Q:
I have a question about the colts and fillies that are newly weaned. I understand that 12Z is in with a group of buddies right now and that one of them is a filly. Yet I thought colts got put with colts and fillies were kept separate, so there are no rivalries. My guess is that much like kids, at very young ages they don’t really “recognize” the difference. Am I right, and when does that start to change? Or does it completely depend on the personalities of the individual horses? And for that matter, when do the colts have to be in separate paddocks? At what ages do those separations need to start happening?
Julie Malida
Arlington Heights, IL
A:At this stage, the weanlings are mixed and not separated by gender. We will not separate them until later in the year. They don’t have a real understanding of their sex yet and mix well together at this point. Although you will see stronger tendencies of gender in some of them, to be honest some of the girls can be tougher than the boys at this stage!
Once we separate them they will stay in large groups until next spring when we start prepping for the yearling sales. The yearling fillies are always able to stay in a group, as they tend to be less boisterous with each other. The colts that are to be sale prepped are separated into individual paddocks at the start of the preparation period. Their paddocks are all adjacent to one another so this doesn’t really bother them too much. The “keeper” yearling colts will stay together, albeit in smaller groups, until they are shipped to the training farms where they will be broken in prior to joining their prospective trainers. This tends to be in the fall of their yearling year.

Terry, I’m sorry you are having to go through this moving — in leaving “a lifetime” of stability and memories (it sounds like), it’s neither easy nor painless. I hope you can take advantage of opportunities (if there are any) to benefit — like I know it would be good for me to get rid of stuff I really don’t need & want anymore, but since it “just sits there” not causing an immediate problem, I “let it sit”, until I get good and sick of looking at it! That’s the part of what makes me a redneck, that I want to change. At any rate, Terry, good luck with your preparations for moving, and let us know, if you need to talk about any of it. We are listening.

Snow Fairy won the Irish Champions Stakes today in convincing fashion. She is a super mare in the tradition of Z because she beat the boys, very superior types likes Nathaniel and St Nicholas Abbey. She also denied another group 1 win to Ballydoyle. Congrats Snow Fairy. You did well

Keta. Thanks for this. Snow is really a winner. She is owned by a woman, who was her breeder and offered her for sale in 2008. No one wanted Snow, kind of like Northern Dancer. She was bought back by her breeder and has since gone on to be a real champion. Those horses in that race are some of the best Irish and British colts. She showed them. Snow’s got Roberto in her pedigree so that you know that she has courage to burn.

In honor of Terry Crow, our Redneck leader, who is like several others of us, currently on a “moving hiatus”:
Dear Redneck Son,
I’m writing this letter slow because I know you can’t read fast.
We don’t live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles from your home, so we moved.
I won’t be able to send you the address because the last Alabama family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so that they wouldn’t have to change their address.
This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I’m not sure it works so well though. Last week I put a load in and pulled the chain and haven’t seen them since.
The weather isn’t bad here. It only rained twice last week; the first time for three days and the second time for four days.
About that coat you wanted me to send you, your Uncle Stanley said it would be to heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.
John locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.
Your sister had a baby this morning; but I haven’t found out what it is yet so I don’t know if your an aunt or an uncle. The baby looks just like your brother….
Uncle Ted fell in a whiskey vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out, but he fought them off playfully and drowned. We had him cremated and he burned for three days.
Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pick-up truck. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn’t get the tailgate down.
There isn’t much more news at this time. Nothing much has happened.
Love, Mom
P.S. I was going to send you some money but the envelope was already sealed.

As to the St. Leger, I am going with Thought Worthy. He is a son of Dynaformer and a brother to former winner, Lucarno. I can never ever go against Big D. I love Big D and all of his family unconditionally.
Max
Sheena. The great Lester Piggott on whom you appear to rely as an expert abandoned Roberto in 1972 to ride Rheingold because he did not think that Roberto could win the Epsom Derby. Roberto in fact won in an incredible show of sheer electrifying grit and determination, ridden by a US jockey who had never before raced in England. Roberto handed the then unbeaten super horse Brigadier Gerard his only loss. Roberto is Thought Worthy’s grand sire via Big D. Do not count out the Big D family. Love you, Big D. Go for it, TT.

SNOW FAIRY, thanks for the video Max, here is bloodhorse article.

