Our recent trip to Lane’s End was filled with lots of excitement, including the pleasure of being able to help present a donation to the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. The donation came from the sale of one of Zenyatta’s halters by Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. If you would like to join Zenyatta and Rood & Riddle by making a donation to the Red Cross’s disaster relief fund, click here.
Here is the story from Rood & Riddle:
April 2, 2012, Lexington, Kentucky –A recent eBay auction of a halter worn by 2010 Horse of the Year and legendary race mare Zenyatta brought a final bid of $6,712.50 in a fundraising effort for the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. Zenyatta, along with owners Jerry and Ann Moss, and Rood & Riddle veterinarian Dr. Debbie Spike-Pierce, presented the check from the sale of her halter to the Red Cross at Lane’s End Farm on Monday.
“It’s a great tribute to her, and to racing fans to come up with this size of a check,” said Jerry Moss.
After fees, the Rood & Riddle Foundation was able to donate $6,478.84. Jerry and Ann Moss also made a generous personal contribution to the disaster relief fund.
“She’s always been so generous with all the people, dancing for them, and showing up for them … it’s nice that she can still contribute. As you can see, she really enjoys it,” agreed Ann Moss.
Zenyatta was famous in her days on the racetrack for her 17 consecutive victories in graded stakes events, including 13 grade one races, which inspired a legion of devoted fans the world over. Since her retirement in 2010, the mare has resided at Lane’s End Farm outside Lexington, where she gave birth to her first foal, a colt by Bernardini, on March 8.
Dr. Spike-Pierce purchased Zenyatta’s halter in 2011 at a fundraising event on behalf of the Foundation, which chose to put it up for auction for the Red Cross after a line of severe storms and tornadoes tore through Kentucky in early March, destroying homes and farms, killing 21 residents.
“I guess you could be surprised [about the price it brought], but with it being Zenyatta and the absolute superstar she was on the racetrack, I wasn’t,” said Spike-Pierce. “We’re so excited to be able to give the money to areas that were so devastatingly hit. We’re excited we could be part of all this … and that Zenyatta could be too.”
Red Cross director of development Winn Stephens says the organization is thrilled to accept the donation, particularly given its unique origins.
“It’s been really amazing for us, because we’re providing services to Kentuckians, and this fundraiser is an only-in-Kentucky kind of thing,” said Stephens.
The money will go to the Red Cross’s disaster relief fund, which is used after natural disasters for both immediate needs like getting supplies to first-responders and individuals, and long-term needs such as financial aid to victims, cleaning materials and other supplies.

Zenyatta and the Mosses,
Thank you for being a big part of this fund-raising event. Zenyatta is near and dear to the hearts of countless fans hence this generous response. You inspire us to be kind and giving to both humans and animals.

