Happy Thursday,
We have a very special post for you today! Cozmic One has been training in New York with John Shirreffs, and today’s post is an update on his progress–straight from Dottie and John!
Enjoy!
-Team Z
Greetings from Barn 41—Belmont Park, New York!
Hello Everyone,
We hope each of you is doing very well. Everything here is moving right along. It is a beautiful fall day in New York and we thought it would be fun to share a COZMIC ONE update with you.
Coz is a big, strong, handsome colt! He loves to train and and enjoys going to the race track. He exhibits high energy levels and shows great strength and endurance. Another quality John comments about often is his intelligence. He’s a very smart colt, another trait he definitely shares with his Mother.
Physically, it is quite interesting to note how his body is changing and maturing as a result of his exercise and training program. Coz is developing a very strong shoulder and a long length of stride, two physical qualities John so admired in Zenyatta as she prepared for racing. Needless to say, it is exciting to see her colt developing them as well.
Each day’s lessons builds upon the prior skills taught. Coz has breezed a ½ mile in company twice galloping out with energy, as well as working on his starting gate lessons. He’s currently jogged out of the gate twice and will continue to do more gate work as he gets closer to running. Physically and mentally, Coz is developing a very solid foundation in all skills so necessary for his future career as a racehorse.
Cozmic One is a very busy guy each day. Here’s this morning:
5:30 a.m. Coz is up and looking out of his stall ready to begin his day. He is hand-walked for about 30 minutes each morning.
6:00 a.m. Coz is now back in his stall and gets brushed and ready for his breakfast. He loves to eat!
8:15 a.m. He is tacked up and ready to walk to the paddock to begin his exercise on the main track. At Belmont Park, it is a long walk from our barn to the paddock and Coz enjoys doing this. It helps him ‘warm up’ and he gets a chance to see everything going on and experience all types of noises and sounds that happen at the race track. Once in the paddock, he walks around, stands in a saddling stall for a bit, and gets to experience this environment.
8:45 a.m. Coz leaves the paddock to walk through the tunnel to the main track. Once on the main track, he stands for a few minutes and then walks to the 1 ¼ pole (Belmont is a 1 ½ mile oval), turns and jogs to the ⅞ pole, and then gallops 1 ½ miles at a very good pace.
He then stands for a few moments preparing to leave the main track and begin his walk back to the barn.
10:15 a.m. Once back at the barn, Coz continues to cool out by walking around the shed row. He has a bath and returns to his stall for further grooming.
11:00 a.m. IT’S LUNCH TIME! This is truly one of his favorite times of the day! Coz is definitely a good eater who has a very good appetite. One of his favorite treats are the Apple Cookies the Mosses send to the barn for him and his pals. He absolutely LOVES them!
It is so special having Coz in the barn. Having worked with Zenyatta and having her with us each day for so many years, it is a complete JOY to get to know her son so intimately and work with him every day. As John commented last night, “At this time, I could not be more pleased with his progress.”
As Zenyatta would say, this is TOO CUTE! Without a doubt, she would be very proud of him!
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Hugs to all~
Coz, John and Dottie

Thank you so much for this update. Zenyatta was so special to us all and I am so proud of her children! it was such an honor to see her up close and feed her peppermints. It was truly an amazing experience. Go Coz!

I don’t understand why he hasn’t worked again in close to a month. Typically, sound horses will work at least once a week if not slightly more. Did he have any minor setbacks that caused him to miss a work or two?

This training time is so exciting. Thanks for the updates!

Sounds like very hopeful news. Makes my day to hear this. Can’t drop the ball yet on praying real hard for this situation. Were all so fragile really. Will continue really hard lifting him up each day. I’m calling on the Good Lord and Angels for help.
Go Gabby, my wonderful girl. I’ll find your race tomorrow. Love You always

Dear Kathy:
Thank you so very much. So funny the way things go with horses. They go down hill so fast and then things can turn around when you’ve reached your wits end. It was exactly one month ago that Dubai came to the farm (9/18/14) and he went lame on the 20th. Phew, it’s been an adventure. Hopefully, he’s on his way. Angela is something else. One of the best days of my life was when I found her for Charlie. Love and Hugs, JB

Whoops!James Doyle Noble Mission’s jockey received a 7-day ban and £10,000 fine for mis-use of the whip.He did only use it in the final furlong but….Hugs Sheena.

Way to go Dubai! I am so happy to hear that you are doing much better! Tears started running down my face when I read Judy’s post. You are such a brave boy to not give up when you hurt so much. Keep fighting to get even better, brave boy; you can do it! I will keep you in my prayers until I hear that you are 100% again.
Thank God that Angela is the person who chose you to bring home from the track. She did not give up on you when many others would have. She is truly an angel who will give you the best of everything for the rest of your life. Thank you Angela, for doing so much for Dubai; you are a REAL HERO!
Thank you, Dottie & John, aka” Team Coz”, for the great update & photos of Coz. I was thrilled to meet John, Coz & Tug at Saratoga this past summer. Sorry I missed you, Dottie.
I am not going to ask when he will start in his first race because I know that John will enter him only when Coz tells him that he is ready. Since Belmont will be closing for the winter soon, I would not be surprised if Coz’s first race will be in CA after John moves his stable back there until spring in NY. Unfortunately for me, my local newspapers show only the NYRA entries & results & those of the Breeders’ Cup & Triple Crown races. I will have to rely on this blog to keep me updated on Coz’s races.
Happy Birthday, Thurzel! This will be your best year so far because you are beginning it with a great mom & family!

JudyB,

Dear Shrilee, Donna Z, Sheena, Max, Peggy, Marshall, Ann, Sandy, Kathy R, Sue Fredrick, Barb W, Debbie S, Elizabeth, Vicki B, Sally B, Pam (hope I got everyone) and Z Fans:
Here are two photos of Dubai and a video. Thank you all once again for your past prayers and continued prayers for him. I think he’s on his way. Sorry for my stupid voice in the background of the video. Have to learn to remember not to talk when I’m filming. Having a problem with my flash player, so the video may be choppy. You may have to pause it, let it buffer and try it again, but you can see him on his feet; which is a miracle. I call Angela “The Miracle Worker for Horses”. Love and Hugs, JB

When Zenyatta burst onto the horse racing scene in late 2007, she was known as multiple Grade 1 winner Balance’s half-sister. By the time Zenyatta retired, the roles had reversed.

October 19 Cherokee Devotional
Today may be a turning point. It happens that way-not with flashing lights and fanfare, but quietly. In the past we searched for reasons, for something we could pinpoint as the catalyst for change. We could never decide what it was, though we said many things. Something in us, something about our awareness, gives us reason to suddenly be conscious of new circumstances and new ideas. We are able to think outside the limits of our usual methods. Life, for no apparent reason, begins to fit together as though we found a piece of the puzzle that completes the picture. As turning points go, some are not particularly great to see, but are often hidden in such small, ordinary events as to go undetected. Our part is to be aware of the change and make the most of it while it is at its strongest.
The land…belongs to the first who sits down on his blanket…which he has thrown down on the ground, and till he leaves it, no other has a right.
