Dear Fans,
Today we celebrate what would have been our filly’s first birthday by remembering the joy that she brought to the world. We created a memorial page for Z Princess with a collection of images, videos and memories from those who loved her.
This page will always be here on Zenyatta.com in celebration of her life.
With love,
Team Z

Thank you, Team Z, and especially to Ann Moss, for sharing such poignant memories with us. Your generosity is amazing and in itself is a lasting tribute to the beautiful Z Princess. I haven’t the right words to express my deep feelings other than another thank you.

Dear Team Z,
I saw her photo and tears came. Princess Z gave such joy…even her blaze seemed to say, look world, how much I am like my Mom. Easter 2014, was it not her birthday.
Thank you, dear Team Z.

as she has grown in her reign up to het 89 th year. A woman to be honored and admired

I thought that maybe if I waited a day, I could write this without crying, but that’s not happening. Like everyone else, I remember the glorious Easter morning of her birth and the phone call from a Z Dumpling telling me the tragic news of her death. At that moment, I was hours away from getting on a plane to go to the Breeder’s Cup. Yes, I know how lucky I was to be able to do that, but travel is not easy for me, and this trip was complex in many ways – not the least of which was needing all of the logistics to go right so that four of us (each flying into different terminals) could meet up at LAX, get to the rental car place, and then drive over those LA freeways to Pasadena. I had made many of the arrangements, and I needed this to “work.”
I knew that if I let the reality of this tragic news into my brain, I would never make it. I didn’t talk to anyone, I didn’t go to the blog, I just kept packing in hopes that I would be able to get at least a little sleep before a very early plane the next morning. Being at Santa Anita was almost surreal. The flowers kept forming a beautiful tribute at the base of Zenyatta’s statue, and people just stood there in disbelief. Cynthia Holt and I were at the statue when the florist brought the beautiful heart from Jan Stein and Joyce Young in Texas. It was beautiful beyond words. It still didn’t seem real – I still couldn’t cry. It was wonderful to be with so many Dumpling friends, but grief affects us all in different ways. Some of us (certainly including me) were not at our best and probably said and did things we wouldn’t have under different circumstances while trying to make the best of a long-awaited trip.
So today my heart goes out to Jerry and Ann Moss and everyone on Team Z. Thank you so much for this beautiful tribute to Z Princess. The videos and pictures are moving beyond words, and the tears that have been inside for so long are flowing at last. We will always remember our beautiful Princess and the joy that she brought. She is with many loving friends in heaven – all waiting at the Rainbow bridge. ♥♥♥

After looking at all the pictures, tributes, and videos featured in the Z Princess memorial, I was just filled with such a bittersweet feeling: thankfulness that we had her for even such a short time and sadness in thinking about what she might have become as she grew. Right now, Princess would have been preparing for the next step after weaning and would have been in “horse racing kindergarten” learning her “ABCs” before making the journey to Mayberry for the next step in her training. She would be learning to wear a saddle. She would have lost all her coppery baby fur and mellowed into the gorgeous chocolate color of a bay. And she would still be “the Boss” of her paddock friends, keeping her playmates in line. So many what ifs and what could have beens. We can only imagine…

How can we ever thank the whole Z Team, and most especially, the Mosses, for their incredible generosity in sharing all of the photos and videos from yesterday’s tribute to beloved Z Princess? It is wonderful to know that we will be able to return to them again and again to feast our eyes on that precious and magical creature. I could not even dare to look at the blog until I got home from work last night,as I had been told by email (thank you, Sandy) that I wouldn’t be able to handle it at work. At home I was just able to let the tears flow, and, flow they did!
I was actually on the plane, headed for the Breeder’s Cup, when I heard of her passing, having been seated next to two horsemen also headed for the races. We started talking about horses and I mentioned being a Zenny fan and blogger. One of them said “it’s too bad about her filly”. I, of course asked him what he was talking about and, when he explained, immediately told him it must be one of those rumors that get started about famous folks passing away. I just couldn’t believe it!! He pulled out his smart phone and found the info online on one of the racing sites. I was stunned and brokenhearted. The whole weekend, for me,became about Z Princess, (and California Chrome. Just wanted him to run safely and do his best.) I was fortunate to be able to get a nosegay of roses for the statue (all the way from the airport,I had kept thinking I just HAD to DO something!) and I cannot count how many times over the two days that we had to keep returning to the statue to pay our respects. I don’t think that a day has gone by since then that I have not had her in my thoughts, several times. I keep trying to focus on how wonderful it was that she DID live, and knew so much happiness and love from all who surrounded her. She knew the warmth of the sun on her back, the joy of running in the wind, the quiet serenity of grazing next to her beautiful mother, and the certainty that she was loved by all who knew her. I’m sure she was greeted by many of the greats as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge and it is my hope that I will see her ,one day, after I have crossed it myself!

Dear Sue Noel in Sun Valley,
What a lovely post. I really admired your composure upon hearing and confirming the news of the young Princess’s passing while in flight. I say to myself, would I have been that composed. I like you thought it was some malicious rumor started be someone and just kept screaming ‘ Noooo God’ over and over when I confirmed that she was indeed gone. For weeks I don’t think I was too happy with God because I kept saying to him, What did she ever do to deserve going home?. I could just hear him say, ‘ my Princess my call, deal with it’. The only other time or should I say, one of the other times I felt unhappy with God was when the Queen lost the second Breeders cup. He is a good God and am sure he alone knows why and it’s okay. He shared her with us so we should be grateful which we are.
Now , ZPrincess can watch over First Prince as am sure he misses her soo. I see he loves all things females starting with his mom. Anyways, Thanks and have a wonderful evening. It is always well at Z Nation.

