As you know, 12 Zenyatta was successfully weaned on August 14.
Three days before, he and mom, along with their paddock mates, moved to the barn and paddock where they had lived when he was a foal. The mares spent three nights there with their colts—familiar surroundings for all!
On the third morning, after breakfast, Charles calmly explained what was to happen while 12Z listened attentively. Zenyatta continued to eat. All understood and were completely relaxed. Then, Mom and the two other mares were led back to the barn and paddock they know as home.
Shortly thereafter, 12Z and pals were turned out and were soon grazing and playing together. Back in their paddock, Zenyatta and her friends were happily grazing as well.
Their human friends, the amazing Lane’s End staff, continue to monitor them, and all reports are good! Yay!
We’ll keep you informed and updated.

Lane’s End you are such a Special place. Thank you for including us. I am learning so much from all of you and my Z Family. What I learn I share with my 5th Graders.
I can’t imagine Zenyatta and Baby Z any other place. God Bless Lane’s End : )

AWESOME LANES END, YOU REALLY ARE A PREMIER BREEDING OPERATION.
LOVE THE STORY OF CHARLES TALKING TO 12 Z AND LETTING HIM KNOW WHAT
WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.
MOTHER NATURE GOT THE COLT READY AND LANES END MADE A SUPERB
MOVE IS MAKEING THE SEPARATION SEEM SO VERY NATURAL TO MOM’S AND THEIR SON’S.
HORSES ARE NOT HUMANS AND THEY DO NOT HAVE HUMAN FEELINGS; THEIR FOALS NO MATTER WHAT SEX MOVE ON TO BECOME INDEPENDENT AT A MUCH YOUNGER AGE THAN THE HUMANS. MARES AND FOALS SURVIVE AND GO ON TO BE HEALTHY PRODUCTIVE HORSES.
ZENYATTA DID A SUPERB JOB IN “RAISING” 12 Z AND HELPING HIM LEARN HIS LESSONS. HE SEEMED TO LEARN THEM AS WELL AS SHE ALWAYS LEARNED HER LESSONS WITH ATTENTIVENESS AND ENTHUSIASM.
THANKS SO MUCH LANES END FOR SHARING THE NEXT CHAPTER IN ZENYATTA’S AND 12 Z’S LIFE.
CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THAT “GREY TAPIT FILLY” (IN HOPES) !!!

Sign. Well said. Z did her usual fabulous job, and young 12Z learned his lessons like a professional. Whoever now has the job of dealing with that little group of feisty colts will have some stories to tell.

Oh yes, Max,
And I am sure they will be fiesty, where is the gelding. Maybe they will use the teaser ???? HA HA !!!

Thank You Lane’s End for the update! Thank you for the new photos of them both!!

Sounds like Lanes End put a lot of thought into the weaning process. Was glad to hear that the Mosses were with them and that the separation went so seamlessly. Zenyatta and Baby Z are definitely intelligent horses, so giving them an explanation of what was to happen was brilliant.
Thank you Lanes End for also taking the time to explain the weaning in detail to Zenyatta’s fans. We know that you folks are professionals, but Zenyatta is so dear to all of us.
Job well done in deed.

Wow,
You guys put the “pro” in professional!! Such a smooth transition for both mom and son (can’t call him baby anymore), I’m sure there were a few nickers to each other, but this scene looks so serene and peaceful…….the transition has been made! Thank you so much, it still amazes me that with all you have to do each day, you take some time to keep us in their life. We can’t thank you and the Mosses enough. Zenny looks like a beautiful broodmare in full bloom…….gorgeous! Kisses on all noses from Auntie Sue

So happy all went well. Thank you for letting us know how it went. You are the absolute best. No wonder the Moss’s trust you with The Queen. Hoping that since Zenyatta is now is on “vacation” from mother hood she could start her diary again. Wink wink!

Z ordered the BC line of products. She wants to see what that has to offer.
Z has time to develop her own line now…Fit For a Queen!!!
The Queen can tend to her own hair now,no more spikey doos for the boys. Took up way too much time!
I still say, LUCARNO needs to tag along, for protection, on BA Tuesdays.

