VERSAILLES, KY — (April 13, 2016) It is with heavy hearts that Team Zenyatta and Lane’s End Farm must announce the passing of Zenyatta’s 2016 foal by War Front. His death occurred at approximately 9:00 am this morning due to complications of meconium aspiration syndrome. We express our deep gratitude to Dr. Peter Morresey and the professionals at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital who worked tirelessly to support the mare and foal. Zenyatta is in good health and back home at Lane’s End Farm.
Update — 5:30 pm
Zenyatta has returned to the field that is her original home at Lane’s End. She has been paired with the mare Vixana, who is also owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. Zenyatta and Vixana are the same age, and they trained together under John Shirreffs at Barn 55. The two are becoming reacquainted and have already shared a drink at the water bowl.

Dear Zenyatta,
My heart goes out to you, Ann, Jerry & all those who care for you each day. I am so sad that your precious little boy left us so soon. I wish I could do more than tell you that I am sharing your grief & am keeping you in my prayers.
Thank you to the Mosses & Team Z for letting us know so quickly that Z16 had left us for heaven and that you are physically ok. They thought of your worldwide “family” and kept us informed even through such a difficult time for themselves. I hope that it helps you to know that we are all with you in thought during this painful and difficult time.
Even though we share your loss, none of us feels it as much as you and those closest to you, especially Ann & Jerry do. May the love & prayers of all your fans help you through losing your newborn son as you journey to a better time.
Z, Ann & Jerry,
I, like many others will be thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers. Our shared love & support will be with you to help you heal and journey to a better time.
love,
Donna, Amy & Cappy

This is so very tragic. My condolences to all involved.
Is there no way she could be a foster mom, esp while she may still have colostrum?
Jon P
So sad. My sincere condolences to the Mosses and everyone associated with Team Z.

Here is one of my favorite sayings. ” Grief never ends…but it changes. it’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It is the price of love.” Again, condolences.
Judy Fraizer
O, I love that.
Gretchen Jackson said after losing Barbaro, ” Sometimes grief is the price of love.” (Something to that effect).
I guess it is the mother in me, or maybe just the human, but I can’t imagine how Ann and those nearest and dearest to Zenny are holding up. And I just grieve for Zenny and that baby she will never get to mother.

Life and love hurt…God Speed…little one.

Thanks so much for this much anticipated update. Hopefully, the healing process has begun for all concerned, especially Zenyatta. So heartwarming to see Ann Moss by her side. I’m glad her new pasture buddy, Vixana is also owned by the Mosses and is someone that Z just might remember from her glory days at Hollywood Park. Again, sincere condolences to the entire Zenyatta family, but most especially to Ann & Jerry Moss, the owners who love her so much.

Oh, no, oh no, I just cant stop saying that. I prayed so hard for the foal to make it. I suppose you that were at his side the moment he was born, knew it was going to be a battle for him to overcome this.
I am so very, very, sorry for everyone’s heartbreak. I am so very thankful that Zenyatta is alright.
I prayed so hard. I guess God wanted him home to be with Z Princess.
This is so tragic to lose 2 babies. My heart is aching and I cry with you all.
I was so scared to pull up the Zenyatta site, for fear of reading this news.
Prayers for you all, and much love
Sherry Shivley
We lost twins last year but saved the mare. It still hurts to think of promises not kept and broken dreams. We will try again because we are ever optimistic. Zenyatta will successfully raise her next foal and your hearts will start to heal. Thankyou for not putting her out with the broodmares. At the Vet hospital our mare would turn away each time they led a foal by. They grieve too.

My heart goes out to the Zenyatta team …..especially Queen Z , the foal looked to be the image of her. So glad to see Ann in the field with her. They have a special bond which will help each of them accept the loss. There is no explaining why these 2 tragedies happened to such a wonderful team and Queen Z I can only say you are not grieving alone….all of the followers of Queen Z are saddened. Our love of horses sends to so many heights and when we lose one we are at the lowest part of our being. God Bless!

My Dear Z Family:
Reading all of your heartfelt posts, just want to say how thankful I am to know you and to be able to share our mutual love and, sadly, our devastation at the loss of another of Z’s babies.
As I am the only one in my family who is crazy for Z and horses in general, it is comforting to be able to share my feelings of love and sorrow for Z and the Moss’ with all of you. Reminded once again of just how precious and unpredictable life is. God Bless. Love and Hugs to all of you, JB

Judy,
I can empathize with what you’re feeling to a great extent. I too, am the only one in my family who loves horses and when I tearfully told my mother, I could tell she just didn’t quite comprehend where my deep sorrow was coming from. This precious little creature has left much much much too soon, leaving me heartbroken and dejected. It’s comforting to know others do share my feelings, even if I’ll never meet them in person. I’m stunned beyond words and every time I see his precious little face, I begin to cry again. You’re right that we were reminded yet again, but I do hope life takes a break from these tragedies, even if only briefly.
Celeste/ Massachusetts
Judy, I feel exactly as you. It is so comforting to know that so many others, who I don’t even know, are sharing my extreme sadness. This is so sad. He was so adorable and would have had such a great life. But, I have faith that he is having a wonderful life with his sister now. Thank goodness Zenyatta is ok.
Judy Fraizer
I am a Judy too and have the same situation. But I make my daughter and grandkids watch some horseracing, I tell them lots of stories about my beloved horses.
They know who Zenyatta is, and tonight I made my daughter watch the UTube Dancing Queen Zenyatta. She got the gist of what I was trying to share.
She isn’t “just a horse,” And, I am not the only one who loves her.
Cannot express the sorrow I feel for the Team, the Mosses and Zenyatta; and each of us who love her.
Marshall (NC Broad)
Dear Judy B.,
I feel just the same way — Z friends are some of the very best.
Please know that you are being warmly hugged by each of us here.
Comforting Hugs and Love to all

Thank you so much for the update and the photo of Zen. I really, really needed to see her to make sure she’s OK cause right now I’m so heartbroken I can’t stand it.
Judy Fraizer
I thought we would be celebrating, Ida. Just sitting here still in shock.
Was glad to see her with Ann in the pasture. I know there are highs and lows in this sport; this my friend, is too freaking low.

To the Mosses
Nothing we can say can ease your heartache, except that beautiful girl in the field can. The fact that even in your pain, you ease ours with words, photos, updates say what wonderful people you are. God chose you to be Zenyatta’s family, for good reason.

RIP, little guy. :(

So so very sorry!! I can’t imagine what everyone is feeling right now – the loss of 2 in a row. The Queen has everyone pulling for her! Much love to all.

So sad to here the great Zenyatta has lost another foal. Hopefully she will fully recover from the loss. The colt has such a distinct blaze. My thoughts are with Team Z.

There are no words but please know that we share in your sadness. He looked like mom and had her same gentle eyes and we are so very sorry for what came to pass.

I want to express my sincere condolences to Zenyatta and all of her family. We all know that animals grieve as deeply as human animals at the loss of their family. Please watch over her because she is suffering so much sadness. I have no words to add to the sadness I am feeling as well. Thank you for sharing the news.

Had Jerry and Ann Moss considered buying a 10 – 20 acre farm with groom’s quarters near Lexington nearer Root and Riddle and keep the mares and yearlings at home until time for the sales or training? Might be more peaceful and focused on one goal for the rest of Zenyatta’s life.
