Happy Oaks / Derby Week to Everyone!
Wow! It is hard to believe that it is already May! The weather is a bit nicer here this morning. It is not too hot and the rain in Lexington has stopped for the moment. Everyone in town is hoping that the weather cooperates to make it a fun and fabulous week for all of our many visitors!
My Moss Pal, ZAZU, leaves CA very early in the morning on Tex Sutton’s plane and will land in Kentucky tomorrow around 10ish. I’m wishing her a nice, relaxing flight and a very successful Oaks week. The Moss’ and Dottie will be arriving late Tuesday. I am SO excited to be able to visit with them during the next several days. They did say they were going to spend LOTS of time with ME while they are in town. This is GREAT NEWS!
How about the 60 MINUTES program which aired last night! It is interesting that many people throughout the country were able to see the segment and commented about it to all of my TEAM. In California, the last part of it was interrupted due to BREAKING NEWS! John said that they were able to see it on-line…which is terrific! I know they MISS ME!
I think 60 Minutes did a wonderful job on MY update! It is so special that they were able to show me outside in the paddock with my dear friend, Pirates Queen. The portions on MY TEAM were adorable! Just in case, you did not get to see it last night or live in CA and the segment was interrupted, I’m including the 60 Minutes Link for you! They really did a wonderful job capturing so many special moments of MY LIFE!
Enjoy!

The 60 Minutes segment on Zenyatta was also preempted in Oregon. I was SOOOO mad! While it’s a good thing that Bin Laden was killed, that news item could have been aired on the late evening news or simply run as a ticker item at the bottom of the screen (without interrupting YOUR segment). You knew it would consume the news for the next week or so anyway. I moped around until seeing the link to the CBS video when I read your diary update. I wish there had been more footage of you from Lane’s End, but it was great to see you & PQ enjoying your time in the field. You look happy & healthy & that’s all that matters, pretty girl. Enjoy your visits this week with Dottie & the Mosses. I’ll be screaming for Zazu to get there first on Friday in the Oaks. Happy Spring, Zenny. Love, Carole

Sweet Zenyatta ~ you were STUNNING & oh so beautiful in the 60 Minutes segment! It is so obvious you are LOVED, LOVED by your fabulous team & by the wonderful & talented jockey Mike Smith <3 Everything about you RADIATES a shining light :) It was really neat to see you grazing there in Kentucky with Pirates Queen on tv Sunday evening just being precious girls in the field & enjoying life ~ makes my heart happy! :)
Best of luck to ZaZu in the Oaks this weekend! Here's also hoping for lots of fun & that everyone ~ horses & jockeys ~ is safe & healthy during all the magnificent races this weekend :)

Dear Zenyatta and everyone, I was so excited to find out that VERSUS (NBC) channel is covering Derby week starting on Wednesday and going through Saturday! Apparently this is a first for a major network. I know that this is because of you, Z, and your impact on us all. I love TVG and HRTV but it will be fun to have this added information. I am so sorry to hear about R Heat Lightening, just watched her work last night on HRTV with Todd talking about her. Loved what he said about how she loved her job. Devastating news. I think John and Dottie’s picture is wonderful! thank you for sharing.

@Kennedys, I like Arienza too. I’m glad she has become a runner. I wonder what happened to her half-brother Take Control? I had him on my Derby watch list early last year, then he got hurt. He’s in my virtual stable, but he hasn’t recorded any workouts. I hope he makes it back. He is loaded with talent. How cool that you got to meet their mother.

Winston Churchill’s famous quote, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” It is the gift of horses.

@LauraJ — We also followed Take Control. The last thing we heard came from his trainer, Bob Baffert, last December — he told us that Take Control was back at the farm.
He won his only race — as I recall, that was in December 2009 and then he was turned out due to an injury. He had some timed works in the summer/fall of 2010. He is now a 4 year old and we would love to see him return to training.

Thanks, livey!

Joyful Victory drew the rail for the Oaks; Zazu post 6 in a field of 13.

@Cindy from LA and Donna. Sir Henry Cecil has just announced that he will not send Frankel to the Epsom Derby. He thinks that Frankel needs more time to develop and the Derby is too soon. The Prince agrees. I guess that this is best for Frankel. Nijinsky will continue be the last English Triple Crown winner. We can still follow his career as I am certain that there will be more great races ahead for Frankel. Go Frankel!

