Down in the edge of the woods a grapevine swings back and forth in the dappled sunlight. Two squirrels, young ones, spend time swinging on the vine, chasing each other up and down and crossing from tree to tree. Their obvious joy in simply being alive is good to watch. we seldom do anything with great joy. Most of us are animated only when it serves a purpose-not a genuine enthusiasm. We are too full of ifs and oughts to find reasons to rejoice. Sometimes a change can jar us into an awareness of life, and that life is intended to be much simpler than what we make it. Jockey Caitlin Forrest dies after horror four-horse race fall in Murray Bridge Gold Cup
TOM BIDDINGTON The Advertiser October 15, 2014
Forrest, 19, died from injuries suffered in the horrific incident when she was flung into the turf and run over by the pack in the race before the Murray Bridge Gold Cup.
From article
Forrest was riding the early leader Collo Voce when the sprinter broke his leg and knuckled on the turn, sending her into the turf and leaving the following jockeys and horses nowhere to go.
Three horses and riders – El Prado Gold (Adrian Patterson), Ethbaal (Justin Potter) and Barigan Boy (Libby Hopwood) – went down in the wake.
Patterson and Potter were able to escape without any serious injury while Hopwood was taken to Flinders Hospital with a suspected broken collarbone and was being treated for concussion.

My curly headed baby is much better today – as advised by the vet, the tablets are making him a bit more subdued, but he had a good sleep last night, cuddled up between us on the bed. Went out for a very brief visit with my little girl last evening – she came straight up to take her treats, and even stood quietly while I adjusted her belly strap. Told her all about the goings on with General, and that I’d be back on Friday for a grooming and removing her rugs with warmer weather approaching. Hugs KathyR
Great report. As I told you earlier our little toy poodle girl, Russ and I had for 17 years before Lola Mae, had seizures and did very well on the med. Hopefully General will feel much better and the seizures will be controlled.
Happy you had a nice visit with Tiny T. Love and Hugs, JB

@Elizabeth, Peggy and Marshall – Thank you for the birthday wishes! Elizabeth, I am fortunate enough to live in Lexington, so I live very close to all the horse farms. I wish all the Dumplings could come here at least once and visit the farms. I’ve been told I’m a very good tour guide!
@Carol in Arkansas – Sending prayers to you and Scooter. A English Springer spaniel named Fletcher lives on my mail route. He’s my buddy. I bring him treats and he follows me around the court he lives on.
RIP to all the jockeys and horses that lost their lives this week. I can’t ever remember there being such a sad week.
Just heard a discussion between Craig “Froggy” Newitt, one of our best jockeys and Andrew Bensley on Skysportsradio. Craig has a young family, and mentioned that he knows his wife worries about him on the track. He then made what I think of as an extraordinary remark that puts what happens on the track into frightening perspective, for equine athlete and jockey. The comment was “when you think about it, we’re putting our lives on the line every 35-40 minutes”. Given that we race 7 days a week Downunder it’s very disturbing to consider that comment. KathyR
Sadly, he’s right. It’s a risk to horse and rider every time they step onto a track, even when training. If you’re going to be a part of the Industry in any way; horse, jockey, owner, trainer, breeder, you have to have courage and a will of iron. I respect each and everyone of them that makes sure their horses are 100% fit to go and bravely take on the risks involved. Love and Hugs, JB
Dear Judy,
You are so right, sad very sad.
But, in every sport we have all these problems.
RIP Juan Saez, and RIP to all the horses that died on 10-14.
Hugs Ingrid.
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Ingrid:
What you say is true; sadly injury and fatality is part of racing. Love and Hugs, JB
You are so right, Judy. I hold my breath every race I watch. Whats frustrating is if you see a horse go down a lot of times the announcers make no mention at all of the horse. I think they will say whether the jockey is okay but not the horse.
KathyR
Dear pamhomeier:
Agree with you – it’s like pulling teeth to find out the name of the equine athlete who has been killed: I’ve got a notebook where I put their names and details: seems wrong to me not to acknowledge the horse. These two deaths have certainly shaken up the local industry. Spring is the biggest time of the year Downunder with the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and the Cox Plate, and the need for large crowds is very, very important. But a high number of first time racegoers will never go again when they see this sort of carnage on the track. An anti-racing group in Victoria posted a huge billboard on one of the major freeways in Melbourne showing a dead horse and the caption “racing kills horses”. The industry was outraged, but with the events of this week both in Australia and in the USA it’s really got them thinking about how deaths can be prevented. In fact a group in Victoria has been working on an improved helmet for the jockeys: it’s still being tested, but early results are very good. That still doesn’t address the issue of two year olds racing. But I’ve rambled on for long enough! Cheers, KathyR
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Pam:
I know, concern should be for both the rider and the horse. They are a team and both of them are equally at risk. The safety of both are equally important. Love and Hugs, JB

