        Carol, Believe it or not, I had tickets on all 3. Just wish I had boxed them. But made out pretty well. Just picked Golden Soul on the spur of the moment for a long shot.

        What in the world was going on with Mike and Palace Malice? Anybody heard anything? That was a few dollars I lost. First winner since Smarty and first tickets to cash since MMM.

        • The Euro Lines of Battle finished a very respectable seventh. I was very impressed with his effort. First time Lasix, first time dirt, first time mud. It was a very good effort for “first time” just about everything.

    YAY!!! I picked a Derby winner! I’m so happy I’m shaking!!! Congrats Orby!!! I love this horse! And people on twitter laughed at me when I said before his FL Derby win that he would be a huge factor in the Derby. Pati has smug look on her face. :-)

    Congrats to Orb, Shug and his owners. A long time coming.
    It would be ironic if he wins the Preakness, goes to the Belmont and a horse ruins his triple crown like Easy Goer ruined Sunday Silence’s.
    Grandson of A.P. Indy with Secretariat and Seattle Slew in his blood, here is good thoughts that the Triple Crown winner will be Orb.

      That has happened so many times before. The good news for Orb is that Belmont is his base and he has and will be training there before and after the Preakness. Also, I don’t think he should have a problem with the distance of a mile and a half in the Belmont.

      Great shot of Orb. Oh yes, kudos to both Orb and JR to perform like they did in those conditions. Wonder how many pairs of goggles JR used (you can see them hanging under JR’s chin) and poor horses just keep going with mud in their faces. I’m sure it hindered a few horses’ performance. Hugs, JB

    Great Derby. I told everyone Orb was the horse. So glad for Shug, he is such a nice man and a great trainer. Even before this Derby I was wondering if Zenyatta would be visiting Malibu Moon’s court. I think he deserves a shot, he’s always a leading stallion and AP Indy is the line soooo. Anyway, glad it was a safe race. Now on to the Preakness!

        Orb’s real birthday is 2/24 and Revolutionary 2/20. So looks like the extra month they had on some of the others mattered.

    Congrats to Orb, Shug McGaughey, Joel Rosario and the Phipps! I’m so happy for them. I’m a little biased because Shug is from Lexington, but he’s a classy guy that’s been around a long time and truly deserves this. I even won some money! I don’t care about that though. I’m just thankful that there were no injuries.

        Donna Brothers said he kicked a fense. I am supposing it happened after he left the barn. She told about it in the post parade. She said she hoped he was alright he was running in the race. I was worried about him from the get go.Hope his leg is ok.

          I thought when I heard Donna say that about Vyjack, I was thinking well surely they wouldn’t let him run if it was too bad. But, he did run.

        • The connections posted a cut he received, what looks to be, right above his hock region (don’t know the exact terminology). It may have been sustained from crashing into the gate or someone may have snagged him with a front hoof coming out. They might have an update on the Bloodhorse or the DRF tomorrow. Just have to wait and see. Here if the picture, but I’m not sure on which side it is:

          Yes that cut looks like it must have happened in the race. Now I can’t remember who they said kicked in the barn stall. Anyway one of them did. Hope that one’s leg is OK too.

        • I would think they sustained their injuries in the race since there is a vet at the starting gate to check them out before they load. Have seen them pull one out of the post parade or even right before they went in the gate.

          I just read your recent post. Yes maybe they will tell about it in Bloodhorse tomorrow. Thought it was him but one of them did kick the barn stall wall.
          I do know she said Vyjack kicked a fense.

        • It was said when Orb was in the saddling area that he was much calmer than he was at schooling. He kicked the back of the wall the day prior during practice.

          Vyjack did kick at a fence as they were heading to be loaded for the race. I believe Donna Brothers would see that since she was watching them from that view.

          Saw a blip on HRTV of Mike Smith’s interview and he was surprised that Palace Malice just took off and he could not get him reeled in no matter what he tried and did not want to attempt anything that could have possibly created more problems in a field that size.

        • Palace Malice had blinkers on for the first time on Saturday. This is often done in an attempt to improve horse’s speed. Sure worked in this case, to the detriment of the connections.

