Q:
When a racing thorougbred is retired from the track with the intention of being bred, do they generally settle down quickly from all the excitement of the track or does it take a while depending on the horse’s personality? Also, shortly after Silver Charm was retired to stand at stud, I watched a brief special on TV that said that he continued to be ridden and that he enjoyed being ridden. How common is it that thoroughbreds are still ridden after they are retired and are on a breeding farm? Just curious! Thanks for all you guys do!!

A:
Racehorses typically settle into retirement quite quickly. You have to remember we are actually putting them back in to a more natural environment to the one they have been living in at the track. However we don’t just bring them to the farm and put them out in the herd in a big field. The process is gradual and each horse dictates how long it takes depending on their behavior and also the time of year and weather conditions. We will turn them out in a small paddock daily and bring them in every evening. Typically with the fillies we then introduce them to a friend or two before they are eventually put in a larger field with a bigger group.
We do not ride any of our horses here at Lane’s End but it is not entirely uncommon to hear of Stallions being ridden after they are retired. At Three Chimneys Farm they do ride the stallions hence the piece on Silver Charm that you saw. We use a horse walker for the stallions that need additional exercise to help keep them trim.

William Marsh
My wife and I visited the old Spendthrift Farm back in the early ’80s when Seattle Slew was standing there. We watched as they tacked him up, put an exercise rider on him and galloped him around the perimeter of his paddock. He went around three or four times, probably at least a mile. They did that four days a week when he wasn’t breeding.

How great is that! I think it’s wonderful that they gave him the opportunity to exercise. Loved Slew. He went through a bad patch in 1978 with a severe viral infection which for a while was life threatening. He fought through it and lived to the age of 28. Here’s a page of photos of him. How can an owner who finishes second in all three Triple Crown races, two of them in photos; loses the Pimlico Special by a nose; and loses his three best horses to injury claim to have had his greatest year ever?
Ahmed Zayat hasn’t come right out and made such a claim, but the truth is, 2012 has indeed been his best year as an owner, because he has had the rare privilege of witnessing and experiencing first hand the heart and courage of a champion and being right there all the way as his horse fought his greatest battle. Remarkably, it is a battle he currently is winning.
Keta Note: Here are the closing paragraphs
There will be no trophies for Paynter at this year’s Eclipse Awards dinner, but trophies and what they represent can take on many forms and have just as proud a place in the heart as they do on the mantle.
To those who have marveled at his resolve and invested so much emotion following his plight, Paynter in his own way is the 2012 Horse of the Year

Another great “Ask the Experts” question. Thank you Megan Tallent for asking and thank you Alys for your, as usual, easy to understand answer, Thank you also for the beautiful photo of our Queen.
Personally, I wouldn’t even want to try to get a girth hitched up around Zenyatta. She has taken to her motherhood role and getting into proper form in the championship manner she does with everything. We know she likes exercise, too and does it quite well from the videos we have previously seen. With that and the monitoring she gets from Lane’s End she is tip top for her job as brood mare.

Sooo cute Marty R,
I bet she had a 54″ or bigger girth when she was on the track, guess it would have to be custom made now.
She is soooo very happy being pregnant and raising her “children”, I would not want that changed for her at all.

I know Saratoga does or use to do steeplechase races! It was the first race on Monday’s card. I stopped going for the first race on Monday’s because it was just too upsetting to watch, it made my stomach turn with nerves! All most every time I went something horrible would happen, and then it would ruin my day at the track! So my daughter (who would never watch) and I decided that was one race we could miss and be perfectly happy! I don’t know about the other 2 tracks you mentioned as I have never been to them!

