Q:
I have a question about the colts and fillies that are newly weaned. I understand that 12Z is in with a group of buddies right now and that one of them is a filly. Yet I thought colts got put with colts and fillies were kept separate, so there are no rivalries. My guess is that much like kids, at very young ages they don’t really “recognize” the difference. Am I right, and when does that start to change? Or does it completely depend on the personalities of the individual horses? And for that matter, when do the colts have to be in separate paddocks? At what ages do those separations need to start happening?
Julie Malida
Arlington Heights, IL
A:At this stage, the weanlings are mixed and not separated by gender. We will not separate them until later in the year. They don’t have a real understanding of their sex yet and mix well together at this point. Although you will see stronger tendencies of gender in some of them, to be honest some of the girls can be tougher than the boys at this stage!
Once we separate them they will stay in large groups until next spring when we start prepping for the yearling sales. The yearling fillies are always able to stay in a group, as they tend to be less boisterous with each other. The colts that are to be sale prepped are separated into individual paddocks at the start of the preparation period. Their paddocks are all adjacent to one another so this doesn’t really bother them too much. The “keeper” yearling colts will stay together, albeit in smaller groups, until they are shipped to the training farms where they will be broken in prior to joining their prospective trainers. This tends to be in the fall of their yearling year.

Got the gambling gene from my father’s side of the family! My father and his parents and extended family LOVED the horses they would go to Saratoga every year for 2 weeks and stay in these little cabins! Just discovered the slots this April while I was at the casino for the Kentucky Derby Party they have! I usually play the same machines, but happened upon some new machines last weekend (because I got hopelessly lost!) Put a twenty in and hit it for 700.00! Needless to say I was shocked! My girlfriends and I go up maybe once a month, have a few drinks, a few laughs and play the slots!
I believe you could probably fly into Albany Airport? Albany is maybe 30-40 mins away from Saratoga? Like Pati said the bigger airports are about an hour and half maybe a little longer away from the “Spa” Making a plan sounds good to me, I am a planner too!
Great news about “our sweet boy” Paynter, out grazing…….sounds good! Will continue to pray for his full recovery either on the racetrack or as a “proud papa”!

It gave me the “shakes” the first time I did it, but when I married (23 years ago this Oct 7th), I started tossing out Bloodhorse magazines that I’d been storing since I was a teenager. Of course there were a few I just could not part with because of the photo on the cover. Back then I even tried giving them to a second-hand book and magazine store but they didn’t want them. I should try offering them again; I bet Bookmans in Flagstaff, Az would take them. Now what I do is save them up for about a year, keep the ones that are a bit more special to me and then give away the others for “free” when I have a garage sale. There is always a horse crazy teenage girl who is delighted to get them.

Saratoga Race Course opened on Friday 7/20 this year for 40 days. Since they made the season longer there I’m not sure if opening day will always be on the 3rd Friday of July but thought I would clarify since it gives you Zsters more days to choose from.
Really wish I could join you and I hope to attend but I have a respiratory condition that restricts my activity so my wonderful husband and I go for my birthday or a close day at the end of July….always a gift.

Sheena. It is inspiring that Kauto is 12 and still looks so good. He is very well cared for at Ditcheat. It is also great that his buddy Denman is starting a new career. Denman is like Lava Man. Retirement from racing means getting another job. The lady who hired Denman as a chaser has promised updates on his work. I am looking forward to that.
I looked up Ouiji Board’s stats. Wow! Ed Dunlop certainly did a good job as her trainer. I see also that Lord Derby is keeping her filly by Galileo. Maybe she will race like her momma? OB must have inherited the Danzig determination.
Andy Murray is doing okay at the moment. Hooves crossed for him.

More great info on Zenyatta growing up! Worth the read!!
Don Robinson Talks About Zenyatta as a Young Horse at Winter Quarter Farm.
at THE SATURDAY POST. November 15th, 2010 § 39
Fairy tales often begin when a seemingly ordinary life takes a magical twist and ventures toward a fabled outcome.
Keta Note: The article is a Q & A session. Here is an excerpt
JW: How would you describe Zenyatta’s personality as a young girl?
DR: As a young girl, Zenyatta was very personable.
Zenyatta was full of spirit, but she was reasonable. She had a sister before her, a really good filly, named Balance. Balance was very flighty. She was a great race horse, not as good as Zenyatta of course, but Balance was hard to handle. You always had to be thinking ahead of her.
Zenyatta had that sort of energy, but was much more reasonable. You could sort of talk to her and she understood you. Thoroughbreds can be very spirited and fiery, but the good ones tend to have a good mind.
Max
Keta. Get post. That is why we love our Queen. She has fire and power, but she knows how to control it, a real champion. And she’s beautiful inside and out.

