Ashton
I’ve been out of town and I’m broken hearted…………..El Vino. Like Cynthia said (far better than I ever could) I hope somehow he knew much he was loved. My heart breaks for Cynthia. I think I know more than most, just how deeply she forever loves him. My sincere deepest, heartbroken, heartfelt condolences to Cynthia, Mr. Shirreffs and to all who loved him. El Vino was far too special, loved and Cynthia worked so very hard to make his name known for her words and video to not be posted here at his Queen’s site.
EL VINO- May you run free forever, and say hi to Moma.RIP GREAT KNIGHT. From his FB page:
“EL VINO
Dear Stable Friends,
There is an empty stall in El Vino’s barn today. It is with a fractured heart that I must tell you, there will be no messages from our beloved El Vino forevermore. As one who has had the joy of writing as his voice for the past one year, eight months, and nine days, I will be speaking alone for the first time.
On what should have been one of many more happy days of retirement for our beautiful boy, the worst happened. While playing in high spirits with his pasture pals, El Vino suffered a severe leg injury, and was subsequently euthanized. Even as I type these words, I don’t want to believe that they are true. For all those who worried about El Vino’s safety on the racetrack, this will seem the cruelest of ironies. The fact is, that safety for these luminous creatures is an illusion. No matter how supposedly safe the racing conditions or secure the paddock, they are perpetually at risk.If El Vino could speak, I believe that he would tell us not to dwell on the sadness of his passing, but on the shining story of his life. One of the hallmarks of nobility is the willingness to put aside ambitions for one’s self for the greater good. While El Vino had no choice in his selection as workmate to the great Zenyatta, he served her honorably and well, and his name will be intrinsically linked to her legacy for all-time. Whatever his accomplishments might have been had he not been chosen to devote his talent to our Queen, this will stand. That El Vino went on to win five races following Zenyatta’s retirement is testimony to a heart that could not be eclipsed, even by one of the most magnificent warriors to ever grace the track. He departs with 855 followers, despite the fact that he was neither a big-name horse nor a stakes star.
I would like to say a few personal words about El Vino. I visited him a number of times over the past two years, and am convinced that he was able to recognize me after only one visit. As Jay Hovdey of The Daily Racing Form described him, he was a “pepperpot” and “a proud little horse,” inquisitive and demanding of goodies from his callers, pawing the ground and shaking his head impatiently until the treats appeared. He eschewed mints and apples, and was a carrot connoisseur. He knew an organic carrot when he smelled one, and could empty an entire bag in record time. I know he could tell the difference, because I tested him with both, and he always opted for the organic. El Vino knew that he was a very special being. His bearing was regal, even in defeat. He had the sweetest face which he could twist into the most whimsical and endearing expressions, and amazingly bright and wondering eyes. We can only hope that he somehow sensed how immensely he is loved. Sleep softly, noble Knight. Your work is done.
El VIno’s page will remain as a memorial to him and in gratitude to all of those who love and supported him. To the latter, I would like to say yet again that you are an extraordinary group of people, who have made this page the warm and truly unique place that it has become. You have been and are a credit to El Vino, and an asset to racing. I hope that your love of the sport and its splendid horses will continue. May all of your days be Three-Whinny ones, and may you always remember “that one brief shining moment,” and the role which El Vino played in it. Through you, Camelot and its gallant Knight of the Realm will never be forgot.
“Time for us to part now, we won’t say goodbye;
Look for me in rainbows, shining in the sky.
Every waking moment, and all your whole life through
Just look for me and love me, as you know I loved you.”
Lyrics: Conn Bernard (1990).”

Such heartbreak over hearing the news that our beloved, and yes we do mean beloved, El Vino has crossed rainbow bridge. We enjoyed visiting his FB page because he always had interesting stories and pictures of the horses we have come to know and admire. When his owner retired him and sent him to his farm to roam the green pastures we were thrilled. His retirement was far to short but knowing how genuinely he was loved takes a bit of the ache away. El Vino was an original … his goofy grin was a sight to behold. He served our Queen with pride, love and humility. May he always feel the wind in his face and prance forever among the clouds. For Cynthia, his owner and all who cared for him…{{{ }}}.
Sue FL CPRC
OMG I am crying again. Your note is just perfect Sue. Thank you for posting it.
It has been a hard couple of days. I loved Vinie so much but until he was gone I myself did not realize how much that (as you say) goofy grin crept into my life. I even asked if I could find out now that he is gone where in Florida he was. I think if I could just go there it would help relieve the pain. I was informed that his farm still can’t be reviled so I can just dream of where he might have been.
Vinie is in a perfect green pasture with loads of friends. I just hope he does not miss his Mistletoe to much.
Cynthia H.
I would like to thank Ashton and express my heartfelt gratitude to her and all of you who expressed their love for El Vino and immense sorrow at his passing. He belonged to all of us. Sometimes a certain horse will reach out and grab your heart. That hold lasts forever. El Vino is that kind of horse for me.
In April of 2011, Dottie dedicated a Diary entry to El Vino, following his second consecutive win at Santa Anita. For those who would like to re-visit it and read her glowing words about one of Zenyatta’s gallant Knights, here it is:

If you bet on any horse at any time, you take a risk. It’s not like this was a secret kept from the public and betters. The whole world knows that the Moose dances to no one’s tune. Let the Moose run.

Yes, Moosie makes the races more interesting, as we wait to see what he may or may not, do. Run, Moosie, run — or not!

