Happy Friday!
During our June trip to Lane’s End Farm, we spent a morning with Ziconic and some of the people who oversee his training at the farm. Todd Claunch, Assistant Manager of Lane’s End, and Yearling Manager Peter Sheehan explained the ins and outs of the yearling prep process, which Ziconic started at the beginning of June.
Ziconic enjoys his morning work and the attention he receives. The staff at Lane’s End lovingly refers to him as Z, just like his mom.
In the video below you’ll hear Todd and Peter in conversation with Ann Moss as Ziconic and other yearlings work out in the farm’s walker.
Enjoy!

Has anyone watched a documentary on PBS. (Don’t know what the name of it was) caught it getting close to the end and I got so upset at the end just turned the TV off.It was friday night so it really gave me a bad weekend.
Still Don’t know how I feel about this, very mixed emotions.
It was the story about this lady in Africa that took in abandoned animals especially elephants. One in particular that the story was about the baby elephant’s name was Isha. A Baby. The baby’s mother was killed by pochers and this lady took it in. I think her name was Dafney. Dafney showered this baby with love. And Isha just addored this lady. As a little bit of time went on she followed this new mother to her, everywhere.
Little Isha was not quite 6 months old. Dafney had to leave to go to I believe Kenya to plan her daughters wedding. While she was gone Isha just got devastated, stopped eating. The lady did leave good people to look after her. Would not eat or drink
This little baby grieved terribly. It was all on film as they had filmed it. (The Story of Isha) Christmas day l975 she died not quite 6 months old.. The lady did get back right before she died but it was to late to save Isha. She literally grieve herself to death.
This lady is now in Africa devoting her life to save elephants.
This little Isha was one of the most beautiful little souls I think I have ever seen. I was just uncontrolably crying at the end of this film and crying again now.
I don’t know how I feel about this. Did this lady get to close. but she saved her in the beginning???????????I have asked myself what have we learned from this.
I always heard the same thing happened with Man O War a month I believe after he lost his groom
We are losing so many elephants in Africa so this story is still so pertinant today.
God bless them and I hope we can save as many as we can.
If anyone ever would put in question about how animals feel should surely watch this documentary about Isha. I will give a warning to it and they should have, it is terribly sad. Hope more elephants can be saved.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
I did watch the story of Aisha and Daphne Sheldrick, My Wild Affair, on PBS the other night. The tears were flowing. Remarkable beings and remarkable woman. Everyone should see this, especially those that don’t think animals have feelings; this story will make believers of them. Love and Hugs, JB
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Judy,
I went in this afternoon and looked them up. So sorry I misspelled their names. Such a remarkable story Daphne Sheldrick has saved over l50 elephants.Did not know she was Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Her husband died in a plane crash in Kenya in l977.
Such a wonderful story. A friend of mine that lives in Savannah about 4or5 years ago sent me a video email of The Blue Train of Africa and I have just been fascinated with the country ever since. It’s beautiful.
The elephants like Barbara said are just wonderful. So hope we can save a lot of them.
Isn’t it ironic we both saw this and were crying terribly. A Tearjerker. But with her going on to save a lot of them it’s encouraging.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Mrs. Sheldrick has done so much for these beautiful baby elephants it does give us hope. Unfortunately, the poaching and killing continues. We must have been crying together and didn’t even know it. Love and Hugs, JB

Peggy (N)–I am so glad you brought up this topic. I have had a deep love for these animals ever since I read Cynthia J. Moss’s “Elephant Memories: Thirteen Years in the Life of an Elephant Family”. They are such noble, wonderful animals, and their plight should be addressed by all who care about animals. Cynthia has several books out now, I believe.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Barbara
If you ever see it advertised on PBS watch it. It is terribly sad but wonderful. I am sure Isha is one little Angel now. I will read Cynthia’s books.
It really stopped me in my tracks.
Barbara Wood
I think I may have seen part of it before. Will watch for it.

Dear Peggy. We hear a lot about Dame Daphne Sheldrake in the UK and how she has saved so many orphaned elephants. It was terribly sad about Aisha but it only taught them at the sanctuary never to allow a calf to totally depend on one person.I believe the Cynthia Moss Barbara talked about is the lady who was involved with Echo the elephant.I think she was 59 when she had her last calf and 65 when she passed away. It’s so tragic these magnificent creatures are being slaughtered every day for their ivory. It sickens me.Love and hugs Sheena.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Sheena
I saw this for the first time Friday night.. My eyes are still swollen. The elephants are such beautiful creatures. Have you ever seen anything as precious as Aisha. So glad I found out about Dame Daphne and Aisha. I’m counting on us all meeting again in heaven.