Belmont Park notes: Dreaming of Julia points to Frizette
By David Grening DRF 09/10/2012 5:42 PM
ELMONT, N.Y. – Dreaming of Julia, attempting to follow in the hoofprints of her champion stablemate My Miss Aurelia, will make her next start in the Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette here Oct. 6, owner Barbara Banke said.
Banke is the head of Stonestreet Stables, which last year campaigned My Miss Aurelia to the juvenile filly championship. My Miss Aurelia made the third start of her career in the Frizette before polishing off her Eclipse Award with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Dreaming of Julia has certainly impressed in her first two starts, winning her debut at Saratoga by 10 1/2 lengths on Aug. 6 before romping to a 16 1/4-length score in Sunday’s Meadow Star Stakes here.
Dreaming of Julia’s final time was a solid 1:36.46, the fastest of four one-mile dirt races run on the card. She earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 for the performance.
“Super impressed,” said Banke, who named the filly after her daughter. “I think she’s really a good filly, so we’re going to have lots of fun with her.”

St Leger news. Interesting article on the contenders who must have deep stamina not just speed for this nearly 2 mile race.
Thought Worthy is described as being a stayer from a family of tough staying horses, a family which is US based from Dynaformer. TW was born in Kentucky and is US owned. Watch over your boy, Big D.

Just watched an Inside Information on HRTV about Euro training which is much different then US TB training.
The Euro Equines go out into the beautiful hilly country side and canter, gallop for quite a while almost daily. Up and down the hills and dales and the beautiful grassy country side.
One of the Euro trainers was saying, what is timing and running 5 furlongs, we don’t care
about that as the tracks are soo varied. It was a great commentary regarding the stamina and the less injured the Euro horses are and why they fillies are soooo strong.
Max
Most turf race courses in England and the continent have pronounced hills and valleys. That is why the horses are trained like that. US horses would get no benefit from that kind of training because most of them race on dirt and poly. Horses have to be trained for the conditions under which they race. There is an impression that there are less injuries in Europe, but sad to say the injury rate is probably similar. Injury is a fact of life for all athletes. As for stamina, Dynaformer is one of the best sires for stamina in English turf horses. Thought Worthy is US born, bred and owned as is his brother, Lucarno. The champion filly, Blue Bunting, is a daughter of Dynaformer. Big D heads a tough stamina family here and in Europe. They do not come any tougher than Big D.

For the first time in many weeks I can finally get to my computer. I’ll never be able to catch up on all the news I’ve missed but Victoria has been keeping me posted daily on all the race results and the medical reports on Paynter.
Vic is now in college and starting her Performance Handler program thru the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. The facilities are quite impressive and there is a good mix of horse breeds and disciplines for the students to experience. At the welcome dinner on the first day Vic was seated at the same table as the local Mayor, so she took the opportunity to acquaint him with her views on the Provincial Government’s policies concerning the horse industry in Ontario.
Yesterday I was so happy to spend the afternoon at the Fort Erie track with Sandy and her friend Barb who had come from NE Ohio to spend a few days of R&R in Ontario. I do believe that Sandy enjoyed betting real money and did a pretty good job of handicapping even tho there weren’t any stakes races on the card. A totally enjoyable second meeting of the RNC Presidents of NE Ohio and Canada!!! It was too bad that Sandy and Barb weren’t here a couple of weeks earlier for a Breakfast at the Track when Victoria, in full Zenyatta dress, was interviewed by the track announcer and took over the microphone to do a “Zenny 101” for all the people munching on their bacon, sausage and eggs. She received a nice round of applause and I think Zenny, and 12Z, would have been quite pleased.
Sandy and I are now looking forward to Santa Anita and the opportunity to meet our fellow Dumplings so the count down has begun – less than 9 weeks!!!!!!!

Dear Darlene – Mine was in the mail today. If it doesn’t come, they are so nice when you call. I’ve somehow not gotten a few over the years I’ve subscribed and they send another one out right away. I think they do say 5-7 days delivery time. I have some of my Bloodhorse magazines in frames (Z’s) cover photo shots and I have instructed my grand daughter these are precious and never to be tossed. They may very well be valuable at some point! Money could not buy them from me while I’m above ground!!!!
As an aside, I have lots of catching up to do as I was gone from Wed through Sat.
Part of my trip was to visit Giacomo at Magali Farms ( beautiful) he looks stunning, like a silver-winged Pegasus. Lovely tour of the farm, Santa Ynez Valley is a bit of heaven on earth ( although it was in the 90’s)!!!!! so another place might come to mind. All staff very kind/ met the other stallions who also reside there. Too many names, but check out their website, one is an A.P. INDY son. Giacomo gets lots of visitors and he had 52 lady-friends visit him this season. He is well-cared for as they all are. Wish ALL horses had such a quality of life. Then onto Ojai for a spa day and selfish self-indulgence. Reality on the 101 So/405/and 5 hit on Saturday. I would gladly muck stalls on that farm, and many other beautiful horse farms to just drive by and enjoy the pastoral scenery. Have a good week one and all.