I can not fathom why this Lovely filly was taken so early in her life. The only thing I can come up with is that WE, fans of racing and ALL animals need to help those in need. When we were notified last year of ZPrincess being euthanized, a group of us gave to Horse Charities. I gave to Trott USA and Old Friends that day. Yesterday I gave to Trott USA again in Memory of ZPrincess. Maybe her LEGACY will be to Save horses and other animals. Ann Moss in the letter to everyone asked for all to give something back. I hope and Pray that ZPrincess has given her life for the better good. So, on the anniversary of her birthdate, lets give whatever we can to the Charity of your choice in her Memory. LOTS OF HUGS

I can’t imagine how it hurt to lose this filly! I’m crying and I never even met her. I wish I could give everybody who loved her a hug, especially her “mommy,” Ann!
It does make me think of all the wonderful animals who aren’t so loved, who aren’t well-treated – they deserve so much better from us.
We’ll never know why certain things happen, why bad things happen to beautiful people, beautiful creatures. But, we can try to make things better for the people and animals in our world, as much as possible, for as long as we can.
My downstairs neighbor is an inspiration. She cares for the birds out back. Our little yard is an oasis in all this concrete, a stone’s throw from the ‘el, surrounded by parking lots that used to be pretty little yards, but when they “condo”ed” the neighborhood they dug everything up to make parking spots. We, and our next door neighbor, have the last little yards on the block. There’s a big maple out back and a gigantic blue spruce, a real “tree of life,” where all the little birds hide from the hawk and chatter and sing. We get cardinals, mourning doves, sparrows, finches, in the summer the radiant little goldfinches come to visit the sunflowers that sprout every year from the seeds my neighbor “accidentally” spills when she fills the feeders. There are bunnies, possums; one summer we had a family of raccoon who came at night and played in the moonlight and washed their paws in the birdbath. There is a pair of cardinals, the male glowing like a ruby; red-winged blackbirds; one day I saw a shadow among the branches of the maple, and when I looked up I saw a pair of tiny woodpeckers.
They all come to this little garden because my neighbor stretches her tiny budget to buy them seeds and goes out at dawn, throughout the brutal winter, and hangs her feeders, and changes the frozen water in their bowls. The landlord plants milkweed, and the butterflies come, great Monarchs, on their way to Mexico.
May Z Princess find her wings in heaven. I guess I have to believe that, otherwise it makes no sense. I hope we all get to meet her there! and see once more, all the lovely animals we’ve loved and lost.
shirleeinindy
Sophia,
God bless you and your neighbor for this oasis of nature in the middle of a concrete jungle. People here fuss about the critters never thinking that their homes were destroyed by developments. If you move into an area that has wildlife, remember they did not invite you to live there!

I would like to ask Ann Moss if there is some kind of Charity that could be set up in Memory of ZPrincess? I am hoping that there can be some way to HELP Thoroughbreds in need in ZPrincess’s name. So Many Horses are in need, off the track and the Wild Horses out West. Can this be done? Thank You, Alex

You can always make a donation to any of the many charities that rescue, retire, and/or rehome Thoroughbreds, or to another equine charity (any charity, really). Just tell them that it is in memory of Z Princess.

What a beautiful tribute to Princess Z! Love the idea of doing something for a human or an animal in her memory. She was one very special young filly.
I agree it would be nice to have a formal memorial to Princess Z by helping other horses using her name.
Congrats Queen Elizabeth on your 89th birthday….saw a picture of her riding her Fell pony. I believe I am getting to an age where a Fell pony might be right for me. (Don’t tell
me 16 hand Quarter horses I said that).

SallyB.(AuntiecherishesZandheryoung)
Hi all; This past Sunday with my arrival to do chores and feed our horses at the sanctuary, after preparing their feed, I looked out for Fancy and Frito as the pastures are greening up nicely now. (Jo can no longer go out and graze or she will founder again)
I could not see Frito so I walked through a stall out to the pasture and there Frito was laying. I spoke gently to him and he attempted to get up but he could not. Frito tried twice. OMG!! I jogged, and at my age my bones do not like this, to get my cell phone and make calls to the head volunteers and Dave to come.
We desperately worked with ropes to help Frito get up. Liz even called her husband to run over as he is a big strong guy. It must have been Frito’s time at age 32, because although he wanted to, his back end and legs failed him. We called our vet to come and either help us get him up or euthanize. She had been at an emergency so she would be a while.
Frito was humanely euthanized and at least was not suffering. Although it was difficult to have him pass, I was glad that I was there to comfort him, to softly stroke him along with Liz and Sarah. Frito did not die out there in the pasture alone.
Fancy had sniffed at Frito and Frito snickered to Fancy, and then Fancy turned and left walking away earlier. That must have been their final goodbyes.
We are now down to two horses, Jo and Fancy and two goats Brownie & Blackie. It is heartbreaking to see this dwindling down in size. I do have to remind myself when I signed up this was a sanctuary for the older horse that otherwise would have been euthanized. I believe that Sir met up with Frito to show him the way.
Thank you for being here.
hugs, Sally B

Dear Sally B.,
I am so sorry about sweet Frito. It is comforting to know that you were with him and that others were there to help him, too. He was surrounded by caring people and didn’t have to die alone and un-noticed. Although he had a long life, it is hard to lose him, I know. Give extra love to Fancy and Jo, and of course to the goats, too. Memories will help soothe the heart. Frito and Sir are safe and healthy now. RIP dear Frito
