Zenyatta’s Second Foal Born April 1

Zenyatta has always been one for special occasions. In true form, she foaled just before midnight on her 9th birthday, after a day of celebration.

She delivered a healthy colt by Tapit at 11:47 pm EST on Monday April 1. Estimated at 145 lbs, he is a leggy chestnut with a white blaze similar to Zenyatta’s. Eager to start his new life, he was standing on his own by 12:18 am and nursing within an hour.

Both are doing so very well, and it’s a joy to see how much Zenyatta loves being a mom.

Thank you to all of the fans who have been following The Queen and sending good wishes and blessings. It worked!

We can’t wait to spend the day with little 13Z tomorrow, and there will be many more pictures to come!

Way to go Queen Z!!!! I was hoping for a filly but just knowing your baby is healthy and you both are doing fine is enough for me. Looks like he may have a little bit of lightening at the end of that muzzle so maybe he will turn out a Gray as he gets older, but even now he’s sure a handsome fella!

I can look at this all night long!! Can’t wait to see the other photos!!!! So, he is chestnut and won’t gray out. Wonderful. I love Chestnuts!!! I’m so thrilled, I could run around the block screaming, “Zen had another Prince!” Then again, I would get arrested. So, I’ll say it peacefully to myself!! LOL

I am so proud and excited for the Queen! I feel the same excitement I felt the night 12Z was born and I first read the news online. He may gray out, but I will enjoy his crome for now.

Happy Birthday Zenyatta, and welcome to the world 13Z!

Thank you so much for this beautiful photo of Zenyatta and her gorgeous Chestnut colt. You can see the love in her eyes! Congrats to our Lady Z, Ann and Jerry Moss, the Lane’s End Z Team and all those who love Z. She’s just so amazing — she just gave birth and looks so beautiful. Since it’s almost 4 AM in Tampa, I think I can finally get some sleep, but, I’l be checking for more photos and updates first thing in the “late” morning!

Chestnut?? Now that’s a surprising colour, seeing as Mum is nearly black and Dad is grey!! I wonder if he’ll go grey later on?? Anyway, congrats to Zenny and the team. Good to see another healthy baby out of her!! :D

Greys are usually born black and roans are usually born chestnut so he will almost definitely be a roan as chestnut is unlikely given his parents colors.

Dear Dumplings and Z-sters:This will probably get buried in an avalanche of posts, but that’s okay.

Tapit has sired chestnuts, bays, and greys, so he is heterozygous for Grey (since he has both grey and non-grey offspring). If he has sired bays out of chestnut mares, that would mean he also is heterozygous for red rather than homozygous for red. If he is homozygous for red, he could not sire a bay out of a chestnut mare. I need to see if this is the case.

It was unknown, until now, whether Zenny carried the red gene and now we know she does and is heterozygous for that gene. Were she homozygous for red, she herself would be chestnut. Even if little 13Z greys out later, his base color is chestnut. He can not be a chestnut without getting one copy of the recessive red gene from each parent.

I’d love him even if he was purple with polka dots!

P.S. In spite of the Jockey Club being about a century behind on this, the known genes that produce roan do not exist in the TB or Arabian breeds. There are Sabino and Rubiano genes that can make a horse look roan, but none of the real roan genes.

Roan does exist in TBs now thanks to a random mutation in Australia. Check out the stallion Catch A Bird – he has sired several roan foals, who have gone on to produce roan foals themselves. They are truly phenotypically roan with dark heads and legs and light bodies, non-fading with age. I believe I read that at least one was tested and confirmed Rn. None of them have left Australia and there are only a few of them, so they are all ASB.

As for other genes, Thoroughbreds have sabino, rabicano, splash white, dominant white, and frame overo pinto patterns in addition to the cream dilute which causes palomino, buckskin, smoky black, cremello, perlino, and smoky cream.

The Jockey Club is woefully incompetent when it comes to the colors actually found in their breed. Good luck trying to register your black thoroughbred as black – even if you give them DNA proof they are, they’ll still probably register it as brown.

Congratulations and what a relief. Hope all is well from now on. So many are so in love and so happy. Wonderful animals are truly God’s gift to help us here on earth. Thank you so much for letting us share your joy and feel so close to a horse that is like a dream to one who has never had a real horse. It is like a great horse story that does not have to end. Sleep well and thanks again.

He may gray out! But he’s so cute! And Z is a splendid mom! She looks like she’s taken to this whole motherhood thing. She looks as attentive as she did with Prince.

Over on the forum side I think we’ve dubbed him Blaze or Blazen. I like Blazen. But the first thing I saw as his facial markings were so much like Z!

I’m beat. Foal watch has been brutal on sleep (or should I say lack of). Z I hope you ad Blazen do well getting to know each other, sleep sound and I hope we get some video tomorrow.

    Welcome little Blazen!

Congrats to you all. And, thank you so much for continuing to give us such access to the Queen! She sure still has her sense of flair, huh?! Hmm, this b’day party’s not over yet, I’ve one more “gift” to unwrap! Seriously though, I’m thrilled all is well in the court of Queen Z and I look forward to seeing the pics in the days to come … of her and both her beautiful bouncing boys! May God continue to pour His blessings upon you all. :)

Congratulations! He is Zenyatta’s birthday gift to you! Love that blaze. With that grey around the muzzle, bet he turns grey. That is a strong and healthy foal to be up and standing in a little less than 30 minutes and nursing within an hour. You must all be so proud. Continued good health and happiness to all!
