Happy Thursday,
We have a very special post for you today! Cozmic One has been training in New York with John Shirreffs, and today’s post is an update on his progress–straight from Dottie and John!
Enjoy!
-Team Z
Greetings from Barn 41—Belmont Park, New York!
Hello Everyone,
We hope each of you is doing very well. Everything here is moving right along. It is a beautiful fall day in New York and we thought it would be fun to share a COZMIC ONE update with you.
Coz is a big, strong, handsome colt! He loves to train and and enjoys going to the race track. He exhibits high energy levels and shows great strength and endurance. Another quality John comments about often is his intelligence. He’s a very smart colt, another trait he definitely shares with his Mother.
Physically, it is quite interesting to note how his body is changing and maturing as a result of his exercise and training program. Coz is developing a very strong shoulder and a long length of stride, two physical qualities John so admired in Zenyatta as she prepared for racing. Needless to say, it is exciting to see her colt developing them as well.
Each day’s lessons builds upon the prior skills taught. Coz has breezed a ½ mile in company twice galloping out with energy, as well as working on his starting gate lessons. He’s currently jogged out of the gate twice and will continue to do more gate work as he gets closer to running. Physically and mentally, Coz is developing a very solid foundation in all skills so necessary for his future career as a racehorse.
Cozmic One is a very busy guy each day. Here’s this morning:
5:30 a.m. Coz is up and looking out of his stall ready to begin his day. He is hand-walked for about 30 minutes each morning.
6:00 a.m. Coz is now back in his stall and gets brushed and ready for his breakfast. He loves to eat!
8:15 a.m. He is tacked up and ready to walk to the paddock to begin his exercise on the main track. At Belmont Park, it is a long walk from our barn to the paddock and Coz enjoys doing this. It helps him ‘warm up’ and he gets a chance to see everything going on and experience all types of noises and sounds that happen at the race track. Once in the paddock, he walks around, stands in a saddling stall for a bit, and gets to experience this environment.
8:45 a.m. Coz leaves the paddock to walk through the tunnel to the main track. Once on the main track, he stands for a few minutes and then walks to the 1 ¼ pole (Belmont is a 1 ½ mile oval), turns and jogs to the ⅞ pole, and then gallops 1 ½ miles at a very good pace.
He then stands for a few moments preparing to leave the main track and begin his walk back to the barn.
10:15 a.m. Once back at the barn, Coz continues to cool out by walking around the shed row. He has a bath and returns to his stall for further grooming.
11:00 a.m. IT’S LUNCH TIME! This is truly one of his favorite times of the day! Coz is definitely a good eater who has a very good appetite. One of his favorite treats are the Apple Cookies the Mosses send to the barn for him and his pals. He absolutely LOVES them!
It is so special having Coz in the barn. Having worked with Zenyatta and having her with us each day for so many years, it is a complete JOY to get to know her son so intimately and work with him every day. As John commented last night, “At this time, I could not be more pleased with his progress.”
As Zenyatta would say, this is TOO CUTE! Without a doubt, she would be very proud of him!
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Hugs to all~

October 23 Cherokee Devotional
Courage is like muscle, it doesn’t develop to full capacity until it is used. Courage comes when we stir it up in our spirits and refuse to look at the shape things are in or believe there is nothing we can do about it. Most of us are timid about facing up to what we know is wrong. It is so much easier to let things ride than it is to take a thorny problem by the smooth handle and shake out the causes. To have courage doesn’t mean we have to be aggressive and show everyone we are not afraid. Some of the bravest men in history were Indian chiefs trying to protect their land and their people. They used their skills in speaking to bring understanding.
My friends, your people have both intellect and heart; you use these…in what way you can do the best to live. My people…are precisely the same.

