The unthinkable just happened at Churchill. So unfortunate, Maximum Security was clearly the best horse in the race. I guess rules are rules and the playback did indicate that he impeded the race of War of Wills. He ran his heart out and was out front all the way. I am sad for the horse and his connections. In my opinion, he is still a winner and has a great future ahead of him.
If he had beaten Country House by only a nose or it had been a photo I could see where Maximum Security might have impeded him. Think we have not heard the end of this by a long shot. I agree, it takes a lot of the pleasure out of the Derby.
Absolute shocker. I can’t understand why MS was place 17th in order of finish. Have never seen that kind of penalty in a disqualification before. Waiting for race notes to be up on Equibase. Feel so sorry for Maximum Security. Good thing is he doesn’t realize he didn’t win.
Congrats to Country House and his connections. Hope they all came back OK and Maximum Security gets to go again in the Preakness. Love that boy; family of Zenyatta. Love and Hugs, JB
I believe that the penalty was not for impeding Country House, but for almost causing War of Will to clip heels. Even Bill Mott said that Country House wasn’t bothered that much. Nobody won here. Very sad for Maximum Security and his connections, but not a happy win for Country House et al. either. A real let down for lots of folks.?
It was quite a shocking ruling indeed. I agree, Sandy, that the penalty was for the near-miss with War of Will caused when Maximum Security crossed into the next lane and that Country House won by default (even though his jockey and not War of Will’s was the one who filed the objection). I agree, also, that nobody won here — very distressing outcome for everyone, I think.
I was so happy for Maximum Security, Luis Saez, trainer Jason Servis and owners Gary & Mary West. Bummer!! This leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Hi, Everyone,
My heart goes out to Gabriel Saez, Jason Servis, Maximum Security and their team.
I am upset with the results of the Derby winner as well. Maximum Security clearly deserved to win!
Marshall hit on the nose for me-why was Maximum Security disqualified when the jockey of the War of Will did not file an objection? WOW was the horse who just missed clipping heels and going down. Country House was not affected enough that he was clearly impeded enough that he would have won if this didn’t happen. Also, Maximum Security spooked from the noise of the crowd-this was not done deliberately. Did Flavien Prat want to win so badly that he filed an objection that wasn’t warranted?
I don’t think that Bill Mott was happy winning this way. I bet the win is bittersweet to him and others on Country House’s team.
I wonder if the stewards came to the decision they did because of all of the flack about the safety of horse racing lately. Did they want to show that they would not tolerate any possibility of injury when WOW just missed going down? If WOW had gone down & caused a chain reaction with others going down as well, then I would agree with the decision. The fact that Maximum Security was placed last seems extreme to me; usually a horse is only placed down a few spots.
On the flip side, congratulations to Code of Honor on his 2nd place finish. I was happy that he did so well for Mr. Farish. Lane’s End takes such wonderful care of Zenyatta & all of the other horses there that I would have enjoyed seeing Code of Honor winning.
Ann NC
Head scratcher for sure??!! Agree Marshall, will be hard getting that bad taste out of our mouths. Anyway….. get your Preakness on!! Make me proud MD peeps!!!❤️?
Dear Judy.We have different rules over here.If a winner is seen to interfere with a horse he will keep the race if the other horse has no chance of winning. How they could cope in that slop amazes me.Everyone is going mad on social media MS was the clear winner. We have the fillies tomorrow!Goodnight God bless you LM PC HT and all the sweeties.Love and hugs SheenaX
I really think the field is too large for the race to run without bumping, brushing or worse. I’m holding my breath every year for these babies to get through safely. Used to be a field of 14. Although bad things can happen in less crowded fields, maybe limiting to 14 might be a good thing. I believe that is the limit on entries for the Preakness and the Belmont too. Love and Hugs, JB
shirleeinindy
Judy,
I agree 20 horses are too many. It is not safe and I am afraid that someday there will be a terrible accident. I cannot agree with the steward’s Derby decision but we are not able to see all the shots that they did and talk to all the riders. I feel that if any one claimed foul it should have been the jock of WOW.
