Dear Kathy R,
Thanks for the clarification. So you are sort of saying that PM
is saying she is very ready and will win in so many words before
the race is run. Sometimes we do that here, too.
It is scary that he is saying 26-27 races for wins in a very confident way.
Would you say PM is a “bloke” ? Am trying to catch on to your wonderful sayings.

Hopefully they have put RR on adequan, it is a miracle injection for stiffness and arthritis.
It is given as an injection and in about 10 to 15 minutes the horse is able to move
smoothly and fluidly. It is about a $100 per month not too expensive for the
benefits. Also used in arthritic dogs.
There is even a human product, Haluronic acid, taken orally and it is often combined with Glucosamine and Chondroitin, CVS has a great brand.

CALIFORNIA PANEL: ‘THE ONLY TREATMENT TO DECREASE EIPH SEVERITY IS FUROSEMIDE’
by Press Release | 01.27.2013 | 1:52pm
Ask Ray
Thoroughbred Owners of California representatives joined nationally prominent owners and trainers to hear a panel of international scientists discuss Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) and other critical Thoroughbred injuries in Beverly Hills on Jan. 18. Following the day-long forum, the distinguished panel issued the following consensus statement on EIPH:
Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (E.I.P.H.) is a consequence of the high pulmonary vascular pressures achieved by elite athlete horses during strenuous exercise. A similar condition occurs in racing greyhounds and has been reported in some elite human athletes. In all of these situations, the heart is approaching its maximal functional capacity. E.I.P.H. has a detrimental effect on performance in Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds. The only treatment that has been shown to prevent the occurrence and decrease severity of E.I.P.H. in Thoroughbred racehorses is furosemide. The result of furosemide administration is a decrease in pulmonary vascular pressures. On average, horses administered furosemide have better performance. This could be attributable to the reduction in E.I.P.H. or to other factors. Horses administered furosemide on a routine basis have not been recognized to experience detrimental effects. Furosemide does not mask detection or other agents when modern analytical methods are used.
The invitation-only event was co-chaired by Pegasus Training and Equine Rehabilitation Center founder and TOC board member Dr. Mark Dedomenico and Dr. Wayne McIlwraith of Colorado State University. Travel expenses for all participants were paid for by Dedomenico. The agenda included discussion about the status of knowledge and research into EIPH, racetrack surface injuries, traumatic joint injury including catastrophic injuries, blood bio-markers that could signal impending injuries, and the use of platelet rich plasma and stem cells in treating equine injuries.
In addition to issuing a consensus statement on EIPH, the panel identified several key areas for future research, including cardiac and vascular physiology contributing to EIPH in the US and abroad, pharmacological agents and their efficacy, the potential role of genetics, and the effects of EIPH on well-being.
The panelists included Samantha Brooks, PhD of Cornell University, Gordon Cohen, MD, PhD, MBA of UC San Francisco, Mark Dedomenico, MD, David Frisbie, DVM, PhD and Chris Kawcak, DVM, PhD of Colorado State University, Alan Guthrie, BVSc, PhD of University of Pretoria, South Africa, Kenneth Hinchcliff, BVSc, MS, PhD of University of Melbourne, Wayne McIlwraith, BVSc, PhD, DSc, FRCVS and Paul Morley, DVM, PhD of Colorado State University, and Ed Robinson, BVet, PhD and Alice Stack, DVM of Michigan State University.
The Breeders’ Cup phase-out of Lasix began in 2012, banning the medication on race day from all events restricted to two-year-olds. The current plan calls for all Breeders’ Cup runners to compete Lasix-free in 2013. Lasix was first introduced as a race day medication in the US in the early 1970’s.
According to McIlwraith, “The current medication policy of the American Association of Equine Practitioners is no race day medication except Lasix. Lasix remained because there was scientific proof that it reduced EIPH. That has been our stance all along. It is also the stance of the Racing Medication Testing Consortium.”
TOC Chairman Mike Pegram, a Grade I Kentucky Derby-winning owner, said the forum was important to help understand both sides of the issue.
“I haven’t heard one negative thing being said that Lasix is detrimental to the horse or that it enhances performance because it lets a horse perform to his or her ability,” said Pegram. “I’m trying to find out what the other side of the argument is, to the people that may not like the use of this medication.”
All agreed that the Thoroughbred industry needs to develop funding for research on EIPH. TOC will also look to breeders and sales companies for funding, which could total several million dollars over the next few years. When asked if EIPH and the other critical issues could be fixed, Dedomenico said, “Absolutely. We just need to get started.”