Dear Kathy.Very mild here today for shopping.Have you seen the wonderful video about the wolves at Yellowstone Park.I have always loved them, wish they could re-introduce them over here. There had been some thought about having them in Scotland but the farmers need I say more??Will is enjoying his last days “smelling the roses”as they say his health has declined rapidly now.He is a very good age though.I could see Zoe wishing you a great day, love her Halloween outfit.
Walter Melon has grown with Marty,Poor Oliber in the cooking pot!Someone commented the cover photo was like the Village People on LSD!
Fubu has reached 9000 friends very quickly had to love him sucking his paw I used to suck my thumb as a child My mum didn’t like “dummies”! Poor Boo is having a mid-week snooze I know how he feels!Have you seen Mango’s new website oh gosh when she said she wanted to phone God to thank him,I just melted!!God bless her and mum Judy.Have a great day.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Holly, Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
Enjoy the mild day! Have not seen that video yet. Will look for it. Poor Will. So touching that he loves the flowers so much. Zoe is definitely one of my favorites. Such a darling little girl. Marty never fails to entertain. Sometimes it’s hard to make out what Fubu is doing since he’s black. I never heard of a cat sucking his paw. Boo has the luxury of taking a nap whenever he pleases. The worst is when you wish you could take a nap and you’re at work! Happened to me just the other day. Will have to check out Mango’s new website. Sounds like it will definitely be a tear-jerker! Have a lovely Friday Eve. Love and hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy.

I am so sorry Brown Panther was so frightened at Woodbine and hope he gets lots of time ahead of rrace day with the pony who will escort him to the gate at the Breeder’s Cup.
Still praying for continued healing for Dubai.
I have been thinking about Cooper and General also.

The Panther seemed far from frightened at Woodbine. He’s a strong, handsome horse. According to reports, he was displaying loads of confidence in the days ahead of the race. He threw his exercise rider on the Friday before the race. He ran the entire course before the start and looked exceptionally good doing it too. He might have been channelling Big D, or maybe he was acting out for an attractive filly? Only the Panther knows for sure.

Thanks BGG. Not exactly sure how these are used. I know they are not what the horses will be wearing when they actually race. Anyone?
Melody Katrobos
Sandy,
I believe the saddle towels are worn when the horses go out to the track to gallop or workout prior to the Breeder’s Cup.
Bluegrass Girl
Sandy
The workout saddle towels are used by the BC entrants during workouts.
It helps identify the horse and what division (color) they are running in
So, if you are at Santa Anita and see a horse with a purple saddle towel
with the number 652-you are watching Goldencents.
It helps clockers, trainers, owners and fans.
This is not used during the races.
Hugs, Keta
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks very much Melody and BGG. That makes snse – couldn’t figure out what the different colors meant let alone the numbers. I would be watching Goldencents for sure! :-)

Velazquez Q&A: Jockeys should speak for the sport
Karen M. Johnson Thoroughbred Racing Commentary October 23, 2014
This year will mark jockey John Velazquez’s 19th Breeders’ Cup appearance.
With 12 previous winners at North America’s year-end Championships, the 42-year-old rider is tied for fourth among the event’s top riders by victories.
Last year at Santa Anita, Velazquez could not add to that tally. Winless on Day One, the rider suffered life-threatening injuries when his first Breeders’ Cup mount on Saturday, Secret Compass, suffered a broken leg during the running of the Juvenile Fillies.

BGG,
Thanks for posting the article about that “dratted” Johnny V. He is one of best around and I like him a bunch although he seems to ride against and beat my favorites a lot of the time. A very classy gentleman.
And he is riding Carpe Diem in the BC. Perhaps he will win with one of my favs.

KathyR from Downunder: Thanks for the kind thoughts. Just a whacked-out nutjob who fancies himself a jihadist. SO sad for the young soldier’s family. On a nicer note: I am reading an ebook titled Black Cavier by Gerard Whateley, am enjoying it very much. I’m sure learning a lot about Australian racing. So different from North American racing. Peter Moony is some trainer. Nelly was some horse.
KathyR
Dear Nicki:
Glad you’re enjoying the book on Nelly: Gerard Whateley is an engaging bloke, who loves his racing: He’s in his element at this time of year when the Spring Racing Carnival is on. Peter Moody is also a top bloke. He finally took a holiday in the off season and went to Europe with some mates to walk the battlefields of the First World War. Peter was the perfect trainer for the horse – some others would have pushed her too hard, and the fairytale of Black Caviar would never have happened. Peter is already down to train Nelly’s baby, so that will be good. Was so impressed with the way you folk are handling this tragedy – found it very emotional when the MPs sang Oh Canada. God bless you all. Hugs KathyR

Debbie. Didn’t want you to worry that the Panther was frightened. It looked like most others were frightened of him. He was in total control. Thank goodness the jockey and Brown Panther and other horses were not hurt.