Judy Berube
Dear Shirlee:
I know. I just read an article where Mark Casse, WOW’s trainer, said he and jockey Gaffalione decided against filing an objection because they weren’t in contention, so they didn’t do it. He said if WOW was in contention for 3rd or 4th, they would have. Love and Hugs, JB
Thanks for posting the Equibase notes. I can’t believe this played out the way it did. The most affected jockey/s didn’t file the objection, but MS was not only DQ’d but moved to last! This was Maximum Security’s win, and he will always be the best horse in this Derby.
Oh, what a world!
I found an explanation for why MS was placed 17th. The rule is the disqualified horse is place behind the horse he interfered with. War of Will finished 16th so Max Sec was placed 17th right behind him. Thank God that WOW didn’t go down when he and Max almost clipped heels. We have to be very thankful for that. I do think that MS is a very special boy. He was valiant today and he took some brushes and bumps too. Love and Hugs, JB
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Actually, it was Long Range Toddy (the second horse interfered with) who finished 16th, hence the 17th placing for Max. What was not immediately reported is that LRT’s jockey also filed an objection. Think we have to remember that there would be a different (and much worse) conversation going on today if WOW had gone down because of the interference. It’s just a very sad situation all around, but it appears that the stewards followed the US rules which are different from those used in other countries.
Judy Berube
Dear Sandy:
You’re so right. I checked and WOW finished 8th and was pushed up to 7th with the DQ. Max was placed after LRT. In any event, I’m sad for Max and grateful that all of them came back safe. LRT’s jockey, Jon Court, did file an objection. WOW’s jockey, Tyler Gaffalione, did not. Love and Hugs, JB
I feel very bad about Maximum Security losing that way, I bet on him.
But I also bet on Country House a lot of money so I think I was lucky because
they DQ’d Maximum Security.
Sorry but horse racing is horse racing.
Love and hugs Ingrid.
In an effort to find some Derby Day joy, I went back to the Distaff Turf Mile won by Beau Recall. Her sir is Sir Prancealot an Irish horse. Everytime I see his name I have to laugh.
Hi Everyone, I am one of the one’s just heartbroken that Max was Disqualified.I don’t think it was deliberate. I had him also to win. And, the money is not important. I just still do not have a good feeling about it. But, am so so happy no one got hurt.
Don’t know if I will ever forget this. He was just the best horse, even Jerry and Randy said it. These 3 year olds are still babies and learning. I have never been hit in the stomach but his loss yesterday was about what i would have thought it would feel like.
Just would love to be there to give Max lots of hugs and kisses.
I so hope Max does run in the Preakness if he is sound. Not for revenge, but just to win again like I know he can, But, there is a but no matter what horses go to Baltimore they are going to run into a Monster in Alwaysmining.
So hope Maximum Security goes to the Preakness and Belmont. I’m pulling for ya wherever your at. Love Ya.
When you stuff 19 very fit, very aggressive, very competitive 3yo colts into a starting gate after leading them through throngs of people ; when you release this overcrowded group with very determined riders onto a track lined up with overflowing crowds of screaming fans; when you endure hours of phrases like ‘greatest 2 minutes in sport’s’ or ‘dream come true’, does anyone really think there will be no jostling, shuffling, rough moments and traffic issues involved. Does anyone really believe that the Derby is a tame race?
Does Churchill Downs think they have provided a completely safe set up? Maybe it is time for the KD to lose some of its significance.
I love horses and I am devastated whenever a horse is injured and I believe the sport needs to be made as safe as possible.I believe that intentional or inexperienced dangerous riding should be penalized. I am not saying that happened here. I am thankful no one was injured. But, it will never be a completely safe enterprise.
No one was a winner this year. Maximum Security was obviously the best horse in the race and was denied his place in history alongside the other 144 elite horses of KD winners. His connections lost their rightful place not least among who was his young sire.
Another hard day of racing. No wonder Coz wanted to be a jumper instead. Smart mom, smart son.
