Happy Preakness Day!
Zenyatta and her colt got to see Ann and Jerry this week! Alys took photos of their visit, and Mike Cline and Charles Campbell stopped by.
Also, at the end of this post, see a conversation with Ann and Charles about the night of the foaling. They discuss Zenyatta’s inclination towards motherhood and the special bond she shares with her foals.
Enjoy!

Jesus told us not to fear, not to be troubled, not to be anxious, and not to worry.
That is reason enough why these enemies of faith should not linger in our minds, feed our emotions, cloud our souls, or find a place in our hearts.

Belmont Park: Fever kept Eblouissante out of Ogden Phipps
By David Grening Daily Racing Form 05/23/2013 5:11PM
When John Shirreffs shipped Eblouissante from Southern California to New York last month, he was hoping to have Zenyatta’s younger half-sister ready for Monday’s Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Handicap.
But Eblouissante developed a temperature shortly after her arrival, Shirreffs said Thursday, which is why she didn’t make it back to the work tab until Wednesday.
“She got real dehydrated when she first got here,” Shirreffs said. “She got a temperature about two days after she got here.”
Shirreffs said Eblouissante missed about five days of training. After missing the Phipps, Shirreffs said he doesn’t have “any specific plans” for the filly, though the Shuvee Handicap at Saratoga on July 20 could be a target.
Meanwhile, Shirreffs will start his first horse at the meet Sunday with the 3-year-old maiden filly Poster Girl in a 1 1/16-mile turf race.

Pati-15 days to graduation!
Ebby seems to be the sickly member of the family. She might take after her mom and be a bit danger prone too. While Z never had any issues and was your proverbial tank, it seems that Ebby is the one child that’s very talented, but because she’s sick/injured so often, she can never truly show-off her potential like Z could. Once she feels better and she gets to being herself again, I think she’ll run a fine race. Maybe she’ll be in Saratoga when I get to moving in to my college.

OH! Poor baby….

Dear Ingrid, Pati and Sandy:
Ebby’s Daddy, Bernardini, had some issues early as a three year old; a temp from a lung infection was treated and cleared up, but he missed the 2006 Kentucky Derby. He went on to win the Preakness, The Jim Dandy, The Travers, The Jockey Club Gold Cup and was 2nd to Invasor in the BC Classic. Maybe Ebby has some of the same sensitivity and will grow out of it like he did. Maybe the transition to New York played a part too. I think with JS at the helm she will be fine and will race again when she’s at her best. Hugs, JB