My story of the Cruel and Evil Redneck living behind my instructor’s barn. (This is only the individual. This honorary club is wonderful and kind. He couldn’t hold a candle to this club.)
I was riding at my flat barn today, and I was on Chance, rather than Red, since Chance can jump to some degree. He’s is still very green, but he can clear jumps very cleanly and tries hard. So right as we were getting ready to take the jump, we hear gunfire. Chance doesn’t even flinch, but just to be safe, my instructor called off jumping. She yells across the patch of forest seperating her from the neighbor. All we wanted was an hour of quiet so we could get the jumping in. Apparently, either the neighbor didn’t hear her, or he blatantly ignored her, and continued shooting. This isn’t the first time we ran into a scuffle with this particular neighbor. He tends to visit the people who own land adjacent to SHERR often. One day, the director of Safe Haven had to go and ask them to stop firing because the bullets were wizzing by people in the barn! They get there, and find them drunk, shooting guns at targets, which, when missed, resulted in bullets going toward the barn. Whether it was intentional or not, it was stupid. They have ancient cannons, old rifles, and an AK-47 in those woods behind the barn. However, what he does in his personal life is none of my business. But, when he hurts horses because of ignorance, that’s when I don’t agree. He, at one point, had a lady horse. We didn’t know her age or name, so that’s what we called her. She would get loose and go flirt with Red and co. before going up to the other barn (effectionately called the “Old Man Retirement Home” since that is where the retirees go) to flirt with the older horses. The man would always have to go get her from the barn and lead her back. Well, the story goes that one day, she had the misfortune of getting a stick stuck in her eye. She returned to her owner on her own, and his solution was to pull the stick out, and apply saline onto it, rather than do the smart thing and take her to a vet for proper treatement that would have eventually healed her eye up; even if it didn’t restore eyesight to the eye, it was worth her life. Poor girl was walking around with a saline filled hole in her eye, and was locked away so no one would see her. Well, one day my instructor got a call from her veterinarian (who told her this entire story, who, in turn, told me) about the lady horse. Animal Control had been called out to the owner’s “farm” and he had been summoned to go with them. They get to the house, and the yard is covered with junk and old car parts. They go to the back, and there are gun shells, targets stroon about, and random things galore. Now, this man has two girls and a son. None of them did anything for this horse either. They finally get to the horse. I must warn you, if you have an active imagination, but not the stomach to match it, do not read what I am about to write. Anyway, they find Lady in the back. The infection has engulfed her entire eye and the socket, and is in her brain now. He found maggots in her eye, and guess what, more saline. She had suffered for months, and his solution was to lather on the saline! NO medical help, NO vet visit. NOTHING. She was humainly euthanized on the spot. It was the kindest thing we could do for her. She was out of her misery, and away from that spawn of Satan. He, nor his family, had anything to say when the charges came. I miss that plucky little lady. I never knew what had happened to her until today. But, with that said, I’m glad that she is now pain-free, and running around with Hootie, the Greats, and all the other horses in that big, lush pasture in Heaven. She deserves nothing less.
I do not judge by color; I do not judge by lifestyle; I do not judge by income. I judge by character. And this man does not deserve to even be treated with sincerity, much less have the privalege to by treated as a human being, because he is not. He is a monster, and a heartless one at that. He isn’t a “man”; he is a boy, unable to resolve personal issues without injuring or hurting innocent creatures. Did he do this because she ran away? Did he do this to spite us? We will never know, and honestly, I don’t want to know. I am afraid to know what goes on in a mind as cruel and evil as his. There is a special place for him. And it’s no-where near Lady, now peaceful in Heaven. It’s in the other direction.
I’m off to cry for her, but at the same time, pray to God and thank him for taking her from that monster. Lady is happy, and one day, I’ll see her again.
Pati- So So
* Not months, she suffered for weeks. Mind thinking ahead of fingers again.

