2007 Belmont Stakes – Rags To Riches
Published on Jun 18, 2012
No, it did not start well for Rags to Riches, or for that matter the filly’s jockey, John Velazquez, or her trainer, Todd Pletcher. She stumbled out of the gate for the 139th running of the Belmont Stakes, and for a heart-in-your-throat moment, Velazquez and Pletcher had a simultaneous and bitter thought: Why did we do this? Why did we run this girl against the boys when history told us it was foolish?
Two minutes later, however, Velazquez had Rags to Riches eyeball-to-eyeball with the Preakness champion, Curlin, and Pletcher was on his feet in a clubhouse box, his heart thumping in his chest, his voice uncharacteristically growing louder.
“Come on, baby! Come on, baby! Come on, baby!” Pletcher cried, his voice growing more urgent with every stride.
He is a placid man by nature, and a humbled one when it comes to Triple Crown races. He has been the nation’s leading trainer three years running, but before yesterday he had saddled 28 horses in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont, and had not visited the winner’s circle.

Keta Note: This is the complete package. The pre-race interviews & horse profiles, an excellent graphic of the Belmont track with a comparison to Derby and Preakness, the race, and the post-race award & interviews. Good prep for the upcoming Belmont.

Thank you, Keta! This is marvelous! High hoof to Rags to Riches, who ran like a girl!
Terry Crow
Thank you. Keta for this very complete account of Rags to Riches victory in the Belmont. I might have missed it, but what plans did Pletcher and/or the owner have for this magnificent Filly after the Belmont? She only made one other start in her racing career and it took three months to get her ready for that one. If that was the plan, fine. Otherwise, running her in the Belmont did not turn out to be a wise decision.
Keta
Terry,
Michael Tabor said they hoped to run her in the Alabama and then the Classics
at the end of the year.
Last start was the Gazelle at Belmont on Sept. 15, 2007. Rags finished 2nd.
It was in the Gazelle that she got the hairline fracture that eventually caused
her to be retired.

2007 Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches retired
Mike Welsch | Daily Racing Form March 26, 2008,
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. — Rags To Riches, the champion 3-year-old filly in 2007, has been retired, trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed Monday.
Rags to Riches, who defeated Horse of the Year Curlin to win the 2007 Belmont Stakes, was sidelined by a hairline fracture in her right front pastern suffered during the Gazelle Stakes at Belmont on Sept. 15. The Gazelle was her only defeat in six career starts.
Rags to Riches, who is owned by Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith, returned to training with Pletcher at Palm Beach Downs earlier this winter and was scheduled to have her third work Tuesday.
“It’s the same injury, a hairline P1 fracture, and it just looked like it wasn’t going to hold up,” Pletcher said. “I wasn’t happy with the way she galloped yesterday [Sunday], we took some additional X-rays, and after discussing the situation with Mr. Tabor, we agreed it wasn’t worth the risk of continuing on with her.”
Pletcher said Rags To Riches will be bred to Giant’s Causeway later this spring.

Hollywood Park: Stevens takes day off after spill
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form Updated on 06/02/2013 4:59PM
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens took off his mounts at Betfair Hollywood Park on Sunday, a day after being unseated in a turf race.
Stevens, who is booked to ride Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes in New York, was scheduled to have two mounts Sunday.
He worked one horse Sunday morning but said he was “pretty sore” and chose not to ride. Later in the morning, Stevens, 50, said he went to a hospital near Santa Anita for precautionary X-rays on his ribs.

A Poem for Susan in TN
(June 2, 2013)
Dearest Susan, looking back in review,
It’s been now a year
To the day,
Since so sadly you
Had to say adieu
To Chester,
Your dear pony rescue.
You lost treasured dogs, too.
Then as heartache inside you did fester,
You yourself from view
Did disappear.
To us, Susan, you are still very dear.
We hold you in our heart
And pray
That the day is near
When you’ll again start
To let us from you hear.
Terry Crow
This is most appropriate, Trina. Susan in TN was/is a valued member of this blog and we all miss her. Susan-Come back soon.

Was at Churchill Saturday. A lot of scratches because of the rain but did see one absolutely magnificent colt out of First Samurai-Greenery by Galileo owned by Claibourn and Ms. Dischneider. I spotted him in the walkover. He was strutting his stuff and acted as if he knew he was special. He won going away in what looked to be a hand ride. The race was moved off the turf to the muddy dirt track and 4 of the 8 entered scratched. Derby Kitten was one of the scratches. Really wanted to see him.
If any of you are going to Churchill, be sure and get a seat in the Matt Wynn dining room. Good food and service.

