Harzand Gives Aga Khan Fifth Epsom Derby Win
By Frank Angst The Blood-Horse June 4 2016
The Aga Khan homebred Harzand moved to the lead in mid-stretch of the Investec Epsom Derby (Eng-I) and fought off a challenge from US Army Ranger to win the 1 1/2-mile classic June 4 at Epsom Downs.
Jockey Pat Smullen picked up his first Epsom Derby win after delivering a well-timed move, opening a clear advantage when passing Idaho in midstretch, and then fending off runner-up US Army Ranger, the 7-2 favorite, for a 1 1/2-length victory in the £1,545,000 ($2.25 million) classic, the most lucrative race ever run in Great Britain.

Per Bloodhorse.com Kent Desormeaux (spelling?) Exaggerator’s jockey has gone into an alcohol treatment center until June 9. Not good. Wonder what Gary Stevens is doing next Saturday. I have read that he had an alcohol problem in the past but did not realize he did now. Wish him the very best and hope he can get well. Does present a problem for the owners of The Big E.

This issue never goes away. You can only hope to control it. It’s a daily battle. If he’s out by June 9, he could still make the race.

This is really a rarity because She’s Lovely broke her Maiden by being the only horse in this race. This was her fifth start giving her 1 win, 1 second and 1 third. Love and Hugs, JB

Faithful Zenyatta Supporter
Well, I was screaming so loud during Beholder’s fantastic race, the cat ran off! She and Gary are so beautifully in sync with the hand ride. She looked a bit eager to get it on in the post parade then calmed down. Ok, now on to the boys once again.

May the racing gods be with you tomorrow, Ziconic. The longer distance should help you have enough time to pass everyone else. I will be sure to watch & you will be able to hear me rooting for you all the way from NY state. Stay safe & enjoy yourself, my gorgeous red hunk!

Beholder have good long rest, Zi 31C 88F very hot,, dont use much whip coming from second turn,, dont drink water after race, only wet nose,, cool neck back croup shoulders glidely with not big amount of water, walk two hours with Mario, wait when you will be not hot and lil lower tired, then drink clean water and have bath, say to race mates too :-)
andrej
Zi dont stumble in gate, break like Coz and horse at right side of him in google ” youtube Cozmic one racing debut of Zenyatta’s first foal ” , Zi all race keep long free space in front of your nose for not to make quick slowing or lil quick turns on full gallop speed of 35 38 mph on dry hard course, keep quiet mooving in first turn, on back stretch breeze at right side of herd, keep quiet mooving in second turn, Zi all race feel your health and all four your legs, if something, even lil, is not well, very glidely decrease speed, on home stretch breeze on your own speed, after finish line decrease speed very glidely, i worry about your thin legs, take in calculation that you are lower height horse than Coz and Zenny and your store of energy is lil lower than their store of energy, ,, ,,

June 5 Cherokee Devotional
Except after a rain, the summer creek flows slow and easy. A low-hanging tree floats its leaves in the water and a good-sized crawdad piles up a circle of mud as he digs a hole in the wet bank. Little eddies twirl inside the arm of a dead limb lying at the water’s edge, and water bugs skate where the water is calm. This is where Grandpa used to call the owls-he was so good at it they didn’t know he wasn’t another owl. Here a copperhead bit my cousin, and here we fished hour upon hour, catching nothing but sun perch. A flood washed in an old wooden boat, flat bottomed and without oars. But we knew how to make do, and the old boat sparked our imagination as we created wonderful adventures. Going to the creek may not have produced anything tangible, but the peace of mind and relaxation we experienced there were invaluable.
Six years ago I had the pleasure of making peace with you.

JudyB. It’s hard to say from a distance. Ziconic most closely resembles Wise Dan in build and desire. He’s still a baby and has yet to come into his own. Maturity might help him. Ziconic however is not built to be a closer. Dan was always kept just off the pace before he was let loose. Zenyatta is a huge horse with a magnificent, long stride which allowed her to make up ground from very far back. She also had the instinct to pick off each hose with just enough effort to win. That kind of talent in a horse is as rare as Russian alexandrite. However, we must not give up on Red. He’s only beginning. He is an impossibly good looking chestnut. Keep going, Ziconic.
Judy B from Rhode Island
Dear Max:
I agree with you totally. Z has long legs and a great stride that can make up lots of ground in no time, which she proved over and over again. COZ is built more like her. ZI is not. I think, as you said, a quicker break that will get him positioned third or fourth at the start and not having to make of lengths from behind the pack should do the trick for him. He has the turn of foot. He is absolutely magnificent looking. COZ, although a totally different conformation, is magnificent looking too. Praying for racing success for both of them. I know they can do it. Love them forever. Love and Hugs, JB
Max
Agree. Ziconic is a late developer like momma. He just has to start using the running style of his father or the Danimal. Being a closer is not for him unless he suddenly grows overnight to 17 hands. It’s not altogether impossible. Uncle Mo did it.