Aqueduct: Dominguez out of intensive care; rehabilitation possibilities under discussion
By Dave Litfin
Barbara D. Livingston
Ramon Dominguez is no longer in intensive care but is still not allowed to have visitors.
Ramon Dominguez, who continues to progress in his recovery from a slightly displaced skull fracture at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, was transferred Thursday from the neurological intensive care onit to a medical step-down unit.
“The step-down unit is an intermediate location between the ICU and a regular, inpatient room,” said his wife, Sharon Dominguez, in a press release issued by the New York Racing Association on Saturday afternoon.
“Ramon’s doctors say he is recovering well, and we’re beginning to discuss his rehab options.”
Currently, there is no timetable for Dominguez’s release, and doctors have prohibited him from having visitors.
“We’re so appreciative of everyone’s support, thoughts and prayers,” Sharon Dominguez said. “Many people have also given generously in Ramon’s name to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, which is a cause he has always been passionate about. Those vital donations provide financial assistance to permanently disabled riders, and we would encourage anyone who wishes to show support for Ramon to donate at http://www.pdjf.org.”
Dominguez was injured when his mount, Convocation, clipped heels nearing the quarter pole of the seventh race at Aqueduct on Friday, Jan. 18. He was unseated and appeared to be struck by a trailing horse. On Tuesday, he was moved from Jamaica Medical Center Hospital in Queens, N.Y. to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan.
The leading rider in New York the past four years, Dominguez was honored with his third straight Eclipse Award after winning 341 races and a record $25,582,252 in 2012.

Dear Sign: Oswald is now referred to an an “ex tropical cyclone” but is still moving down the east coast – has dumped a lot on southern Queensland, northern NSW and down the south coast of NSW – the cyclones/monsoons are a little later this year, hence the build up of the unbearable heat across the centre and down into the southern states. But the amount of rain, as is normal from these sort of filthy storms is that too much comes too quickly and causes flooding, and loss of life and livestock. One poor farmer had moved his cattle to higher ground to escape the rising waters, only to see around 40 of them blown into the river by the gale force winds. But at least it’s abating now, and at least some of the fires are out.

@Sign….read a tweet about the Holy Bull finish…reminded me of Sec/Sham derby in a way….Sec broke the track record….so did IMLD but then Sham also broke the record…not sure about Bobby but his run would have to have been close to the record..
IMLD got a 104 Beyer…Bobby got a 100…if one uses these…that is Bobbys best by about 6 points …so in the end…both of them did great…IMLD was my pick..but Bobby is improving off last year and so…it begins…going to be a great year
…..
I really like IMLD because he has Lord Avie and Donraile Court in his pedigree..i think DC as a broodmare sire bears watching…

Great comments and insight about Bobby, read somewhere he had a 108 beyer,
was that for another race. These two may be the first great contenders for
the Derby, really like the winner too. He was very determined and just pulled
away and said bye bye !!! Did not realize Lord Avie was in IMLD pedigree, what
a wonderful win for his sire.
Not sure if you read Janet’s comment about he Yearling Cam at Winstar,
she has a hard time finding the yearlings, they must be a very busy group.
So exciting 12 Z is going to be learning his lessons so and he does so good
with being lead around in his stall, he does not seem to try and lead anymore.
Very smart boy !!!
I think Shanghai Bobby ran a very good race finishing second to IMLD. It will be fun to see if these two meet again in a Derby Prep. SB has 6 starts; 5 wins and 1 second.
Another horse in that race that impresses is Bern Identity (sire Bernstein). He finished fifth after repeatedly being bumped at the start of the Holy Bull. His record is 7 starts; 3 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third. This is the first time he was out of the money in a race. Hugs, JB

…Just returned home last nite from a weekend in AZ. Worked on Sunday at Heart of Tucson horse rescue and rehab farm. The president, Judy Glore, had been seriously ill since last yr but seems to be on the road to recovery. She’s wonderful and I enjoyed every moment there.