No need to change. This jockey knows the Panther and has had success with him in the past. The problem arose when he got off the Panther to settle him, was told to remount and could not get his legs in the irons before the Panther bolted. No other horses were involved. The Panther was entirely alone. It was kind of beautiful to see him run that course like that on his own.

Went to the farm this afternoon. Sweet Dubai came toddling over to me on his shaky little legs and let me kiss him on his velvet nose. I offered him small bits of stud muffin treat and he took them and also two mints. He is still on both antibiotics and pain meds. The tender spot on his front right did, in fact, develop an abscess and it is still draining. Angela is wonderful; she’s taking great care of our little fighter. Dubai thanks all of you for your continued prayers.
Max, Frank is doing very well. He’s content and right at home now.
Hudson is missing her Moms as they will be in Florida until the 28th. I took a photo of her and sent it with a text to them from her saying that she misses them.
Charlie thoroughly enjoyed his treats and was supervising me as I swept up in the stall area of the barn. I have to be very meticulous in my work as he has a critical eye. He follows every sweep of the broom.
Will visit again over the weekend. Love and Hugs, JB

I’m behind here as usual. So glad to hear about the good visit and Dubai’s progress. He really IS a fighter!
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sandy:
Yes, Dubai really is a fighter. Last week at this time he was unable to walk the distance to the window of his stall to greet us. He was laying down most of the time; standing only a little while to eat from his hay rack or feed bucket. Sometimes he wouldn’t even stand up; he would eat the hay that was scattered on the floor of his stall. So the fact that it’s reversed and he’s standing most of the day and laying down to sleep is very huge. He’s making progress. Thank you again for your prayers. Love and Hugs, JB

Thanks for the latest news, Judy, I’m sure that “little kiss on his velvet nose” seals your connection with him, like wax on an important envelope. I do the same thing with my “Baby” pitbull, except on the top of her head, as her nose has been places I don’t want to kiss. It’s got to be heartening that Dubai has made such progess since last week! That IS huge. And I’m glad Charlie keeps you on your toes, with his endless curiosity.