WONDERFUL video Karen!!!!! I was so mad that I forgot to go back to calracing.com to watch this race, but that coverage would have “paled in comparison” to THIS! You were at all of the right places – I felt like I was THERE! Loved all of the pre-race and post-race footage as well as being on the “finish line!” JAG was so cute with her poster! Looks like a good time was had by all. Does Santa Anita now require that the horses walk twice around the walking ring before heading to the track or was this special? It was kind of poetic that Mike won his 5,000th on the same horse that he won a Breeder’s Cup race on.
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
Terry, every weekend I have been there, when they have BIG races, they do this. I don’t know how long this has been going on, but it seems it is up to paddock judge Ken Goldberg most likely.
Terry Crow
Thanks, Karen. Just seemed odd to me, but I certainly can see that it gives the crowd around the walking ring more time to see their favorites.
Raylene_SoCal
Thank you so much Karen for taking that video. Great job! It seemed like you caught it all. I do not know how you were in all those places at the right time. You must have been running. And that was great with Judy and her sign.
I was there in the morning and checked the paddock for any dumplings before I left and I did not see any. I should have stayed, but the crowd scared me away. I certainly would have stayed if the Queen was there. You could BET money on that!! I am also a huge Angels fan so I wanted to see the game on TV. I did catch the Derby on TV. Great Race and Great Win. I did bet on I’ll have another.
I do miss this blog also. The forum is just to overwhelming for me that is why you have not seen me around much. To much to read for a person reading it at work, and no internet at home. I love the blog. So easy to connect with everyone.
Thanks again Karen for video!!!
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
Whereyabin?? Was wondering where you were hiding! LOL! Haven’t seen you since Baby Shower GF! Yes, you should have stayed – the crowd wasn’t really so bad – just stick with us dumplings and you’ll be as ‘crasay’ as the rest of us! LOL! Thank you though, it takes knowing the track inside and out! LOL, but even after all the years going to SA, I still don’t know it all! The place is so huge!! Just my spots mainly to shoot video and photos. It is pretty easy to get around once you’ve been there a few times. And it is beautiful!
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
Oh, and yes, I have been crazy about Baseball since I was a kid too! A huge Angels fans since day one! My Dad would take me to their games at Dodger Stadium when they shared it with the Angels and got free passes from his customers. Didn’t hurt that when the then Washington Senators were in town to play the Angels, their manager at the time, Mickey Vernon, was a World War 2 buddy of his! …. and when I think Long Beach, my home town, ALMOST got the Angels I can just cry over that till this day!!!
Terry Crow
Karen-That is fantastic that your dad knew Mickey Vernon. The Angels played their first year at old Wrigley Field where the PCL Angels played before they moved to Dodger Stadium in 1962 while the Big A was being built. The Angels played mostly during the day while the Dodgers played at night. I was sports editor of my college newspaper at the time and the Angels sent me a pass that enabled me to sit anywhere that wasn’t occupied. I would go out and watch the day games since the crowds weren’t much. Jim Fregosi, Albie Pearson, Billy Moran, Leon Wagner, I haven’t thought of these guys in years. Even the old PCL hero, Steve Bilko, was on the team. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
Terry, we never made it to old Wrigley Field, but oh, yes, Dodger Stadium! My first recollection of their games I attended were there, but we could have gone to Wrigley too, and I don’t remember. And yes, Albie Pearson was my favorite, thanks for recalling those days. As I recall, my Dad and Mickey would spend most of the game talking of their time together during the war – as a kid I didn’t pay much attention, I was focused on the game! I wish I had now though! – Mickey would be standing right on the top of the dugout step first base side, in the corner talking to my Dad. Mickey didn’t appear to be too interested in the game when we were there! LOL! It was too bad that he managed in Washington, and after those days of seeing him at Angel games, they lost touch over the years. And yes, in those days, one could sit anywhere you wanted after the game started! Just find empty seats and you were blessed! We always sat first row over the dugout when WS were in town so they could talk and laugh about old times. He was a very nice, kind man. (My Dad and Mickey served under General Westmoreland during WW 11 – I remember he and Mickey having coinversations about him as well! LOL! Westmoreland was not a General then!)
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
Terry, I recall that during the war in Vietnam, when Westmoreland was in charge of the war, my Dad used to cuss about that! Apparently, he did not feel we would win the war with him in charge! So I can only imagine what he and Mickey talked about of Old Ironsides, as he called him! And the curse words never stopped when he heard of Westmoreland on TV and the battles going on in that war! As with most WW II vets, he never shared with any of us about the war. I often regret that he didn’t, he must of had stories to tell indeed! Some I am sure were horrific and he couldn’t talk of them – unless with a war buddy!
Terry Crow
Karen-This is great stuff. My dad was at the D-Day landing but never talked about it. I wish i could have been a part of those conversations. There are not too many WW II vets left, and it is a crime that more is not being done for them and their families. Old Wrigley Field was at 42nd and Avalon, been gone since the end of the 61 season. Used to go there to see the old PCL Angels when Chuck Connors played first base for them. Connors was good enough to play in the major leagues, in fact did with the Chicago Cubs. IN those days, a player could make more playing for a minor league team if he was a big enough draw and Connors was. It was also convenient for him to be in LA since his film career was just starting. His big break was in a film named South Sea Woman, which starred Burt Lancaster. Connors was also one of the very few to play two sports at the highest level, having been a player with the Boston Celtics in the NBA along with playing for the Cubs. He was a great guy, would stick around as along as anyone wanted an autograph. I also occasionally went to Gilmore Field, where the Hollywood Stars played. It was near the old Farmer’s Market and was torn down to make room for CBS television. You can see what it looked like if you ever catch a film called The Stratton Story starring James Stewart about a real ball player who had a devastating injury. Gilmore Field was the setting for the climatic game at the end. Didn’t mean to go on and bore everybody, but to a little boy these were precious memories.
Karen Gogue / L♥ve m♥mma and b♥by!
Terry
Precious memories indeed! I wish I could recall more of them too! Baseball and horse racing were my Dads favorites – he would have a ball game on TV and have the radio on at the same time listening to games, or CBS and Harry Hensen, Gill Stratton on with the races – all while reading the newspaper!!
My Dad too was at Iwo Jima, and I have some of his very gruesome photos of its aftermath – I don’t blame him for not talking about it. Brutal!
I barely remember Chuck Connors playing, at the time we went to Dodger Stadium, he had finished his baseball career and was on his way to becoming a major star.
Terry Crow
Well, you were just a baby then.

It was really nice seeing the Queen and the little tyke!, how he has grown. I was begining to worry that no more pics of Zenny and the Prince would be posted any more as I religiously login everyday searching for something. I just wish we had the BLOG back. If we promise to be good, would they relent. This is tough. Long Live the Queen. She is always such a class act, see how she was not distracted and took her job seriously, it was only when she was done with the job at hand did she join Prince and attend to the job of being a mom.
So Proud of the Queen who is the hardest working Queen ever!, raising her little tyke, raising money and all the other stuff she has to attend to. Dottie taught her well, not just to multi task, but to be a good mom.! Way to go. Love you always and forever big mama.!!!!!!!!!!

