LEGENDARY MARE ZENYATTA TO BE HONORED FOR ALL-TIME WITH LIFE-SIZED STATUE IN SANTA ANITA’S PADDOCK GARDENS AREA, UNVEILING SET FOR SEPTEMBER 29
ARCADIA, Calif. (Sept. 14, 2012)—The legendary Zenyatta, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita and Horse of the Year in 2010, will be honored for all-time by Santa Anita Park as a life-sized statue of the great mare will be unveiled in Santa Anita’s Paddock Gardens area on the first Saturday of Santa Anita’s upcoming Autumn Meet, on Sept. 29.
Additionally, the inaugural Grade I, $250,000 Zenyatta Stakes (formerly the Lady’s Secret), a race won by Zenyatta over three consecutive years from 2008 through 2010, will be run on Sept. 29.
Zenyatta, who at the age of eight is currently enjoying her role as a broodmare at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, will be joining two of the greatest horses of all-time, John Henry and Seabiscuit, as her statuary likeness will now join these legends of the American Turf adjacent to the track’s grandstand.
Named after The Police’s blockbuster album “Zenyatta Mondatta,” Zenyatta is owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jerry Moss and his wife, Ann.
“Like the song written by Sting and performed by The Police, everything Zenyatta did here will always be magic for the entire Thoroughbred industry,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “Her win against the boys in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic is considered by many to be the greatest moment in Santa Anita history.”
The incomparable Zenyatta retired with a remarkable 19 wins from 20 career starts and $7,304,580 in earnings. Although she was defeated by a head in her final start, the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic, her stature as one of the sport’s all-time greats remained undiminished as she was voted the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year for 2010.
“The breadth of her accomplishments at Santa Anita alone is astonishing,” said Haines. “She won a total of seven races here, all stakes and six of them were in Grade I competition. Her story will forever resonate with our fans and we know we’ll have many thousands of people coming here over the years to admire her statue, which will be situated on south side of the Kingsbury Fountain, directly across from John Henry.”
Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden in her final 17 starts by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, Zenyatta made her third career start on Jan. 13, 2008, winning Santa Anita’s Grade II El Encino Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths under David Flores.
As was the case in her 2009 Classic victory, all nineteen of Zenyatta’s wins came in last-to-first fashion.
After winning the El Encino, Zenyatta’s subsequent Grade I wins at The Great Race Place came in the 2008 & ’09 Lady’s Secret Stakes, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, the 2009 Classic and the 2010 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap.
“We’d again like to thank the Mosses for running Zenyatta here and we look forward to welcoming them back as we again honor ‘the big mare’ on Sept. 29,” said Haines.
Sculpted by Nina Kaiser, who also created the statue of John Henry, Zenyatta’s likeness stands at her height of 17.2 hands, and weighs 1,200 pounds, which is approximately what Zenyatta weighed throughout her racing career. Commissioned by Santa Anita, the world-renowned Kaiser worked on the project for more than two years.
Santa Anita’s 2012 Autumn Meet gets underway on Friday, Sept. 28. For more information or to make dining and seating reservations, fans are encouraged to visit www.santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.

LOL! Yes, it is awful. At least you won’t be doing it in 103-degree heat like we did. Hard choices to make. What to keep? What to let go? Our new place, though lovely, is half the size of the old one.

Dear Sandy from NE Ohio,
The photos we were talking about were posted from Ed Dunlop’s training site in
the UK. They are of Snow Fairy and absolutely gorgeous. Max posted the one from her
“page” and I found the one on her twitter account. Both are on page 8, sorry for the confusion. John S took 12 Z’s first conformation photo, where he is looking at the camera. That is a NO NO for that type of photo, just joking about that.
HAVE YOU GOT THOSE PLAID PRADA OXFORDS !!!!! I AM EXPECTING TO SEE THEM
AND REMEMBER BEACHWOOD HAS A GREAT MALL AND OUTLET MALL.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
It was the reference to the photo of 12Z that I couldn’t track in the conversation, but Judy B helped out with an explanation and a guide to its location. I am totally unfamiliar with “conformation photos” or what is appropriate, but I now that I’ve gone back and looked, I think Max’s description is a real hoot.
On another note, there are no (as in NO) “outlets” at Beachwood Mall (or Chagrin Falls which is even worse). It is not far from me and is all VERY upscale stuff. So, they may actually have plaid Prada oxfords there, but I don’t think they will be making it onto my feet :-(

So glad you posted a detailed comment about the presentation to Dottie, Karen. We all wanted you to have the honor of revealing the details of the presentation since YOU poured your whole beautiful heart and soul into this labor of love for a year and a half! Bless you for the endless time and effort you put in to make this gift perfect, like Zenyatta herself, “one we’ll NEVER forget!” Many thanks for allowing us all to be part of it.
Dottie was as always an image of perfection, impeccable in her elegant outfit and heels! She stood (did I mention she was in heels?) in front of the table and slowly paged through the scrapbooks, taking her time. She was particularly delighted, bless her heart, when she came to the section where she could see the photos not of herself but of all the Z fans from the Diary! She said what a treat it was to be able to at last put a face to each familiar name, for although we all got to see pictures of her, she had never gotten to see us (her words). I always thought it was a stroke of sheer genius on Karen’s part to foresee that this would be a way to make the book(s) extra special for our dear Dottie. Thank you again, dearest Karen! By the way, love was beaming full force from your beautiful, radiant face.
The creator and singer of the Zenyatta song (“There was no telling/ What was to be/ The day that they sold/ Hip 703…” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pz2kvJf22gs ), Liza G. Fly, was at the unveiling. If you see video, she is the blond lady in the long-sleeved tan outfit. It was a treat to meet her and I was delighted to hear that she will be singing the Zenyatta song and some of her other songs at the BC Zenyatta party. Hoof ray!
Congratulations to Barbara Montanye and all the connections of Love and Pride, deserving winner of the inaugural Zenyatta Stakes! What a perfect name for the occasion! Congratulations too to second-place finisher Joyful Victory, whose name will forever be linked in my mind to our dear Kari Bussell.
It was a great pleasure to meet darling Zenyatta Dumpling Rosemary at the unveiling.
Vicki B, I wish we could have met you there too. Please let us know when you’ll be at Santa Anita—will you be there for BC?
Cynthia Holt, I wish we could have seen you, but you are always in our hearts.
Dawn, so nice to see your post!
Thank you again, Nina Kaiser, for the exquisite portrayal of the Queen, who will now reign over Santa Anita happily ever after, graciously greeting all who enter the gates of the Great Race Place!

Napravnik moving tack to KY for the fall
by Paulick Report Staff | 10.01.2012 | 9:51am
Jockey Rosie Napravnik will be moving her tack to Kentucky this week to ride at Keeneland and Churchill Downs this fall, according to an article at the Daily Racing Form.
Napravnik, who has ridden in New York for the past five months, will head to New Orleans on Thanksgiving, when the Fair Grounds opens their race meet. The 24-year-old jockey has been the leading rider at the Fair Grounds for the past two seasons.
“Ever since I got here it was a question of what I was going to do next and I always said it would depend on the business that I had and the horses that I was riding,” Napravnik told the Form after she rode Kauai Katie to victory in Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Matron at Belmont Park. “I just didn’t feel that I had strong enough business to go to Florida and it’s sort of hard to stay with the real good horses at Aqueduct.”

Happy Birthday dear sweetie! I must tell you that on my video of Dottie looking through the books, you just turned away from looking at the pages as Dottie turned to YOUR page of comments and photos! You missed seeing it by seconds! But no worry – you will see it once I have the video finished! (LOL! WHEN EVER that will be!)
Have a beautiful day!
