LEGENDARY MARE ZENYATTA TO BE HONORED FOR ALL-TIME WITH LIFE-SIZED STATUE IN SANTA ANITA’S PADDOCK GARDENS AREA, UNVEILING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 29
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2012)—The legendary Zenyatta, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita and Horse of the Year in 2010, will be honored for all-time by Santa Anita Park as a life-sized statue of the great mare will be unveiled in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area on the first Saturday of Santa Anita’s upcoming Autumn Meet, on Sept. 29.
Additionally, the inaugural Grade I, $250,000 Zenyatta Stakes (formerly the Lady’s Secret), a race won by Zenyatta over three consecutive years from 2008 through 2010, will be run on Sept. 29.
Zenyatta, who at the age of eight is currently enjoying her role as a broodmare at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, will be joining two of the greatest horses of all-time, John Henry and Seabiscuit, as her statuary likeness will now join these legends of the American Turf adjacent to the track’s grandstand.
Named after The Police’s blockbuster album “Zenyatta Mondatta,” Zenyatta is owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Moss and his wife, Ann.
“Like the song written by Sting and performed by The Police, everything Zenyatta did here will always be magic for the entire Thoroughbred industry,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “Her win against the boys in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic is considered by many to be the greatest moment in Santa Anita history.”
The incomparable Zenyatta retired with a remarkable 19 wins from 20 career starts and $7,304,580 in earnings. Although she was defeated by a head in her final start, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, her stature as one of the sport’s all-time greats remained undiminished as she was voted the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year for 2010.
“The breadth of her accomplishments at Santa Anita alone is astonishing,” said Haines. “She won a total of seven races here, all stakes and six of them were in Grade I competition. Her story will forever resonate with our fans and we know we’ll have many thousands of people coming here over the years to admire her statue, which will be situated on south side of the Kingsbury Fountain, directly across from John Henry.”
Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden in her final 17 starts by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, Zenyatta made her third career start on Jan. 13, 2008, winning Santa Anita’s Grade II El Encino Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths under David Flores.
As was the case in her 2009 Classic victory, all nineteen of Zenyatta’s wins came in last-to-first fashion.
After winning the El Encino, Zenyatta’s subsequent Grade I wins at The Great Race Place came in the 2008 & ’09 Lady’s Secret Stakes, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and the 2010 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap.
“We’d again like to thank the Mosses for running Zenyatta here and we look forward to welcoming them back as we again honor ‘the big mare’ on Sept. 29,” said Haines.
Sculpted by Nina Kaiser, who also created the statue of John Henry, Zenyatta’s likeness stands at her height of 17.2 hands, and weighs 1,200 pounds, which is approximately what Zenyatta weighed throughout her racing career. Commissioned by Santa Anita, the world-renowned Kaiser worked on the project for more than two years.
Santa Anita’s 2012 Autumn Meet gets underway on Friday, Sept. 28. For more information or to make dining and seating reservations, fans are encouraged to visit www.santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

Just finished reading all the great posts. Had a week of computer problems. I am sure anyone at Santa Anita found it very emotional to watch Zenyatta’s statue being unveiled. I loved the video from Lane’s End showing Z and the prince.
What better way than have Love and Pride win the Zenyatta.
So sad to hear Snow Fairy will not be coming here, but wishing her a full recovery.
Royal Delta’s win was just wonderful to watch. It’s Tricky gave her best and I still love her too.
@ Karen Gogue
What a wonderful thing you did for Dottie. She did so much for us by posting the diaries, which I still miss.
A big Thank-you to the wonderful people at Lane’s End who take such care of Zenny and 12Z, Without your blog we all would be lost. Looking forward to more post and pictures of Z and 12Z.

Karen Gogue, I just read your account of Dottie and the scrapbooks. How wonderful! I’m sure she was quite surprised. Thank you so much for everything that you did. Dear Judy B,
The articles from bloodhorse are posted on page 1 and 2 of this blog.
They came out Saturday. She was training and they found some heat in her lower leg, not where she was injured before but to try and get her ready
for the Arc would be too short of a time to recover and train. They decided
to rest her for 2012 and bring her back next year. At the time of the articles
they did not have a specific diagnosis.
Maybe they could bring her over to the BC to head some sort of parade they could create for her ??? That sure would be fun.

judy berube from Rhode Island
Hugs, JB

JudyB. Danedream is reportedly fine. There is one horse only who has tested positive so far. The 3 month quarantine is a precaution to contain any spread of the disease to other areas. Unfortunately Danedream will not be able to leave the stable and track during that period, and so will miss racing in the Arc. Orfevre is now the favorite to win.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Thank you for the info on Danedream. Your reasoning on why The Prince looks into the camera cracked me up. Too funny. Hugs, JB

JudyB. Danedream is in Germany. Snow’s in England. They found some heat in Snow’s tendon. As a precaution they are putting her away for the season. It is reported that her owner will bring her back next year. Snow seems to be improving with age. In her last outing, she broke the track record against colts. Z would be proud of Snow.