Loved 60 minutes!! Great spot. I’m always telling my non horse friends or people I just meet along the way that they really need to catch up on Zenyatta because it was one of those great moments in sports history. I tell them she was like watching the great Secretariat. That she’ll be going down as one of the all time greats and they may never see it again…I’ve sent them youtube video’s to watch and I warn them they’ll get chills, they’ll cheer and they’ll cry and they did. They’ve thanked me for sharing the story and they’ve shared with their kids. Anyhow, I received a call or two from friends on Monday to tell me they watched 60 minutes and wow what a magnificent horse. I tried to tell them…..so thanks to 60 minutes for airing that story.

Thats so cool! I can’t wait to check it out! Love you Zenny!!! :D

My sweet Z! I am thinking of Zazu too. I sure wish her the best and safety too. To have your family there visiting is so awesome for you. No matter whether 60 minutes had previous film of you before you at Lane’s End; it warmed my heart to hear your team Z speak, to see them again, but of course, my biggest highlight is you!! That is what love does.
love with a kiss on your soft nose!

P.S. Oh my gosh I forgot to say to you Z, that this was a great picture of John and Dottie; you just hang around with goodlooking, kind people!

Hi Zenny
I saw Zazu run twice at Santa Anita this year! I enjoyed watching Turbulent Decent and you in the same races, as you each won a race and came in 2nd.
Turby was called T.D. because she was in a plane traveling that had so much turbulance that the filly (unnamed at the time) was injuried with deep leg injuries. Of course with excellent care, returned to perfect condition.
I read about it in the Blood-Horse magazine. So they named her for that. Pretty cute huh!
…. So, my little Zazu, I truely know you can win. Have a fun race.
Remember… the winners circle is your goal! Gezzz.. I just relized I’m writing to Zazu on your website Z! So please let her know… Love you guys…. :)

Great picture of John & Dottie!

What a great picture of Dottie & Mr. John Shirreffs. I love their love story. I was hooked on your “Dear John” after his Kentucky Derby win with Giacomo His kind, loving eyes looking up at his Champion..–and the Mosses–
Dottie-you are so kind and generous. I so could not speak to you the day after the BCC. I will never forget how patiently you answered all the fans questions and how when you remembered Stephanie Lam… when she finally arrived. I had purchased a box and had a dream of filling it with other Z-fans I meet on YT…Plus I didn’t want empty seats for Zenny’s big race. I think the world of you all and your love story alone is enough to put a smile on people’s faces…purple…legs…love…happiness..Everything about all of you is just so full of joy….may you know it always!

Hi Zenyatta. We were able to see the 60 minutes piece in its entirity. You are so magnificent. Truly a gift of God and an Angel in Disguise. We also are excited about the Friday and Saturday cards at Churchill. I was able to attend the last two years but this time I am going to enjoy the races from home. Looking so forward to Zazu, Blind Luck and Arienza running and all of the Derby hopefuls. They look so awesome. Can’t wait. It is going to be so grand to have your lovely family visit you in Kentucky – I know they will spend every moment they can with gorgeous you!! Love you so, stay dry, toasty, eat well and have loads of fun with your BBFs. Love you.
Elizabeth
Beautiful photo of John and Dottie! Zenny, I just watched the 60 minutes video. It was so exciting to see you and hear what everyone had to say about you. John’s comment about your kind eyes was my favorite. That’s what I always think about you and your ‘family’ – Jerry & Ann, John & Dottie, Mike and everyone else – kindness. Have a wonderful day, ‘Kentucky Woman’ (I think of that song by Neil Diamond now whenever I think of you there in the blue grass).
Especially Horses
Finally got a chance to watch the 60 Minutes segment and boy if I didn’t tear up! At times it is still hard to know you will never “dance” onto a race track again.

Oh! Zenyatta… I feel so sad, DEVIL MAY CARE, lost the battle with cancer,
I like horses so much, when something happen to one of them I really fell very
hurt, my prayers are for the owners.
I miss you, I love you Ingrid.

zenyatta, loved, loved, loved the 60 minute piece.. saw it the first time it came out, and saw the updated version. team zenyatta have so much love and respect for her, it was also great to see the newsmen get caught up with her spell. i cried some more happy tears for her, just can’t get enough of her. mike is so respectful of his big girl also. i really needed that boost. she is likea shot of adrenalin for me. some day i hope to meet her in person. for now i will watch the updates and follow wherever i can. love watching the old footage of her. god bless to all of the team and to that magnificent girl marsha roliardi

Zenyatta, I wish your buddies good luck in the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby. I saw the 60 Minutes piece on you and they mentioned your fondness for Guinness beer which you get if you’re good. They also got a shot with you and your buddies. I was very impressed with it all. You’re right about the nice weather.

I miss you terribly….there is no replacing you….thank you a thousand times over Dottie for bringing us news and pictures!!!!