Thank the horse racing gods that everyone came out of the 2019 Kentucky Derby safe & sound. That, to me at least, “trumps” any objections you might have about the declared winner…
And speaking of horse & rider safety, Zenyatta fans might take at look at The Horse Racing Integrity Act of 2019 (just google it). This is legislation put together by Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) of Saratoga and Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) of Lexington. If you were watching the NBC Derby coverage yesterday, you would have heard both Jerry Bailey and Randy Moss endorsing the formation of Federal racing regulations.
If you read through the Act’s proposals and agree with them, please contact your local Representative (if you don’t know his/her name, you can google it). They all have an easy way to email them with your comments. Tell him/her that you support The Horse Racing Integrity Act of 2019 (H.R.1754) and urge them to support it, too.

After watching America’s Day at the Races at Belmont on MSG+ today and hearing Tyler Gafflione talking on the phone with the commentators of the show about the Derby, I now agree with the stewards’ decision. Tyler said that he did not claim foul because two jockeys already had & the stewards were reviewing the race. I am still sad for Max and his team, though.
In the past, Maximum Security would & not have been DQ’ed because it was the Derby and not just an every day race. While we were waiting for the decision, I remember someone saying that Max would be taken down if it was a low level claiming race.
Max’s drifting out did definitely did compromise War of Will’s chances of passing him; it also impacted some of the other horses. On the replays that were shown today, you could see that WOW was behind Max and full of run and was just starting toward an opening that Max’s move not only closed, but almost caused WOW to go down. IT also cost WOW any chance of placing higher than he did in the race. Tyler said that it was pure luck that WOW stayed on his feet.
Rich Migliore, a former jockey, was one of the commentators today & he did not agree with the decision at first. When Rich was riding, the jockeys had an unwritten agreement that they would not “cry foul” in such a big race. After listening to the discussion with the other commentators and watching the race again, Rich seemed to think that the stewards’ decision was the correct one.
This type of decision should be made more often to increase the safety of racing. Just because the race is a Classic Stakes Race, should not affect the stewards from DQ’ing a horse. Remember how Angel Cordero used to get away with things like pinning other horses & riders against the rail to keep them from winning?
A comment was also made that jockeys are suspended a lot more than the public is informed of. The jockeys are suspended, but the order of placing stays the same. I wish that I could show everyone a replay of this show because what was said seemed reasonable to me.
I’m sorry to ramble on like this and I probably don’t remember everything that was said. I originally disagreed with the stewards, but now that I’ve heard different views of the situation, I now agree with them.
I do respect everyone else’s opinion and will not think any less of you for it. I’m just happy that everyone seems to have come out of the Derby OK & will have other chances to show how good they are.
Donna. I really appreciate your post, especially the last paragraph. Respect, as well as accountability, is so lacking in most social media venues. This is the only social media site i have and I find the people here are so kind and supportive of each other.
I do think it was a bad call, but I totally respect anyone who sees it differently. isn’t it a good thing that we can agree to disagree, respect each other and know that it is finally our love for horses that is what we hold in common? Isn’t it the idea that we can post and discuss without fear of being censored or labeled with an ‘ist ‘ because we don’t agree?
This has been a good discussion and I am thankful to everyone about how it has been handled. And I know we’d are all thankful no one was hurt!
Donna, thanks for sharing your thoughts and the gist of the interview you heard. Mr. West, owner of Max, was on the Today Show this morning. He said Max will not be going in the Preakness. He stated there was no need to push him to race on two weeks rest when he will not be going for the Triple Crown.
I love this horse so much and believe that, God willing he stays healthy, he’ll come back and maybe win the Belmont, Travers and BCC. I hope he does and gets Horse of the Year. To me he has shown courage, heart, determination and the will to win and is a true warrior.
Shame he had to be taken down as the winner of the Derby, but he can come back strong and find his place in the record books as a Champion. Love and Hugs, JB

Thanks for sharing this, Donna. Just a tough, tough situation all around ?

Dear Donna Z, Sandy, Kathleen and Z Fans:
