LEGENDARY MARE ZENYATTA TO BE HONORED FOR ALL-TIME WITH LIFE-SIZED STATUE IN SANTA ANITA’S PADDOCK GARDENS AREA, UNVEILING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 29
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2012)—The legendary Zenyatta, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita and Horse of the Year in 2010, will be honored for all-time by Santa Anita Park as a life-sized statue of the great mare will be unveiled in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area on the first Saturday of Santa Anita’s upcoming Autumn Meet, on Sept. 29.
Additionally, the inaugural Grade I, $250,000 Zenyatta Stakes (formerly the Lady’s Secret), a race won by Zenyatta over three consecutive years from 2008 through 2010, will be run on Sept. 29.
Zenyatta, who at the age of eight is currently enjoying her role as a broodmare at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, will be joining two of the greatest horses of all-time, John Henry and Seabiscuit, as her statuary likeness will now join these legends of the American Turf adjacent to the track’s grandstand.
Named after The Police’s blockbuster album “Zenyatta Mondatta,” Zenyatta is owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Moss and his wife, Ann.
“Like the song written by Sting and performed by The Police, everything Zenyatta did here will always be magic for the entire Thoroughbred industry,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “Her win against the boys in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic is considered by many to be the greatest moment in Santa Anita history.”
The incomparable Zenyatta retired with a remarkable 19 wins from 20 career starts and $7,304,580 in earnings. Although she was defeated by a head in her final start, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, her stature as one of the sport’s all-time greats remained undiminished as she was voted the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year for 2010.
“The breadth of her accomplishments at Santa Anita alone is astonishing,” said Haines. “She won a total of seven races here, all stakes and six of them were in Grade I competition. Her story will forever resonate with our fans and we know we’ll have many thousands of people coming here over the years to admire her statue, which will be situated on south side of the Kingsbury Fountain, directly across from John Henry.”
Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden in her final 17 starts by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, Zenyatta made her third career start on Jan. 13, 2008, winning Santa Anita’s Grade II El Encino Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths under David Flores.
As was the case in her 2009 Classic victory, all nineteen of Zenyatta’s wins came in last-to-first fashion.
After winning the El Encino, Zenyatta’s subsequent Grade I wins at The Great Race Place came in the 2008 & ’09 Lady’s Secret Stakes, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and the 2010 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap.
“We’d again like to thank the Mosses for running Zenyatta here and we look forward to welcoming them back as we again honor ‘the big mare’ on Sept. 29,” said Haines.
Sculpted by Nina Kaiser, who also created the statue of John Henry, Zenyatta’s likeness stands at her height of 17.2 hands, and weighs 1,200 pounds, which is approximately what Zenyatta weighed throughout her racing career. Commissioned by Santa Anita, the world-renowned Kaiser worked on the project for more than two years.
Santa Anita’s 2012 Autumn Meet gets underway on Friday, Sept. 28. For more information or to make dining and seating reservations, fans are encouraged to visit www.santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

This is great news to hear. That is soo cool that they put a life-size statue of Zenny in the paddock at Santa Anita because that is where the majority of her races that she won were run.
Terry Crow GP
Sharon-agree completely. Yes, she was stabled at Hollywood Park, but that facility will not stand the test of time like SA will.

Dear Sheena,
Your National Hunt season is so very special.
I rode in a couple of Fox Hunts, they are formal
Dress but very informal if the makes sense. To
Have hunting recognized is so very special and
A great honor to win.
Hope Cornwall is an isolated case. Interesting information
On Camelot. Maybe he won’t bounce and surprise
Us all !!!

Sheena is referring to the jumping or steeplechase season. The Grand National is a jump race. Kauto Star is a jumper. Frankel is a flat racer. There are no fox hunts in the UK. They have been illegal in Scotland since 2002 and in England and Wales since 2005.
Terry Crow GP
As in National Velvet.

Do love National Velvet, TC. Not sure she was a steeplechase participant,
though.

Soory Max,
They do avidly fox hunt in the UK. I have quite a few friend from the
US that go over there to fox hunt with their UK friends.
Terry Crow GP
The big race in Narional Velvet was the Grand National, Elizabeth Taylor riding a horse called The Pie.l
Max
TerryC. You have a fantastic memory about horses. Love your posts.
Patricia/Far northern CA
… and in the original book, “The Pie” was so named because he was a “piebald” color— what would in the US have been called at that time a pinto. I also seem to recall that if a horse was a black and white he was called a “piebald” no matter what the breed. There are a few Clydesdales and/or Shires that are piebalds and are sought as drum horses for the miltary bands. Big, imposing, stoic in temperaments, and big enough to carry two huge kettle drums— and be ridden with reins connected to the rider’s TOES [because he needs both hands for the drumsticks!].
I was actually quite disappointed in the movie of National Velvet after having read the book— so much was changed… but the horsey scenes were pretty good as I recall. Photography anyway. Haven’t seen it in ?15+ years.
But then, that’s Hollywood, look what they did to poor War Admiral…
BTW they still do fox hunt in the UK, but now they have to be accompanied by a fellow with a shotgun who blows the fox to smithereens [how utterly humane, eh?] at the end of the hunt if the dogs corner it. (Just so the DOGS don’t get it!) In actuality most foxes escape or are able to den up— and the guy just blasts his shotgun in the air to signify end of that particular run.
Fox hunting is more than just cornering and killing a fox… it’s a social and physical event; and it is also a favor to the local farmers whose small livestock is decimated by foxes. And many farmers are members of their local hunt. Can’t remember the resources at this moment but there was a good program on it about 6-8 months ago on ?RFDTV? which showed and explained a lot. It’s an old country sport and activity with real practical aspects… not exactly the brutal killing ground portrayed by people who really know nothing about it. I have a number of friends who are or were participants for many years… we’ve had some long chats about it… so I’m not writing from total ignorance. And if I have offended anyone, I’m sorry…
They do a lot of galloping and jumping and milling about, and more galloping and jumping… and a field hunter is a tough, strong, enduring horse— or pony… many youngsters still take part. And the fox usually wins.

OMG, this is such G R E A T news about our boy Paynter !!!!! What a true champion he is!!! He certainly deserves the Vox Popoli award as the peoples horse this year. I will continue to pray for his complete recovery. God Bless him and his wonderful, caring owners the Zayats.
Also pray the news is as good for Money and Traveller and any other sick equines out there. I am going thru some trials myself with my cocker Cisco. He has been having trouble seeing, eyes seem cloudy, so I rushed him to the vet. She did a complete blood panel, and everything looked great, no diabetes etc, so my next stop is the Madison Vet Hosp for glaucoma testing. Please say a prayer for my Cisco that it is something that can be arrested with medication, I would greatly appreciate it. Hugs to all and kisses on my Queen’s and Prince’s noses.

Oh my, the Madison Vet Hospital is so GREAT! When my kitty was getting up in years, and having some issues, I credit them with giving me more years with him. We rented a van, so Kiddy would be confortable, and took off on a road trip. Sadly, I did lose him some years later to colon cancer and I miss my baby every day. Amazing how our dogs and cats can take our hearts and own them! Good luck with your baby!

A few redneck jokes for the day. You might be a redneck if the only scales in your bathroom are leftovers from the fish cleaning. You might be a redneck if you wore curlers to your wedding so you would look good at the reception. You might be a redneck if you wear a cowboy har that is three sizes too big. You might be a redneck if the morning after your kids’ slumber party the dogs have fleas. You might be a redneck if your favorite movies are 9 1/2 teeth and Three Brides for Seven Brothers. Topped off by a golden oldie-You might be a redneck if you go to a party and the punch bowl flushes.

Glad you enjoyed the video of IHA. He does look great.
I went to see Papa Charlie today. He’s doing great. Angela and I signed the Adoption Contract and he is officially Angela’s. She said she brought him in last night for his supper and grooming and after he ate his food he proceeded to roll, legs straight up in the air. He’s so funny. I have to ask her to try to get a photo of that the next time he does it. He is gaining weight; eating a lot of grass, carrots and mints. He is a very happy horse. Will keep posting on his progress. Sue— Am praying for your Cisco. Glaucoma is a nasty thing. Back in the early 70s I had a young Flat-Coated Retriever who developed glaucoma (vet felt it was from a blow during doggy play with her housemate) at the age of 5 months. My vet (remember, this was nearly 40 years ago, much may have changed since then) recommended removing the one eye because if not she felt the glaucoma would move to the other eye eventually. So we did, and she got along just fine — we just had to make sure WE compensated for her slight loss of depth perception etc.
In later years I had an old Dobe mix whose eyes gradually went from cataracts (they weren’t doing lasers yet, dogs or not) and as long as he was within the area he knew well, he did just fine, negotiated steps, furniture, trees, etc. He was about 13 when this developed and when other things began to fail then I had to let him go. But it was not because of the blindness.
So don’t give up hope, Cisco CAN have a life after… if it comes to that. And he has you….

Wood winner Gemologist retired
Posted on October 4, 2012 by Jennie Rees
A press release issued on behalf of WinStar Farm:
Leading 3-year-old Gemologist, winner of this year’s Wood Memorial (G1), has been retired and will enter stud at WinStar Farm for the 2013 breeding season.
The son of Tiznow encountered a minor setback in his training last month and was sent to the Versailles-based farm for rehab. After it was determined he wouldn’t make it back to any big races on the remainder of the 2012 racing calendar, the decision was made for him to retire.
Gemologist, who retires with 5 wins from 7 starts and earnings of $794,855, hails from the multiple stakes-producing Mr. Prospector mare, Crystal Shard. He joins fellow Grade 1 winners Bodemeister and Take Charge Indy as future WinStar stallions from a vintage 2012 crop of 3-year-olds. A stud fee for Gemologist – and all other WinStar stallions – will be announced at a later date.

Keta, Thank you for all of your informative posts especially the updates about Paynter.
I am a racing fan but never really followed racing owners, trainers etc. until Zenyatta. I take it that this is an unusual year, that so many 3 yr olds are retired for one reason or another. Is this rare or is it gradually happening more? Just have to wonder, so many young horses didn’t even have a 3 year career!
So fortunate for Zenyatta that she was delivered into the care of wonderful people all around her.
