Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

Sheena. I just looked up the race. Moosie must have some remaining issues. His trainer has not yet figured out what makes Moosie run. What a strange and interesting horse. Ascot could still be on. Hope so. Stay safe.

ALL ABOUT VERTIGINEUX FROM WINTER QUARTER FARM:
“Broken that fall at the farm, VERTIGINEUX continued training in Camden, SC under Mickey Preger. Preger took his time with the big-shouldered filly and observed that her ankles would require extra care. VERTIGINEUX moved on to make three unsuccessful starts at three before moving to the care of Michael Dickinson. Dickinson discovered a filly with tons of talent, but quite unsound. She quickly won two starts at four and retired to Winter Quarter after failing to earn black-type.
Barren her first year, VERTIGINEUX produced an imposing first foal by neighboring Shadwell Farm’s first year sire ALJABR. This filly was so large as a yearling that buyers saw her as time consuming and risky, she fetched a rock bottom $4,000 at the Keeneland September sale. Named WHERE’S BAILEY, she immediately caused her breeder to take notice when she won a stake on the grass in June of her two year old year.”
The next mating, a conscious downsizing for the big mare, resulted in the lovely, appropriately named BALANCE. Purchased at the Winter Quarter Keeneland September consignment for John and Jerry Ammerman, this filly fetched the top price of 2004 for a THUNDER GULCH yearling ($260,000). She went on to become a multiple grade 1 winner. Kronfeld chose STREET CRY(IRE), Darley’s sensational runner, for VERTIGINEUX’s next mating. The cross carried a different mix of MR. PROSPECTOR than BALANCE, through MACHIAVELLIAN. This would become one of the most successful matings of all time.”
DeniseC
Vertingineax was a very talented, but unsound mare. Seems like “E” is “delicate”
like her mom. Horses get dehydrated like people do when they fly; and even
more so because they have such a huge bloodvolume and water content;
and she flew for quite a long time from CA to NY. JS will treat her delicately and she
will hopefully be a stakes winner and an awesome boodmare.
Street Cry’s genes as a first year stallion, he was very very very sound, with
good bone and talent; gave Zenny her soundness and overroad the unsoundness
of Vertingineax.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Fascinating–thanks for the info. It has always amazed me that any horse could fly as far as Dubai and win that race! I would be nervous flying one halfway across the country. We remember how many people made fun of Zenny for being a “polytrack horse”. Well, she showed them all in her last (and I think most courageous) race.

As described by Darley. However, looks are deceiving and are sometimes on the

Sheena. Magician resembles Coz. Also nice ears like Coz. That was a decisive win. Isn’t the Epsom Derby coming up soon? I guess that Dawn Approach is the favorite. Joe O’Brien is quoted in the English papers as wondering if DA will get the distance. 1 and a half miles was too long for Frankel. Are there any Dynaformers in that race?

Blame Marshall for this one, I post it at her request. A guy was at the track, and before he made his first bet, he went out to the walking ring to observe the horses. He noticed that there was a priest there at the rail who was gesturing with his hands as a horse went by. “I wonder what that’s all about,” thought the man. As it turned out, the horse won the race. The man was astounded at this development, and again went outside to observe. As before, the priest gestured with his hands as a particular horse went by and the horse won. After this went on for a few races, the man figured at last I have some inside information and decided to bet on the next horse that the priest gestured at. With this in mind, the man went back to the walking ring and waited. When he noticed the priest gesturing with his hands at the number five horse he bet everything he had on that horse. The horse was leading by five lengths in the middle of the stretch when the animal dropped dead of a heart attack. Devastated, the man sought the priest out. When he explained why he had lost his life’s savings, the priest said “You are not a Catholic .are you?” The man admitted that he was not. “If you were,” said the priest, “you would know the difference between a blessing and the last rites.” Marshall–You should be ashamed of yourself for causing me to subject the dumplings to this joke once again.

Yes, he’s right. I liked the horse in the background. He stole the limelight. Great video.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks for that, AJ. I don’t normally ‘assume’ that people are cheating, I think because I have a hard time imagining how they could not care about the horses, manage to not feel that abusing them “is not right”, and how they can live with themselves, in the process. Maybe my naivete. That serious defect in the character and humanity of some people, seems largely unfixable, sadly. Discard your integrity, at the peril of the real quality of your own life, in your heart.

