Zenny, you roll so well, just like everything else you do. Love you Big Beautiful Girl. 13Z is such a striking young man. Thank you for the info and pictures Team Z and Lanes End, and for continually thinking of us, Z’s fans, who can never get enough of her and her kin. Christmas blessings to all.

I would really really like to see a side view of Z13 to see his conformation. It is hard to tell much about him in 3/4 views

I have a question about Hollywood Park. This took place many years ago. Actually l997. Could someone shed more light on this. i would love to know more. They were talking aboutit on TVG tonight but I didn’t get all of it.
The Sharp Cat “Walkover” (She was a beautiful horse) well she had to be , Dad was Storm Cat. She ran all by herself just her and her jockey. They said she was only the 33 horse I believe in history that had did it. They said Whirlaway had did it at Belmont Park.
What’s this all about. Was anyone on here there? Terry Crow any info. This was pretty neat.
I’ve been reading up on her and she died after delivering an A P Indy Foal. In 2008 I believe. So wish she had lived longer.
carol in arkansas
The “Bid” also had a famous walkover….in the Woodward?(have to check that)…no one would run against him…so he ran by himself…does not happen often…lots of lower level races get cancelled if not enough entries…seems like “walkovers” would only happen in higher level races..ones that would not be cancelled due to low turn out…this is just speculation…if anyone has more info…please help us out here…also, I have not heard of a “walkover” happening recently…any info on when the last one occurred?

Does anyone know anything about Rocky Barboa and Bob Consultation? They both fell after the turn for home in Race 1 today at Hollywood Park. Jockeys are not seriously injured apparently. All they said on TVG was that Bob Consultation got up and that Rocky Barboa was vanned off. That IS Barboa, not Balboa. I didn’t see it happen, fortunately — was looking away from the TV at the time. I am afraid that Rocky may be gone. Please let me know of the condition of both of these horses.
Thanks and Hugs

According to the Forum side on the Horse injuries thread, Rocky Barboa didn’t survive.

Thanks for the update. I was afraid that might be the case. So very sad.

New trends and new ideas interest all of us, but how we do love the familiar. We like to keep the things dear to us, the old songs, the familiar places, the good faces. Yet most of us have no desire to go back and recapture the old times-we have invested too much in what counts for us now.
At times, however, we get tired of bending toward the future. When something familiar comes to our ears or a certain fragrance touches our memory, then we recall a part of us that remains in the past. It’s important to savor the familiar in the past, because sometimes that helps us to appreciate what we have today.
For it must be known that each man has his own peculiar song, and that he cannot sing that belonging to his comrade without this offering him an insult.

Thanks Kathy. I think this is why the old Christmas carols are played over and over again – they bring back those familiar times, places, and people. I go to a yearly concert put on by the Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus, and one of the many great things about the current director of choruses, Robert Porco, is that he doesn’t try to “fix” something that isn’t broken. He knows why everyone comes and what they want to hear. I can hardly wait to go again (probably for about the 35th time).

Dear Max Guess what? The Moose refused got a huge cheer as he cantered past the crowd, Am sure he was missing Sam who’s had a double at Aintree.Sire de Grugy won is a very good horse Moosie’s twitter followers are rising!!Thanks for telling me about Her Majesty, had missed that SS won horse of the year and Treve outstanding filly and mare. Kauto’s docu on tomorrow, he’s pleading for a DVD now. I wonder hat the Moose will have to say tonight!!! hugs Sheena

Sheena. Moose has reversed the norms in racing. He’s a hero for standing still. You are right. His twitter followers are rising.
Sam did well. Baby had not raced in 959 days and he’s 13. To come so close to a win after such a lay off is darn incredible.
Terry Crow
One thing about his behavior–You can safely eliminate him from any consideration as far as the betting is concerned.

Sheena, Ann NC and all devoted Moosie fans. Here is the video of Moosie’s run.
The wiley Moosester technically did not refuse, but pulled himself up before the first fence, thereby getting around the rules that count refusals against a horse. Nice shots of his batman hood. Moose is one of a kind.

