ZENYATTA WILL BE BRED TO TAPIT
Owners Jerry and Ann Moss announced today that ZENYATTA, the 2010 Horse of the Year, will be sent to Tapit to be bred in 2012. “ZENYATTA’s pedigree is a great match to the A.P. Indy sire line, and in choosing Tapit, we think this will be a dynamic mating. Her first mating was to Bernardini, a son of A.P. Indy, and we are thrilled with her colt.”
A grandson of Lane’s End’s two-time leading sire A.P. Indy, Tapit is by Pulpit and out of the stakes winner Tap Your Heels. Tapit, a Grade 1 winner, was third on the General Sire list last year and is currently ranked second on that list. He is the sire of three Breeders’ Cup winners in his first four crops, including last year’s champion juvenile colt Hansen. Tapit stands at Gainesway.
ZENYATTA is boarded at Mr. and Mrs. William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky. She foaled a colt by Bernardini on March 8 and the Mosses were at Lane’s End for the birth.

That picture brought the biggest smile to my face! Thanks team Z!

Hi Z family I am happy for Zenyatta. I am not real educated on this breeding stuff but I am learning. I remember Dawn talking about A.P. Indy. This sounds like a wonderful match. I hope all are well. It is beautiful today in Ohio. Thank you for the information about Omaha. We can always learn something from this site. Baby Z looks so cute. My class talks about him all the time. Zoe brought in a Baby Z model that is on my desk. We love Zenyatta and Baby Z, Mrs. Voltz and Homeroom 215

Cynthia-We have you as a role model.

I meant that in the most positive way possible. I have met Cynthia and would never think of painting the wring picture. In her case, the picture is most attractive.

That should be wrong picture. I better get out of here before I get into real trouble.

Love this picture. Just precious! Thank you for sharing. I have some questions if someone could answer for me. I’m not up on breeding although I would like to learn more about it. How often can the mares breed? How do they decide who to mate the mares too? Any information anyone could give me would be very much appreciated.
Thank you. Looking forward to seeing more pictures of Little Z and his momma.

wow – awesome news!! more excitement for the AP Indy line!! love it !! off to look for pictures of Tapit online

This is shameful. Seriously? What are you thinking? She just foaled. For goodness sake, you haven’t even named the foal yet! Please don’t tell me you are going to ruin our beautiful Zenyatta by turning her into a worn down breeding machine. I thought you were better than this and had more regard for Zenyatta. This is beyond the pale and so heartbreaking on so many levels. I am truly disappointed and disillusioned. I thought the handling and regard for Zenyatta was not just “business as usual”
but that apparently is not the case. Shameful.

You obviously know nothing on the subject…. Perhaps you should learn something before you start spewing accusations. =)
Mariah
I’m not one for accusing and insulting but I agree that it does seem a little too early. However, the people around Zenyatta love her very much and wouldn’t take a course of action if it resulted in the ruin of her well-being. These people have been in the profession for years, they know what they’re doing. there’s no need for concern I’m sure Zennyatta herself could tell you that =)

This is the nature of the business. This is how the “good” genes get passed on and the breed is made stronger. Mares are typically rebred around 9 days after foaling. Foals are weaned around 6 months and life continues. This is how Zenyatta, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed were each brought into this world. This does not hurt the mare. This is how nature designed them. Typically if mares are not rebred they have a difficult time conceiving in future breedings. We have found that if you keep them on a cycle then things progress much easier. Zenyatta’s body will tell all involved when it is time to quit. I can understand where you are coming from and understand that it may appear cruel but i assure you that it does not hurt her and that she is doing what nature intended her to do. Think of the wild horse herds and this may help.
Dmamaklock
Thank you for posting……yes, this is how it is, this is nature :-) Zenyatta is enhancing the breed.

Dear Beth:
Thank you for the information. I was surprised at first with the announcement but I know nothing about horses and breeding. As others have said – the Moss’ have been breeding for a long time. They love Zenyatta and they know what is best for her at this stage in her life. I wish them well. Marilu

Beth in the wild mares do not rebred yearly. Typically a foal stays with the dam close to a year. Man rebreds them yearly not nature. I have been breeding for over 20 years and I bred my mares every other year and never had problems getting them in foal. They were ridden in between foalings also.
signofthetimes
Guess, it is the TB way to get as many foals
As possible in a safe manner.
Soooo very glad you are back, Lisa G. so love
Your posts and all your hands on horsemanship
Experience. You are right Zenny’a body will decide
If she is going to have a foal, if baren no pregnancy,
If foal is small uterine lining can no longer support a foal,
That happens in late teens and early 20’s.

