Happy Friday!
We are proud to announce that, as of today, Zenyatta is confirmed thirty-seven days in foal.
She was bred earlier this year to the Claiborne Farm stallion War Front. Zenyatta was examined by Dr. Holder this week, and checks out to be happily in foal and in excellent health!
Wishing sunny weather and a happy Father’s Day everyone this weekend!

Secretariat. ; )

Linda, I don’t know how the pedigrees would be but the only one worthy of her would be Secretariat.

Sorry that Mr. B. didn’t make it. Lent–and by Pulpit. Could that be a Claiborne horse? They tend to use one word names on theirs.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Shirlee:
Lent is owned and bred by Janis Whitham. Pulpit’s Dam’s name was Preach. So Pulpit was a clever choice by Claiborne Farn when they named him and I guess Ms. Whitham stayed with the religious theme when she named Lent. Love and Hugs, JB

Might be worth noting that Lent is a half brother to another winner on the same card, Fort Larned…

Zenny, Congratulations on the news that you are in foal again! War Front must be a super guy for the Mosses and Dottie to have you mate with him. So much excitement surrounds you these days with the hopes of many resting on your colts.

Deana in Texas
Great news. I researched this colt and his progeny and it appears Team Z has made another terrific choice. I feel that I must address questions about breeding Z too much, etc. The Moss’ Iove Z immensely and would never compromise her health for $$…period! If they felt for any reason that her well being was in jeopardy, they would make changes. Z is the type of horse that you can clearly tell she is happy being a Mom and teaching her foals daily. I think now she would miss having a little one around, just like at 1st she missed racing-and she loved that, too. Horses like a sense of purpose, consistently, and people who love them. Z has all of these things and more! She is everyone’s beloved Queen, especially the Moss’.
LeslieA
Thank you, Deana for your post. That’s what I tried to say earlier. From what I’ve read here, it would actually be WORSE for Z NOT to be pregnant. She obviously LOVES being a Mom and does it just as well or better than she did on the racetrack. NO WAY would
the Mosses EVER compromise her in ANY way. When we try to be “armchair quarterbacks,” we are just that.
SusanL
So very true !!!
She will come up barren when her body says no more foals !!!

It was Fort Larned all the way in the Stephen Foster Handicap over favorite Take Charge Indy. “Fort Larned flashes his usual early speed…The lead extends to five lengths now… He went clear at the start, he was clear down the back, and he’s coming home turning handsprings! Fort Larned, brilliant in the Stephen Foster Handicap!”
Fort Larned wins by seven or eight lengths. Our Darlene Daniels will be so happy! High hoof, Fort Larned!

Terry McNamee
I actually like this third mating much better than the first two. War Front looks like a great choice! With her pedigree, Zenyatta has lots of different opportunities for breeding. I hope the Mosses avoid A.P. Indy next time too, since there are so many A.P. Indy horses everywhere right now, and her first two colts are by A.P. Indy-line stallions.
Maybe they can find a stallion with one of the more endangered sire lines to help preserve the diversity in the breed — like the Man O’War line (Tiznow is one) or the Domino line (like Include — he is from a wonderful old American bloodline that must be saved). Sometimes a stallion from a less popular line is less successful at stud, not because of his own quality, but because he doesn’t attract the best mares. Who better to help preserve the old lines than people like the Mosses, and what better mare to use for this than Zenyatta, with her pedigree, race record and lovely temperament?
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Very interesting, Terry. Thanks for sharing.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Much as I love Tiznow, I think the Mosses would avoid him, as he is a big horse, and Zenny is huge. They are trying to balance that with a somewhat smaller stallion. She’s already having huge babies.
Sue Fredrick Happy as a lark
Terry,
Interesting comment. However, before you discount the first two breedings, that being CoZ and Z13, maybe we ought to see what they do once they hit the track. Dottie and crew study pedigrees and unless you’re an expert I think they know better what they are doing.
Terry McNamee
I don’t discount the first two breedings at all. They were excellent. I just personally prefer the third one simply because North America is overloaded with A.P. Indy blood right now. Since there are now two Z colts by A.P. Indy stallions, I hope at least some of her future foals are from different sire lines, as is the one she is carrying now. I agree, Tiznow is too big, but there could be others, such as Tiznow sons or brothers, or other Man O’War line stallions, that would suit. If influential people like the Mosses demonstrate a willingness to bring back some of the old bloodlines for the good of the breed as a whole, maybe others will, too.
SusanL
Tiznow is much too large boned and muscled for Z,
Pedigree is important but so are so many other
variables like size etc…..
LauraJ (Cincinnati, OH)
Other than sentiment, there is no particular value in trying to preserve a sire line over any other line. Pretty much all TBs go back to all three foundation sires. The only thing that gets passed down intact through the sire line is the Y chromosome, and it functions to control spermatogenesis and make the horse a boy. It contains no genes related to performance and none necessary for life or health. All other genes from the sire can be inherited and passed through female offspring as well as male. Man O’War, for example, figures in the ancestry of numerous Throughbreds including Zenyatta herself. It’s just that his genes have been passed most often through one or more female intermediaries, but they’re still the same genes.
Trina Nagele in So Cal
Thank you, Laura, we can always depend on you for valuable information succinctly put. Hugz.
Terry Crow
LauraJ’s horsey knowledge is indeed impressive.
Terry McNamee
If that is the case, and everything important comes from the mares, why bother keeping records of stallion lines? And why do some sires stamp their offspring regardless of what mares they are bred to? Sorry LauraJ, as a former dog breeder, I have to disagree with you. Tail female and tail male lines do tend to have more influence in a pedigree. Diversity and reduced inbreeding also are necessary to keep a breed healthy, and right now the Thoroughbred (especially in North America) has an overabundance of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector. Zenyatta’s pedigree gives her lots of different breeding options.
Michelle Cross
Frankel or Galileo would be my picks for a date with Z. I heard her sister Balance was bred to Frankel this year.
Terry McNamee
Frankel could be the next A.P. Indy if his progeny prove to be good. He is already fully booked for the next three years! Both Galileo or Frankel are at stud in Europe, and I doubt that the Mosses will ship their beloved mare. A Sunday Silence stallion might be an interesting choice, or how about Lonhro?

Kobe’s Back won first time out and in a stakes race at that. This two year-old is one to watch. Auctioned as a yearling for $60,000 and sold as a 2 year-old in training for $480,000.
Slow to break, he came from behind navigated his way through pack to win going away. So like Zenyatta. Exciting! BRAVO, KOBE’S BACK! You have two new fans.

People here have mentioned Frankel since Balance was bred to him this year. I just checked on True Nicks and “Bullet Train” is a A++ match with our Z. She would not have to travel to England to get the same bloodlines at Frankel! Both out of Kind and BT is by Saddlers Wells. He is standing at stud in KY!!! My other wish is for her to go to Afleet Alex who is also another A++. I just love this little guy with a HUGE HEART…

Ales, Afleet Alex would be my hope for her too. His courage and fight coupled with hers should make for an exciting horse.
