SANTA ANITA TO HOST ZENYATTA BABY SHOWER;
‘IT’S A BOY’ POSTER FREE TO ALL THIS SATURDAY,
‘TEAM ZENYATTA’ AVAILABLE FOR AUTOGRAPH SESSION
Santa Anita Park will proudly host an equine baby shower in honor of the great Zenyatta’s newly arrived foal this Saturday, March 17. All on-track attendees will receive one “It’s a Boy” poster, free with their paid admission and will have an opportunity to meet “Team Zenyatta” in an autograph session prior to the races.
“The entire racing world is buzzing about Zenyatta’s new colt, who was born in Kentucky last Thursday night (March 8),” said Chris Quinn, Santa Anita’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Zenyatta is easily the most popular horse of the past 25 to 30 years and people are clamoring to see and learn more about her new baby.
“We want to thank Jerry and Ann Moss and the entire Zenyatta team for helping us to make this happen and we look forward to following the progress of Zenyatta’s first foal in the weeks and months ahead. I think all of us here at Santa Anita are hopeful that someday, we’ll get to see this precious horse race here in Southern California.”
“The Queen’s Dance,” a life-size painting of Zenyatta on post parade, will also be on display at Santa Anita on Saturday. This magnificent work of art, first unveiled during Breeders’ Cup week this past November at Churchill Downs, was created by Jaime Corum (whose posters and original artwork will be available at the gift shop this weekend).
Corum, along with members of the Zenyatta team, will be on hand Saturday and will participate in the Zenyatta autograph session which will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Santa Anita’s East Paddock Gardens area.
Several charities, including CANTER of California Old Friends, Race for Education and EAGALA, which have been involved with Zenyatta throughout her legendary racing and now maternal career, will be represented at Saturday’s event.
First post time on Saturday is 12:30 p.m., with the Grade I Santa Margarita Stakes (won by Zenyatta in 2010) and the Irish Obrien Stakes headlining a festive St. Patrick’s Day card.
Be sure to check back soon for the new “It’s a Boy” photo gallery posted in the “photos” section of zenyatta.com

Hey Karen Thank you for that post, I’m sitting here watching Lionel ritchie on HSN and reading posts. Such great music and I am so glad to hear this about Hollywood Park. I want to visit one day. One of my top favorite tracks. Love to all. Peggy

Interesting, thanks Karen! I never like “renaming” deals, as I’m partial to the old names, like just “Hollywood Park”, but I will somehow get used to “the commercial” in even the name. But I do want the track to continue to operate, and if that’s the only way to get that done, so be it. I’m always hoping someone will put up the dough, without needing to commercialize the name, so that the old name can’t be uttered any more as it once was. Somehow that’s a shame.
Another example was how Mann’s bought “Grauman’s Chinese Theatre”, and renamed it “Mann’s Chinese Theatre”, but really, “Grauman’s” was part of the name since Sid Grauman owned it so many years ago, and after awhile, Mann’s apparently saw the light, and put the old name back. Kudos to that decision. Everything in life does not have to be a commercial for something.
I am hoping Hollywood Park will have a renaissance, as a wonderful result.
Karen Gogue PROUD Nanny/Granny ♥♥
Hi! It will always be known as “Hollywood Park”. Who’s gonna say “Let’s go to Betfair” ? LOL! Apparently, Betfair only has the naming rights thus far, maybe with a little extra say in some things – I do hope they will be able to buy out Hollywood Park outright down the road …. I think if that happens, then HP will be truly saved. One can only hope.

Hi there Zenny, Baby Z, Tasty X 2, Team Z @ BARN 55 & LE and ZEN-STERS:
Just dropping you all a line to say that it’s been hard to write something here this week since it’s been a bit “action-packed”! I am around, though, and reading up the comments on new posts.
@ Sierra: I love your stories! Keep on writing, girl!
@ Zen-sters attending Z’s Baby Shower: Have LOTS of fun! Of course, you hardly need to be exhorted to enjoy yourselves, right? Especially at such a great-sounding party for a terrific cause! I’ll be there with you in spirit.
@ Team Z: The new baby pictures by Mathea K. are just wonderful. They show such a loving mother & baby boy.
ENJOY the Baby Shower & Racing this weekend. Havre de Grace will be back!
Love & hugs to all

Yep, they’re wonderful, I just got caught up with all of them. I was so tired when I got home from work, i fell asleep in the recliner, and woke up after midnight. I dutifully went to bed, but that didn’t work, so here I am. I just love how Zenny and 12-Z stay in close contact. The planet and orbiting moon.