Dear Kathy R:
How are General and Tiny T doing? Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Judy:
General is well – the vet was in touch yesterday, and is pleased with his progress. We go in for blood tests early in November.
I’m having a few problems with my little girl. Well, one 16.2 problem that comes in a brash chestnut who likes to kick. Came within a whisker of a serious injury this morning when Red put on one of his performances. He’s jealous of the attention I give the girl, and tries to physically push me out of the way (which he can do very easily) and bite and kick the girl. Unfortunately giving him a smack on the shoulder only seems to upset my little girl, so am waiting for the Elegant Emily to return from competition interstate to see what we can do. I threatened to take Red to the track today to let an annoying little man (or nice girl) sort him out over a reasonable distance, but know that’s not going to happen – he’s retired because of repeated problems with bowed tendons. But that doesn’t excuse his filthy behaviour, and I must admit to feeling very intimidated by him, which is the worst thing I can be doing at the moment. My next post may well come from the fracture ward of the Canberra hospital. Or I’ll haunt you all if my injury is worse! Hugs KathyR
Celeste_in_TX
Sorry to hear Thurzel has a pasture mate that is giving you problems. It’s hard to know what to do since you don’t want to scare her by being more firm in shooing him away so spend the time with her. Just try to hold your ground and not let him know he is intimidating you – that’s my suggestion, but I know it isn’t easy. There are some bossy horses around every barn I think and until they figure out they can’t push you around, they can be a real pest.
Ann NC
Kathy R- You must let him know, You are the Boss mare! Love to Tiny T.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Kathy R,
Seems like you resolve one problem only to have to deal with another!! Now a bossy horse who wants to push you around……been there, done that. We just let our gelding know he wasn’t going to push us around by carrying a crop with us. I realize you might scare Thurzel so you have to be careful. Every circumstance is different just as every horse is different. Don’t lose heart though. hugs
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
I admire your lighthearted witty comments, but this is no joke. Be careful as we don’t want you or Tiny T injured. Sometimes I see Angela make circular passes with the end of a lead rope (like a lasso) as horses are being aggressive when she’s leading a particular horse out of the paddock. That helps keep them away. She sometimes even flicks their rumps with it to get them to back off. You might want to try that and hopefully, it won’t spook Tiny T. Talk this over with Emily and I think it would be best if she could assist you.
It’s just amazing how aggressive they can be once they’ve formed an attachment. When Hudson first came to the farm she actually rushed at Angela once in the paddock when she was trying to halter GG to lead her back to the barn; Angela fell down, but was OK. Eventually, with regulated periods of stall time and paddock time and a lot of lunging, Hudson realized that she was not going to be permanently separated from GG and she never did it again. GG has since been sold and is no longer at the farm. Hudson has a new BFF, Trinity, and there’s no longer a problem fetching her from the paddock. I know you do not have the option of stall time for Red, but maybe Emily could halter him and lead him out of the paddock and then you can safely lead Tiny T out. Hopefully, when this becomes routine for the horses, Red’s “filthy” behavior will be a thing of the past. Love and Hugs, JB
SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
Kathy R. Take care of yourself! I truly believe that there can be jealousies among horses. You are right, you can not let them know you are intiminated. I learned that the past 2 years at CV. What would the horse whisper say as to handle this?
I wonder? Walk the horses haltered side by side? I do not know.
I hope help is on the way soon. Wish you and the horses the best.

I really enjoyed the article on Life is Sweet. Then the video showing how she is not a morning mare made me laugh as I remembered John’s words from the article, that “she’s not in a hurry to do anything, you just need to be patient and wait for her to want to do it.” He is such a talented trainer who really gets his horses and knows them inside out. Oh Hovis! I know just how you feel. Absolutely NOTHING is easy! Great picture though. Thanks, as always, to Sheena via Max for our Friday treat :-)

Dear Max:
Well, the good news is you’re back posting Hovis’ Diary. The bad news, Hovis has a visit scheduled with the Needle Man. Hope all reports come out good for Hovis. Love the photo; such a “manly” man. Love and Hugs, JB

Hi, Oh my dear poor Hovis. I am hoping Hovis is improving and has a better day tomorrow. You got to go with the flow right now Hovis because I love you.

October 24 Cherokee Devotional
As children we were taught that if we couldn’t say something good, we shouldn’t speak at all. Children should be taught the same thing now, and adults should remember what they learned. To keep a gentle tongue is a constant challenge. There are so many things to speak our minds about-though it might not be heard in the din of other voices. Wherever a dominant personality runs on verbal destruction, there’s not going to be any peace. The Cherokee calls this chaos a e hi s dv, a pain or an ache or a headache. It keeps everyone feeling just bad enough that they can’t give their best. Where there is hassle and harassment, there can be no constructive work. There will be nothing achieved without a gentle tongue.
We took an oath not to do any wrong to each other or to scheme against each other.

Dear Kathy.Am late again.I haven’t even had time to see what Hovis has been up too!Got a horrid headache.I am thinking of Tom and Will today,it’s always so sad to bid farewell even when a 4 legged friend is old and sick but he’s had a great time with Tom and that’s what matters most of all.Still very mild here and damp.Mango has picked another friend for a cart! She even got a reply from God yesterday! And got a load of diaper covers what better gift for a girl.Beautiful video of her at the rescue especially when she learned to do “zoomies”.
Poor Marty has ran out of snacks and he was dressed as a porcupime as well!he’ll reach 14000 before long!Lovely video on joey about a nanny dog called Boots so gentle with the kittens.Got to read Hovis now.Have a great Friday.Love and hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