Thanks for letting us see the exciting race Max (despite Moosie’s reluctance to participate). I don’t think I will ever get used to seeing horses run AND jump in the same race. Moosie says he doesn’t know how to explain what happened.

Z-sters, here are reposts of the birthday poems for Dawn from 2011 and 2012, in reverse order.
A Birthday Poem for Dawn Conrad
(December 7, 2012)
We Dumplings all were so glad
To personally meet up
With the one and only Dawn Conrad
At the 2012 Breeders’ Cup–
What a memorable treat
To be able her to greet!
She’s as friendly as could be,
Just as we from her posts her had conceived!
The hugs she gave and received
Could not have been stronger–
If only our encounter had lasted longer!
We fervently hope she’ll be back again
The next Breeders’ Cup
To attend
When at Santa Anita they’ll call
“Riders up!”
And the swiftest horses
Of all
The championships will contend
On both turf and dirt courses
And the crowds will wildly cheer!
Now permit me please here to append
My tribute to Dawn from the previous year,
Which I will slightly amend.
*************************************
A Birthday Poem for Dawn Conrad
December 7, 2011
The first horse Dawn did adore
Was a dark bay filly
For her bought
By none other
Than her big brother
In the days just before
He had to depart
For the Vietnam War–
He knew his little sis,
Who loved him silly,
Would in his absence be sore at heart,
And he sought
To give her fortitude.
Dawn, I bet,
Did hug and kiss him on the cheek
Many times that week
To show her love and gratitude—
His kindness she never did forget.
The filly, named Cinder, was all
Little Dawn could’ve wished for,
And much more.
Dawn had a ball
Every hour that she with Cinder spent.
They had a game,
Played always the same:
Whenever Dawn to the pasture went,
Cinder would instantly come
On the run,
Then stop on a dime
At the fence line
To receive the soft caress
Of her sweet mistress.
Many a year did pass,
And then came the day
When Dawn, that once little lass,
Now into a woman grown,
Fell in love with another dark bay,
This time one who lived far away
From Dawn’s Colorado home
And destined to be a great star,
For who has not heard a lotta
’Bout the great ZENYATTA?
Dawn followed all
Of Z’s brilliant racing career,
And then
In the fall
Of 2010,
She thanked God (and Dottie!) when
Z’s Diary blessedly came along.
Since then a year
Has come and gone–
If you remember,
’Twas early in November.
Z had already raced and won
Nineteen times
To the cheers
Of an ever-increasing throng–
Her racing days
Were nearly done
When Z did pen
The charming lines
Of Diary Entry One.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic of 2010
In just days would come,
And then
Z’s retirement would be at hand…
Her many fans did fear
That they’d seldom hear
Of Z in her broodmare years,
But on that first Diary day,
Z was already making plans
So she with those fans
In touch could stay
In a most novel way.
And thus it was
Before her last race was run
That this new form of fun
For Z and many a fan
Thankfully began.
Z’s diary with great fecundity
Soon did spawn
A society like no other,
With posts from fans offering both fun and profundity,
And one of the “founding mothers”
Was our dear Dawn!
Right from the start,
Dawn wrote from her heart
And found the words to say
What we ALL with ardent zeal
Did inside us feel
’Bout Z’s magical way,
But which we others
Lacked the means to convey.
Dawn, our writer extraordinaire,
Beautifully expressed
In eloquent prose
How Z, that most incredible mare,
With magnetic personality
And other-worldly quality
Us all so impressed
That love for her inevitably
In every breast
Arose.
Thus ’twas no surprise
That Dawn to the occasion did rise
When Zenyatta, inspired by March Madness,
Did on her Diary propose
A writing contest
Meant to end her fans’ sadness
And dry the tears that in their eyes
Had quelled up
When Z’s first foal had failed to develop.
Each of us did don
Our thinking cap
To see if perhap’
We could come upon
Words suited to win the prize.
We tried our best
In our own words to suggest
The true measure of Z
And do honor to the Queen.
When the Final Four were drawn
And the texts were by us seen,
We judged each sender
To be
A worthy contender
To win Nina Kaiser’s Z,
Number nineteen.
Then we each got to voice
Our personal choice,
And it was DAWN
Who by a landslide
Won the prize
For which so many had vied.
In this I hope she took pride—
Surely, it brought joyful tears to her eyes!
When her prize arrived,
Dawn a photo did share
Of herself with that bronze
Of the beloved mare.
Z danced as if before a race,
And we could see Dawn
With her sweet smiling face
Framed by a smooth coif
In soft shades of fawn.
To the worthy winner, we our hats did doff!
As summer approached,
Since she’d known some cancer travail,
Dawn thought herself to avail
Of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale.
There she the doctors consulted
And with them broached
Follow-up care.
We all said a prayer
It would go well for her there—
And I believe it indeed so resulted.
Leaving there the first week of June,
She very soon
Arrived at SoCal’s Hollywood Park.
Team Z her there did greet,
And Dawn got to see
Where Z first had made her mark.
She Z’s half-sister E
Did also there meet
And Dawn
Delighted to see her graze
On what in former days
Had been Z’s favorite lawn.
Now the Dumplings all hope Dawn will be back
For the Breeders’ Cup
And that at The Derby together we’ll sup!