Dear BGG:
Thanks for this too cute photo of Moosie. It’s too bad the powers that be could not see fit to just refund for tickets on Moose (or any other horse who refuses to race). The Moose has many fans who would have preferred that result instead of seeing him banned from racing. Love and Hugs, JB

Allegations Tarnish Cost of Freedom Retirement Story
by Ray Paulick The Paulick Report 01.09.2014
It started out as a feel-good story on the week before Christmas – two racetrackers in Southern California working together to retire an aging Grade 1 winner and millionaire who’d fallen to the bottom claiming levels. But that sweet story turned sour when one of the parties involved was accused of attempting to conceal and misappropriate funds being raised to purchase the horse and retire him to a good home. A complaint was filed with the California Horse Racing Board to look into the matter.

Quite the discussion over there on PR. With the hoo-ha all over the social media, it is getting harder to stay away from it. Sad for all, but mostly for the horses who stand a chance of being the collateral damage in future rescue attempts. Trying to stay neutral, I hope it gets resolved soon.
Ann NC
Slice and dice journalism.
Sad for all parties involved.
Needs to be resolved, like yesterday put these assertions in another venue, not the court room of, PR.

Ashton,
Maybe this unusual display is welcoming El Vino and all the horses we have lost
in such a short time. This year’s has begun with such sadness.
May all who have crossed the rainbow bridge run free and be at peace!
Northern lights may make rare appearance in parts of U.S.
By Saba Hamedy Los Angeles Times January 9, 2014, 11:59 a.m.
A solar storm may cast colored lights – known as the Aurora Borealis or Northern lights – in the sky over parts of the northern Plains, the Great Lakes region and Northeast on Thursday and Friday, forecasters say.
“It’s a very rare occurrence,” Joe Kunches of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo., told the Los Angeles Times.

Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sheena, I agree, no sense of humour. They likely take everything too seriously, especially themselves and their self-importance to racing, as opposed to Moosie’s.
Max
Sheena. I’ve done it already and will keep this up until they ban me. I’m appalled. It would be different if the Moose posed a threat to the safety of the other horses. A suspension would have been enough. The independent spirit of the Moose is alive in the ROTW. Let the Moose run.

Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Just checking in to say how sorry I am about all the beautiful horses we lost in the last couple of weeks. Laughing, Sunshine Forever, Patton, Etc, and lastly El Vino whom we thought was safely retired and enjoying his new life. I guess they are never 100% safe at least he had a couple of relaxing years, just being a horse.
Now we can look forward to the new babies being born, Shack’s being the first and now Stay Thirsty’s first baby has arrived. One by one they will fill the gaps, but never replace those we have lost. Soon we’ll all be pacing for Zennys new baby, filled with excitment and anticipation. Life goes on.
I’m hoping the stars have aligned and this being the Chinese Year of the Horse, that we will have a Triple Crown Winner again.
Love you Mama Zen and sweet baby, and kisses to the boys, and a kiss to my beloved Indy, too.

Sheena. Moosie’s fans have indeed grown incredibly. Good for him. Moose people in the UK, Europe and the ROTW bow to no one. You’ve got my support on everything to with your splendid horses. One would think that authority types would have better things to do than ending the career of a national horse hero. Life can be a bore and sad too sometimes without the likes of Moosie to cheer us all up. Let the Moose run.

JudyB. Thank you very much. I was thinking of Oxbow the other day. I love him, as does carol and others. He’s like the horse in the Wizard of Oz. We’re never quite sure what is the color of his coat.
carol in arkansas
hi Max….you are right about the color thing…he looks a darker in this photo than in real life….up close he is gray-ish red-ish brown-ish…but first thought always was he is gray….time will tell on him…
Max
Carol. No one can understand this, but the Jockey Club says he’s a bay. Neither of his parents are gray, so Ox should not have this color. But there it is. Even Lukas saw him as a gray/roan, and he was up close daily. Like you say, we’ll see.

Dear Max:
As soon as I saw his photo with the article, I thought of you. He’s a very handsome boy. Love and Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max and Carol:
I was checking Oxbow’s ancestors and there are at least three grays; Native Dancer and farther back, Geisha and Mah Mahal. Who knows maybe some of those genes account for his coat color. I guess it’s possible. He is beautiful. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. It’s strange too because both Oxbow and Paynter have basically the same genetic background as offspring of the same father and full sisters to Tiznow. Paynter however does not have that coat. I love that family. Apparently Tiz runs his barn. He taps on his stall door with his hooves and shakes his head for food and pepper mints. I also read that he had figured out how to open the door and he walks around the barn showing the other horses who is in charge.

January 10 Cherokee Devotional
When something in our minds rings a bell that warns us, we do well to listen. What is it that wants to lure us away from the chosen path? Is it not from the good side? Then, run like a rabbit! Every one of us has a sounding board, a testing place that detects the way we are moving. Like a compass, it points the right way-and we are foolish not to understand-gohlga. To ignore the impressions that are within us is like trying to go through a door, but refusing to use the doorknob. It is one thing to be dense and another to be willfully determined to get lost in the wilderness. Listen to the alarm system. It is there for a good reason-and later on we won’t have to say that something told us not to go a certain way and we didn’t listen.
He hears voices others do not hear; sees visions that confirm his dreams.

Dear Dumplings–there has been a horrible crash at Freehold Raceway in NJ, a harness racing venue. It seems a car slid into the horses. Sheena. Fans think that the Moose is moving in with Kauto to start dancing! Here is a picture of the Fly on Kauto’s website. The Fly might be checking around to see if he can get a bite on the Moose. Dear Max Yes the Fly looks superb I just hope the March winds. don’t dry up the land too much, the Fly prefers softer going I am wondering which race Willie will chose for Annie Power, maybe take on Big Bucks very unlikely she’d run against Quevega in the Mares or the Fly in the Champion Hurdle. Such choices!!Hugs Sheena

Sheena. Mullins is being very circumspect about Annie’s next move. Agree that he will not jeopardize wins by Quevega or The Fly. Liked The Fly’s mane in that photo. It’s the layered look.