Dear Team-Z,
I’ll be out at Santa Anita, tomorrow. I hope it’s not RAINED-OUT !?!
I’ll check with SA and HRTV, befor driving the 45 miles. The poster is TOO CUTE !!

Okay well the next chapter is going to be delayed I accidentally deleted part of it. Plus I need to do some work around the house it is way too messy. But I promise I will get it to everyone tomorrow morning. So sorry I just have way too much to do. Finals are coming up and I am starting to freak out.

Someone with some good ‘horsey sense’ please explain something to me. Baby Z has three shades of brown/black on him. Now how long from now will he start turning to one of those shades. And do you think he will be dark bay brown like his parents? Just Wondering.
Julie DuVall / Ontario, CA
He’s still in his foal coat, which is super fuzzy. He’ll shed it out as he gets older and his “real” color will show up. He’ll almost definitely be dark bay like mom and dad, maybe a slightly different shade than them.
Marty R / Colorado
Hope everyone going to Santa Anita tomorrow has a GREAT time!!! Will be waiting to hear about your adventures. Try to stay dry.

@Judy Berube
Interesting observation you’re making in the difference of expressing motherly feelings between Zee & Wee and RA and ‘Rae’s Al'(my name for her little guy).
Looks like as in human family dynamics, the cycle of behavior is more often but not always repeated. A good maternal/paternal relationship is such a huge steppingstone. Zee was always referred to as the kind mare, by racehorse standards anyway. The pictures are just beautiful, what lucky horses.

Rachel was always a little higher strung, but she was
A front runner. She did get a little miffed or bothered
Toward the end of her pregnancy, pinning ears and
Nipping.
Zenny is a very special mare, as mares are traditionally
Hormonal and difficult to get along with. If not all the
Time in spirts. A friend of mine took her mare to a show,
The first week she was an angel and performed very well.
The second week she was rushing the fences and acting
Very pissy or hormonal.

Dear Carolyn:
I think RA’s a very wonderful mom. I just get a kick out of Z and how she always makes sure the little guy is in front of her where she can see him.
Reading about RA’s Dam, Lotta Kim, rejecting RA, made me wonder what kind of nurturing she, herself, received as a foal. Just happens sometimes in nature, I guess. Sometimes, sadly, even with human babies left abandoned.
Here’s a video of RA and her baby boy. Enjoy.

Thanks, Judy. I’m certainly not sure, but seriously doubt that Lotta Kim felt connected to her mom, or there must have been some other problem, that has made her so “ornery” as they said. That’s the only video I’ve seen of Rachel & her colt, and I haven’t seen whether she dotes on him, licks, or cuddles him. I was glad to see 12-R gets human loving, that will help. He is very cute!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Vicki B., Sharon, Darlene and Z Fans:
You’re so welcome. I was so curious about Lotta Kim that I tried to find more info on her. It’s funny because she had a foal in 2011 by Medaglia d’Oro (full sister to RA) and she was fine with her. Here is an article and some photos of LK and the little one.
http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/throughthelens/archive/2011/03/19/lotta-to-live-up-to.aspx
RA was her first foal (2006). She had a colt in 2007 who sadly had to be euthanized two years later as a result of Wobbler’s syndrome (spinal cord compression). She had no other babies until the filly in 2011. So maybe she just needed to mature. I couldn’t find any info on Lotta Kim as a foal. Find all of it so interesting. Hugs, JB
Vicki B. near Hollywood Park
Thanks, Judy. It does look like Lotta Kim has become more comfortable with motherhood. Maybe she was just too young or immature with R.A., unfortunately for Rachel.
The Wikipedia article did also mention that “her 2008 foal was born prematurely and died.” So after R.A. she had two losses. But maybe finally things are ok.