Dearest Zenyatta. “Why are you special to me?” Is it the stately stature of the Queen like carriage? Is it the glistening brown coat with the diamond dapples? Maybe it is the dance or those still moments with your head held high? Is it your intelligence and fathomless brown eyes? Was it your first run free or perhaps a camera-ride on the back of Pegasus? Is it posters in the stands, a warm crowd on a cold Kentucky night, the excitement you bought back to racing? Your place in its history and future, the Breeders Cup, 60 Minutes, Horse of the Year, Vox Populi Award? A Fred Stone portrait, Jamie Corum lithograph, Nina Kaiser bronze? The cheers I shouted the tears I shed? Certainly your beauty, power, grace, breathe taking speed, final kick, heart stopping finishes and 19/1. Absolutely your gut wrenching, never give up, try! It is all of this, yet more. It isn’t only who you are, but what you mean to each of us. With Team Z, you are Jerry and Ann’s pride and joy, John’s soul mate and patient masterpiece, Dottie’s muse and she your voice. Mike’s talent, guidance and prayers brought you home safe each race. At Barn 55, you had care from Mario, workouts with Steve, walks with Carmen, loving star struck visitors and kisses from all. At Lane’s End, paddock pals, peppermints, pears and precious motherhood. Your family embodies the word generosity and together you have been transformative. You give pure happiness to thousands. You are a horseman’s ideal, a child’s dream, a friend to charities, a moment of healing to someone ill, a smile in the face of sadness, a sweet memory to all those you meet and a wish of all those that you haven’t “including myself”. While totally unique, I see in you the memories of my youth: the Black Stallion, Flicka, Secretariat and my Cinder (a gift from a brother leaving for Vietman), live again. There were endless summer days of best friends, bareback rides, Breyer’s horses on the bedroom shelves and glorious Triple Crown winners. With you, I am that horse loving girl again. What fun! I have my own challenges in life, as everyone does. While I seek to remain positive there are those moments. You are there to lift my spirits and touch my soul. Your diary is a place of remarkable civility where information, support and all things Zenyatta are shared and celebrated. Facebook, over 70,000 and still counting! The experience has been once in a lifetime and continues to be a magical ride. In the end my love cannot be fully explained, it is simply heart felt and joyful. It is no mystery why the word “angel” is used to describe you, for you are a creation of God, a blessing to us all and a remarkable gift. For everything you are and everything you mean, Zenny, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are truly UNBELIEVEABLE! As always, sweet dreams. Hugs and kisses. XXXOOO

Sheena. Very bad karma from that guy. Others are right about the Moosester when they applaud and cheer for him. Moose makes racing interesting. What’s so wrong with some fun?
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max Surely the BHA wont put an end to Moosie’s career!!!!They wont find one more popular silly …….!!!!hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Moose has done a lot to spark interest in British racing both flat and jumps. Hope that his connections can deal with this. It’s not like Moosie is all alone in his eccentricity. He’s got plenty of company in that department. Are they going to ban all of those horses too? On this side of the Atlantic, Hastings used to bite other horses on the track and he still won the Belmont. No one banned him. He was also grand sire to Man ‘o War. Let Moose run free!