@ Carol in Utah-Have you thought about coming this way for your move?? Have lived in this state for 33 years now and the best part of my life started when I came here. I think there are jobs to be had in Boise area, though it’s not as “hot” as it was a few years ago. Of course,I love the Sun Valley area best, where I live—you could not find a better place to live in the world,in my opinion!! If you’ve never been here, would love you to come and check it out and I would show you all around!
Congrats to Snow Fairy and all her team!! Wouldn’t it be incredible to see her at the BC??
@ Brenda in Ont.-How great to hear from you again!! Wish I could have been there to hear Vic do her thing with the mayor and at the track—must have been great!! So glad you will be at the BC and party. It’s getting close now–can hardly believe that we will really BE there—am SO excited!!
@ Diana Stuart-Speaking of the BC—like the big dummy I often am,I have misplaced your e-mail address to order my Dumpling tag!! I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was going to send off a request and then my e-mail has gone nuts and I have thousands of messages on it and when I try to check something it jumps over them so fast that I can’t see them all!! I see that you sent out the “last” of them already. If you don’t want to make any more,I surely understand,as you have taken on a huge project. If I COULD get one,I’d love it, but I surely understand if you have made all you’re going to. My e-mail is suenoel@cox.net–I hope I can find the message if you send me one!!
@ All Barnaby Lovers- Barnaby has been on a supplement that was really full of vitamins and all–I think I mentioned that I was going to take him off of it as he was so “high”. Was going to ride him last Saturday and he was really good with getting groomed and all. However,he was fixated on something going on in the next pasture, part of a now deserted farm, where the owner has passed away and the family has done nothing with it. He kept staring off and just couldn’t be distracted so I decided not to ride and we just worked him some in the round ring. It was gorgeous to watch him tearing around and getting some of his energy out—but,I was glad I was not on board!! He had watermelon afterwards and was SO happy!!! Wish I’d had one or two more pics left on my camera,as I had taken several photos of his Auntie Sue trying out various saddles. She is trying to find just the right one for Traveller as she (Sue,not Traveller)_ has back problems. After we finished working and feeding and all,I would like to have been able to get a photo of him, gazing off in the distance,so fixed on whatever he saw or heard or sensed out there!! Horses are at their most beautiful when they do that, ears pricked and so alert. I swear, when he is seeing something like that,he grows another hand taller!! He looks like a perfect statue, the epitome of “horsey” beauty!! Will be off in a few minutes and will go down to give huim his evening feeding–just can’t wait to catch sight of him! He knows the sound of my car now,so I no longer have to call him–he starts for “his” spots at the fence as soon as he hears and sees the car!! What a guy!!
Love to all and blessing on our Queen and her Prince for a pewaceful night and a blissful day tomorrow.

Wal, here’s our Redneck “story” for the day:
After a Southern man moved from Atlanta to a New Jersey suburb, a fellow passenger on a train asked how he liked it in the country.
“It was difficult at first,” the man replied, “but it’s a lot better since I got myself a paramour.”
The passenger was astonished. “A paramour?” he said. “Does your wife know?”

Judy, watch out for this guy. He may be “stringing you”. Back in the day, I had a lot of experience buying horses and some owners “stringing me” trying to get a higher price. Maybe that’s not the case with this trainer, but don’t let him do that to you. The amount he’s wanting for Papa Charlie is wishful thinking on his part. Finishing 6th in a race is nothing to brag about and he maybe thinking your a sentimental woman that he can string along. I’m not trying to tell you what to do, please don’t think that I am. I just don’t trust people like this.

I watched quite a bit of the Keeneland sale today. They are all so stunning. You really have to know about horses, I think, to know who to bid on. The one I really wanted to see was Hip115, Life is Sweet’s Smart Strike colt from last year, but he was pulled out before the sale started. Filly from final crop of A.P. Indy brings $1.1-million

by Nicole Russo Thoroughbred Times
A.P. Sonata, a filly from the final crop of A.P. Indy, sold for $1.1-million to Whisper Hill Farm during the opening session of the Keeneland September yearling sale on Monday evening.
The 1992 Horse of the Year and Racing Hall of Fame member, who was pensioned in 2011, is represented by 15 cataloged yearlings in the Keeneland September catalog. Eight of those sold went through the ring during Monday’s select session with six selling for a combined $3.6-million, an average of $600,000.
Leading the way was A.P. Sonata, consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent, out of the graded stakes winning Carson City mare Moonlight Sonata.
“It’s very special,” Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill said of landing a horse from the sire’s final crop.

Sad memories today, many families in America and Canada will be remembering their loved ones.
Pati- Having a quiet moment; thinking of Sammy.
Sneaking a post between classes! Hope everyone is having a good day! I have impressions of the sale when I get home. Some of the yearlings were really nice this year!
Diana Stuart - Getting So Excited
Memories of 9-11: I was packing boxes getting ready to move and watched in stunned silence as the 2nd plane hit. That set the tone for the next several days. Drove to my job at Arizona State University and was struck by the eerie silence as I passed Sky Harbor Airport – not a plane in the sky. All we did all day was watch the television in our office. Workmates stuck in foreign places unable to come home. That night, awful news. A friend was lost. Her grieving husband called. She also left behind a 5 year old son and 7 year old daughter – almost grown up now. She was never found. R.I.P. Marie.
