Happy Friday!
During our June trip to Lane’s End Farm, we spent a morning with Ziconic and some of the people who oversee his training at the farm. Todd Claunch, Assistant Manager of Lane’s End, and Yearling Manager Peter Sheehan explained the ins and outs of the yearling prep process, which Ziconic started at the beginning of June.
Ziconic enjoys his morning work and the attention he receives. The staff at Lane’s End lovingly refers to him as Z, just like his mom.
In the video below you’ll hear Todd and Peter in conversation with Ann Moss as Ziconic and other yearlings work out in the farm’s walker.
Enjoy!

Dear Max.I see you sneaked in to avoid your workmen maybe afraid they would need refreshments and of course that would necessitate a visit to the kitchen!!!If I may ask how do you manage to eat at your house?
I forgot to explain to you who blue 24 is.She is a female osprey a cousin to Glesni, she was around the Dyfi last year sort of “casing the joint” and liked what she saw.She arrived back at the dyfi in late march and took over the nest along with resident dyfi bachelor Dai Dots(this is Wales remember)Now Dai isn’t good when it comes to wining and dining the girls so when Monty returned Dai left and Monty,I suppose, thinking it was his partner started mating with blue 24 and bringing her fish. All hell broke loose when Glesni returned on april 10th.I expect she was very tired after her long flight and lost the 1st round. She rested until the weekend and launched another attack, neither of the girls were seen the rest of that day and then Blue 24 returned Monday lunchtime.Even the dyfi project were beginning to think Glesni had been banished.Glesni wasn’t finished, how she battled that Tuesday April 15th and returned to HER nest that evening.Blue 24 has stayed on flying between the Dyfi and the Glaslyn project further north,we all hope, one day,she will find a mate. There’s a concert on tonight at Edinburgh Castle in readiness for the Commonwealth games.Free the Moose PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Niss4PM.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Thank you for this explanation. I now understand your admiration for Glesni. One other question. Why does Blue 24 not have a Welsh name?
I don’t have to worry about food. I have peeps who look after the place. Like Nissy. They also handle the deck. My job is paying for it.
Read that AP said that ItsaGimme is okay. He was just a little tired. Relieved about this.
I have been to Edinburgh Castle. Very impressive as is the whole city. Generally speaking the entire UK is impressive. Have never been to Wales yet.
Free the Moose! Stay cool Moosester.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Blue 24 doesn’t have a nest of her own yet so no name. There has been a male ntruder seen with her lately so maybe a future partner? It was very dull and misty in Edinburgh tonight, enjoyed the concert though.I wish I had peeps to look after my home!!!Have to do my own housework.Aidan won the Irish Oaks again although Joesph picked the wrong horse, such a delay at the start upset some of the fillies.Free the Moose.PU Dan and all injured horses everywhere.Sheena
Max
Sheena. Okay, get it. Osprey life is complex.
Casino Dan was 6th in race 9 at Saratoga today. John Shirreffs’ and Lane’s End’s horse was 8th. Not so good. Next time. Interesting thing is one of horses who was scratched in that race is – St. Moose! This guy is 5 and is a son of Lemon Drop Kid and Lady Reiko by Sadler’s Wells. Pedigree is there but so far only one win. Have to follow him.
Free the Moose! Victory to all Moose!

Here’s the race replay for Our Amazing Rose. She and Trevor were in contention most of the race, but Rose tired at the stretch. Will keep checking for her next start. Love and Hugs, JB

Thanks for posting the race, JB.
We will watch out for this lovely lady.
How about Trevor. He is riding up a storm! Love seeing these young, energetic and happy folks.

