Happy Monday!
We thought it would be nice to start the week with photos from last week’s visit to Lane’s End. Ann and Jerry went to see Zenyatta and her colt with bags of carrots in tow. Both Z and her son are doing well, enjoying the crisp Kentucky fall air. Zenyatta is healthy and happy, and 12Z is growing fast!
Enjoy!

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (December 15, 2012)—Eblouissante, a half-sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, was scratched Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park, less than 30 minutes prior to what was to be her second start.
An impressive debut winner Nov. 16 for owner-breeder Eric Kronfeld, the 3-year-old daughter of Bernardini and the prolific broodmare Vertigineux banged her hip leaving the receiving barn, losing some of her hide in the process, according to the Betfair Hollywood Park stewards.
This necessitated Eblouissante’s declaration from the afternoon’s fourth, an optional claimer at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track. The Kentucky bred was 1-9 when the scratch was announced.
Whether or not she misses any training remains to be seen, according to John Shirreffs, who also conditioned Zenyatta during a brilliant career that included 19 wins in 20 starts and earnings of $7,304,580.
“She bruised her hip,’’ said Shirreffs. “It’s hard to say (if she’ll miss any training). We’ll have to see how she is when she walks out of the stall (Sunday).’’

There is a nice pic of him on their fb. I took some, but not good, he was in the shadows. They did not do him justice at all, there was no announcement, nobody had any idea who was walking the wrong way up the track. It wasn’t until he was in the winners circle they made an announcement. Most people missed seeing him, and were annoyed. You would think they would make the most of having a superstar on the premises.

Just checked in to see how E did and am sorry to hear of her injury prior to the race. Under John’s capable hands I’m sure she will be ready for her next race soon. In thinking about this incident I, once again, am absolutely amazed that Zenny was sent to race 20 times and always did exactly what she was expected to do and did it perfectly. So many of these equine athletes suffer injuries of one form or another but Z seemed to have perfect health throughout her racing career. That angel John put on her browband protected her from everything and anything. Good luck E…we’ll be waiting for the next race.

Dear Tony:
What you say is so true. Success in racing is dependent on so many things, one of which is just pure good racing luck. Z had it all; talent, soundness and very good racing luck avoiding mishaps, and the angel on her halter. I’s good to know E can resume training and she’ll most likely be racing again soon. Hugs, JB

HRTV showed John putting salve on Ebby’s hip… poor thing I bet it’s sore. Curious what affect this will have in Mr. Kronfeld’s superstition about watching his horses in person since he again flew out to see her. Sure many of you here have read he refused to watch any of Z’s races for fear something would go wrong. Hopefully, he will continue to visit. On another note, anyone have a hint when we may know more about Zenyatta’s DVD?

Eblouissante Avoided Serious Injury in Mishap
Updated: Sunday, December 16, 2012 5:49 PM
Posted: Sunday, December 16, 2012 5:49 PM
Zenyatta’s half sister Eblouissante, scratched from an allowance race Dec. 15 at Betfair Hollywood Park after banging herself in the receiving barn, apparently avoided serious injury.
The 3-year-old filly appeared fine the morning after the incident, according to trainer John Shirreffs.
“She’s good this morning,” said a relieved Shirreffs. “It was a contusion or abrasion. It took some hair off and it’s bruised. We’re treating it topically now. We iced it about four or five times (Saturday). She’s walking good on it so we’re going to take her out and train her and see how she handles it.”
Shirreffs explained how the accident happened.
“The horses go to the receiving barn and the man says put your horses in the stalls,” he said. “They come out of the stalls in post position order, and sometimes they get a little anxious because they see the horse leaving in front of them. Sometimes they want to come out of the door a little more on the muscle than they should.
“She didn’t jump through the door or anything, she just wiggled through the side and leaned a thousand pounds into her hip on the edge of the door. She bruised it pretty good.”
“I called the vet over because when she came out of the door, she didn’t want to put her foot down. She bruised it, so it was stinging her a little bit. We walked her a couple of steps and she wasn’t walking properly. That’s when I asked the vet to come over and take a look at her and said to scratch her.”