A Birthday Poem for Rosemary McCauley
(April 10, 2012)
Our dear Rosemary is one
Who grew up having fun
And getting her kicks
Riding horseback.
Such indeed was her knack
That you ringside
Could sit
At shows
And rodeos
And watch her trick ride
When she was just SIX!
As onward years sped,
She met a trainer of Thoroughbreds.
One thing to another led,
And soon they had wed.
As a young bride,
Rosemary before dawn would rise
And their horses ride
Counterclockwise
Round the track
For morning exercise,
And afternoons she to the farm went back
For a related enterprise—
Namely the yearlings to “break”
To train potentially for graded stakes.
Their time the couple did divide
Between So Cal tracks and Turf Paradise.
Rosemary did ride
So well
And at horsemanship so excel
That Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham
Her the compliment did pay
To say
What a GREAT horsewoman
Was she, our Rosemary!
But her resumé’s not yet complete:
This elite
Athlete
Did also compete
In hunter/jumper and dressage—
What a great feat!
As for humor, we know
That she—like our dear Terry Crow—
Is fond of redneck jokes
Many of which she’s cared to share
With her own “redneck” folks.
She also us did tell
How recently
She rode Z
On the LA Zoo carousel!
Now she’s strictly a So Cal gal,
And if you should chance to be
In this locale
And a lady see
In a truck with plates that “Znyataa” read,
Take heed—
It could be your opportunity
Our dear Rosemary
To greet!
Happy birthday, dear Rosemary, and many, many more!
Rosemary McCauley So. Cal.

High Hoof to EVERYONE involved with the “Zenny halter proceeds donation” and thanks so much for the video. I commented previously when Zeta posted the link, but it’s worth saying again – he is SOOOOO cute and Zen is obviously being a great mom (and SHE looks wonderful too!). Can anyone tell me about the somewhat strange appearance of little SM12’s midsection? It looks like maybe he had been shaved or something. You can see it as he comes into the shot from the right along the fence. Hope he’s OK!
@Sue Noel – So sorry about the death of your dear horse Casey and very best wishes for your “new” Barnaby. I wasn’t sure how to find him on Marlene’s website so maybe you will give us some pictures on the Forum side.

Sandy, I asked the same question about a picture I saw of Rachel Alexandra’s colt. I was told that its where they draw blood for tests. It like to have scared me to death. I felt as ease when the (much more knowedgable blogger assured me it was for the test they do on all the foals at a certain age . like a DNA I guess or they check to make sure his atibodies or something to that effect are where they’re supposed to be. To make a long story short. It is for his own benefit. Hope this helps.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
I remember that discussion about RA’s colt, and that was a small patch on his neck. This is more like a wide band around his entire midsection (?????)
Eveline / Maryland.
That kind of looks like they did an ultra sound of his lungs, maybe to see if he had pneumonia. Of course this is only a guess, since I don’t work at Lane’s End, but that would be the most logic explanation.

This is very sad news about an important member of the Z community, Judy Berube.
I was worried that something was wrong because Judy posts nearly every day. Her posts are always interesting and full of love and good cheer. I miss her. You’re right, Max. I was very surprised. But now it makes sense, since Judy has been missing here for a few days, and it didn’t feel right. I hope Judy has the support she needs. It’s always hard losing someone that close. She really liked to tell Terry how she would read his jokes to Russ, and make him laugh. So it felt like Russ was a part of this place, too, through her.
Max
Vicki B. Judy did often say that Russ laughed at Terry’s jokes. It makes you smile to think that Terry brought such happiness to Russ. I worry about Judy and hope that she is okay, as much as anyone can be in grief. She will need time to deal with this loss, but we do so miss her daily hugs. Thinking of you, dear Judy.
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
I agree Max. Yet, although grieving is unavoidable, and painful, I am not worried about Judy, in the sense that she doesn’t seem like someone who would isolate herself (beyond what she might need right now). Even though I hardly know her, that doesn’t seem like her. And I would think Russ would want her to be happy, when she can, and that knowing that, would be a comfort. I always worry more about those whose sadness makes them only want to retreat, as time goes by.

Heard from Judy B last night;
She does have a wonderful
Supportive family and friends.
Her sister is her best friend.
She misses Russ so very much
Right Now, they were together for a
Very long time.
She said she won’t be writing for awhile.
Continuing our thoughts prayers candles
Videos and jokes will be a wonderful tribute
To her and Russ.

Sign. Thank you very much for this welcome news of Judy. I hope that she will get lots of comfort at this time. If you talk to her again or hear from her, please tell her how much that we are thinking of her and sending our support and sympathy her way. I really miss her posts and hope that she will be back again with us very soon. I understand however that she needs some time.

Keta, hope you have a wonderful time. We had hotel reservations, but we cancelled them when hubby started getting this persistent infection. Would have loved to meet you.