Dear Ann:
Trevor is doing great. I think we’ll be seeing him at Saratoga soon. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Max.How did Frankie get on today? There are Mooses everywhere! If you ever get to Wales in your lifetime there’ll be “a welcome in the hillsides” as we tend to say over here.Free the Moose!!!Sheena
Max
Sheena. He had two seconds on Kittens, which are pretty good racing results. He’s also new there.
Hoping that The Beast and Dan will win at Saratoga.
Wales is on the agenda. Thinking next year, although flying across the Atlantic is not my favorite thing to do. Watching that situation in the Ukraine puts you off flying. At least the FAA warned US airliners to stay out of the area months ago. Same for British Airways. Makes you wonder what those Malaysians were thinking flying in that zone. Incredibly sad for the victims and their families.
Free the Moose. Victory to all Moose, and all chestnuts. Beasts too.

Dear Peggy and Z Fans:
Peggy, not Caroline’s day today. Hope she came out of the race OK. Here’s the Diana replay. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy, Yes, it just wasn’t her day. I hope she is ok too. Really dissappointed. But, maybe will see her to race another day. Was hoping for a little more coverage of that race but TVG kept flipping back and forth. Would have loved to have seen more paddock coverage.
Ann NC
Sorry about, Caroline, she will be back. Such a group!
Congrats to, Somali Lemonade, Trainer Matz. She took Pimlico Day by storm with a huge win there. Love our fractiois fillies!
Thanks Judy B for the replay.

Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM, PC, HT, Cap, Herc and all the Sweeties
Max
JudyB. Lots of issues with that race. Have to love those feisty fillies. Love that gray filly, Tannery. Like our Tasty. Next time for Ms Thomas.
Free the Moose.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
The gray was very nice. As a matter of fact I saw several very nice gray’s today. Just Beautiful
Max
Peggy. I’m losing it. Discreet Marq was the gray in that race. Ran very well. Caroline must have had a bad day. At least she won some money. Another time for her. Chestnuts will prevail.
Free the Moose.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy and Max:
In watching the replay again, Caroline appeared to stumble shortly after the break. She was Number 7; see what you think. There were some beautiful grays on the card yesterday. Devilish Love, a Gray filly by Not For Love out of Cozennets by Cozenne won the 8th Race.
Max, you’re right about the Diana. Tom Durkin kept saying some of them just wouldn’t settle down. Love and Hugs, JB

Oops: Devilish Love’s Dam is Cozinneta out of Cozzene. (misspelled their names).
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy,
OMG, she did stumble. I got the magnifying glass out and followed her. She did. Sure hope she’s ok. Now I’ve got another one to worry about. Don’t like to see those stumbles. Be OK, Caroline.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Max:
Yes, love the feisty ones. Caroline will get ’em next time. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
JudyB. Practically all of the girls were having problems or creating them. Emollient is a very good horse to end up so far back. Same for Tannery. Ms Thomas also had an off race. Next time for her.
Free the Moose. Chestnuts must run free.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Mama Z, COZ, ZI and Z Princess:
Goodnight. Sweet Dreams. Love Ya. Hugs, JB
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Judy.Did’nt seem much pace at the start of the race Frankie got 2nd I believe.Beautiful track.Love and hugs Sheena.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Yes, I agree. No Flying Dismounts for Frankie on Saturday. Out of seven mounts, he finished second twice and fourth twice. Was a day of upsets as moderate to long shots beat the favorites (typical Saratoga).
Casino Dan and Battle Force didn’t seem to fire, although Battle Force may have needed this one as he hadn’t raced since April 2013. In the Diana, Peggy’s Caroline Thomas had a bobble early and never really was into it. The winner, Somali Lemonade, ran a great race and paid $24.60 to win. That was one of Frankie D’s seconds with Stephanie’s Kitten. Will see what today brings. We have the Eddie Read Capping Race at Del Mar too. Love and Hugs, JB

I love ziconic, he looks intelligent, aware of his sorroundings I think he will be a force to recon with.
suewVa
Ziconic IS indeed something very special…as are Coz and Z Princess. What a treasure trove of gifts our Queen has given us. May all of her family have her fleetness of foot, soundness of body, superior intelligence an enormous desire of heart to always do their very best. We could never ask for more,
Sunny B.
And be kind.