The 2013 Belmont Stakes is shaping up to be one of the wildest horse races of the season, and despite the third straight year of no contender for the Triple Crown, the importance of this race is indisputable.
This will be the 145th edition of the prestigious American race, and the third leg of the Triple Crown is shaping up to be the most exciting race of them all.

This is a video of a historic win by Z’s great grandfather Roberto and Big D’s daddy, when Roberto outran Brigadier Gerard at York. It was the Brigadier’s only loss. Pundits said that Roberto ran from the starting gate like a bat out of hell. He had been abandoned by Lester Piggott who chose instead to ride Rheingold, the horse who was second by a nose to Roberto in the Epsom Derby. Roberto’s owner brought in a US jockey who had never ridden in the UK. Roberto against the odds won in his usual determined way. Check out Roberto’s ears. Look familiar? Same blaze too. He even runs like Z. Similar stride. A great, great horse.

Ann NC. Roberto, Z’s great grandfather, was named by his owner after the baseball player, Roberto Clemente. John Galbreath also owned the Pittsburgh Pirates. Roberto Clemente was not only a great baseball player, but a great humanitarian. He was killed in a plane crash while on his way to do charity work in Nicaragua.
Terry Crow
Clemente was a great player. Ended his career with exactly 3000 hits. Of course, when he ended his last season with that total no one thought that would be the final tallyl.

dear max no one over here will ever forget kauto laura is a very lucky girl!!!loved the videos of Roberto certainly takes me back a few years was a shock to see the mighty brigadier beaten we were all a bit nervous when they decided to run frankel in what’s now known as the juddmonte in case the same fate befell him but of course!!!there’s a good resemblance between Zenyatta and Roberto she inherited his talent and more. am waiting news about moose!! hugs sheena
Max
Sheena. Kauto’s very funny. A guy tweeted him about how it must be hard to type with hooves. Kauto replied that the guy must have missed the news of how many iPhones that he’s already smashed. I think that he’s also gone through iPads.
Roberto has not received the praise that he’s due. Winning by that much against a major generational star like Brigadier Gerard is a huge achievement. No other horse could do it. He’s also a great sire. In addition to Dynaformer, he’s father to Kris S, Z’s dam sire. There’s talent and stamina in that line. The Brits are always eager to have that bloodline in their horses, along with AP Indy. All very tough, long haul stamina horses. Also huge. Big D and Z are 17+ hands. Wow!