What about the color of a horse determining the temperament?
Secretariat, the Big Red, was a rambunctious, boisterous, showing lots of exuberance even in his older yrs., remembered so by his groom & the people around him then in some of the old footage. Shackleford, also a red, looked like he could be a handful, I’ll have another has a lively streak. Are the Reds more temperamental than their less flashy cousins?
That is interesting. I do not know if they are more temperamental
or not. I recall that Ferdinand was very easy going and was one
of Charlie Whittingham’s favorites. The same for Curlin, he is big and rather imposing, but also easy to get along with.
It does seem that the reds are more boisterous though.
Dear Judy: That temper thing certainly applies to our Prime Minister!

Dear Kathy R,
Too funny. I dated a guy with “red” hair and boy was that a mistake.
Firey tempered and not a very nice person.
Think the color of hair is more reflective of a humans personality
than a horses. TB had a distinct temperment that runs on a continuum,
from Ferdinand like to Shackelford like or Alpha like – very typical for
a “TB to get upset and step on himself” as Karian Mc Laughlin said of
Alpha. They are so hot natured and it comes out in various ways.
The party type like Shackelford and then in introspective ones like Ferdinand and then the opinionated ones like HDG, and those are the ones that have something to say about everything and negotiate everything.
Sunny B,
Temperments are bred into animals. Now the handler of my dog, has imported Belgian Malimois from Finland and France to out cross the
aggression that has been bred into the breed in the US. Mr. Kronfeld
actually bred “V” temperment, which has been passed down to all of
her offspring.

1. Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy-Dream Rush, by Wild Rush) Todd Pletcher– With the defection of Sign, I needed a new number one, and this one fits the bill. I look at this one’s breeding, full of class, stamina, and speed, combined with her strong record as a juvenile, and cannot help but think that she will be a major factor on the first Friday of May. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies loss can be explained for a myriad of reasons, not the least of which was a very speed biased racetrack. Her tactical style should fit in very well at nine furlongs at Churchill Downs, and it would seem that Stonestreet is absolutely loaded in this division with Kauai Katie sticking to one-turn races, with this one going after even bigger goals. http://www.horseracingnation.com/blogs/zatt/2013_Kentucky_Oaks_A_Baker_s_Dozen_123

Dear Judy B,
Hopefully they have put RR on adequan, it is a miracle injection for stiffness and arthritis.

PAULICK REPORT: VETERNIARY CONCENSUS STATEMENT ON EIPH AND
THE NEED FOR LASIX AND MORE CURRENT RESEARCH (last research on this
area 1985)
(PETA loses this one for now, thank goodness, the horses are being put first;
sad to have 3 bleed in the BC in 2012. Will have to see what BC does for
2013) FYI – A consensus statement is the STRONGEST statement made by the
veterinary/medical community and sets a standard that should be followed
or …….. action can be taken against those who do not follow it.

DAILY RACING FORM: RAMON DOMIGUEZ UPDATE
(out of ICU, but still very hush hush hush about what is going on – thoughts and prayer
to him and his family; for a full recovery)

Kathy R.

Good morning all
@Sign….read a tweet about the Holy Bull finish…reminded me of Sec/Sham derby in a way….Sec broke the track record….so did IMLD but then Sham also broke the record…not sure about Bobby but his run would have to have been close to the record..
…..
just a couple of thoughts…ZENNY are you resting and keeping all those mud bath spa appointments….I am taking myself to bathhouse row for the “works” in your honor later this week…that always works the kinks out…

Dear Carol,
Great comments and insight about Bobby, read somewhere he had a 108 beyer,
was that for another race.

Dear Sign:
I think Shanghai Bobby ran a very good race finishing second to IMLD. It will be fun to see if these two meet again in a Derby Prep. SB has 6 starts; 5 wins and 1 second.
Another horse in that race that impresses is Bern Identity (sire Bernstein). He finished fifth after repeatedly being bumped at the start of the Holy Bull. His record is 7 starts; 3 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third. This is the first time he was out of the money in a race. Hugs, JB

Trina Nagele in SoCal
Good question, Sunny. I’ll be interested to see what Z-sters say.
Janet Newman
Sunny B
That is interesting. I do not know if they are more temperamental
or not. I recall that Ferdinand was very easy going and was one
of Charlie Whittingham’s favorites. The same for Curlin, he is big and rather imposing, but also easy to get along with.
It does seem that the reds are more boisterous though.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Sunny B.:
Let’s not forget Northern Dancer and Dynaformer. Both Bays. I guess it’s just the nature of the horse more than the color.

Dear Judy: That temper thing certainly applies to our Prime Minister!

signofthetimes; President of the Texas RN Club; RN philosopher
Interesting question.
Max