That trip with Nelly, must have really set his mood and mind on racing and her of course,
Thanks for the update Kathy R.
Kathy R.
Sign: Jakkalberry is down for the first time – he has been purchased by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock group – they are one of many who are now into buying overseas horses for the express purpose of winning a Melbourne Cup. Because money plays such a huge part in racing, most owners want quick returns and so the trend has been for two year olds. We used to get a lot of our staying types from New Zealand, but because of this quick buck trend the Kiwis are finding it difficult to sell such horses. Hence the rush to Europe, where, because of the strength of the Aussie dollar buyers have been able to get a good horse very cheaply. I understand that the Europeans have now worked that one out and are adjusting the prices accordingly! It’s a shame though, because the must win race in Australia is the Melbourne Cup – but because of shortsightedness here, people will just have to accept it’s now very much an international race. And I just love some of the internationals!
signofthetimes; President of Texas RN Chapter
Jakkalberry is such a talent and a real world traveler, travel does not
bother him. He can win on any continent. Sooo hope his new
owner’s are happy with him. Thanks for the explaination of the ins and
outs of racing down under. Guess we all have our own “politics” and
the almighty $$$ speaks on all continents.
Not sure if you read my comment about Zenny, The Mosses spent
huge huge amounts of money on her when she was racing, they said that
she had 15 people a day touch or work with her and there was an all night guard and they had web cam of her stall in their home. Now the cost to keep her and her foals at Lanes End must also be pricey and the money the spend on this site and to keep the fans connected to ourselves and to Zenny is just phenomenal. We are sooo lucky they are very wealthy and very generous and kind. They are very special people and not
many people would have the $$$$ to do what they are doing for us, Zenny and her foal (soon to be foals).

Dear Max,
Do you think there just getting cold feet facing Orfevre????Oh gosh, I don’t know. You know I saw him winning some of his very good races last year. The triple crown etc. When he’s on his A Game that horse is just over the top good. Explosive.
I could be wrong but I have been just had a good feeling about him lately.
It’s funny I went in to work this morning and I work with a British Girl one of the first things I asked her was how far France was ahead of us in time. I had forgotten. Lots of our customers call her Brit. I keep her up on whats going on.
She’s the one I placed a bet on Zenny for at the 2010 Breeder Cup. For her and me. She had always heard me talk about Zenny and wanted me to place a bet for her. Well you know I told you I had been listening to a lot of people talking that day. I heard these guy in particular tallking about Blame they were talking about how awsome he looked that day and I knew he had won at Churchill Downs. So I though OH My Gosh, I have lost Chris’s money (Our Brit ) So I went and placed the bet on Blame. Anyway who knew…………………….She thought that was just so cool that we made money that day.Sorry for my ramblingbut that was a lot of fun that day.
Anyway I so desperately hope TVG or Someone will Air that race here.
Do you know if we will be able to get it here???????

Danedream Likely Out Of Arc (Keta Note: And, Breeder’s Cup)
By Matt Gardner on Oct 1, 9:05p
According to a report in the Racing Post, defending champion Danedream will likely miss the chance to defend her title due to a disease outbreak in Cologne
According to a report by the Racing Post UK, defending Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream is for all intents and purposes out of this year’s Arc. The cause of her defection isn’t an injury to her or a decision to run in different race. Instead, the Arc winner will not be able to travel to France due to an outbreak of an equine disease known commonly as “swamp fever” at the training center where Danedream is stabled.
From the Racing Post UK:
All horses stabled around the German course – their number is thought to be in the region of 350 and 400 – were placed in lockdown on Monday night as crisis meetings took place to discuss a travel ban that would prevent Danedream leaving Cologne.
The quarantine will not only keep Danedream out of the Arc but also the Breeders’ Cup Turf. According to that same report from the Racing Post, horses will likely be restricted from leaving Cologne “for months”.

THE LASTEST ON DANEDREAM, 4 HOURS AGO.
“Danedream, winner of last year’s Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, might not be able to contest this year’s running Oct. 7 because of an outbreak of a serious equine disease in Cologne, Germany. A horse at the same racing center as the 4-year-old filly tested positive for equine infectious anemia, also known as swamp fever, according to the Racing Post. Danedream is trained by Peter Schiergen.
All horses stabled around the German course were placed in lockdown the night of Oct. 1.
Patrick Barbe, spokesman for Danedream’s part owner Teruya Yoshida, told the Post: “The horse that tested positive was stabled far away from Danedream and is not one of Peter Schiergen’s horses. It was only one positive test, and that horse has been removed from the area, but the stables in and around the racecourse have had to be quarantined. Danedream is in perfect health, cantering well and eating well, and is not involved at all in this, but we must abide by the decision of the German authorities. In my opinion her prospects of traveling are only very small, but we are awaiting official news from the authorities.”
Danedream, whose other co-owner is Gestut Burg Eberstein, is likely to be tested for EIA again in the next couple of days.
The outbreak has created havoc for bookmakers. According to the Post, Betfair suspended its Arc market while several bookmakers removed Danedream from their betting.
One firm to remove Danedream was William Hill, which will make Japanese runner Orfevre its new favorite at 3-1. Camelot, whose attempt to sweep the English Triple Crown ended with a loss in the Ladbrokes St. Leger Stakes Sept. 15, is the firm’s co-second-favorite at 4-1 with Nathaniel, runner-up to Danedream in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July.
Danedream was Germany’s 2011 Horse of the Year as well as a French and Italian champion last year.”

@Judy: No money for me this week either, we will do better next week! (fingers crossed)
@Keta: Thanks for all your updates on our special boy Paynter, much appreciated.
@Terry C: So nice of you to help Karen carry her heavy package/gift for Dottie, what a true gentlemen you are!
Prayers for all the horses who are fighting an illness, disease, or an injury, may God watch over them and may the Angels protect them. It certainly has been a rough year for our beloved TB’s , here’s hoping 2013 is a much better year for all the colts and filly’s.
Still hoping to find a rerun of the BIG event last Saturday, if anyone finds one, please post it for me! I will be forever grateful.

Girl Saratoga and Judy,
I am right there with you ladies, I love Eskenderya. I loved Alydar too and I do see a great deal of him in Eskenderya. So of course that is a very special connection along with Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Rahy, Storm Cat, Roberto, the list goes on and on. His pedigree reads like a who’s who of racing. I visit Eskenderya every year when I go out to Taylor Made. He is so impressive when you are next to him and has a wonderful personality. Amazing!

Dear Dawn:
So great to hear from you. Yes, I remember we both love Eskenderya, as does GirlSaratoga. How wonderful that you get to visit him. Hope your Mom is doing well. Hugs, JB

I don’t know. Karen should have warned me that it weighed as much as it did. Just kidding.

Dear Karen – An amazing day at Santa Anita with the unveiling of Zenyatta’s statue and your gift to Lady Dottie……. Sounds like a magical moment forever in time . The many we have shared with each other all due to one beautiful racehorse, our beloved Zenyatta.
Thank you for really putting it all together so beautifully.
See you soon at the Breeder’s Cup.
Dawn Conrad / Colorado
My dearest Karen,
Well you did it girlfriend, after months of hard work, dedication and inspiration, you put together a most beautiful tribute to our beloved Dottie!! The timing was perfect and your themes of “memories, dreams and life’s moments” so very fitting. She was and is such an important part of my life, as she is to so many others. How I looked forward to reading her amazing words on behalf of Zenyatta. Although she is still a part of our lives in many ways, her daily posts are truly missed! It would have been such an honor to be there in person, but I know we were all there in spirit. You’re wonderful description of that magical unveiling in front of Dottie is priceless. I can just picture your bright smiles and only slightly contained tears. John’s reaction sounds way “too cute”! As Dottie looks through the books and sees the pictures and heartfelt messages, I know they will bring her great joy! That is the most special thing of all. I am certainly looking forward to the video, pictures and continued stories about that very special day from those that shared it. How do we thank you for everything you have done? You have my undying love and appreciation in Dumplinghood!! I am so glad that you are feeling better, know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers. You are the best, dear heart!!!!
Hugs and kisses,
Dawn
Can’t wait to actually give you a hug in person at BC!

Prayer’s for Paynter, what a wonderful spirit he has!
Also for Tiago after his recent colic surgery. Shari V. and I got to see him when we visited Adena Springs at the end of June. He was having problems and ill at that time with intestinal troubles. He had to wear a muzzle as they were watching his diet very closely. I was so sad and worried for him.
How I hope for a full recovery for both of these beautiful horses.

Carol,
That post was just lovely and I feel the same way. Your posts are always very special. We need to write another story someday like we did about Lava Man and I’ll Have Another. That was fun. Hope everything goes smoothly with your move. Hugs to you.

Peggy (N). No word yet on whether the Arc will be broadcast live in the US. Authorites in Germany have confirmed that Danedream will not be given any dispensation to travel to Paris. She is out of the Arc. Camelot’s participation to be decided by tomorrow. Orfevre is favored.