I don’t have horse sense, but it seems to me, the coloring around Zee’s & Wee’s snooties are a repeat of the coloring of Zee’s Mom, Vertigeneux. So I think it’ll stay. Hope his little star will grow a bit more elongated, more of the top of an exclamation point as Zee has.
Eveline / Maryland.
Sorry Sunny, the markings will stay the same his entire life.
Julie DuVall / Ontario, CA
The latest weather report I saw on the news predicts the worst of the storm should pass through before noon, so hopefully the rain will start to taper off by first post. They’ve already postponed the San Luis Rey until next weekend in anticipation of the rains, so I’m betting the Irish O’Brien will be off the turf tomorrow. St. Pat’s Pitch has been cancelled and the infield will be closed entirely. Stay dry, everyone!!!
SunnyBoyd
oh, interesting how Curlin’s little one has that very pronounced sharp straight snootie already, in his profile pics. Most little guys have the somewhat rounded snootie appearance. Kinda like a puppy look.

Dear Zenyatta and friends,
Today, a horse that I leased and showed all last year has had a stroke today. I fell in love with this horse and even though I was leasing another horse this year, Tramp (his name) has always been special. I have never loved anything the way I love him. The vet is comming to check on him on the 27th, and most likely put him down. He has had a nice and long life, being 25 years old this April. Please keep him in your prayers so he can at least live to his 25th birthday on April 12th this year. Thats the least I can do for this amazing horse who has carried so many riders throughout his years. I learned more from his back than I did in all my years of riding. He means so much to me. Please pray for him. He really deserves it. I love you Trampers, forever and always.
With love,
Sheri </3

Sierra
Sheri. I know how this feels well I hope that he recovers I know how great the joy is when they are fine but sometimes when it happens again it is time. I hope you will find comfort was Zsters and that Tramp does not need to be put down. But 25 is a good long happy life. I know my horse was 29 going on 3 when had to put him down but it was good to know he was happy instead of miserable. Right before I walked into the paddock to say good bye I used my same chirppy(As my mom calls it) happy voice and called “Spike!” and even though he was heavily drugged he perked up and looked at me with the same happy expression that he always gave me. I am sure that if putting him down is what it comes to that he will be happy to have known you and that he will not forget you. I will keep him and you in my prayers.

@Judy B. , I rewatched the video and noticed RA drifting out a bit grazing. What I’m wondering is what is that big splotch of his coat missing of his neck for? I’m puzzled.
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Hannah:
I was wondering the same thing. I know another poster said it might be due to shaving a spot to do blood work. I believe all the foals have blood taken for necessary routine testing. Maybe one of the more knowledgeable Z’sters can answer your question better than I. Hugs, JB
signofthetimes
Yes, Hannah I think that is an area shaved for
Bloodworm. It is right in the place on the neck they
Draw blood. I think they draw it pretty often to check
The goals antibodies received from Mom. Day 1 Lanes
End said they drew IGG level for antibodie production
And Lanes End gives all of the foals an oral antibody
Supplement. All of this to make sure they are healthy, staying
Healthy and can fight off infection. Their Antibody production
Is very different from humans.
Heidi K (easing into the transition) (Vallejo, Ca.)
Hannah. With TB foals, they have to have blood drawn for DNA purposes and also, since Rachel and her colt went to the hospital, they had to give him and her additional fluids and or, meds. Look at it like, checking a babies vitals.
Example.. In humans, you can normally find the “main artery” with a tourniquet, on the arm etc.. In equines, there is a “particular” area on the neck (lower on foals than grown horses, that area gets up towards the throat latch). In order to See the Correct Vein on foals, you have to shave that area. On some older horses with long coats, you have to do the same?
Anyways, I hope that helps/
Hannah

Agree, Max. I hope Tasty being “late”, does not mean any problem, and is maybe just normal for her as a maiden mare.

@ALL–Happy Saint Paddy’s Day tomorrow! I’ve been away most of the day for March Madness. Some real shockers are going on , with high-seeded teams falling in the first round.
News in today from Old Friends about the passing of Fortunate Prospect. RIP< dear boy.
Praying that Marlene Dodge can rescue the horses from the slaughter pipeline. She is such a heroine. She told me once she's never failed to make her quota, but I'm concerned this time, and I know she must be too. Every day I get letters from rescues who are stretched very thin because donations are down. I give to as many as possible, but that makes the amounts smaller.

At this point it is unlikely they will be able to put Tasty and her foal in with Z and z12. The age difference between the foals will ust be too pronounced.