Sue Noel/Sun Valley,ID
@ Zenny’s John—A BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I’m sure it was a really wonderful day for you, with all of the exciting things happening in your life, with all of the wonderful good wishes pouring forth for you It was such a from all of the Zsters here and from friends all over the world, and ‘of course, getting to spend the day with beautiful Dottie and adorable Sophie!! And,WOW,wasn’t that poem from darling Trina the greatest ever??? Zowie!!!! It was such an amazing honor to meet you at last years’ BC Zenyatta Party ( I was the one who brought the faded black and white photos we took of your beloved War Admiral on our trip to Kentucky when I was 12 years old!) and I really hope that I will get to see you at this year’s BC!!! If you would, will you please give Ebby a pat from me when next you see her?? She is SO lovely–I hope she may be racing at Santa Anita when we are there for the BC—and–that we might be able to seeher.I was not able to make the visit to Barn 55 after last year’s race. (Of course,if she is a really busy girl this year, she will probably be running IN a Breeders Cup race!!)
@ Barnaby’s Auntie Trina–I think I need to print off your poem for John and read it to Barnaby–this poem is incredible!!! I can just see him by the fence standing quietly, listening to me read and looking as though he understands every word–I know that’s what he would do! I’ll let you know. I have never tried to print out anything from the blog. Does anyone know of it will just print out the screen you can see,or,if it will print out everything from that day?? Will try it tomorrow, after I see if there is a response to my inquiry.
Speaking of being a computer dummy—which I surely AM–JAG–I LOVED the greeting you did for John, with all the stars and hearts and things!! I’ve seen things like that on here before and have NO idea how they are done. They are terrific!
@ Karen Gogue–LOVED the beautiful tribute for Eric K.–I’m SURE he will be watching all Ebby does from above! It’s so great he was able to see her first successes!
I think Barnaby had a lot of fun this weekend. Saturday morning, after they had their grain and supplements, and,of course,a Fuji apple and a couple of carrots each,we took them for a walk–like two huge dogs on leashes! Down the road from their Aunt Rita’s,their own Summer Palace, there is a lovely wooded trail that winds along for about a mile. We just did part if it to see what they would think of it. Traveller had been riden on it last year, but Barnaby had never seen it and I wanted him to do so before I ride him out on it. Also,I had not walked him on the blacktop before that leads to the trail and I wanted to see what he thought of that. He was very interested in all of it,but not panicked by any of it–includeing the bicycle that came along, which I think was probably the first one he had ever seen! He did his “stretching up tall” thing, when he saw it,but that was all. He really is good about his reactions to new things!! After we got back to the place,I groomed him to a fare-thee-well and then tried out ONE MORE new bit—-I tried another Happy Mouth, just a soft straight apple flavored one, which he took to easily for awile and then began to fuss a bit. (As Sue says,it’s more about something that I do,rather than just the bits,as he goes well for her on a variety of bits—but then–she is all business and he minds her because she is “boss mare” and doesn’t stand for any nonsense. I don’t want him to do things for me because I MAKE him, but, rather because he is happy and wants to! There is something I do that irritates him with a bit in his mouth, that he can tolerate with just the halter. I got off of him and changed over to the halter and we had a lovely time, practicing tight turns and changes of direction, all of which he did beautifully with just his halter. I don’t know if I have ever mentioned the halter he has—I just LOVE it and he does too! It is called a Lami-Cel and it is all lined with fleece,so there is none of the heavy woven nylon touching his face–and the nose band and brow band are solid fleece, all the way around–so–it is incredibly gentle against his face. His is a lovely deep green, with a lead rope to match,so it is all lovely with his coloring. I got his through the Dover catalog, don’t know where else they carry them, but,I think they are great! After I unsaddled him,we had the sweetest time,I was standing next to him and put my arms around his neck, standing right in front of him, crossing them over his mane and leaning against him.He rested his head on my shoulder as I talked to him, telling him what a good boy he had been and how much I love him. He did not mind being “trapped” by my arms and just stood there as long as I wanted to–amazing,I thought, and so very sweet. I DO love himSO!!
Love and wishes for a lovely night to all they Z family from me–and from Barnaby!!

Unlimited Budget Will Get Her Shot at History
By Frank Angst, The Blood-Horse Updated: Monday, June 3, 2013 6:32 PM
Filly Unlimited Budget will take on males in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) Sat., June 8 at Belmont Park where she will be saddled by the only living trainer to win the 1 1/2-mile race with a filly–Todd Pletcher.
In 2007 Rags to Riches became the first filly in more than 100 years to win the Belmont, when Pletcher saddled the A.P. Indy filly to a narrow victory over Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner and eventual two-time Horse of the Year Curlin . On June 3 owner Mike Repole said he gave Pletcher the go-ahead to enter Unlimited Budget in the Belmont Stakes.

devastating disease of addiction. We pray Lord that you would intercede
in their lives an flood their eyes with light. So that they can know
and understand the hope to which You have called them. Give them
strength and courage to be truthful, take away their fears, insecurities,
and anxieties. Send your word God to heal them. Heal their broken
hearts and wounds so they care for themselves rather than rescue