Dear Trina, Thank YOUI for that thank you card. Your personal thankyou for all that remembered you puts me in awe as it had to be a task not to forget anyone. You are quite a Zster. Sally Blank (cherish Z for my lifetime)
Hello all & my Zenyatta;
What a week it has been. Did you ever have to have a mole removed, cut off by a dermatoligist? This one was on my waist and it had grown large and was rubbing by anything I wore. I forgot with the removal, I could not have anything rub etc. It has been 7 days of this. I have been wearing anything I can find in my woredrobe and I have come up with some I can drag down much lower than my waist. The problem is I have to appear in public and my crotch hangs down several inches! I don’t dare bend over! I don’t need to be in with the “younger crowd”.
With that being said, I still went out and did horse duties. Because of our situation with Sir, who has been separated from the others, we have to create more for pasture for him within one of the pastures. Another problem is of big woodchuck holes in the upper pasture which in the dark could cause life serious injury to our old horses. So right now, any a.m. people go and open the gate to the upper for the day. P.M. people are to close the gate when the horses have come in to feed on their grain. I am covering for someone on Weds. eve. All is well. I close a couple of stalls to those that like to try to get in to someone else grain. FINE; all are chowing down and I still need to fill haynets and clean. Not every horse is fed the same amount. So I open the two stall doors because they were wanting, forgetting I should have gone out to close that upper gate!! IT HAD BEEN POURING ALL DAY. Off they went and before I remembered they were out in this luscious pasture. Fancy is still back by her stall and relaxed after eating. . I quit my hay stuffing and walked out to see if I could get them back into the lower pasture.
Hey, I am still a greenhorn so I brought some pieces of carrot. I got Jo out but Frito, special Frito ignored me. So I shut the gate with Jo now in the lower; she went to graze in the lower & Fancy came out and joined her. I continued my hay feeding and clean up and decided I really needed to get them in cause I needed to get back home myself and eat!
I grabbed Fritos halter & lead (although he is fairly stubborn about this) and went out there to open the upper gate and get Frito. Who should now see me and come over as they want to get into this upper pasture but Jo and Fancy! I said “Back” but I knew this was not a simple thing. I had read our log and knew Fancy had been groomed in the afternoon, so I approached her with the halter. I said “hey, Fancy pants, I’m going to halter you”. Her ears went semi back and she headed for the stalls and then Jo followed. So I followed and locked them in the paddock area. I went back out for Frito and he actually was heading for the upper gate. (He probably was wondering with the other two going in what was he missing!) They were all comfortable in the paddock and the rain came down pouring! I padded myself on the back!! haha, hah
How about this, am I a pro now! hah hah
We got the approval to Tpost another pasture within the larger pastue for Sir, who I happen to love, so I was asked to get all the materials for this project and will be reimbursed. I dropped them off Thurs. Looking down from the upper barn I could see the horses out there. Sir, of course being alone, heard a machine off in the distance. I decided to get my camera. You know how that alert look is? I captured that. But, I had called out to Sir from where I was, and Jo and Fancy wondered out from the upper pasture. Now I just watched. Little stinker Jo, who I think still is in heat and otherwise has caused Sir problems in the past, (chasing him away from the feeders etc.) walked up to the fence where Sir was standing and they cheeked each other, she made a cute little squeel . After that Sir ( a gelding, but something was hanging) turned the opposite way to graze.
Jo turned her little butt toward the fence and stood there for a bit. Shame on you; my mother would never have allowed this!! hah hah
Tomorrow we put up the fencing. Yippe for Sir; and thank you for reading part of my week. I other, I won’t go there! hah hah

RIP Randino. Young 2 year-old was victim of a freak accident today in Race 1 at Hollywood Park. Fortunately, I did not see it happen, but he apparently swerved from the right-hand whip into the rail. He suffered a catastrophic injury and died. Garrett Gomez was the jockey and apparently not seriously injured. This is so sad. Condolences to all Randino connections.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
So very sad. RIP Randino. Condolences to all the connections.
Dona
can’t imagine anyone loving their horse like Ann does. incredible.
good luck Rosie, am so happy Baffert has put you on his horses. !
if racing wants more exposure and bring in more fans, Rosie can do it. Baffert gets it!
look what 60 minutes did with Rosie. most watched Derby in years.
Joel, Johnnie and Mikey are great riders, people love them but none of them will fill
the stands. that’s the truth. Rosie does and would even more, if she continues to get more top horses. imagine the press for racing if she wins the Belmont. don’t know if Code West is up to it but boy, it would be something.
Dona
I was watching HRTV when Randino went down. it was stunning.
he was in the lead when it happened. I cried and cried. poor baby.
it was evident from the moment it happened that it wasn’t good but i kept waiting
to hear some expression of remorse for the horse and sorrow to the owners.
it never happened. yes, they were concerned for Garret and rightly so
but the horse lost his young life and i’m sure his connections were in total shock.
both HRTV and TVG need some serious training on how to conduct themselves
in this type of situation. it’s disgusting.
Louise Castello
Dona, I agree completely. This was a 2 year old who was winning and was whipped and turned into the rail. This just makes me furious and so sad!
DeniseC
Horses breakdown because of soundness issues; not the way
they are ridden. It is genetic and in their breeding. Garrett
Gomez is in no way known for any type of ridding style
that is harmful for his mounts.
The sad thing is the breeders who bred the horse not
the jockey and racing.
Louise Castello
I understand what you are saying. I’m furious at whoever races these two year olds and if they are fragile, then I’m furious at the breeders. After this latest Breeder’s Cup debacle, I’m just furious at the whole sport right now. I am pointing fingers in a lot of different directions. Sorry! I love our girl, Zenyatta and am thankful for all of her connections.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
The horse veered into the rail after being hit three times on the right side. It was not a soundness issue.
Louise Castello
Trina, thank you! In this case, I agree it’s not a soundness issue although there are plenty of soundness issues going on elsewhere. Sometimes these deaths are just overwhelming!
