Happy Monday!
We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! These photos from Alys show how Zenyatta enjoyed her holiday.
Now that the festivities are over, we have some updates in the works including additions to the shop (sneak peek: we’re launching a new line of greeting cards) and news about Cozmic One and Ziconic. Make sure you’re on our mailing list for early access and December promotions.
Enjoy!

I’m so sad about Shared Belief! I saw him win at Santa Anita on opening day (Dec. 26) last year and ran into Jim Rome and his wife a bit later as they headed to the barn to visit him and I congratulated them… they were so happy. Darn it. Go run and play with Barbaro and all the rest of the darlin’ ones over there, Shared Belief – you’ll be in good company!

Shared Memories
Steve Haskin Hangin with Haskin The Blood-Horse Dec. 4 20`5
No one could imagine that a year as magical, historical, and downright glorious as 2015 could end in such tragedy. The death of Shared Belief shocked the racing world and reminded everyone just how gut wrenching this sport can be and how fragile these magnificent horses are. –

December 5 Cherokee Devotional
The Cherokee calls this month U Ski’Ya-the Snow Month. A dusting of snow softens the rustling leaves and defines the edges of rocks and trees that are hidden in heavy foliage in other seasons. This is the quiet time, the sharp edge of winter adjusting the land unto itself.
The woods would be gray if it were not for the blue mist that hangs like soft gauze drapery through every glen and cleft in the hills. Evergreens thrive in soft leaf-matted ravines, and cottonwoods stand stark against the dark woods.
When the winds lay down in late evening the horizon clears to show vivid colors and every window is gilded gold until the sun disappears and the blue hour comes. It is as quiet as when the earth was created-and then an owl calls.
I stand here upon this great plain with the broad sunlight pouring down upon it. We shall be brothers and friends for all our lives.

Dear Kathy. No snow here but Storm Desmond has arrived. No rain but high winds. The North has a red weather waning flooding and gales. The forth bridge is closed having repairs and causing many queues! Some good racing here today the National fences back in action ground very soft at Aintree though. Many Clouds is running at the moment against Mullins’ Don Poli.I posted a gorgeous pic of Kauto on my timeline take a look.Don Poli won! Many Clouds ran a great race though. We saw Nigel(Moosie’s dad)at Aintree lost a lot of weight looks better for it though.
No more news about Wookie or Fubu.Milo was giving the forecast for Boston and explaining about High Pressure very clever.Zoe and Diane are having a busy morning and Mango plus Mattie got a lot of mail.Mattie’s a cutie. The shootings in San Bernardino were terrorist related after all. It’s such a dangerous world where you have no idea who your enemy is.There’s talk that the Paris bombings are Birmingham related too.Hope you enjoy your weekend.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.Now for the Tingle Creek and maybe a return to form for Sire!
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Stay safe in the stormy weather! Fortunately you have wonderful racing to keep you entertained! Best wishes to all the horses and jockeys running this weekend, I’m anxious for more news on Wookie and Fubu, too. Haven’t visited the ratties yet. I hope Zoe and Diane have fun at their event. Mango and Mattie are always getting gifts. Love the little dress that says “Princess.” The San Bernardino attacks are the worst terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11. So dangerous and scary. God help us! Have a nice weekend. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy XOXO

In contrast to the grief of Shared Belief, rejoice for Smarty Jones. He just arrived at Calumet and looks wonderful. They said there were no plans to shuttle him and seem very very happy to have him at the farm.

Birdstone broke a lot of hearts that day. It made me feel a little better by the next day that his sire, Grindstone, was a fav of mine. Not much better, but a little.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Sheena,
Me, too! I was so hoping that Smarty could hold on to win the Belmont — he surely deserved it. Great little horse; he never stopped trying. That was a very sad day for me. Great win for Birdstone, but he definitely was the spoiler.
Glad Smarty Jones is happy and healthy. Enjoy your life at Calumet Farm!
Hugs and Love

Read that he’s next to English Channel and the two are getting along well. Calumet is a great farm again, and Kentucky is where the mares are. Glad as well that he’s not shuttling.

Today’s devo:
And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6–7)
Now you would think that if God so rules the world as to use an empire-wide census to bring Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, he surely could have seen to it that a room was available in the inn.
Yes, he could have. And Jesus could have been born into a wealthy family. He could have turned stone into bread in the wilderness. He could have called 10,000 angels to his aid in Gethsemane. He could have come down from the cross and saved himself. The question is not what God could do, but what he willed to do.
God’s will was that though Christ was rich, yet for your sake he became poor. The “No Vacancy” signs over all the motels in Bethlehem were for your sake. “For your sake he became poor” (2 Corinthians 8:9).
God rules all things — even motel capacities — for the sake of his children. The Calvary road begins with a “No Vacancy” sign in Bethlehem and ends with the spitting and scoffing of the cross in Jerusalem.
And we must not forget that he said, “He who would come after me must deny himself and take up his cross.”
We join him on the Calvary road and hear him say, “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you” (John 15:20).
To the one who calls out enthusiastically, “I will follow you wherever you go!” Jesus responds, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Yes, God could have seen to it that Jesus have a room at his birth. But that would have been a detour off the Calvary road.

Dear Max.Enjoyed the race with Don Poli a great run from Many Clouds too.Ground very soft at Aintree.Did get to see the slimline version of Nigel today It suits him.A joyous occasion at Sandown everyone forgot about the non-runners as old favourite Sire De Grugy won his 2nd Tingle Creek. He had to survive a 10min stewards inquiry for last fence interference with Special Tiara. A gritty performance from Sire and so great to see him back in the winner’s enclosure.A fantastic 2 days for Gary Moore His horses are on fire.Beautiful photo of Kauto from Michael Harries today.Steve Preston has just said that Sire will stay with his best friend Jamie and family when he retires. So generous.Hugs Sheena
Max
Saw that win by Sire. He’s just a wonderful horse, and I’m happy for the Moores.
Glanced at Moosie’s site. He’s looking better than ever. The ladies are looking after the Moose and he’s in very fine form.
Agree with you about Many Clouds. He was relentless, but Don Poli and Copper just could not be beaten today. DP was determined to get the win. Mullins wasn’t sure before that he could do it. The Irish raiders however seem to love the heavy ground.

You can’t see him too well because it’s so dark in the early morning but when he flashes into the light he just shines and looks to be getting trimmer I think.
His time improves toward the end of the working, he did 5/8 in 1:01. I think Sherman said the last furlong was 11 flat.

Dear Max.Memories of Sir Henry and Lady Cecil when First Mohican won at Wolverhampton today. Now trained by Alan King it was good to see Tom Queally still riding.Hugs Sheena
Max
This is good news. FM has not done so well since Cecil passed nor has Queally. Mohican is a very nice chestnut. He’s 7 if I recall correctly? Isn’t the Wolverhampton course all weather?
As to your above comments about the UK weather, are you okay in Wales?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Fortunately in the south west where I live we have escaped the heavy rain but had the gales overnight.North Wales has had some flooding.Cumbria had flooding back in 2009 and 2005 but it’s unprecedented this weekend. So far it’s remaining extremely mild I am quite happy about that!I know you get very cold winters.
Yes Wolverhampton is all weather now.It was the feature handicap First Mohican won today.Alan King usually does well there. He trained Smad Place to win the Hennessy.Punchestown is inspecting tomorrow at 8am.Hugs Sheena
Max
Glad that you are safe. Saw some photos of the floods. That is very bad.
Today I went out for a walk. A surprise was on the next street. Two Belgian shire horses with their two wagons of people out on a Christmas ride came along. They were really big fellows and quite proud looking, although these big horses are usually gentle guys. I stood and watched while they passed. If only I had had apples to offer to them. It was quite wonderful.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I wouldn’t likely see Belgian Shires while walking in my town.A great treat for you.Amberleigh House was parading at Aintree today. He’s enjoying retirement at the National stud in Newmarket. Now aged 23yrs he looks in perfect condition and greets many visitors to the stud.Hugs Sheena

My child, know that you do not follow in the ways of those who experiment in danger. The Great Spirit has given you a mind of your own and it is a good mind, a straight mind, with strengths and vision sacred to you.
When your equals jeer and rag and call you a coward, reach down deep in your own mind and know you have gifts and power they will never know about. Never try to explain yourself, but be an example of what you have been taught. Remember if anyone, including an elder, has led you to believe a lie, that you have another Teacher that cannot lie. Hear that voice and listen well. It is grace to you and it will not let you fail.
When you say, Fight!” we shall fight. When you say, “Make peace,” we will make peace.

Dear Max.First grade 1 win for Djakadam in the John Durkan memorial chase. He galloped his rivals into submission under shorty!Al Ferol who’s now with Dan Skelton has won at Huntingdon his old boss’s horse Ptit Zig took a crashing fall at the last fence.Dan said he learned everything from Paul and was so thrilled when he gifted him the horse along with owner John Hales of course.Connections of Special Tiara are thinking of appealing!Nobody can take that race from Sire!!!!He’s looking particularly happy this morning.Hugs Sheena.
Max
I’ve posted the Djakadam race here because it was a very interesting finish. I won’t say why so that peeps can see it for themselves. But do you recall Fort Larned? Horses are full of surprises.
I think that Sire will keep his win. He’s a horse who routinely jumps to the left so that it is not unusual that he would do that. Doesn’t look like interference.
Bravo to Al. I’ve always liked him too. Thanks for this news.

sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.No,I don’t recall Fort Larned. You will have to explain.Mullins has a great team ready for the festival yet again!Sam TD was praised how he cared for Ptit Zig nasty looking fall but all is well.
The old warrior CDA and Flintshire have arrived in Hong Kong for the Vase. Both travelled well.Enjoyed the race I had only seen a little of it.Hugs Sheena
Max
Back in 2013, Fort Larned, a BCC winner, dumped his rider at Gulfstream and ran like a rocket to finish the race about 25 lengths ahead of the pack, which contained some very good horses. His speed was incredible. It was quite a sight. Hidden Cyclone reminded me of him. He was still gamely chasing down Djakadam at the end. Glad that there were no other mishaps from that fall by his jockey.
Interesting news of CDA and Flintshire. CDA must still have the desire to win. He’s amazing.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I knew the name seemed familiar.I had just joined the blog when he won the Breeders Cup.I see quite a few loose horses “win” a race over here. They just really don’t need jockeys do they??Where is Fort Larned now?
I hope it’s not getting too much for CDA all this travelling look what happened to Red Cadeaux a few weeks ago.I except accidents can happen anywhere but I have always hated to see them suffer on the racecourse.I pray all goes well for him.Mullins had a treble today.Hugs Sheena
Max
I think that Fort is now owned by Frank Stronach and is retired to stud at Adena Springs.
Indeed these horses know how to win with or without a jockey.
I saw the results for Mullins. All good. That was a pretty incredible win today by Pont Alexandre after a 1000 day layoff. Mullins also said that he was surprised by Djakadam. He decided not to send him to England because he wasn’t working well last week. Today he was right on point. Also heard that Don Poli broke his breast girth in the race yesterday, but won anyway with the damaged tack. Wow! Those Mullins horses are awesome.
