Today’s post is dedicated to the memory of Tasty Temptation, who passed away in late 2013. Tasty was by Zenyatta’s side during her early days at Lane’s End Farm. They carried their foals together and shared a special bond. Tasty will always be remembered fondly by the Zenyatta community.
Further information about Tasty’s passing has been released by Lane’d End. Statement
Lane’s End has been very generous opening their doors to Zenyatta.com and her passionate fans. Their experts have shared with us the inner workings of the farm and granted unprecedented access to the breeding and foaling process. We ask that our fans respect the privacy of Lane’s End and the privately owned horses they care for. All information that Team Zenyatta and Lane’s End Farm wishes to release to the public will be available here or at Lanesend.com.

Many thanks for the update on TT. She helped all of us who were worried about Z’s adjustment to farm life. I loved how TT watched over our Queen. Run like the wind, Tasty! You gave your love and now you can receive more even more.

Doing wrong to someone is like throwing a rubber ball against a wall-it comes back with equal force. There is no telling where it will return to, so we have to keep a constant vigil not to be caught off guard. It is easier to wish someone well. It doesn’t mean we are weak or defenseless but that if we kick at the mud we get it on us.And there are some muddy situations we should never try to contend with or understand. Whatever happens to one of us has an effect on all of us. We can’t afford the luxury of wishing anyone anything but the best of life. The Cherokee calls this the best of all-wi ta tse tiv i.
For years I have been on other peoples’ ground and trouble has always come of it.

Greetings Team Zenyatta!!
I remember watching Tasty race at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, and other venues.
So very sad to hear of the passing of Tasty. So young to have had a heart attack.
Perhaps it was congenital in the family genes, and would not be detected, just like people.
My heartfelt condolences to Lanes End and Tasty owners.

Good afternoon my Zen family.
From steamy Montreal — my sweet Daisy lasted about 10 minutes outside — a new piece from THE VAULT on the origins of the thoroughbred “down under.” Just click on my name here and it will take you to THE VAULT automatically.
Despite the heat, I’m off to see DIANA KRALL in a free outdoor concert here at the Montreal Jazz Festival. I just LOVE her to bits!!!!
Love & hugs to all and kisses to my Big Girl, the boys and Wowza (aka Princess Z)

Dear Abigail:
Extremely hot here today too. Visited the farm earlier and both Lola Mae and I lasted for an hour. No trace of a breeze today at all. The horses were in and out of the ponds and no one was trail riding. They had barrel competition from 11:00 AM to Noon; just too hot for the horses and riders. Looking forward to the new Vault article. Have fun at the DK concert. Love and Hugs, JB

I guess this heat wave is quite large because I note on Twitter that someone in New England is saying it’s 90+ degrees there and too hot for their horses! Hugs right back at you!

Dear Abigail:
Just read your new article in the Vault on Aussie and NZ racing history. Love your commentary; so informative and interesting. Learn so much from your articles. Was tickled at the name of one of Musket’s sons, Martini-Henry because Martini is my maiden name. Too cute. The videos on Mr. Redwood and Carbine were wonderful too. Thank you so much for all the hard work you do and for sharing with us. Looking forward to the next chapter. Love and Hugs, JB

Glad to see Terry came back here yesterday! Hoping Max becomes ok and returns at some point. I don’t get here as often as I used to, but it’s still very important to me. I will be out of town on vacation for the next week, so won’t be checking in again until I get back. Lot of catching up to do by then! Have a good week, all! Free Moosie! Loose the Moose!

Dear Zenyatta, Team Z, Team Lane’s End, and All Connections of Tasty Temptation,
I mourn the passing of Tasty Temptation. Death at an early age is tragic, regardless of species. I know our Queen valued her companionship.
Lane’s End is a wonderful place for a horse or any other species!!! The farm is lovely, the people are talented and kind, and the atmosphere is peaceful. As a testament to its quality, it attracts employees not just from the U.S. but from the world. As someone who has visited, it is exactly what it seems. Our dear Tasty did not die from neglect or inattention.
I for one salute all parties who allow us of Zenyatta Nation to be a part of the lives of our Queen, her babies, and her friends, both human and haired. Thank you for allowing us a glimpse of the life of Our Dear Zenyatta.
Thank you to All,
Sincerely,
Mary in Boone

