Not only does Sergio de Sousa keep Cozmic One happy and healthy at his farm, he goes out of his way to share updates with us. Here’s a glimpse into Coz’s birthday morning at De Sousa Stables.
Hi folks,
I must be channeling Rip Van Winkle. How did it get to be Sunday, and I haven’t posted this week’s Hovis diary?? Guess I was too wrapped up in trying to analyze the Derby which turned out to be a vast waste of time. Only one of my top four even made it into the money, and that was Hot Rod Charlie. Feel really bad for Essential Quality and his connections. Such a bad start makes it hard to know how he might really have fared. Oh well . . . . there’s always next year. Just glad that they all seem to have come home safely.
OK – now on to Hovis. He had a fairly uneventful week, but . . . . after this was penned, it was announced that there was something not quite right looking about an area on his . . . ummm . . . . “man parts” which might be squamous cell carcinoma. Later this week, he’s headed yet again to the horsepital where the thankfully small area will be removed. This probably won’t be done in enough time to be reported in the next diary, but I’ll keep you posted if you don’t follow him on FB. Hooves crossed!!
Dear Sandy,
Thanks for Hovis! Glad that he likes his Jimmy Choo Choo Shoos.
I hope the removal of the small squamous carcinoma goes well and completely takes care of things.
I have seen Dr. Pol and staff take care of small tumors in that sensitive area
with success. Sending good wishes and prayers for quick healing to our Hovis — long may he waft and float with light feet!
Hi Sandy! Thanks!

Poor Hovinator. Best of luck with your procedure. Always something!
Sandy,
Thanks for our Hovis report. Hope he does well and is back home from the “horspital” soon.
All the time I spent pouring over the Derby entries was a total waste of time. Next year I am going to just wait until Derby Day and throw a dart!
I keep asking myself “well, what ELSE did you have to do anyway?” but . . . I think I might be with you next year. I spent a lot of time collecting and analyzing data that did me absolutely no good!!!! My 4 horse exacta was the largest bet I have EVER made. Lesson learned, I guess. ?

Dear Sandy:
In a field that large I do believe that racing luck (good or bad) plays a huge part in the outcome. Taking nothing away from Spirit and Uncle Johnny, they had a perfect trip while some of the horses who had great past performances were bouncing off of each other right from the start. Throwing a dart sounds good to me. ???
Love and Hugs, JB

Sandy,
Some of your picks and mine were out of it very early. Like Mike said, looked like a ping pong game. Everyone running into one another. I am still not a fan of that 20 horse field. Sometimes the best horse doesn’t win. Gotta have good racing luck to win. Nothing against Medina Spirit and Johnny V.
Thanks, Judy! We can trust you to keep us up to date. I had heard a fleeting reference to his soft palate displacement and had absolutely NO idea what that meant (or what the consequences might be). SO glad to know that he’s already over it!!!
Love and hugs,

Just saw that American Pharoah and Wise Dan are going into the Hall of Fame. Can’t think of any horse that would deserve it more. Some horses just grab your heart. That was the case with AP And Wise Dan. I know Justify and Arrogate were great champions but Pharoah and Dan just touched my heart. Congrats to them and Todd.
Maybe I just missed something, but I didn’t see anything about Wise Dan. Looked to me like Pharoah was the only horse, and Pletcher was the only trainer from the list of nominees.
Dear Sandy,
Wise Dan is one of the inductees for 2020 along with Mrs. Alice Chandler and others. The induction ceremony didn’t occur last year due to COVID-19 so the 2020 class will be officially welcomed

Happy Friday everyone. As you will read, Hovis had a bit of a rough week, but I am happy to report that his Mum recently posted good news. He survived the procedure (generally intact) and is back home. Not even on restricted duty which he finds annoying. Hopefully this is an “all’s well that ends well” situation. Apparently my previous post didn’t go through. I too saw the news on Medina Spirit and while that may be true I seriously don’t believe BB did it. I’ve followed the man and his horses decades and was always impressed with the fact that if one of his horses wasn’t 100% that horse didn’t run. Appears to me that there’s a sore loser in the crowd who’s trying to frame him. Also, Birthday Greetings to ZELLDA. Here’s hoping she gets to run this year.
It does seem weird to me that BB would do this over and over again (Justify, Gamine, Charlaton, Spirit) when it’s standard procedure for horses to be tested after the race. The horses are the victims every time in any case.
I hope the powers that be will solve this and put a stop to this horrible abuse of horses.
Dear Shirlee, Martha, Ann and Judy,
This really too strange. I wonder if someone is trying to sabotage
BB’s operation. It is hard to believe that Baffert is doing this — after
all, he isn’t stupid, nor do I think he is so arrogant as to continue
doing this repeatedly. Something smells fishy.
I, too, hope this gets sorted out, the sooner the better.

Dear Judy,
This is very sweet. Apparently, their families knew each other, and the children (Katie & Trevor) played together back then. They started dating
in 2018 and had planned to marry in April 2020. COVID-19 threw a
wrench into that plan, but they did marry on December 17, 2020. Looks
as though the baby is due on December 17 — if so, that will be an exciting

What the heck is going on? I am willing to wait until all the test results are in. Good thing that we are going to have national standards for horse racing. It does not make sense to me that BB would be that stupid.
I have been wondering that myself. That building has been a feature of the City of Providence forever. It was the tallest building in the City for years and was a major RI bank called The Industrial Trust Building. Had no idea it was renamed The Spiderman Building. I will have to check it out.

judy berube
Dear Marshall:
Just found this explanation of the “Spiderman Building”. Who knew!
111 Westminster Street is commonly referred to as the “Superman Building”, due to its resemblance to the Daily Planet building in the Superman comic book. … The current building at 111 Westminster Street possibly influenced design elements seen in the Providence Place Mall’s two turrets

What the heck is going on? I am willing to wait until all the test results are in. Good thing that we are going to have national standards for horse racing. It does not make sense to me that BB would be that stupid.

Dear Barbara:
Hope they put an end to this abuse of our beloved horses. Love and Hugs, JB

Mama Falcon feeding two chicks this morning. They are the tiny little white fluff balls on the right side of Mama. Too cute!

I have a question for you: What makes it the Superman Building?
Just idle curiosity. ?

Dear Marshall:
I have been wondering that myself. That building has been a feature of the City of Providence forever. It was the tallest building in the City for years and was a major RI bank called The Industrial Trust Building. Had no idea it was renamed The Spiderman Building. I will have to check it out.

OOPs: Marshall, I’m further confusing things. It’s the “Superman” Building not The “Spiderman” Building. Ha, ha.
Don’t know why I came up with that. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy,
Thanks for the background on the Superman Building.
Ah, the Daily Planet — it must be quite a handsome building.