48-1 Pierrot Lunaire lights up tote board in G1 Lonesome Glory steeplechase
Pierrot Lunaire, the longest shot on the board at 48-1, took the lead over the final jump and held off a furious late charge from Spy in the Sky to win Thursday afternoon’s Grade 1, $150,000 Lonesome Glory steeplechase.
Trained by Blythe Miller Davies and saddled by her father, Bruce, the 8-year-old War Chant gelding stayed well back as Duc de Savoie led the field of 10 to the far turn of the 2 ½-mile race over national fences. Launching his run on the outside after the second-to-last fence, Pierrot Lunaire was the first to clear the final hurdle and denied the runner-up by a nose after a spirited stretch battle.
It was the first victory since taking the Grade 1 Iroquois in May, 2009 for Pierrot Lunaire, who is owned by Mrs. Calvin Houghland. Unraced in 2010, the gelding made three starts in 2011 and three this year prior to Thursday’s race, all in graded events. Most recently he was fifth in the Grade 3 Zeke Ferguson Memorial in June at Colonial Downs.
“He ran well in the Zeke Ferguson over a little shorter trip,” said winning jockey Bernard Dalton. “We were handy the whole way, and he was beaten only [13 ¾] lengths against faster horses. Bruce said he was training real well, otherwise he wouldn’t bother coming up being a long shot, and he took the blinkers off. The horse just traveled and jumped. [Bruce] said to me, ‘I want you to hold him up today. Just pop away, pop away, and don’t come with a run until after the second-to-last [fence].’”
Pierrot Lunaire returned $99.50 for a $2 win bet, and earned $90,000. For his career, he is 4-5-4 from 25 starts with a bankroll of $355,579.
“I was really nervous because he did not run that well this spring and had not run since [June],” said Bruce Miller, who in the 1990’s trained Lonesome Glory, the champion steeplechaser for whom the race was named. “We put a lot of work into him to get him this far and to be honest with you, I didn’t really think he would win. I thought he would run well, but I never expected him to win.”
Spy in the Sky was two lengths ahead of Charminster, with Left Unsaid, History Boy, Divine Fortune, Duc de Savoie, Tax Ruling and The Jigsaw Man completing the order of finish. All Together left the course before the final jump. Demonstrative was scratched.

Another breakdown during a Steeplechase race raises the question: Should the Steeplechase race be discontinued?
Published: Thursday, September 27, 2012
Andrew Champagne is a sportswriter for the Saratogian
Originally, this column was going to profile Saturday’s stakes races at Belmont Park. With six graded races, including the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup, it promises to be one of the top racing cards in North America this year.
That changed shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. That was when Fog Island, a horse running in a steeplechase race at Belmont Park, fell over the race’s seventh fence and was vanned off. It was not immediately clear if Fog Island was euthanized Thursday.
This is the latest blow to steeplechase racing in New York, and it’s taken more than its fair share of those this year. Among other public relations nightmares, three horses were euthanized after running over fences on Open House day at Saratoga Race Course this past summer, and the inaugural Steeplechase Festival, scheduled for earlier this month at the Spa, was cancelled.
However, an outright ban on jump races in the Empire State is not the answer. That solves one problem, but takes away several races that are among the most prestigious run all year. In addition to the Turf Writer’s Cup, Saratoga’s stakes calendar also boasts the Grade 1 A.P. Smithwick, and Thursday’s Grade 1 Lonesome Glory at Belmont saw 10 horses vie for a $150,000 purse.
Even steeplechase horses are not immune to the current system of breeding, which has changed the sport of kings drastically over the past 20 years. Horses once bred to go a mile and a half are now bred to go a mile, and with jump races going more than two miles, the available talent obviously shrinks. What the described system does is give steeplechase horses more time to rest, more time to train and, ideally, more of a chance to showcase the sport positively with a decreased chance of catastrophic breakdowns.
There is not one solution that will fix the problems steeplechase racing has in New York, but that doesn’t mean that it should go away entirely. Once a revamped system is put in place, one that helps bettors, horses, and connections alike, the steeplechase community will be in a great position to thrive.
It’s just too bad it has taken this many breakdowns to get here.

It is much more difficult watching several horses/several riders galloping over hill & dale & hedges & fences.