Max
Sign. Great article. Snow came back from a serious tendon injury to beat first class colts and set a course record at the grade 1 level. Most owners particularly in NA would have retired her after such an injury. Instead her owner rested her and gave her another chance. She is not the same horse. Snow is actually better than before. Snow’s trainer gives credit to her owner for sticking by this mare. The breeder and owner is a woman. Snow shares Roberto with Z in her pedigree. Girl power reigns supreme in Leopardstown today.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
Dear Max,
So very true, most owner after an injury will retire for the stud/broodmare
money in US. Sooo glad Snow Fairy’s owners have continued her.
Would really love to see her at the BC. Her closing turn of foot reminds
me of Goldikova.
Max
Sign. If Snow stays healthy, she probably will head to the Breeders’ Cup. She likes to travel. She went to Ireland to win, and she sure did it.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
I hope SF comes to BC, however she has quite
ambitious schedule of races.
Max
Sign. If the choice is facing Frankel or the Breeders Cup, she will probably travel to the US. No horse wants to take on Frankel if there is a good alternative with prestige and good price money like the BC. I think that Snow has raced in 5 different countries and the US would make it 6. They call her the Travelling Princess of racing.

I wonder if they are really wanting to stop tha IV, as not wanting him to get another infection I am just a layperson here, but I know I hate IV’s, No, But that was the cathetar that he got ihe infection from before wasn’t it??????
Hope he will be ok without the antibiotics.
signofthetimes; President Texas Chapter RNC
The issue is probably he is completed the treatment course (number of days on antibiotics) and his fever had become normal over a few days.
However, a phenomenon called deffervesce can occur in which the fever comes back they need to figure out again what is going on and treat with another antibiotic.
IV infection is only a complication of IV therapy it does not have to do with his body’s infection.
Hope that helps !!!

I agree with you. Paynter’s doctor is an expert and a respected professional within her field. If she believes that Paynter is ready to be taken off the meds and the I.V. who are we to question her judgement? I just trust her great knowledge and expertise. I know they will do right by him.
Max
Marilu. When you look at all of the complications that this horse has endured, it is incredible that he is still alive let alone doing this well. These doctors and other medical staff at that hospital are truly amazing to have achieved this. Paynter, he’s just a miracle on hooves.
Keeping fighting, Paynter. When you get out of that hospital, I may finally get some sleep.

Followup Redneck letter after their “move”, posted yesterday:
Dear Son:
Your Paw has a job. It’s the first one he had in forty-eight years since we have been married. We are a little better off now, because we have so much money now we don’t know what to do with it. Paw gets $17.15 every Thursday, so we thought we ought to do something about fixing up the house.
We sent to Sears & Roebuck for one of those bathrooms you hear people having in houses. It took a plumber to put it in shape.
On one side of the bathroom is a great long thing something like a pig trough, only you get in it and wash all over. Over on the other side is a little white thing they call a sink where you wash your face and hands. But over in the corner we really got something. This thing, you put one foot in, wash it clean, then you pull the chain and get fresh water for the other foot.
Two lids come with the thing. We got no use for them in the bathroom so I’m using one for the bread board. The other lid has a hole in it so we use it for a frame for grandfather’s picture.
Sears & Roebuck are real nice people to deal with. They sent us a roll of paper with the outfit. We can’t write on it very well, so I’m using it to wrap Paw’s lunch. Take care of yourself.

Comments regarding stopping antibiotics are only related to what can happen after.
They have to be stopped at some time and they are being appropriately stopped at the end of the course (number of day) and the horse has no fever for a number of day. NO NEGATIVE COMMENT REGARDING THE VETS, JUST MEDICAL KNOWLEGE.
PLEASE DON’T MAKE NEGATIVE ASSUMPTIONS WHEN THEY ARE NOT THERE.
Antibiotics are prescribed for a specific number of days, when that course does not work they try another course or another antibiotics. No one knows other than the vets how many antibiotics they have used and for how many days.
There is a physiologic response when antibiotics are stopped in a horse with soooo many complications and it is call defervesence, which means the fever may come back
tomorrow or in a number of days and they have to look again for something.

Sign,
We must remain cautiously optimistic,correct?
I am sure the vets are also praying.
The horse innards are so very delicate.
Sign, thanks for reminding us to remain cautiously optimistic during this very uncertain time.

Marilu. Totally agree. Let us continue our prayers and candles for Paynter, his doctors and his connections. Paynter has been through so much and has come so far, but our Paynter is not there yet. Paynter, please get well. PUP.
