Happy Friday!

Ann’s recent trip to Lane’s End was all smiles as old friends were reunited. Mario and Carmen, who both worked with Zenyatta at Barn 55, joined Ann and got to meet Zenyatta’s 2017 Medaglia d’Oro filly. Scroll down for lots of photos.

Here’s something that you don’t hear often. Yesterday Airlie Beach won the Construction hurdles at Tramore for Willie Mullins just two weeks after racing at Galway and getting a third. She already has a foal on the ground who is in training, and she is in foal again to Mount Nelson. This may not be her last race. Mullins has yet to decide. She’s in excellent form.

Sarah who runs the Fly’s page wasn’t keen on the idea of her running but as I am sure you know a mare’s form improves when in foal. She will be allowed to race up to 120 days as is the rule over here.

You are right that some mares race better while in foal and can race for several months into their pregnancy. Mullins knows exactly what he is doing and he would never put any horse at risk.

    Friday night chilling at Saratoga

    Knock, knock.
Biscuits: If that’s you, Gun, you don’t ever have to knock. The stall door is always open to you.
Gun: Yeah, it’s me. I came over to check on you and knocked because I was thinking that you might be sleeping or gone.
Biscuits: The plane left for Del Mar on Sunday without me. I’m still standing. I’m still on the trail heading to the Forego.
Gun: What then was that story all about?
Biscuits: Cannot say for sure. I’m a chestnut, not a shrink, although I’m thinking of starting a therapy business. There seems to be a need.
Gun: You never let up with the projects. Rumor around here is that the whole thing was an attempt to get you a more quiet barn. Heard that there was a lot of noise coming from a nearby watering hole for the humans that was just too noisy. Were you upset by the noise?
Biscuits: Not really. I’m an extrovert horse. All of the noise was actually coming from my stall. My ice biscuits are selling fast and furious, and I can’t keep enough horse grooming products on hand for the locals. Since the horse shoe incident upped your profile world wide, every horse here wants my jewellery. They think it’s lucky.
Gun: It sure was for me. I needed that luck.
Biscuits: Gun, be serious. It was all about you. It is always about you. You’re a chestnut.
Gun: Does that also work for other horses?
Biscuits: Unless you’re Zenyatta, that would be – NEIGH!

Peggy just told me there’s another Chestnut on his way to the Spa. Gunnevera left Gulfstream around 10:00 PM tonight by van. Going in the Travers on Saturday. Godspeed; safe and sound all of them. Chestnuts rule! Love and Hugs, JB

That’s Saturday, August 26, for The Travers, not tomorrow. Even a chestnut needs a little time to settle. Make that three chestnuts at Saratoga.

          Dear Max:

Sorry, I didn’t make my post clear. Yes, the Travers is next Saturday. Gunny probably won’t arrive at the Spa until Monday, if they stop to let him stretch his legs. It’s a 21 hour van ride from Gulfstream. Love these Chestnut Club members. Love and Hugs, JB

        • Max

          August 19, 2017 at 5:16 pm

JudyB. My bet is an arrival sooner than Monday because they starte driving at night. I used to do civil war battlefield trips from Richmond to New York non stop in 5 hours in the daytime when the traffic is busier.

          Dear Max:

Yes, could arrive sooner. Peggy said they had stopped in GA for him to stretch when he vanned to Churchill. Will depend on if they drive through or not.

That’s quite a lot of miles in that time. Wow, that’s how long it used to take Russ and I to go from RI to the Spa on a Saturday morning. Love and Hugs, JB
