The third part of our Lane’s End interview series introduces you to Charles Campbell. He has been the Broomare Manager for four years, and he was with Zenyatta the night she foaled.
Charles Campbell, Broodmare Manager:
“I’m originally from a small hamlet in England, and I was brought up on a farm where my parents trained and produced racehorses. I was riding an jumping fences before I could walk and have always had a love for horses from this young age.
After graduating from university I decided to travel the world working with horses. I started in South Africa and made it to America. As soon as I arrived at Lanes End I fell in love with the farm and horses here. I worked with the yearlings and then did a season with the stallions before moving to the mares. I find working with the mares and foals the most rewarding aspect of all as it encompasses my interest for science and passion for horses.
As the Broodmare Manager my days are kept busy with reproductive work and insuring all the mares and foals are happy and healthy, including Zenyatta and Baby Z.”
Here are a couple photos that were taken yesterday at the farm.
Enjoy!

Interesting Quote by Garrett Gomez (Zazu’s jockey) from Betfair Hollywood Park News
GARRETT GOMEZ, SISTER MOON, Second: “I can only ride them if they go straight. From the time I left the gate she wanted to drift with me. I couldn’t get her any closer to the fence. You could see her on the turn, her head was turned sideways. I couldn’t hold her in there anymore without taking too much away from her. Turning for home, I let her go to the middle of the race track, thinking that maybe she’d run. I even went to the last resort of hitting her left handed, but there really wasn’t a lot there. She didn’t run horrible, just not the way she was expected.”
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Wonder what is going on with her???
Keta
Sign,
I was wondering what was going on with him?
If riding horses that only go straight was the secret to being
a successful jockey, then there are lots of potential riders out there.
If you get a chance, review his ride on Zazu.
I don’t think it was her fault this time.
Perhaps she is tempermental–good jockeys get the best of these horses.
Keta (Maybe a little cranky at this time of night.)
Keta
Keta note;
Remember Garrett is talking about his ride on SISTER MOON
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Keta and Sign:
I watched the replay of Zazu’s race. I think he really reigned her in hard toward the rail right after the break. Then he tried to make a move and she didn’t seem to respond. She may have been confused with what he wanted her to do. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dah!!! Thanks Keta.
Did not see Sister Moon, not Zazu.
I saw the race with him riding Zazu, being
Tempermental is not a bad thing it is a personality
Issue horses have. She has had three jockey’s
Including Mike Smith, who have won for awhile
On her and then not done well. That says something.
I did not see anything wrong with his ride, perhaps
She did not like being buried and covered up
On the rail and then when asked to run she just
Had nothing.
Will look for John Sadler’s comments; filly’s and mares
Have their bad days more than the colt. Maybe it
Was just an off day.
Being tempermental means the rider has to be very
Extremely sensitive to the horse and what they are
Feeling and then figure out how you can finesse what
You need or want from them.
Darlene Daniels
Keta, Thank you for all of the links you share.
Please explain to someone like me, eager to learn, but naive. What is the difference of “hitting on the left” verses hitting on the right?? Garrett Gomez said he went to the last resort and hit on the left. What does that mean? Thank you Keta!
Terry Crow GP
Darlene-It merely means that he used the whip on the horse’s left side. One of the basic skills that a jock must develop is switching the whip from side to side, in other words from one hand to another.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear TC, GP

Sharon, It made me sick to my stomach too. I didnt know either at the time it happened. Also, the fate of Fernidand caused me to grieve of cry uncontrollably for weeks after I learned his sad and deplorable fate. I still cant deal with it. Wish I was stronger and richer (monetarily) to make sure things like this never happen again.
Terry Crow GP
I am glad that more people are learning about Alydar’s story. It was a big scandal at the time but little is mentioned today. You can bet his death was no accident. With Calumet being in the news lately I would have thought that this story would have received a lot of publicity, but it didn’t happen.

Dear GP TC, Darlene, Sharon and Z Fans:

Lava Man is a millionaire, right? And he has a job, right? And he serves Doug O’Neill, right? So what’s with the dirty, rusty door to his stall? Can’t O’Neill spring for better quarters for this great horse who is doing more public relations for him, free, than a marketing company? It’s upsetting to see the outside of that stall…and maybe i’m being too sensitive–but he deserves better.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Any experience with barn life and barns???
Take a look at Zenny’s stall at Barn 55, not the
Most up scale. A barn is not meant to be beautiful,
Of course unless a horse lives at Lanes End, it is
The people and the horses at the bar that make the
Barn.
I rode with a trainer that was fairly no frills, she had
A new possible client that had to decide between
A cement floor barn with some amenities and a
Trainer that could connect with her horse who
Had been bullied into submission by the trainer
Who had the cement floor barn.
She came to her senses and brought her horse
To the no frills barn and has been riding a winning
Eventer since she changed barns.
Darlene Daniels
Signofthetimes, I appreciate you response. May I please take a moment to remind humans, that when and if placing their loved ones in nursing home facility, bigger, better and prettier may not exactly be what they truly want for their loved ones. It is the staff that matters, not the fancy cosmetic esthetics. Sorry, I know this is off the mark of TB’s and their barns but the sentiment and reason is the same.
Darlene Daniels
Sign. I understand! Thank you for all you share. Hugs and kudos to you!
Pati- Prince Z Future TC Winner
If you can find a link and post one of the inside of the barns at Gainesway, WOW they are something else! They are as beautiful as the ones at Lanes End, and Afleet Alex is there, so you know it is a high class place.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Actually, no. He can’t. Neither O’Niell nor any other trainer owns the physical barn facilities. The track does. All track barn stalls pretty much look the same–cinder block walls and dirt floors. They’re utilitarian, not fancy. What’s important is that they are clean and safe, and Lava Man’s stall appears to be, with a nice pile of fresh straw. I suppose O’Niell could have the door painted, but Lava Man wouldn’t care. Even assuming a prettier stall were available somewhere on the track, it would be impractical to move a pony away from the people and horses he works with.
Terry Crow GP
I see both points of view here. LauraJ is quite correct when she states that the track owns the barns. The horses are unable to voice their opinions.
Zenyen
Well, in a way Lava Man did voice his opinion.
He was originally retired to a nice farm and the leisurely life being turned out and probably having a ‘pretty’ stall.
He HATED IT and so was returned to the track to begin life as a pony.
Terry Crow GP
Lava Man was originally brought out of retirement to race again. He even had experimental stem cell therapy in an attempt to return him to a semblance of what he once was. Didn’t work. You’re right, Zenyen. He is only happy at the track.
Ann
All I see is LOVE. It is written all over those barn walls.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Love, love, love the articles, links, and videos about Lava Man. Especially love the one where he saunters over and opens the food bin. I SO know one of his kin right here who would LOVE to do that. Not telling any names, but he would stop at his neighbors’ stalls on the way to his own in the barn for a bite “to go”.

For humans…..infertile and sterile do not mean the same thing….
is it different for horses?
A lot of you guys know a great deal about horses of all kinds …
I was just wondering……because a stray thought crossed my admittedly confused mind
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Infertile and sterile can be used interchangeably,
Sterile can mean no sperm in males, whereas
Infertile may mean low sperm count, immobile
Or deformed sperm.
carol in utah
Thanks …that is what I thought…been reading about Assault…infertile but was able to pasture breed a couple of foals on ranch…recently read something about “pasture rest” not having improved Cigars fertility much…that means someone is checking…doesn’t it?
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Poor Assault. Yes, he was able to pasture breed, but his mares were Quarter Horses, IIRC. Maybe he just didn’t like TB mares?
I think they tried pretty much everything with Cigar, to no avail. He appears to have zero fertility. I have no way of knowing, but I would speculate that they don’t test him anymore. He is 22 now. Even a normal 22=year-old stallion could be experiencing declining fertility, and some are already being pensioned at that age.
Zenyen
Then you have frustrating cases like War Emblem.
Its been awhile since I read any updates but I believe what few foals they have been able to get from him his stakes win percentage is insane which makes it worth the effort to keep trying I suppose.
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Red Bullet’s another one. He was technically not infertile, but had a low in-foal rate. His runners, however, were good. he was pensioned last year due to declining fertility at the young age of 14.
Terry Crow GP
Again our resident expert is correct. Assault is the only triple crown champion to return to racing once he was retired because of this issue.

Matz should have been more cognizant of racing history when he laughed at the notion of a horse running in another race and then in the Belmont. That is exactly what Citation did the year he won the triple crown. Won that extra race, too. Of course, I doubt any trainer would do that today.
Ann
……..And so called advise came from a groom of Damascus, which means he worked w/ the great Frank Whitely. Would not be snubbin those greats.
Got to read racing history so it can repeat itself. I’d like to pick his brain…the groom of Damacus, not Matz, he does too much head scratching. Ha , just kiddin.
More pickin, less scratchin. That would be my racing barn motto! We’d be pickin and a grinnin by living that motto.