Thank you for giving us updates on the Ospreys. They are magnificent. Love and Hugs, JB
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.Some very sad stories about the Malaysian airline atrocity.Peeps taking photos of the bodies and looting. It’s just so sick.I just don’t understand why they flew in that area ,our news and TV is full of the tragedy.RIP.Sheena.Maybe our Prince of Wales was quite correct in his views on Putin the other day!
Max
Sheena. The whole thing is horrific.
As for Chuck, is anyone listening to him after the tampon fiasco? As you know, unelected royals have no role in formulating the foreign policy of the UK. Your Dave has the constitutional mandate to run your government. You do not ever see The Queen making mistakes like that.
Free the Moose!
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Sheena,
It was very nice to see the Wertheimer’a name at Saratoga today. And, their horse that won. I think everyone loved seeing Frankie too.
KathyR
Dear Sheena:
Many thanks for the latest on the Osprey family. With all that’s happening at the moment, it’s good for the soul to see both the magical Zenyatta’s growing family, and the story of the Ospreys. Australia is not a happy place just now – we had a service at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney but right now people just want the victims in a safe place. Hugs, KathyR
Max
KathyR. Very sorry for these losses to Australia. The news of it is very difficult to follow. I cannot imagine the stress that the families are enduring. Sad beyond words.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Kathy R:
So sorry for the loss of your Country men and women. Too much violence and killing in this world. Love and Hugs, JB
Sally B. (Auntie cherishes Z and her young)
Zenyatta, You have a stunning second son Ziconic!! Oh my goodness has he matured so beautifully. Thank you so very much for sharing!!! Isn’t life grand Ann & Jerry and Lanes End, having two amazing colts and an incredible daughter from the one and only Z.
Love&kisses on your soft nose and to your young,
Auntie Sally B
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear KathyR.I was so sorry to hear about the Australian casualties.I heard on the news about the service in Sydney. As you know we lost 10 Britons but the Dutch bore the brunt.I just love visiting the Ospreys and becoming involved in their lives. It’s magic and,of course, belonging to this beloved Zenyatta Nation. All good for the soul.Love and hugs.Sheena.

Here is Glesni getting very alarmed yesterday. An intruder osprey(most probably blue 24 with her new boyfriend)See how the chicks “play dead”Hugs Sheena.
http://www.facebook.com/dyfiospreyproject
Max
Sheena. Glesni is the best alarm system ever. She is heroic.
Free the Moose! Mercy for the quirky chestnut.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Sheena:
Glesni’s the best Mom. She’s gone through so much to hold on to her nest and have her babies. Love the way the chicks listen to their Mama and lay quiet. Can’t get over Blue 24 still causing havoc. Love and Hugs, JB
KathyR
Dear Sheena:
Just love these videos – it must be difficult for Glesni having to guard the nest while Monty is off getting breakfast/lunch. I wonder if she will delay her departure while there is this threat from the sulky Blue 24 and others? And would the other Ospreys actually attack the nest, if the adults are not about – assume so from Glesni’s reaction. Keep safe little family. Hugs KathyR

July 20 Cherokee Devotional
The hours were longer when we were children. Summer was a time of sunlight, bare feet, and shade trees. We fished in a creek with a crooked pole and feasted on potatoes and onions cooked over an open fire, which the Cherokee calls a tsi la. It was a good time, and we expected everything to be good. There was time to daydream-or hide out in a secret place and be quiet. Now we have less time and more responsibility-or have we let fear steal our joy? If we let it, it will tell us we can’t remember details, we hear less, our vision is blurred and we are afraid of what we see and read. Fear is a contaminate that dulls our senses. But it can’t affect us when we turn around and renew and restore our minds. The creek and the sunperch are still there to help.
We sang songs that carried in their melodies all the sounds of nature-the running of waters, the sighing of winds, and the calls of the animals. Teach your children…
American Indian

Thank you for the lovely thoughts! This devotion had so much meaning for me, and it truly touched my heart! So kind of you to do the devotionals which mean so much to so many.
Kathy
Thanks, you, Louise!
Kathy
Dear Judy and Sue,
I saw your kind words yesterday at work. It’s my PLEASURE to post these Devotionals for you. I’m glad whenever they “speak” to you.