Fill their hearts with your word, for your word is the life to all who find

Ooooops!! What a lot of typos in that long message! I got interrupted by a customer when I was writing the first part to John& got mixed up when I went back to continue. Therefore,I somehow inserted the phrase It was such a” in the middle of a sentence!! I wasn’t able to proofread the whole thing as,when I finished it and tried to submit it ,having forgotten to proof it, it did not seem to transmit. I pushed submit again and then it detected a duplicate post. Then,it was time to close up shop and go home,so I just left the whole thing for this morning. I went in again without looking at the post I had minimized and saw that it had,in fact, worked the first time after all. Whew–I had hoped not to have to type the whole thing again! Anyway, sorry about all the typos!
@ Barnaby’s Auntie Trina- Thanks for the instructions on how to print from the blog. I have never understood how to copy and paste. Will try it this evening, just before I go home. My home computer is still down because I can’t get a signal to the monitor. Guess I’ll have to take the monitor to the computer place and have it tested to see if it is dead. When I have to replace my computer,I am going to do it mwith aq Mini iPad!! I looked at one when I was down for the BC—my daughter is a MAC whiz par excellance and assures me that there is a wireless gizmo that will let the iPad connect to the printer . If so,that’s all I will need. Don’t know when this will all happen–guess it will depend on when or whether I can get my monitor going again. Can’t bear to think about how many e-mails will be backed up if I ever get to look!!!
Boss Mare Sue found a place to order large bottles of the only spray we can use on Barnaby. It is called TRi-Tec and is 37.00 a bottle of 24 oz. or so!! If we use anything else on him,he breaks out in little bumps!! Now we have enough to last him quite awhile—Traveller will use up the other kinds we have and then switch over to the kind he uses. She has to have it wiped on her as she is afraid of the squirt bottle! Sue sprayed him the other day with his stuff and found that,Ias I had mentioned last year, she really COULD just approach him in the pasture and spray him right there and then put some down in his ears with a little cloth. He will stand there very patiently–he seems to just assume that what ever we want to do to him must be something nice!! He is SO trusting,it is just amazing!! I want to make certain that no one ever abuses that trust!! The only bad thing about their “summer palace” is that there are a lot of flies there,as it is next to the east fork of the Big Wood River.
Can’t wait for the Belmont–I have a concert late in theafternoon, really more early evening I guess. We are supposed to deliver food for the recertion afterwards by 4:30–that will niot happen for me,as I’m not leaving home before the race!! Hope Gary S. is good to go–was sorry to learn he had another spill—hate to see that–just love him–almost as much as dear Mikey!!
Happy Day All–have to go out and shop for a couple of home deliveries–yes–we do those!!

Thanks for another super post, Sue! I can feel your pain when you thought you might have to type your long post again. Once you get the hang of Copy and Paste, you can avoid those worries by typing your text in a Word document (and saving it), then copying and pasting it into the Comment box. That way if something goes wrong, you still have your text without retyping it.

What a sad and touching article that is. Such a senseless shooting for a young cop. His beautiful partner paying his respects brought a tear to my eye. Dogs are much better people than we are……we can never match their love and loyalty. hugs

Dear Sue,
I agree with you that dogs are much better people than we are. I am always in awe of their matchless love and lasting loyalty. Their souls are pure, and their hearts are faithful. Hugs

Yes, dogs are the best. We can learn a lot from them. Love and Hugs, JB

There is a saying that is so true. I hope to become the type of person my dog thinks I am.

Dear Judy B.,
Thank you for this post. It is indeed very sad and a senseless death, but a very touching tribute from Fido to his partner and friend. Hope they capture the miserable creep(s) responsible for this murder.
Glad PC is doing well! Take care and hugs to you, Lola Mae, PC and friends.

Jason Ellis lived and died a hero, may he rest in peace. Fido’s good-bye salute was most touching. They say 2,300 flags lined the route to the cemetery–well done. Now I want to hear that the perpetrator has been caught.

What a history making event the Belmont Stakes would be if Unlimited Budget w/Rosie aboard WON!!!!???!! Wowee! What a thrill that would be! Wishing all good luck and safe trips.
Hope all Zsters are doing well today.
Red prince and Zenyatta are enjoying their paddock friends and he must be learning to play colt games with his friend. Coz must still be with the herd of boys getting stronger and faster and more handsome each day. Love you all.

Dear Sheena:
Yes, so sad for the family.
Glad the Queen’s celebration went well. Wow, a new Prince or Princess soon.
Love Kauto.
Have a good night. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Sheena,
So glad that the weather was lovely today for the 60th anniversary of the coronation. The Queen looked very nice (as always), and Prince Phillip was able to be there by her side. Queen Elizabeth II has served her country exceedingly well. All the best to her and the royal family.
Cheers and Hugs

Love that Kate! Hope all goes well for her and the little one.

Sheena. The Queen Elizabeth did look well. She has the best hats. Only regret was the Rolls instead of the Coronation coach with her horses.

Agree that Mr. Commons looks good. I hate to say it, but I believe that this horse has underachieved. Maybe he will like it in the east better than he did California. The talent is there.
Pati-10 days to graduation
Terry, I agree with you. Mr. C has had the misfortune of running into freak closers, Wise Dan, Animal Kingdom, and a few other monsters of racing that frequented California and the BC. Maybe now, he can have his break-out performance and get the major confidence booster he needs. Plus, I might get to see him. :-D

Pati-Is 10 days an accurate figure?
Pati-9 days to graduation
Terry, yes. I have counted them, and I am on track now. It’s a count-down, so it’s on 9 now.
I forgot how to count momentarily, and was off by a few days earlier, but I’m back on track now. :-)