I know- that is hard to believe!
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
No they sure wouldn’t. High class horses were run a lot more than they are now, up until the 1990s. Our good buddy Gulch, now at Old Friends, ran six times as a juvenile. He began his three-year-old campaign with four Derby prep races. He ran in all three Triple Crown races, and also won the Metropolitan Handicap between the Preakness and the Belmont. (Old Friends tour guides love to bring that up.) After the Belmont he took a couple of months off, then ran in six races between August 8 and November 21. As a 4-year-old, he raced 11 times between March and November.
I got curious about some of the 1990s horses and their work load. Silver Charm, who won the Derby and Preakness in 1997, is an iron horse by today’s standards. He ran from age 2 to age 5. He ran 9 times from August 1996 through June of 1997. He took a few months off, then returned in late December of 1997. He ran 13 times between December 26, 1997 and June 12, 1999 including a trip to Dubai. He did have a couple of breaks, but also had periods where he was racing every three or four weeks.
Terry Crow GP
LauraJ-Thanks for your very informational post. Couldn’t agree with you more. One of the first handicapping angles I learned, from the dark ages, was that 80% of the races were won by horses who had run within the past 15 days. Doesn’t apply any more.

Here is today’s sort of a horse joke. A horse was talking to a bull. “I would love to be able to get to the top of this tree,” said the horse, “But I just don’t have the energy.” Nibble on my droppings,” said the bull. “they have been known to have many nutrients which will help you to build up your energy.” The horse decided to take the bull’s advice and started to eat the manure. The first day, he was able to get to the bottom branch. After about a week of this diet, the horse was able to get to the very top. At that point, he was spotted by a farmer who had him removed from the tree. Moral of the story? BS might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.

Terry, your “postman uses rubber gloves” got me thinking… there have been a couple of recent Postal references, and it reminded me of many years ago as a Postal employee:
You might be a 70’s redneck, if you thawed a frozen chicken you bought, but discovered it was already spoiling, so you decided to mail a drumstick back to the market, in a large envelope.
You might be a 70’s postal redneck, if you found that drumstick “letter” in the Post Office, and trying not to breathe, plastic-wrapped it as quickly as possible, at the dead-letter desk.
Or you might be a 70’s redneck, if you put some dog poo in an envelope, and mailed it to Ho Chi Minh (unaware he was dead). You might be a 70’s postal redneck, if another postal employee found the letter to North Vietnam, and while your back was turned, hid it in one of the numerous slots, in your mailing case. You might be a 70’s postal redneck, if you smelled it, but it took you forever to find the dang letter in your case. You might be a 70’s postal redneck, if you dutifully plastic-wrapped the “letter”, stamped it as “Unmailable Matter” and with “Return to Sender”.
Terry Crow GP
Vicki-Your postal redneck jokes are better than anything I come up with and have the added value of being real. I don’t think that I will ever look at my mail in the same way again. Isn’t it about time for some relatives of rednecks jokes?
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Nor did I look at mail the same way, after over 12 yrs. in the P.O., Terry, thanks. I really felt like I understood what “going Postal” meant, it was no surprise, when it hit the news. I will come up with more p.r. jokes, in time. And I will give the next redneck relatives some thought.

Judy, Amazing, what a clever boy and people talk about “dumb animals”. They’ve been hanging out with the wring animals!!! No clicks or “walk on” to get him to move when the tack is taken off – he just goes, straight to the feed bin.

Thanks for sharing. Every barn needs a Lava Man.

Brenda and Judy. What is truly amazing is that Lava Man is just so cool. He carefully chews his food and no one can distract him from his mission. I love this.

That is great! He just opens the garbage can, sticks his head down the chute, and chows down, ignoring his “fans”, until poked at, repeatedly, to get his attention.

TVG: CHRB (Calif. Horse Racing Board) has banned the performance enchancing drug Clenbuterol (Bute) in all race horses for one year. Effective July 2012. They will have a VET on later to discuss this ruling.
Terry Crow GP
Regardless of how one feels about the medication issue, the CHRB making this type of ruling is a joke. All of the horses who need this type of medication, which is generally conceded to be comparable to aspirin, will just mean that those horses will race elsewhere. A performance enhancing drug? There are lots of difference of opinion on that. The vet who advises them is also bad news. Why not just have a general vet exam of any horse scheduled to run the next day with stringent testing for meds. If anything was going to be banned, I thought it would be lasix.

Here is the article on CHRB ruling on Bute.

Eveline / Maryland.
Just a clarification. Clenbutarol, brand name-Ventipulmin, is a bronchodialator. It aids in breathing by dilating the small bronchia and helps the horse to get rid of mucus, mostly caused by allergic reactions to being stabled in a confined area. It’s already banned in New Mexico. In human athletes & horses the abuse lays in the quantities used above therapeutic use, it becomes a muscle builder. Bute or butazolidine is a pain killer, an anti-inflammatory . It is allowed to race on in certain quantities. I’m not a vet and sorry for spelling mistakes, but I hope this is helpful.

Thank you, Eveline. You are correct. I should have waited to read the article before I commented. However, I would not take the word of Rick Arthur for anything. I wonder if this ruling will at all affect the horses who are considering coming to the BC?