Dear Lisa in TN:
Thank you for your post. I always wondered about how often mares breed in the wild and how long their foals stay with them. What I have read about it, confirms what you say. Hugs, JB

It sucks to get old things just start quiting!!!LOL The Golden Years are way over rated!!!LOL
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
There is no reason why a healthy young mare cannot have a foal year after year. It won’t hurt her and it won’t hurt her little 12Z either. Her body has had time to recover from the birth. If in the future her body needs a break, nature will give her one even if her veterinarian does not. In the wild, mares spend most of their lives pregnant. With an 11-month gestation it’s a necessity.
As for a name, the Mosses have until his first start to name him–in other words, years.
JJ
I hate to contradict anyone because some people take it as an attack, but I must say that your reaction seems based solely on emotion and not on the “facts of life”
You must not forget: Zenyatta is a horse. This is what female horses do. She is not a human where having a baby every year (or less in some cases) is physically detrimental. She is in excellent health and her caregivers would not take unnecessary risks with her.
Be assured that this has been going on for hundreds of years and the nature of the business is that it will continue. I’m sure your concerns are meaningful to you and nobody should insult you for having them. But it is far from shameful that Zenyatta will be bred again. It’s the way things are done.
Carmela B/Pasadena CA
B–This is what a broodmare does. Our dear Z is a broodmare now…she will have a baby every year as long as her body & her health permit it. I would expect, as devoted as the Mosses have been, that they will proceed with the utmost care & concern for her well being. To get businesslike for a moment, she’s a very valuable mare with alot of potential to pass on…and that IS what it’s all about, like it or not. To leave her “open” (unbred) would be defeating the whole purpose of her life & future. And, as other posters have noted, it’s harder on her to leave her open for a year or two and then breed again…it’s far easier & healthier for her to have a foal every year, as long as she’s able to.
Kathy R. Canberra Oz.
Thank you all for the knowledge regarding the re-mating of the Queen – I’ve had some concerns that it may be too soon, but you experts have set my mind at ease.

How exciting! We love Tapit and what a great sire he has proven to be! Hansen, Stardom Bound, Zazu and many other winners. We may see a beautiful grey running next to her next year.
Sharon in Atlanta, GA
Hey, Kennedys in San Diego. I so agree with you. It’s going to be a long wait since I’m not even sure that she’s been bred to Tapit yet. If she hasn’t, it will surely be very soon. They don’t want to wait until later as it would mess up the foal’s birthday for the Jockey Club.
signofthetimes
She will be bred 3 to 4 weeks after foaling,
Which should be in the next week or two.
Diana Stuart
@Sign: Are you a fly on the office wall? Zenny “will” be bred when they decide it is best for her. While many are bred on the foal heat (9 days) or on the next heat (28 days) it is not always the case. Some might wait to breed in April or May to have a foal born in March or April. I personally would prefer a foal born in March or April. I don’t agree this makes for a “late” foal. Zenny herself came from a late April or early May mating.

What a great picture today. I love Tapit! Our best horse is by Tapit, he’s grey as well. Tapit was kind of our “local ” horse when he was training, so I’m exited about that choice.

Love the photo- I think it wonderful that Zenyatta will have a foal related to Hansen and Zazu!!!! AWESOME – Can’t wait to see if she foal’s a grey or if the foal will look like her again…. CAN’T WAIT – PACING!!!! LOL

Beautiful photo and I love the Tapit match up! Hope the foal is a grey; it would be a tribute to my all time favorite horse Native Dancer, (which we know is a heavy influence in Z’s pedigree!) Thanks for the update gang!

Judy—
Technically it’s a star, and as big as it looks now on his forehead, as he grows the star will stay pretty much the same size and his head will grow— so as an adult it will truly look more like a star than a moon. Take a look at how the proportions on Z’s blaze changed in relation to her head as she grew up.
a little ZenStar for the Zensters to follow—
sorry, couldn’t resist!!!

Been away for a bit, off to the dog show in Vallejo yesterday where our Champion female “Tara” was placed as Best Opposite Sex to Best of Breed and earned 3 points, which finished her GRAND Champion title! Was very much worth the 3-hour drive in the rain with both my friend and myself hacking and coughing with this year’s Big Winter Cold.

Hi all, Question about the timing. Will Z be matched with P and still have baby Z/B12 with her? Z will be in foal and have a colt at the same time? Help me out here please. I LOVE gery horses. love to you big momma and baby prince
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
Yes, she will be pregnant and still have her colt with her. In horses, nursing doesn’t reduce fertility, and being pregnant shouldn’t affect her milk production. Baby Z/B12 will be weaned around 6 months of age.
Sue
Thanks
Kathy R. Canberra Oz.
Once again, thanks so much for all this knowledge!
signofthetimes
In humans, postpartum period and nursing
Enhances getting pregnant as well. Z 12 will be weaned
In 5 months and she will be back with another
Pregnant buddy.
The TB gene pool do needs soundness and
Stamina, which she will provide.
