On a happier note, I just received the Blood Horse Triple Crown Commemorative Edition with American Pharoah in it (and on the cover). I can’t wait to peruse it — probably all Sunday afternoon! All the TC winners are in there, too, so it will definitely take longer than one afternoon.
Everyone, stay safe and have a lovely Sunday!

So glad Tonalist won the Gold Cup- sounds like JV had to take control and hold him back. JV said he let him do what he wanted to do and he did not win. He needs the help of JV. Great win, he is a great horse.

Questioning Aunt Nellie was an eye-opener. Her face, some said, was like the wrinkled Black Hills but it was wreathed in smiles and mischief when we asked her most favorite things. She said quite simply:
“A full box of wooden matches, a jar of mentholatum, the smell of coffee…and I reckon any kind of fresh fruit.
“Young children were sent to neighbors to borrow fire…and when our legs ached E li si rubbed kerosene on them to warm the muscles. The other things are just something I liked and still do. No, we didn’t have anything, but we knew how to hunker down until the hard times passed.”
And then she added, “People need to learn how to do that now.”

She is in good form. Just saw the replay. She is the only one that was making up ground, but did not have her usual turn of foot, it was definately the ground and GH was barelling down to the finish line. Beautiful ride by Frankie. Treve’s pacemaker became GH’s.

The decision by Head-Mareek to remove Dettori as Treve’s jockey is now ironic. Using a pacemaker also backfired. Treve however retires to stud as a remarkable racing mare. A two time Arc winner is a great achievement for any horse.

The decision to remove Frankie as a rider on Treve had to do with him holding her
too tight when she was pulling. They got into a tug of war and the horse always wins that game but loses the race because they are fighting the rider. She was losing races when Frankie rode her. He rides with a tight grip. Thiery rides her with a long rein so she is not fighting him and wasting her energy so she started winning again. Frankie has a better style of riding that suits GH. Thiery held Treve back too far like Sheena said and let GH get too far ahead of her.

Dear Max.My first thought when GH won!I think like everyone I would have loved an historic 3rd win for Treve.I felt Janet gave her too much to do on fast ground. He was way behind and allowed Frankie a head start. She should have been up among the leaders.I know that’s not her style but she could produce that fantastic turn of foot on fast ground. The British horses loved it though we haven’t had good ground since June!!
Wise Dan is going to spend the winter at Charlie’s then try him as a stable pony.He looked fabulous parading yesterday.Hugs Sheena.

Golden Horn won decisively. Very intense race. Flintshire did well too. I was sorry to see Treve lose. I suspected that she would not win because Head-Mareek was afraid as early as last June that Golden Horn was coming on strong for that win. She was thinking even then of supplementing a pacemaker. However, as a mare, a loss in this race takes nothing away from Treve’s career as a broodmare. It’s going to be difficult to reproduce herself, but Urban Sea did it.
Dan did look great. I miss him a lot, but I’m glad that the horse is well. Dan definitely needs a job. Lopresti will find one that suits.

Dear Tizgood.No.Treve is definitely off to stud now!She just didn’t have the same action on fast ground and the mile and 1/2 suited GH down to the ground. It was a peach of a ride by Frankie and his son Leo is 16 today!Double celebration.I cannot imagine GH coming out to the US.He will retire at the end of the season which is a shame. He’d be such a strong 4yr old but he was eyeing the fillies while in the stables! The British are doing well today Gold Dream wins the Abbaye!Hugs Sheena

    Dear Sheena,
Gosden said the owner is keen on bringing GH to the US for the BCC. It is a month away and Gosden said if GH is in good order he will be coming to take on AP and Beholder-this is all in Bloodhorse. That will be some race for sure. AP better have his A+ game on; he has run as much as GH has this year and GH has run twice at a mile and a half.
Between the Arc and the BCC and Beholder, Treve, AP, GH and Gleneagles it is going to be a very exciting 2015 between the English and American TB. I think GH is going to like the dirt if he can stay away from the kick back, he love the firm ground.

Bloodhorse quotes Gosden as saying that the owner may send Golden Horn to the Breeders Cup Turf. There is no discussion of racing in the Classic against AP. The English media also say that Golden Horn may stay in the UK for Champions Day. This is the route that Frankel took, and it turned out very well.

It is one thing for a UK horse to travel to Paris for the Arc. Going to Kentucky is another thing entirely as in far and foreign. Whether we like it or not, with Wise Dan’s retirement, the best turf horses in the world are in Ireland, the U.K. and Europe. Also Australia. In addition, the purses for Champions Day are very attractive. When he retires, Golden Horn will be competing with other turf horses like Frankel, his dad Galileo and Brad Pitt for high quality mares. It’s important to keep his record as near to perfect as possible and not to take unnecessary travel risks when the races on his door step are the best available anywhere. We also already know that Golden Horn prefers to race to the right.

Dear Max.I read on Wiki that it was GH’s last appearance in Europe today and his owner would love him to come out to the BC .What is the distance of the turf race there hope it’s a mile and a 1/2 he’s at his best then.Epsom is left-handed and he coped well there. You have to be a very balanced horse to deal with that track.I heard Tacticus was euthanised during training today at Keeneland. Was’nt he with Graham Motion?
Treve owes us nothing she has had a fabulous career just couldn’t find that fantastic turn of foot today on fast ground. She has put in a lovely congratulatory post for GH on her FB.Just hope we still get news about her and her foals.Hugs Sheena

      Dear Sheena,
BCC is run at a mile and a 1/4 which is our classic distance. He will still do great at that distance. We only have to one dirt race at a mile and a 1/2 and that is the Belmont stakes and a few turf races at a mile and a half. I think the owner wants a shot at out TC winner.
Our dirt tracks our flat so balance is not an issue it is the kick back. I am sure Gosden will work him on that before he comes. Did you see my post above, bloodhorse put Gosden’s comments from the owner about GH coming to the BCC as well.

Breeders Cup Turf is a mile and a half- horses do go in both directions in Europe
Treve has run both right and left. US horses only go in one direction except for those who run the Santa Anita downhill turf course The UK flat turf courses have both right and left turning courses. European courses have a lot of variety and ate not rigid !!!!!

          BGG,
Thanks for the link! Good to know the healing is progressing and that you can stay on-line for a longer time. Keep up the good work, and stay well.

Love, love, love seeing Zenny. Thank you Team Z.

Sheena, Mr. Fibbs, how cute! Been keeping the doughnuts high! Bless the folks in SC and other areas dealing with this weather.

Thank you to Team Z for sharing this awesome time in Zenyatta’s career! I do so miss
beautiful Zenny and beautiful Hollywood Park! Things are just not the same anymore
in the world of racing without both of them! ;( It will be a happy time when Zenny has
her new foal. :) Can’t wait!!!

Sending peace and blessings to all in the Land of Zen!
    Love,
    Kathy from SoCal (San Diego)