NEWS from Sidna in OK ,who is doing what she can to spread info. on ways to help horses injured in the tornado. You may have read my post a couple of days ago, here is an update, Sidna is currently on her way to Dr. Wiley in Norman (he took in most of the Moore area horses) with a load of shavings for their bedding from Red Earth Tack & Feed, who are doing a great job organizing volunteer help with fencing, donations for feed, etc. SIdna took this video from her car near Moore! https://www.facebook.com/photo.phpv=10201356930553193&set=vb.1471535516&type=2&theater
If you can donate even a few dollars, please do, every little helps. People can’t even go get their injured horses, they lost their transport as well as their homes in the tornado, and it took all the fencing with it too so they wouldn’t even have any where to put an injured horse. Here are 2 options if you would like to make a donation by check: Equi-Center Veterinary Hospital, Tornado Injured Horses, Michael J Wiley 6600 W Rock Creek Road, Norman, OK 73072-2019 Or, OTRP with a memo noting OK Tornado Horse Relief and send to Oklahoma Thoroughbred Retirement Program, PO Box 96, Blanchard, OK 73010.
If you know anyone in need/can voluteer/lost animals in OK check Red Earth Tack & Feed on fb and there are lots of other fb pages posting help available & photo’s of found pets. If nothing else, please share photo’s of found pets via email & fb, even if you don’t know any one there, someone you know might know someone, it’s such a simple thing to do and could result in a pet and family being reunited after this tragedy.
Here is a donkey whose injuryies were taken care of by Dr. Wiley’s hospital https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151534830548472&set=a.404006823471.182388.238542048471&type=1&theater

Sheena. Moose tweeted that it was hot at York today and Willy did not discuss the race in advance with him. He’s gone to sleep, but will let his fans know what the future racing plans are as soon as he’s decided. He runs when he wants, according to him.
Looking forward to the final line up for the Derby. Will check for Big Ds later this week. I think that Ballydoyle has a good prospect in Battle of Marengo. Marengo was the name of Napoleon’s horse.
Had not heard this news about the French soldier. Very disturbing indeed. Take care.

DebraZ,
Thanks for finding the video. The horse that came in second, Ruthian, is the dam of my favorite grass mare Rutherienne whom I followed from her first win at Belmont to her last race at Hollywood Park. Her full sister Ruthenia, (sired by Pulpit) is running tomorrow in the Miss Liberty Stakes at Monmouth. I can see the family resemblance. It’s the first time I have ever saw their dams run. Great Find!!

Trina; I will try to give Sir a hug; I came close today. For a greenhorn I am getting better! I sometimes think that it is better to just look into their eyes and talk to them, rather than have a fear of them. They will feel that. When Sir has bitten twice and a number of volunteers make a statement about Sir pinning his ears back when they come any where near him I keep hanging in there!
Hugz in Dumpingland,
Sally B
Hi all! Our extra pasture is complete for Sir. I got one of my strong sons and 2 other volunteers their husbands and they pounded in the T posts. We all did the rest. In the meantime, with Liz the very experienced horse person, we thought while we are working let Sir out in the upper pasture with the others because he will be so happy to graze on this luscious long grass. All went well! I remember months earlier, before Sir turned onto Frito agressively, that Sir was the one that exercized everyone.
We all are stringing wire etc., when we look up and all of them are doing their run all across the upper pasture. (We worried about those big critter holes) They all ran at a pace they could do, but it was so beautiful to see!!! Where is my camera; in my car. OH POOP. They all ran into the lower pasture to the stalls as we just all stood back against the new fence line. We have 32 year old Fancy, an Arabian, 30 year old Frito, 26 year old Jo (the litl stinker) and 23-24 year old Sir. AMAZING! ( Of course we worried but there was not much we could do about things at the moment) They have been blessed. It was incredible day. I wish my BFF could be down here to join in once in a while. I know she would love them.
hugz, Sally B.
Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
P.S. When the last of us were leaving they were standing in their stalls looking out, Frito and Fancy’s eyes more than half mast, resting. They were tired!!!! Sir is now back separated so they can truly rest at peace. It is just like me wanting to play soccer ball or kickball with my 11, 9 and 8 year olds. You do it because you do not want to miss the fun! ( I have ached so much afterwards!) I hope Fancy & Frito will be just fine after their rest.
Bless Zenyatta and her sons, Bless all of you and bless these old horses.

General Election Takes Arlington Classic
By Frank Angst, The Blood-Horse Updated: Saturday, May 25, 2013 8:27 PM
General Election survived a “recount” of sorts to post his first graded stakes win May 25 in the $150,000 Arlington Classic Stakes (gr. IIIT) on the turf at Arlington Park
After settling for second in the Lexington Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland last time, 13-1 shot General Election would not be denied his first graded stakes. The Harlan’s Holiday colt held off a late charge from 9-5 favorite Admiral Kitten to win the Arlington Classic for 3-year-olds by one length.
In his initial start on turf, WinStar Farm’s General Election also withstood a stewards’ review after objections were lodged against him and third-place finisher Dorsett by fourth-place finisher Gefest for impeding his stretch run. The objections by Gefest’s trainer Gennadi Dorochenko and jockey Rosemary Homeister Jr. were disallowed against the winner and jockey Joe Rocco Jr.