Orfevre, Camelot Among 18 Runners for Arc
By Myra Lewyn

Camelot will start from post 5 in the Arc.
The 91st edition of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) Oct. 7 at Longchamp attracted a large and competitive field of 18, headed by reigning Japanese Horse of the Year Orfevre and multiple European classic winner Camelot.
Post positions were drawn Oct. 5 for the 1 1/2-mile (2,400-meter) event that is Europe’s richest race at $5.1 million. The winner will join a win roster of the Thoroughbred racing’s elite that includes the likes of Ribot, Sea-Bird, Vaguely Noble, Mill Reef, Alleged, and Sea The Stars, to name only a few.
The Arc is one of seven group I races on the Oct. 7 card, which will provide American bettors the chance to wager into world’s second-largest pool. Kentucky-based simulcast and wagering company AmWest Entertainment has joined with France’s Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) to simulcast the Arc weekend races, beginning Oct. 6.
Orfevre will have to overcome the widest post in stall 18 in his bid to become the first Arc winner from Japan, where the event is widely regarded as racing’s top prize. Winner of last year’s Triple Crown in his native country, the 4-year-old Stay Gold colt will be the 11th Arc starter from Japan, which has come tantalizingly close to victory, most recently finishing second in 2010 with Nakayama Festa; third in 2006 with Deep Impact before he was disqualified; and second in 1999 with El Condor Pasa.
Orfevre will be guided by four-time French champion jockey and two-time Arc winner Christophe Soumillon, who rode the strong-willed colt to a last-to-first victory over Arc opponent Meandre in the Prix Foy (Fr-II) on Sept. 16 in his French debut.
Three-year-olds have captured the Arc eight times in the past nine runnings, and eight will take a shot this year.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who won the Arc with Dylan Thomas in 2007, has a strong chance with Coolmore and associates’ Camelot, who will start from post 5.
Winner of the Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) and Investec English Derby (Eng-I), the Montjeu colt just missed becoming the first English Triple Crown winner in more than 40 years in a stunning upset under a tactically flawed ride from O’Brien’s son Joseph in the Ladbrokes St. Leger (Eng-I) Sept. 15 at Doncaster. A win in the Arc for the colt, who also won the Irish Derby (Ire-I) this season, could go far in softening the blow of his tough St. Leger loss as the overwhelming favorite.
Joseph O’Brien was deemed too heavy to ride Camelot in the Arc. In a surprise announcement this week, the colt will be ridden by Godolphin stable rider Frankie Dettori, who has ridden in the past 24 Arcs and won three times.
Godolphin will be represented in the Arc by French-based 3-year-old Masterstroke, winner of the Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville (Fr-II) in August at Deauville. The colt is by recently deceased sire Monsun. His second dam is 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea, who produced Galileo and Sea The Stars. Masterstroke is trained by seven-time Arc winner Andre Fabre and will be ridden by Mickael Barzalona from post 17.
Other sophomores set to contest the Arc include Prix du Jockey Club (Fr-I, French Derby) winner Saonois, a Chichicastenango colt who will start from post 2 under Antoine Hamelin, and Irish Oaks (Ire-I) winner Great Heavens, a half sister to Nathaniel, who was withdrawn from the race earlier this week with a fever. Saonois and Great Heavens were each supplemented at a cost of (€100,000). The Galileo filly will start from post seven under William Buick.
The younger O’Brien retains the mount on St Nicholas Abbey, who finished fifth in last year’s Arc after leading in the stretch, then rebounded to win the 2011 Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT).
The Montjeu horse won the 1 1/2-mile Coronation Cup (Eng-I) for the second straight year in June. He returns to his best distance in the Arc, where he will start from post 10.
Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms aims for a fourth win in the race. The expected soft ground at Longchamp this weekend will be an advantage for Sea Moon. The 4-year-old Beat Hollow colt was runner-up in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf and fifth in the Betfair King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Eng-I) July 21 at Ascot in his most recent start.
Jockey Ryan Moore, who was to make his comeback riding Oct. 5 after being has been sidelined since August with a broken wrist, has been named to ride Sea Moon, who will start from post 16.
Second in the Arc last year, the Aga Khan’s 4-year-old filly Shareta landed the Darley Yorkshire Oaks (Eng-I) Aug. 23 at York and followed with a comfortable win in the Qatar Prix Vermeille (Fr-I) Sept. 16 at Longchamp to secure her place as a leading contender to win the Arc. The Sinndar filly drew 11 and will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire.
The Aga Khan also is represented by supplemental entry Bayrir, a 3-year-old Medicean colt who recently won the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) at Arlington Park.
The Arc program begins at 7:30 a.m. EDT, with eight Thoroughbred races extending through 12:25 p.m.