Dear Max.Sheikh Hamdam is running Mukhadram in the King George and Queen Elizabeth as well as Taghrooda,Paul Hanagan is keeping the ride on Tag and Dane O’Neill is riding Mukhadram.I’m really hoping she can win for her daddy.Don’t you think they should name these horses and trainers with the morphine scandal. The BHA are keeping very quiet.I know innocent until proved guilty but…As for Encke I can’t help but think he won the St Leger while using a banned substance and maybe robbed us of a triple crown winner. Now we will never know what might have been.Nissy’s got 3000 likes on FB whoo-hoo!The senate next!Free the Moose.PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Sheena.
Max
Sheena. I don’t understand the concept of running your own horses against each other. Agree with Mort Fink. He said that he would never run any of the Dans against each other. However, in this situation, I do hope that Tagi wins. Who is running against her besides her stablemate?
The beak may be best to keep their drug inquiries confidential until they have some evidence. The reputation of people who have done nothing wrong might be tarnished otherwise.
As to Encke, I think about Camo every time Encke’s name is mentioned. Don’t blame the horse however. He’s completely innocent. Long lay off for him too.
Heard that Al is still 20 kilos overweight. Not exactly certain what that is in pounds but it doesn’t sound too bad. Trainer said that they have been exercising Al up and down hills to take off the weight. Al is happy with this. Trainer also said that Al has a noble character and is a very nice horse to train. Good to hear these comments. Not like shorty.
Have you heard that Pique is going back to hurdles very soon? I think that he’s running next weekend. Pique, you are an amazing gray wonder.
Moosie is twitting that he will be back in October. Give Moosie time off his sentence. He’s done enough
, although he hates to run in hot weather. Same for cool.

Thank you Ann, Jerry, Team Z, and Lanes End for keeping us all in the loop in regards to all things Zenny!!! Zi is growing into an “Adonis” in the TB world. Most of the fillies who race, weigh in at 900+ lbs, and Zi’s already 936lbs at only 15 months. He carries it well and he is going to be one solid horse once he matures. Thank you also for the video of Ziconic prepping for further training when he goes off to Mayberry Farm. He appears to love what he’s doing, and he seems to take everything in stride. Traits that will prepare him well for his future in racing.
sheena.davies(wales)
Dear Max.I have never understood owners running their horses against each other either. It’s all about money really and having 2 chances of winning a race and even more if you are Aidan O’ Brien.I hadn’t heard about Pique, certainly a tough horse Even though we use the metric system over here I always convert to lbs and ozs I believe a kilo is equal to just over 2lbs.Al will come on from that race in Newbury.I never, ever blame a horse for anything that goes wrong. It’s always jockey, trainer etc!The BHA must free the Moose in october they’ll get loads of emails from me.Hope Frankie feels better soon and gets back riding soon. How’s the decking work getting on?Free the Moose.PU Dan and all sick horses everywhere.Niss4Senate or even PM!Sheena.
Max
Sheena. The whole idea should be to try to find races in which horses can compete well and win. Dooming one inevitably to also ran status seems tough on a horse. They know what is going on.
Pique is truly a wonder horse. Coming back from near death with colic to win at Royal Ascot and then return to hurdles is incredible. This horse can do anything.
As to the deck project, nothing seems to get done on work days. Saturdays and Sundays is less than nothing. The theory is that the neighbors need peace and quiet on weekends, but they are getting that from Monday to Friday too. Also if it rains, no work then either. Forecast is rain.
Free the Moose!
Max
Sheena. Pique Sous is to run in the Galway Hurdle at Ballybrit on July 31. Punters have made him the favorite because of the bashing that they took from him in the Queen Alex Stakes at Ascot. Not certain who will ride with him. As you know, Ryan Moore rode at Ascot, but one assumes that Mullins will go with a jumps jockey like Paul Townsend. Don’t think that Moore does jumps?

July 21 Cherokee Devotional
When we are appalled at the other person’s ignorance, it is hard to believe that our own is just as profound. We stand in awe that they do not see what is so apparent, but in all our self-confidence we are as much in the dark as the next person. We are just ignorant on different subjects. What one person studies intensely may mean nothing to someone involved in another idea. But it takes all of us to make up the families of the world. We each have a purpose-and none of us quite like another. Time, circumstances, and beliefs have separated some as far as the east is from the west. It is not that we were created to be nu da le hna v, different or separated-but that we chose. We chose. We had the freedom to choose, and therein lies the difference.
You think I am a fool, but you are a greater fool than I am.