Oh, I hope you are able to get a photo of him. Maybe the Ramseys will take him back to the States to race. That would be great. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Zenyatta family:
My curly headed baby is much better today – as advised by the vet, the tablets are making him a bit more subdued, but he had a good sleep last night, cuddled up between us on the bed. Went out for a very brief visit with my little girl last evening – she came straight up to take her treats, and even stood quietly while I adjusted her belly strap. Told her all about the goings on with General, and that I’d be back on Friday for a grooming and removing her rugs with warmer weather approaching. Hugs KathyR

Dear Kathy R:
Great report. As I told you earlier our little toy poodle girl, Russ and I had for 17 years before Lola Mae, had seizures and did very well on the med. Hopefully General will feel much better and the seizures will be controlled.
Happy you had a nice visit with Tiny T. Love and Hugs, JB

So very proud of my Kansas City Royals!!!!! Undefeated in 8 post season games! They are so special!
Debbie G/Kentucky
Hoofray to your Royals! My Reds are out of it, so I’ve been pulling for the Royals. I hope they win it all!
pamhomeier
Thank you Debbie G for supporting the Royals! They have really caught fire after an up and down season! Love every one of them! I was a big fan of your Reds back when they had Johnnie Bench, Pete Rose, etc. That was a special bunch, too.

KathyR
Dear Zenyatta family
Just heard a discussion between Craig “Froggy” Newitt, one of our best jockeys and Andrew Bensley on Skysportsradio. Craig has a young family, and mentioned that he knows his wife worries about him on the track. He then made what I think of as an extraordinary remark that puts what happens on the track into frightening perspective, for equine athlete and jockey. The comment was “when you think about it, we’re putting our lives on the line every 35-40 minutes”. Given that we race 7 days a week Downunder it’s very disturbing to consider that comment. KathyR

Dear Kathy R:
Sadly, he’s right. It’s a risk to horse and rider every time they step onto a track, even when training. If you’re going to be a part of the Industry in any way; horse, jockey, owner, trainer, breeder, you have to have courage and a will of iron. I respect each and everyone of them that makes sure their horses are 100% fit to go and bravely take on the risks involved. Love and Hugs, JB
Ingrid Arnone
Dear Judy,
You are so right, sad very sad.

Dear Pam:
I know, concern should be for both the rider and the horse. They are a team and both of them are equally at risk. The safety of both are equally important. Love and Hugs, JB
pamhomeier
You know, Kathy, I agree about t he 2 year olds racing. They scare me the most, especially if its their maiden. Just no predicting how they could react to everything. Just lots of prayers for horse and jockeys safety before each race.
Janet Newman
Just got back home to Alaska and catching up on the blog again.
Special prayers go out to Carol’s Scooter.
Very sad to see the loss of Juan Saez as well as the loss of the horses.
I have to pay some special attention to my fur baby since I was gone for a longer period than she was accustomed to. She is staring at me, so I better get busy lovin on someone.
KathyR
Dear Janet
You are going to have to do some serious grovelling to your fur baby to explain your absence! Mega treat time I think!
Janet Newman
Absolutely!

Dear Janet:
Bet you got quite a welcome home. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Judy
Heard this race could be moved to the main track. So hope it stays on the grass. But, i’m sure they know best.
Hope I make it till Friday. So worried
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
Don’t know what the weather forecast is for Belmont for Friday. Will have to check. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Dear Peggy:
The forecast for Elmont, NY (where Belmont Race Track is located) for Friday is Sunny; 70%; 0% chance of rain. So if there right, the race should stay on the Turf. Love and Hugs, JB
Judy Berube From Rhode Island
Oops! Sorry, should be if “they’re” right. Love and Hugs, JB