        • Blinkers were not a wise decision by TP and the owner
          Blames Mike for it. Sounds like this owner has Derby Fever
          Every year and pushes his horses to be good enough to enter
          Whrn they are not. Glad they are giving him a break and glad
          There was not a terrible accident.

    Orb, running 15th well into the race, made a late charge to win the 139th running of the mud-spattered Kentucky Derby on Saturday.
    Golden Soul was second, followed by Revolutionary.
    Late money made Orb and Revolutionary co-favorites at 6-1 at post time.
    “I was so far behind and I let him stay calm,” jockey Joel Rosario said of Orb. “Perfect trip. I stayed on the outside. I didn’t want to be too wide.”
    Trainer Shug McGaughey was overcome with emotion, breaking down as he tried to explain his joy.
    Palace Malice, ridden by veteran rider Mike Smith, broke out to a several-lengths lead about halfway through the race, the lead group tightened, and then Orb made his move.
    More than 151,000 spectators packed Churchill Downs in Louisville, where rain had fallen much of the day.
    The Derby is the first jewel of the Triple Crown. The 138th running of the Preakness, on May 18 in Maryland, is the second, followed by the Belmont Stakes, in New York on June 8.
    Only 11 horses have won the crown, none since Affirmed did in 1978.

    Live Lively, winner of the Grade 2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream, had to be euthanized Saturday morning after fracturing both sesamoids in her left foreleg at the conclusion of a workout at Belmont Park, trainer Mark Hennig said.
    Live Lively, who had finished second to Dreaming of Julia in the Gulfstream Park Oaks, was kept out of Friday’s $1 million Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs and was preparing for a start in the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan at Pimlico on May 17.

      NBC hosts talked about POE being scratched if Shug thought the ground too soft for him. I think that was the reason why. Even Wise Dan had a hard time gripping it, and he lives on yielding turf. All the updates will probably be tomorrow.

    I’ve hesitated to post because I didn’t consider it appropriate given the recent tragic events in the United States. But since Sandy, Max, Sheena, Judy and Ann have noted my absence I felt an explanation was necessary. To understand you will need to return to the Blog “April 14 Update” and seek the post from Vicki B on page 8 and my comment to that post. The “OUCH” from you, Keta absolutely stunned me – I’ve still no idea where it came from, especially since I sincerely believe I’ve been very supportive of you (and others) when unfair and unjust remarks have been posted about you. And GirlSarotoga’s reference to “a few sour grapes” was the final straw. I felt especially shattered because this site had been such a source of joy and comfort to me. And I guess I was feeling just a little smug because I was rather pleased with my posts on the developing story of Black Caviar’s retirement. But your remarks certainly put me in my place. Over the time I’ve been on this site I’ve been so impressed with the strength and courage various folk have shown when life has thrown a nasty one. But for my own very personal reasons I don’t have that strength. I just want all good things for the magical Zenyatta and her current and future foals, and blessings to Team Zenyatta, Mr and Mrs Moss, Lane’s End and of course America.

      Kathy – glad to see you back. As you’ve noticed, we were worried, and although I’m glad to conclude that your physical health is OK, I’m sorry for the distress. I was part of the conversation you reference, and some day you might take another look to see that you were getting quite a bit of support for a comment that was simply misunderstood.     Congrats to Orb, Shug, his owners and handlers for an outstanding Derby! With his owners we don’t have to worry about this Kentucky Derby winner being sold to Japan. And perhaps we’ll have a legimate chance for a Triple Crown winner. Orb has all the right tools if lady luck and good health stay in his corner.
    What was Mikey thinking with Palace Malice on that type of track with those early fractions?
    Wise Dan is something special, what a great champion. Just love seeing him run on any type of surface! He is in the right hands, that put him first. Only wish there were more owners and trainers like Dan’s and Orb’s.

      I didn’t check the reports so I would say that Palace Malice did not act this way when he was worked with his new blinkers. Stuff happens, though.

      Perhaps he was thinking to avoid the mud in his (PM’s) face. There’s always the lurking memory of Zenny running almost blind, coming from behind on a not-as-bad track. Maybe he will talk about what his strategy was.
