VERSAILLES, KY — (April 13, 2016) It is with heavy hearts that Team Zenyatta and Lane’s End Farm must announce the passing of Zenyatta’s 2016 foal by War Front. His death occurred at approximately 9:00 am this morning due to complications of meconium aspiration syndrome. We express our deep gratitude to Dr. Peter Morresey and the professionals at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital who worked tirelessly to support the mare and foal. Zenyatta is in good health and back home at Lane’s End Farm.
Update — 5:30 pm
Zenyatta has returned to the field that is her original home at Lane’s End. She has been paired with the mare Vixana, who is also owned by Jerry and Ann Moss. Zenyatta and Vixana are the same age, and they trained together under John Shirreffs at Barn 55. The two are becoming reacquainted and have already shared a drink at the water bowl.

I fully agree with Z13rulz explanation of how they are helping
Zenyatta cope with the loss of her foal. Maybe they will not breed
her for 2016, and instead allow her to hang out with the other mares on that side of the farm.
The Mosses are “horse people” and have a very good knowledge of just what to do in these difficult and sad situations.
Sincere Condolences to Zenyatta and all her loving family.

Even though it might seem like it, Lane’s End had nothing to do with these tragedies. Zenyatta and the other horses there get the best of care and what has happened with the last two babies is just accidents pure and simple.

Id like to suggest everyone donate to http://www.ourmims.org/ in the name of Z16.

Shelby,
Great idea. They are a wonderful organization that does not get the publicity that some of the others do. I have donated the past 2 years in memory of Z Princess.

I am so horribly sorry for your loss. Zenyatta and Team Z do feel like family and this is just heart breaking. I am meditating on love, healing, and peace going out to you. Thank you more than words can say for including all of us in the highs and lows, it is sacred that you would share all of the experiences of beloved Zenyatta with all of us. Hope that Ann and Jerry can feel all of the love and prayers coming your way.

I am totally heartbroken. As I know the Zenyatta family is as well. Best wishes to everyone involved. I can’t believe that another Zenny baby is gone. So terribly sad. The wait is terribly long when you are expecting a beautiful foal and then the baby is born and everyone is filled with hope for him/her. Then for this baby to be taken so quick is totally tragic.
God Bless you and keep you Zenyatta and family.

Don’t want to be crass but was wondering if they buried the Little Prince there at Lanes End. I know they will never tell us exactly where but hope he is beside his sister in some beautiful hidden place.

Dear Zenyatta,
I am relieved to know that you are back home at Lane’s End & that Ann is there for you. It is comforting to know that you are together and that your love for each other will help you through your grief.
Dear Little Z Angel Baby,
You brought us such joy is the short time you were here with us. May we remember the joy you gave us and may that joy be our memory of you. We will never forget you or Z Princess.
Dear Zenyatta, Team Z & all of Zenyatta’s world family,
Thank you all for your your beautiful prayers, thoughts & poems as we help & support each other to heal through our grief of losing Zenyatta’s beautiful newborn son. It is such a comfort to hear that we are not alone & that others share our sadness.
Even the sad times in Zenyatta’s life seem to bring out the best in us – in our sadness for her, we are reaching out to help her and each other in a wonderful outpouring of caring and love.
Zenyatta,
Some may say that you are only a horse, but you, through your human connections have inspired so much good among your fans. May God keep you very close at this time. May God bless you, Ann, Jerry, Coz & Ziconic & all of your & your boys’ caretakers with only good from now on. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

I weep for Zenyatta (because I have had personal experience in how hoses greive) and I ache for Ann Moss because I know that she really loves and understands her horses. Just the picture of you, Ann with little Z16 shows how dear he was to you.
You and Zenyatta are the ones to comfort each other.

Life is so precious and Zenyatta’s new foal experienced so little. No matter how hard I try to tell myself death can knock at anytime at anyone’s door and there is a better place, it still doesn’t seem fair. He would have been so loved by his mother and so well cared for by the Moss’s. It breaks my heart. I am so sorry for the Zenyatta and the feeling of loss that she is experiencing. I am sorry for the farm and the team. Even the Queen cannot escape life’s tragedies. Bless you all.

As I continue to work to process this tragic loss, I went out on Princess Z’s memorial page today and was reminded of something.
In the wake of that tragic event I remember a lot of people found a small measure of comfort in donating, in Princess Z’s memory, to various charities; some of the Mosses favorites, some personal favorites.
Perhaps that might be a route, in Z16’s memory, that could offer some comfort to folks now?

I have just donated to the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk UK.They have just rescued some ponies in danger of drowning off the Welsh coast .Very emaciated and one heavily pregnantNow they are safe but there will always be more.

Hi!
This is so sad.
What does Zenyatta think about not having a baby to care for? Does
she not wonder where her baby went?
This is so unfortunate!
He is so cute, and looks like Zenyatta.
God love them both.

Zenny, tears :-( :-(, in photos he look quiet, white pink nose, kind horse, Zenny, your ears, Zenny, milk, you remember and look for him, may be it is well for you dont to be breed this time and to become nurse mare for some foal or filly, goods of this is not to change natural way of body of mare very much and very quickly, i dont know for to be sure, simply i think that soul of horse is like our soul, may be lil foal or lil filly near you Zenny, will help to support good quiet condition of your soul Zenny, i remember Rachel Alexandra, Oijos and Rachel’s Valentina, Rachel’s Valentina became good quick racehorse, Zenny what do you think about this ? Coz and Zi 4 furlong is well, breeze not often, choose sloppy course, beautyfull Zenny Zi Coz and mates eat apples care of health, lil 14z filly Dubai im remembering you

Hi!
How common is meconium aspiration syndrome? How can it
be prevented?
Zenyatta’s foaling was eventful since this condition is caused
during foaling.
So sad!
Lise from Maine
carolinarkansas
the passage of meconium in the uterus is not caused by foaling….it can happen before or during the birth…the problem develops when the fetus gets the meconium into its mouth and nasal passages….then after birth when the baby draws its first breath…the meconium is drawn into the lungs…..
in humans when the “water breaks” and is meconium stained….a protocol is set up to prevent the first breath until after the infants mouth and nasal passages can be suctioned out…this prevents aspiration of the meconium…
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Thanks for the explanation, Carol. It’s been a long time since I learned about this and I couldn’t remember exactly what happened.

Fearfully and wonderfully made….what a precious face, RIP sweet little prince. You were and are so so loved by many. Prayers continue for the Moss family on their devastating loss. We lift you up in prayer. God bless.

SO SAD, SO SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF THIS BEAUTIFUL FOAL.
I KNOW MR AND MRS MOSS LOVE ZENYATTA VERY MUCH
AND I HAVE SAID BEFORE THAT I WISH THEY WOULD RETIRE
ZENYATTA FROM BREEDING.
ZENYATTA HAS GIVEN SO MUCH.
RESPECTFULLY ADMIRED FROM AFAR I LOVE YOU ZENYATTA.
lauraj_cincinnati
There is no reason to retire Zenyatta from breeding. She’s a perfectly healthy mare who has had easy deliveries. The loss of 16Z was one of those unfortunate things that couldn’t be predicted or prevented. Everyone involved did their utmost to save the little guy’s life.
Zenyatta has great genes and deserves the chance to pass them on to the next generation. She is also very maternal. She would be deprived if she weren’t allowed to be a mom again. Don’t worry–she won’t be bred to the point where her health is threatened. She gets the best care possible.
