The winner carries with him the quiet knowledge that though he has heard every argument, faced every opponent, felt every criticism, there is no turning back and no accepting defeat. An outraged Crow warrior spoke to those who were withholding food and goods that belonged to his people, “I am not a chief, but I am a warrior. I see that my chiefs all hang their heads down awaiting some reply from their father (the commanding officer), as they do not know what to do nor say. But I know what to do! Hold up your head when you speak to chiefs and warriors, look them in the eye! Goods were promised here and they will go no further!” And the goods went no further. Even a loss would simply be a delay to this Crow. It is a matter of how deeply we believe in what we are doing. Telling a winner that something won’t work-just won’t work!
Hold up your head when you speak to chiefs and warriors!

My sympathy for the family of Kurt Cochran who been named as one of the victims of the terrorist attack in London yesterday. From Utah he and his wife were touring Europe celebrating their silver wedding anniversary. Many tributes were paid in the House of Commons today to PC Keith Palmer who tackled the terrorist unarmed.
Such a sad, senseless, evil act. Condolences and prayers for all those who are hurting and are grieving. Just heard about the Utah couple this morning. PC Keith Palmer was very brave and saved other lives with his own. RIP to the innocents.

Peggy,
I like Gun Runner. He is honest and always seems to try his best. Godspeed to him and all of them. Hope for a win by Keen Ice, Gun Runner or Arrogate.
Evening walks have a beauty all their own as the sun moves through one phase after another, coloring and shading the fields and woods. Although the air is still wintry at times, the calendar says it is spring-good enough to stir up anticipation. The sunset changes from pale pink touched with gold to lilacs and purples and deep blues. The hills along the horizon have the deepest colors, all shades of Indian gi ga ge to match the red earth, the red skin. Above the darkening shadows, clouds like long tresses of silky hair spread out to the evening star. Everything gives way to that last bit of color, the burning embers that fire the distant hills-and then the velvet hour. Silence reigns. A coyote’s long, think wail tells the world that night has fallen.
I know every stream and every wood…like my fathers before me, I live happily.

Dear Zenyatta’s baby to be,
Since you are due to make your grand entrance in May, it would be wonderful if you would be born on May 8. That is Mr. Moss’s birthday as well as mine. It would be our best birthday present ever if you would come that day!
Even if you don’t choose to be born on May 8, I am praying for an easy birth & perfect health for you & your special mom.
Dear Z Family,
We just came in from watching the sunset. To our great surprise, Baby RR (roadrunner) met us on the east side of the house (opposite side from where the RR’s usually roost) as we were walking back to the front door, and he ran just past us and hopped up toward the top of an ocotillo (a large plant that looks a bit like it belongs in another world with very tall branches that grow straight up to the sky and look somewhat like a an upside-down teepee of sticks with green leaves and thorns). This particular ocotillo is about 15 feet tall or more, and is just outside my studio window. We suppose he’s been roosting there all along, but we were just much later tonight catching the last bit of the sunset, and it was almost dark. What a treat to have him outside my window about 10 feet away! Hope you all have a wonderful evening. Dearest Zenny, hope tonight or very, very soon your new one will arrive. SO exciting!
with love from one of your aunties ~ pacing shoes wearing thin ~ hope it’s tonight dear Sweet Momma! with love, Elizabeth
Dear Elizabeth,
I love reading your bird stories as I am a birder. I have not been to NM to bird yet, though.
I have a friend who lives in Albuquerque who I hope to visit some day. Do you live anywhere near there? I would love to meet you!
Dear Donna,
So glad you are a sister birder! We’re only 4 hour drive from ABQ, which is a ‘short’ drive here in the west. I would love to drive up and meet you, or you’re most welcome to drive down and spend the night here at our BBBC (we call our home the ‘Bird and Bunny Breakfast Club’). Please let us know if you do come.
The best time in NM and almost anywhere in the US really is early October, sometimes late September. Spring can be a bit ‘gusty’ in the west, although this spring has been almost perfect so far. We also have ‘the’ best neighbors here – all are bird, horse and critter lovers. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Dear Judy,
Love sharing our RR stories and so glad you enjoy them. I wish we could get you and everyone in Zenny’s fan family here at our home for a few days of hiking and bird, bunny, squirrel, RR, coyote and especially horse watching and treks. We are so blessed to have found this beautiful home when my husband and I retired. We moved so many times growing up and then with my husband’s career that it took us several years to ‘believe’ we were actually ‘home’ for good (well until Heaven anyway). Hope you have a wonderful day today.
with love, Elizabeth

Congratulations to Ziconic’s on his 2nd last Sunday.
I wish that John would try a jockey other than Victor, though. I believe that it was Gary S that said that Zi does not like the whip. Victor tends to use the whip a lot. (Remember Pharoah in the Derby?) If Zi is using his energy fighting Victor because he is using his whip, then he does not have his mind 100% on running.
Mike is my #1 choice & Gary is my 2nd. I know that Mike is busy riding a lot of Baffert’s horses as & might not have time for Ziconic, but maybe Gary could ride him again.
Maybe someone who is familiar with the other California jocks could suggest someone else who does not use the whip so much.