Team Z:
Just a note to thank you for all you do to keep all of Zenyatta’s fans up to date on her and her babies.
For those of us who have followed Zen from her very first race (and those who got to know her later), she is like part of our family. And, of course, so is all of Team Z. We appreciate the time and effort that you all put into Zenyatta.com to keep all of us (still) involved in her life, and the lives of her foals.
Plus, we are all learning allot about the business of horse racing from the farm side, which is very interesting.
Best,
Jeanne

Dear Kathy. It’s so sad many children don’t seem to play outdoors as we did. They have no concept of the natural world and all it’s beauty.I just missed you yesterday. I remember the days I had to work Saturdays although it would only be for the morning.Marty is so happy to reach 7000,he was a busy boy last night handing out adbice and eating doughnuts. The reply about pooping in your food bowl only on April fool’s day had me in stitches!!Fubu is hoping to reach 12000 before the contest ends, his momma is still sick.Lucy Lu’s mommie was freezing a load of veggies and almost collapsed when daddy came to help!!
There was such a sad story on Zoe’s page about the little girl Raelyn, such a brave youngster.Makes me so mad when peeps are killing themselves in wars and you hear something like this.I hope you got to see the other video of Didga and her canine pals.So cute.Boo and Buddy are getting into mischief today by the look of their pics! Have a blessed Sabbath.Hugs to you,Kisses for Holly,Nikko and Sugar.Sheena.
Kathy
Dear Sheena,
So apparently we are Martians! That’s pretty cute. Marty and his mommy are very clever. The food bowl adbice was hilarious. So proud of how well Fubu is doing. That was nice that Lucy Lu’s dad helped out! I read about little Raelyn. She is courageous, indeed. Bless her. Have not seen Didga’s other video yet but will look it up. Boo and Buddy are absolutely charming as always. No wonder they have so many friends! You have a blessed Sabbath, too. Hugs from me, kisses from Holly, Nikko and Sugar. Kathy

Loved James Garner, especially his movies with Doris Day.
I always chuckle when I read his response to “would you ever do a nude scene?”
His answer ” I don’t do horror films.”

I enjoy these clips soooo much!!! Ziconic is maturing into a beautiful equine!! …but then he’s always been beautiful. :)

Dear Max.Good to see Western Hymn back to winning ways in the Eugene Adam today. He may run over a mile and a 1/2 at York next. They say Charlie Hills is one of the trainers caught up in the morphine scandal and maybe a top Newmarket trainer??The Moose must be freed!Hugs Sheena.
Max
Sheena. Just read about Western Hymn is back winning. Derby was not his race. They may go after Australia.
See that Encke will soon be back soon. Read about the beak drug inquiry. If this proves to be substantive and the beak hands out less severe penalties than they gave to the Moose, I’m going ballistic.
Free the Moose. Let the Moose go free.

Dear Kathy R
So sorrry for the losses your county suffered and all the countries that lost loved ones.
I think one from the US too. This was just so horific. Such a tragedy and seemed it shouldn’t have happened. Why were any of them flying through that area with all the problems going on there. And, with the way they are handling it after it happened. Just terrible.

SO BEAUTIFUL, 3 SOCKS, JUST LIKE BIG RED. Z’s BABIES ARE SO BEAUTIFUL, ALL OF THEM. CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT THEY DO ON THE TRACK. BLESSINGS TO ALL AND GOOD LUCK.
