Coolmore Updates on St. Nicholas Abbey Sat. July 27 2013
St Nicholas Abbey has made positive progress and is in good form today following yesterday’s colic surgery.
The colic was caused by caecal shutdown (equivalent to the human appendix), which is an extremely painful condition.
His treatment means he cannot have food for a prolonged period – this is difficult for a horse like St Nicholas Abbey who loves his food!
He will get parentral nutrition instead (intravenous nutrition) to fulfill his daily requirements.
Dr Nathan Slovis a medicine specialist from the Hagyard Institute in Kentucky arrived today to oversee his ongoing recovery and treatments.
All surgeons are pleased with the progress he is making with his pastern reconstruction and he is taking weight on the leg well
Max
Seeing these photos together makes you realize again how remarkably good looking Z and her boys are. It’s a pleasure to see them.

Dear Z Family,
SHERR is in need of new clippers. Our pair is so old that they barely even clip anymore. The handles heat up so much you can barely hold them, and we have to hold them together with duck tape. (Effective yes, but not very safe.) I beg for donations; any amount is welcome. Just put in the line that the donation is going toward “New Clippers” and make sure you let Ginny know that the Zenyatta family is sending in their donations and their love. I think that she has a very soft spot for everyone here; all horse lovers are bonded by that urge to help, regardless of what horse sport we follow.

Del Mar: Kettle Corn foils Paynter in deep stretch of San Diego (Race Replay Video)
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form 07/27/2013 9:19PM
DEL MAR, Calif. – Kettle Corn, a 6-year-old who has often been overshadowed by his rival Game On Dude in the last 18 months, won the biggest race of his career in Saturday’s $200,250 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, catching the heavily favored, and sentimental choice, Paynter in the final furlong.
Paynter, the winner of the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in July 2012 who later survived severe bouts with laminitis and colitis, finished second after leading in the stretch. Sent off at 3-5, Paynter looked like winner in the final furlong but could not hold off Kettle Corn, losing by a half-length.

Thank you, LE for the shop update and offers of new things. I’m eagerly awaiting the Zenny DVD.
Congrats to Palace Malice on his great win yesterday with Mikie. If I had a horse of my own in the races, he would be my jockey if I could afford the entrance fees, etc.
@Carol in AR–glad you had a happy birthday.
Even though he didn’t win the race, I thought Paynter looked awesome. One would be hard put to guess he is literally back from the grip of death.
Great news about St. Nick–we’re pulling for you and praying you through.
For a great start to your Sunday morning, check out this short video on Horse and Man.

Dear Barbara,
Thanks for this wonderful link! Bugaboo is definitely over the moon for her daddy!
So sweet and touching — our dogs touch us deeply. Horses touch us deeply, also, but our dogs manage to fit in our laps! Hugs

@Pati–forgot to mention that normally I would help with the clippers, but I just made a pledge to help get Sarbonne. Let us know if the funds don’t come in. Hugs.

King of the Palace
Sean Clancy THIS IS HORSE RACING Published on Saturday, 27 July 2013
Mike Smith danced through the crowd after the Jim Dandy. Already late for a plane, the California-based jockey signed autographs on the fly, posed for pictures while trying to keep moving and then stopped.
“He’s a different horse now,” Smith said. “That was a 24 first quarter and he sat off it. I was well within myself, he was very comfortable, could have went faster if need be, could have went slower if I had to.”
Amazing what three months will do.

Just saw that John and the Mosses have a horse, Mentor Cane, entered in the Amsterdam at Saratoga today. Not one of the favorites, but you never know.
Looks as if Larry Jones and Rosie have a good thing going with the fillies and mares.

Such a nice horse. Glad Gary was able to pull him up. Hopefully, he will do well in surgery and go home to WinStar and be a nice sire.

I have decided it is time to start making plans to visit Kentucky next year and visit some of the farms, or as many as I can that I have been dreaming about.
Does any of the Z family that live in the Lexington-Louisville area have suggestions on where to stay.
I know some of you have visited some of the farms recently and any input you have I would greatly appreciate.
Farms on my list: Claiborne, Lane’s End, Winstar, Gainesway, Taylor Made and Old Friends.
I know many are difficult to see during certain times of the year and I am looking at next fall like September.
shirleeinindy
Be sure to go to Three Chimneys and see Slew’s statue.
sue and tony
Make sure yoy visit the Kentucky Horse Park, too.
Barbara Wood (Texas)
Janet–you will have a great time. Debbie Godby will be thrilled. The last time we stayed at the Homewood Suites Hamburg Place and it was wonderful. That was a few years ago. You might check Trip Advisor website. Hugs.
Power up, A.P. Praying for your recovery.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio)
Janet,
I was just there in June and stayed at the Doubletree Inn and Suites. The farms are so scattered that there isn’t one optimal location, but this one worked well, and the hotel was very nice. Be sure to check about when the farms allow tours (although I would guess that fall might be OK if they aren’t getting the horses ready for a sale). Some farms allow only certain days during the week (i.e., there were places we couldn’t go on a Monday). Debbie G is a wonderful local resource. Maybe an Ohio friend could drop by at the same time :-)
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
I can’t speak to Louisville, but there are plenty of hotels and motels in Georgetown and at Newtown Pike along I-75. These are close to the Horse Park and Old Friends (about 5 miles). Everything is spread out, so you will have to have a car. The Bluegrass is a lovely area to drive through.
If you are staying in or near downtown Lexington, reserve early, as UK students will be arriving for school.
One thing to be aware of–some farms don’t host visitors during the Keeneland September yearling sale. OTOH, the sale is open to the public and is a nice destination in itself. KEESEP runs September 9-21.

consider adding Darley to your list!! I was there in June – some great stallions.