Noted is the fact that Ria Antonia was unable to win the Iowa Oaks last night at Prairie Meadows. The Iowa Oaks! Guess she didn’t belong in the Preakness after all.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
This poor little filly, Ria Antonia, closed and finished 2nd one and a quarter lengths behind the winner in this Grade III race. I think she’s due for a rest and I hope her connections do the right thing by her. I agree with you, she should not have been entered in the Preakness. Here’s the replay of the Iowa Oaks. You have to scroll down to the 7th Race. Love and Hugs,JB

Barbara Wood (Texas)
Judy–She is on my watch list. As I recall, in the Preakness, she came out like gangbusters and faded. Do you suppose it is in the training? Shorter races? I haven’t figured out yet how they decide which are Grade 1, 2, 3, etc. I know the purses are bigger in the higest-rated races, but I don’t know the criteria for deciding which is which. Hugs.
lauraj_cincinnati
Grading is decided by the Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association (TOBA). Criteria include history, purse size, level of competition, conditions, and conformance to medication rules. Here are the details:
https://www.toba.org/graded-stakes/criteria-for-consideration.aspx
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Barb W:
Laura J has posted the formal criteria for Graded Stakes races. Thank you Laura J.
Some times I think just common sense comes into play. In Ria Antonia’s case, I don’t think even her trainer thought she belonged in the Preakness. She ran well in the Iowa and she should be entered in races where she can be competitive. Hope her connections do that for her. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
Lauraj-Excellent explanation of graded stakes races. Also explains why some higher graded races are not as tough as others. @Judy-In RA’s case, the Iowa filed was decidedly softer than her other recent efforts. It will be up to the trainer to check the nominations and likely opponents in her next race.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
Yes. Hope RA’s connections choose the right races for her. Love and Hugs, JB

Ann-Very well pit. I would think that the owner is the one with the delusions. Tom Amoss is generally good at spotting his horses.

Terry, She needs some down time back at the farm. I don’t have a very good opinion of her owner. Selfish to a fault.

If we could change one thing about ourselves to see the greatest gain, it would be to stop being the victim. Too many believe they are destined to be victims of broken relationships, disease, poverty, and overbearing personalities-and they say it over and over again. How we see ourselves makes all the difference. If being brow-beaten is security, we will always be the underdog. Day after day we throw ourselves into the path of what we think we deserve. But we can change that pattern. We can stop repeating what we have heard all our lives, and begin talking to ourselves with good words. We have hidden gold within us and as soon as we learn it, we will get out of the lunacy of being the perpetual victim.
We must help one another and the Great Spirit will help us both.

Dear Sheena,
That was a beautiful pic of Boo and Buddy and the beautiful blue sky. Not only have they broken 14M, they’re almost 33,000 beyond!!! What amazing little dogs. And YES, they bring happiness to the world. Marty’s internashunal bizness is wildly successful. Who would ever believe a rat would have over 6,000 likes? I love the shots of Ray’s family life. He’s such a sweetie. I’m glad it’s nice out there today. Shame they’re having rain at Wimbledon. That will be very exciting to learn the chicks’ names. I’ll have to check on Lucy Lu Cove. A chipmunk in the house sounds like tons of fun. Would make life so much more interesting! Have a wonderful day. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar.

Terry you always make my day better. My friend Melissa used to have a wonderful collection of old radio shows on tape. She’d received it from her Dad as a gift. He lived in Los Angeles. They were wonderful. We’d listen to them on the way to see the Astros play. Miss you girl. I was speechless at the video of Coz. He is beyond words gorgeous. Worried about Game on Dude. He made his run but when challenged again he seemed to just fade away. Man O’ War. Read a great book by Margaret Ours Man O’ War: A Legend Like Lightning. Learned so much about racing during that era. What moved me the most was the visit by Johnny Loftus after he’d been retired to stud many years. JL walked into the field though he’d been warned Big Red was in one of his moods. He hollered out “Hey Big Red” and here he came. Horses remember the treatment they’ve received and act accordingly. Great Book. Wordy again. Sorry.
Terry Crow
Thank you, Vicki. I have met many fine people as a result of my involvement with old time radio. Don’t know what Margaret Ours opinion is or was, but I think Johnny Loftus was handed a raw deal because he knew where the bodies were buried, especially in the case of the trainers. In those days, horses could run on any kind of medication. The only caveat was they had to let the stewards know if there was any change.
shirleeinindy
Man O War and his groom in retirement, cannot remember his name, had a real love going on. If I remember correctly, they died pretty close to the same time. You see a lot of pictures of them together and some paintings.
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
His groom was Will Harbut. He’s the one who called Man O’War “the Mostest Hoss.” Man O’War died shortly after he did.