by Ray Paulick | 10.05.2012 | 12:36pm
John Collins, a beloved Central Kentucky farrier who worked with any number of top Thoroughbreds including Horse of the Year Zenyatta, died suddenly at his home in Scott County on Wednesday night or Thursday morning, the Paulick Report has learned.
Cause of death was not known, though friends said they believe he may have suffered an aneurysm.
“No one had more friends than Johnny Collins,” said Mike Kline, manager of Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky., where Collins spent a good part of Wednesday working with the farm’s horses. “He’s just one of those people you wanted to be around. I feel really bad for his mother, his sisters and his family. We are all in shock out here. He was a really fit, healthy guy.”
Excerpt from the article
Even Zenyatta had a soft spot for John Collins. A diary post written in her name at Zenyatta.com on Dec. 14, 2010, said: “My blacksmith here at Lane’s End is the same person who took care of my feet years ago when I lived in Kentucky! His name is Johnny Collins. He is the same man who put on my shoes when I went to the Keeneland Sale in September, 2005! He took care of my feet when I was a little girl! Now, here he is taking off my shoes at the farm several years later. This is absolutely adorable! Johnny told me he’d been keeping track of me and all of my progress since then! It was so great to touch base with him, my first blacksmith, after all of these years! We had a blast sharing all of the FUN times since we last saw each other!

If it all works out for her, she could stamp herself as a new queen of racing. I hope it its well! Mike is sitting on a talent! She could even become the highest female money earner if she wins the World Cup and the Classic. I can’t wait for next year! I hope she stays happy and healthy! I love the sporting spirit of her connections!

dear sign it was very interesting to read keta’s post about steeplechasingit’s sad to see horses fall and get injured but that can happen in flat races also but it’s a thrill to watch a horse like kauto in full flight it’s sad to think he’s coming to the end of his career !! the jump jockeys over here are a extremely brave bunch when champion tony mcoy falls his first thought is when he can get back on a horse he’s been our jump champion every year since 1994 hugs sheenaX

Dear Sheena,
I enjoyed Keta’s post as well. The difficult thing with
steeplechase is the jockeys are in jockey position,
Not like Grand Prix jumping with a solid seat and a
Leg on. All jockey’s are fearless and I agree they all fall
And get injured at some time. A breakdown is almost
Worse to me, but I personally love to jump. Kauto just
Loves it too, he is 12 years old?? What a great career,
Sounds like you will miss him a lot. Will look up the jump
Jockey you mentioned.
Luck to all the Euro’s in the Arc, safe and sound trips for this
Test of skill and stamina !!!

Maybe thats why it’s so scary for me, the way the jockey’s are positioned? Because I love the jumping and dressage and horse related sports! It never dawned on me about the position of the jockey? See I learned something new today! It must be a wild ride to be on the back of a jumper/hunter? I am sure it’s a feeling you CAN NOT describe, but must actually experience!
Good Luck Capping thus weekend! This one is tough! Picked my horse by the way of the jockey!! (Not much handicapping there!)
Thanks for all you have taught me!

Greetings people on a windy, wet Saturday. Here’s a nice piece on Stout Hearted (son of the great Dynaformer, and raced as Seelo when in England). He goes round today in the Metropolitan at Randwick in Sydney:

Go Stout Hearted – do it for your great Dad!
carol in utah/soon Arkansas
Read this……very interesting …..went to check pedigree and can only pull him up using “Seelo”…only races and earnings under this name come up…think Stout Hearted fits him better….beautiful boy…
……..
also…interesting about the foals born without tails….never heard of this before….
……..
ZENTASTICS……tweet on drf says Balance the Books will scratch out of our race tomorrow and run on Sunday instead on turf….check it out tomorrow if you used him….

Dear Sheen and Z Fans,
Found a lovely photo album of one of the few US Steeplchase champions, Flatterer,
In 2011, he was 33 years old. He jumped in the mid 1980’s and then went on
to a second career of dressage. He has a “younger” girlfriend that keeps him company in his paddock in the state of Pennsylvania. This photo album is by one of our most well known Equine photographers, Barbara Livingston.
Hope you all enjoy it. (There is no video of any of his races).

Dear Sign and Z Fans:
Thanks for this link on Flatterer. He raced at Saratoga Meets in 1982, 1983 and 1984. He was bred and trained by Jonathan Sheppard. Hugs, JB

Yes, Judy.
HRTV did a great Inside Information on him.
He is a beautiful, old man. Love the description
Of his younger girlfriend running over to
The other side of the paddock and he saunters over
To catch her. She keeps him exercising.
He is a very nice looking horse.
