Florida Derby Winner Materiality Dies
By Jeremy Balan, The Blood Horse, October 1, 2016
Grade I winner Materiality has died, according to the bloodstock agent who purchased the Afleet Alex colt and breeder John Gunther.
Agent Steve Young, who purchased Materiality for $400,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale, said the colt was euthanized July 26 “at Dr. Scott Morrison’s farm in Lexington” after a long battle with laminitis. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/215479/florida-derby-winner-materiality-dies?source=rss
BGG Note: Yes, there are date differences in these two.
Another sad loss to laminitis
I remember reading that he had been injured and it sounds like laminitis possibly developed as a result. So very sad; only four years old. Run free in God’s Heaven beautiful boy. Love and Hugs, JB
Thanks for posting this. It clears up some questions I had when I first saw the news that Materiality had died. That awful, evil disease, laminitis, strikes again. It shows no respect for age or pedigree. So very sad.
Dear Max.The racing gods are alive and well .They were discussing the disagreement on our racing channel today. The presenters thought there was more to it than finances.I heard Davy Russell got into trouble for hitting another horse with his whip. The first strike was accidental but Davy continued to hit him I think it was at Clonmel. He has taken a few days off to calm down and apologised profusely.Sheena
Mullins is a mild mannered trainer and a gentleman. If Mullins says that the dispute was down to cash, I would believe him. Ricci and McManus don’t seem to be worried about a fee increase. Ricci says that he’s definitely sticking with Mullins, although it would be easier for him to have a Brit trainer. Ballycasey is his horse.
As to Russell going momentarily off the rails, Hastings used to bite other horses at the track, even during races.
Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Moss with Gormley! Victor Espinoza riding in the Front Runner Stakes – Secret House came out of the gate without his rider; scary!
Anyway a nice winner, with those lovely Zenyatta silks:)
Frankel’s filly Toulifaut sold tonight for a record €1.9 million. She was bought by Katsumi Yoshida.I hope she will stay in Europe Spain burg who beat Fair Eva is coming out to the US.
Dear Z friends:
Race 6 at Santa Anita, Gormley he won wire to wire, Victor his Jockey,
his trainer JS, and the Moss’ his owners….Great race….Great horse!!
Congratulations to team Z !!!!
Hugs Ingrid.
Oh, what a finish by Stellar Wind. I love Beholder and I believe she has nothing to prove. She’s got so much heart. Congrats Stellar Wind and VE. I think that was his third win of the day. Love and Hugs, JB
I totally agree! Beholder and GS ran a great race; it just wasn’t to be today. Congratulations to Stellar Wind (another member of the Chestnut club), VE and all connections!
Dear Judy.I feel sad for Beholder she ran her heart out.I heard the ground was against Flintshire very heavy rains.I have just been watching the 2012 Arc when Solémia beat Orfevre.Oh,I wish all horses were as nonchalant as Nobby. The look on his face says it all!Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT Cap Frank Hercules Bentley and all the sweeties.SheenaX
I’m thinking maybe Beholder needs some down time to just be a horse. She sure deserves it. Love that girl. Nobby is something else. Hopefully a surface better suited to Flint next time. Love and Hugs, JB
Laminitis strikes again. DARN! Condolences to all his connections. Speaking of which I saw that Macy’s Attitude, daughter of Lentenor, Barbaro’s younger brother was scratched from her race by the veterinarian. Hope its nothing serious. Has anyone heard anything concering Coz or Ziconic? Here’s hoping they’re O.K. May everyone sleep beautifully tonight.
I just finished watching a new show on Animal Planet, “Life at Vet U”. It is interesting, and one of the students was working with Dr. Richardson at the New Bolton Center. The veterinary school is in Pennsylvania. The show airs at 10:00 PM, Saturday.
You stirred up your own emotions when you did not want to. You kept the faith when it seemed not to matter. You got up when you wanted to lie down. You were weak but you claimed strength. You were resentful, but you reached outside that resentment and took hold of something that erased all resentment. You overcame the melancholy mood not because you thought you could, but because you alone could not. You refused to listen to the persistent voices of wrong and took a strong grip on that which lifts and secures. You made it when everything seemed to defy the possibility. Some part of every victory stays you at every point where you will never again sink below it. You hung on for dear life, and there is no turning back now. The Spirit has been with you and will continue to be with you. Remember and give thanks.

Dear Kathy.A beautiful autumnal day here. They are not televising the Arc on C4 and I don’t subscribe to Sky.I don’t watch a lot of TV so it would be a waste of money.Waiting the result on FB.They are busy at the Dyfi the frame for Ceri’s hide arrived and it was really heavy. The water buffalo are off to Mr Puw the farmer for the winter and they have been adding more to the online shop.I posted the goodbye photos of Will and family on my timeline.Very sweet.Mother Theresa’s big week she was very casual yesterday in jeans. We all hope she gets some new kitten heels for the conference.I had no idea the hero dog Hooch had his tongue cut out bless him. What’s a bit of slobber between friends?Have a blessed Sabbath.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Angel Holly,Nikko and Sugar.SheenaXOXO
A thrilling finish to the Prix de L’Opera with Speedy Boarding winning her 2nd group 1 in France. So Mi Dar rallied to finish 3rd.James Fanshawe trained the winner.Congratulations to all connections. Lovely day at Chantilly.
A 1-2-3 for the master of Ballydoyle in the Arc.Huge congratulations to Aidan and team.Highland Reel and Order of St George 2nd and 3rd respectively. He must be talking 19 to the dozen now!!!
Big congratulations to Found on the Arc victory, well done!! Congrats to Aidan O’Brien on having the finishing 1-2-3, too — amazing! Also, huge congrats to Galileo for these three fabulous offspring!
RIP Bel Sas, only 5 years old. So sorry that this terrible accident happened to you, beautiful boy. May you run happily now among the angels.
Yes,Sarah who runs the ‘Fly’ page is fuming. She said it would never have happened if he had stayed with Willie.Who knows??I hadn’t realised when I posted Galileo had sired all three. He is truly a superstud!Sorry for the typo in the name.RIP Bei Sas.
Max
Just horrible news. No good may come from Giggi moving those horses. Horses are creatures of habit, and change of any kind can cause issues. This was major, moving them from their homes and friends. Willie’s people must be very upset. Same for the young 0’Brien.
Max
Just read that poor Bel Sas fell over a hurdle. Very sad. Mullins won that race with Penhill and Shorty. They also won the Istabraq Hurdle with Ivan Grozny at Tipperary. Apparently, it was a walk in the park for Ivan and the short one.
Ann NC
RIP Brave Champ.
Agree, Max. Racing so soon after a move and then not receiving the usual send off from Willie… it is very sad. Horses are very sensitive to changes, esp when it comes to their daily care and from their familiar peeps.
Got caught up and watched the races last night.
Congratulations to Chromie, he is amazing! A shout out to Dortmund for a valliant race and so much heart.
Talking about heart, Congrats to Stellar Wind and to beautiful Beholder who gave it her all. So close with Stellar Wind winning by a neck, they are both winners to me.
Happy for the Mosses and John Shireffs, congratulations to Gormley.
In Euro racing , wow, Aidan O’Brien with a 1-2-3 in the Arc!!Congratulations to Found, and to Highland Reel and Order of St. George for an exciting 2nd and 3rd place finish.
RIP Bel Sas, very sad news. Too many to count, no words.
I agree horses are creatures of habit and form attatchments to their routine, environment and the people and horses they see daily. Giggi did not put the best interest of the horses first moving so many from Mullins and so suddenly. Traumatic for the horses the way it was handled.
Beautiful course and what an exciting race!
Thanks Sheena and BGG, enjoyed it twice. Congratulations to Ryan Moore and Found.
A great day for Aidan and the Irish with his horses finishing 1-2-3!!
Dear Max.I heard about Mullin’s other winners.I look forward to them returning to our shores for the coming jumps season.Trainers are tough and can cope Joe hardly knew the horse.Michael O’Leary has put his financial interests first instead of the welfare of his horses.
Ryan was in a good position all through the race.Did you see Frankie giving him a kiss??Ryan is a very reserved kind of guy.I am not sure what he thought.Limato was a superb winner of the Prix Foret might be coming out for the Breeders Cup.Sheena
That was a very nice win for Found and Moore in the Arc. Saw the kiss and it was bizarre. Frankie tried to land one on Wicklow Brave a few weeks ago after the St. Leger. Wicklow Brave was having none of that, kind of like how The Fly would react. Frankie ended up kissing Mullins instead on the ear. Frankie is clearly not a Brit.
Mullins is very soft hearted for his horses. He never takes a holiday. Each horse is treated like a family member. Same thing for his dogs, who train with him and even bark out their opinions. I think that seeing Bel Sas go down like that today after leaving less than a week before would be devastating.