This individual does not deserve to be called a man, much less a redneck. Real rednecks are for the most part the salt of the earth and people you would like to know. I am not quite sure just what justice would be in this case. Perhaps an eye for an eye?
Pati- So So
Hamurabi’s code? (sp?)
Terry Crow GP
Seems appropriate in this and so many other cases. You are correct with your reference.
Max
TerryC. Is it not a distinguishing feature of the redneck that he or she has respect for animals especially horses? I am not so certain about skunks, but you have the expertise in this area.
Terry Crow GP
You are correct, Max. Rednecks are kinda like the last group that you can make fun of without incurring somone’s wrath. For the most part, they are as you have described them. I don’t know about skunks, but if any group has their welfare in mind it is us rednecks. Don’t know about the dead ones in the middle of the road, though.
Pati- So So
I was not making fun of rednecks in anyway. This is just how he has labeled himself. I apologize if I insulted someone!
Terry Crow GP
Pati-No one is upset with you. It’s just that guys like this deserve punishment and I would think that the ideal punishment would be to drop him into a group of real rednecks who know this story. Before and after pictures would be appropriate.

Thanks to Lane’s End and all involved in the weaning process! We are all so happy and grateful to LE for the update. Again, thank you for keeping us in the know!
Charles, you are the best for taking the time to explain to 12Z what the procedure was, and of course, for caring so much!
@Pati,
So sorry for the awful thing that happened to your friend, the Lady horse next door to SHERR. There is no punishment severe enough for this jerk (jerk is the nicest word I could use for this vile human with his worthless, heartless spawn) — at least this is my opinion. You are correct about her not being in pain and misery now. She is running free and happy and is where she can be in the light and loved. This whole incident is so unfair and tragically avoidable. RIP Sweet Lady filly.
Take care of yourself, Pati.

Have a question I have read a lot of posts about a filly, did the Moss’s purchase a filly? Or did one of their others have a filly that they are planing on keeping? Do we know who her parents are? And how old she is?
Sorry for all the questions, but who better to ask then all of you

Diana Stuart - Lots of Ponies
The Mosses own a lot of broodmares, and also buy a few horses at the sales every year, so the filly was from one of their other LE-based broodmares. I too would love to know who the mom is. I’d love to have a complete list. I’ve figured out a pretty long one from back-tracking on Equibase, but it would be fun to follow the rest of the family, I’m just sayin’

Happy to hear the weaning went so well, and mom and baby are doing so well! LOVE the pic’s, so cute! And I’m VERY surprised 12Z was such a good listener when Charles was giving out his instructions. he seems so feisty, free spirited, independent, and of coarse head strong, that he would maybe do his “own thing”! Our Queen taught him and prepared him well for whats ahead in his next exciting journey into becoming a “Big Boy”! i am so proud of both of them! And to LE and the Moss’s you are ALL extraordinary people, I hope you will continue to keep us posted on Mother and Son! The love and respect with have for these two horse is indescribable!

Expected nothing less from the amazing Zenyatta , Moss’s and Lane’s End. Class act on all accounts. Zenyatta just takes everything in stride. I love that Charles explained what was going to happen to 12Z. How wonderful is that. When I met Dottie in KY, I told her how much we loved it that she spoke Zenyatta. Her comment was , she is easy to understand and communicate with because she is so smart.
They cycle of life must go on. Soon our precious boy will have a sibling and the cycle will continue.
Have a wonderful week end and love hugs and kisses to all

Rags to Riches Delivers Colt

Champion Rags to Riches, winner of the 2007 Belmont Stakes (gr. I), delivered a Henrythenavigator colt March 17 in Ireland.
Rags to Riches is scheduled to be bred to Galileo, who stands at John Magnier and partners’ Coolmore Stud in Ireland. Henrythenavigator stands at Ashford Stud, a division of Coolmore, near Versailles, Ky.
Rags to Riches, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2007, became the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont Stakes when she bested eventual Horse of the Year Curlin by a head.
Out of Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, Rags to Riches is a half-sister to 2006 Belmont Stakes winner Jazil , 2008 Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) winner Casino Drive, and 2009 Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Man of Iron .