Dear Sheena and Max:
Would be a mistake to retire Moosie. His fans will riot.
Hope they will allow him to continue and maybe they should allow Nigel to ring his bell again. Maybe Moosie will get used to that at the start as a signal to go. Love and Hugs, JB

Barbara W., my husband was watching the Texas Universary football game and said it had to be cold there!!! Thats unusual, isn’t it! What is going on with this weather? I seem to the late to the party on this one – don’t know how the new post got by me, but thanks to Vicki for the “heads up” on the old one. Wonderful pictures as always. Somehow a horse on its back always just amazes me (well, that and the fact that they can actually get up afterwards!). Thanks again and again to Alys and the rest of Team Z and everyone at Lane’s End for their wonderful care of our little horse family and for allowing us to continue to be part of it. Will be interested to see what creative ideas peeps have had for the stickers as mine is still waiting for inspiration. Hope it’s warmer where you all are than it is here. We’re headed for the coldest December in ages. Last evening’s wet snow froze overnight when the temperature took a nose dive so it is beyond removable – yuck!

Dear Max Life would be so boring if we didn’t have these wonderful characters in our lives.I, for one, would very much miss Moose’s antics on the racecourse. Paul had a 5 timer today at Sandown and Aintree,Sam rides for him quite often now.hugs Sheena
Max
Sheena. Totally agree. Moose is a mystery, but an interesting one. Shirlee is right. He’s just too smart. He’s cheeky too like Hovis. Racing needs more characters like these guys. We love these horses whether they win or not. Let Moose run, or not.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Sheena and Max, having read all your Moosie posts, what occurred to me was the famous closing line from John Milton’s poem: “They also serve who only stand and wait.” And Mad Moose certainly does that well.
Of course Milton was dealing with the fact that he’d gone completely blind, while Moosie is dealing with … well, his personality, or Moosie hasn’t told us what, yet. But Milton’s poetic line is commonly taken to mean, “We all have a place in this world and we all perform a function, regardless of our ability or disability” — and Moosie very much does that.
The poem is also taken as a poem of encouragement, saying to those who feel themselves useless because of some personal impediment, “There is a job for you — in time it will reveal itself to you. Until then, trust and be patient.” Hopefully, the BHA will see the wisdom of those words, as well.
Max
VickiB. Well said. Milton might appeal to the BHA. I can see Moosie quoting the great poet.

Wonderful post, Vicki! High hoof!
Max
Sheena. Just read in the English press that Sam has been suspended by the BHA for two races for excessive use of the whip on Baby Run.
BHA will also consider Moosie’s behavior. Moose might face suspension as they are reviewing his past refusals. Not certain but the rules may limit refusals to 3 and the horse gets a suspension on 4. Moose might need his horse psychologist to argue for him. This last race was listed in some results as a pull up by the Moose, not a refusal. I say – give Moose a chance.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max and Moosie Fans:
I second that. Love and Hugs, JB
Terry Crow
I agree with giving him a chance. However, what about the folks who bet money on these braces? Some compromise needs to be made.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear TC GP:
That’s true. Maybe the powers that be will refund wagers if Moosie continues to refuse to run. Don’t know if they would consider. Hugs, JB
Max
TC and JudyB. There are no sure things in racing, as you know. Moose has won in the past, and he could well do it again. He is actually a first class racer on jumps and the flat. He just has his own mind about what he does. His fans bet on him and don’t care if he runs or not. They love the guy.