Hollywood Park: Eblouissante able to resume training following minor injury
By Steve Andersen
Emiy Shields
The 3-year-old filly Eblouissante, a half-sister to Zenyatta, is a candidate for the La Canada at Santa Anita.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Eblouissante, the 3-year-old half-sister to 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, resumed training on Sunday morning at Betfair Hollywood Park, a day after being scratched from an optional claimer after sustaining a minor injury in the backstretch receiving barn.
Eblouissante sustained an injury to her hip when she struck a stall door about 30 minutes before a scheduled start in Saturday’s fourth race.
Trainer John Shirreffs described the injury as like a “burn mark” that took off some of the hide on the filly’s hip. Saturday, Shirreffs said he was concerned about the way she walked in the minutes after the incident.
After undergoing ice treatment late Saturday and early Sunday, Eblouissante was deemed fit to train on Sunday. She jogged and galloped approximately 2 1/4 miles on Hollywood Park’s main track, Shirreffs said. He described her “as not favoring” the hip.
“She felt and looked normal,” he said. “We iced it about five times.”
Owned by breeder Eric Kronfeld, Eblouissante won her debut in a maiden race over 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 16. Saturday’s race was intended to be her first start against winners.
Sunday was the final day of the Hollywood Park fall meeting. The opening day of the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting is Dec. 26, and Shirreffs said he will look for a race for Eblouissante during the early weeks of that season.
One possible option is the $150,000 La Canada Stakes for 4-year-old fillies over 1 1/16 miles on Jan. 20. Shirreffs had hoped to use Saturday’s race as a prep for the La Canada. If another allowance race is offered, Eblouissante could start in such a race.
“I have to explore every option that is available,” Shirreffs said.
Saturday’s race would have been five years to the day since Zenyatta made the second start of her career at Hollywood Park. Zenyatta won her first 19 races before finishing second to Blame in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in her final start in the fall of 2010.

BLOODHORSE: GRANDEUR IS A VERY TALENTED, 3 YEAR OLD IRISH COLT,
a turn of foot faster than Goldikova’s (at least looks faster), maybe a good
challenger for Little Mike, Point of Entry and Wise Dan ?
Grandeur Handles Turf Cup Distance
By Jack Shinar

Grandeur flies home to win the Hollywood Turf Cup.
Favored Grandeur (IRE) earned his second grade II win from three United States starts when he came from off the pace to capture the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup by three-quarters of a length at Betfair Hollywood Park Dec. 15 (VIDEO).
Runner-up in the Hollywood Derby (gr. IIT) last time out, the Irish-bred Grandeur won in his first try at 1 1/2 miles, which he negotiated in 2:27.95 over firm going. The 8-5 pick in the field of 10 became the first 3-year-old to win the Turf Cup since Bien Bien was put up via disqualification of Fraise in 1992.
Grandeur was ridden to victory by Garrett Gomez for owner Yvonne Jacques and trainer Paddy Gallagher, who took over the conditioning duties from Great Britain’s Jeremy Noseda following the Hollywood Derby. Group-placed in England this summer, Grandeur won the Twilight Derby (gr. IIT), previously called the Oak Tree Derby, in his U.S. debut at Santa Anita Park Nov. 2.
“I really didn’t do much with him. I didn’t have to,” Gallagher said. “This was his third graded race in six weeks. I’m just thankful that the owner (Yvonne Jacques) left him with me. She lives in Europe and I believe the plan was to take him back there, depending on what he did today, and eventually run him in Dubai. I’d sure like to keep him, but he’s going back to Jeremy Noseda.”
A gray or roan gelding by Verglas out of the Desert Sun mare Misskinta, Grandeur was bred by Mrs. Cherry Faeste. He races without Lasix.
Interaction (ARG) made a strong bid along the inside in the stretch to get second under Joe Talamo, unable to reel in Grandeur in the final half-furlong. Optimizer, who led early before settling into a stalking position behind Slim Shadey, was one-paced for third after being in tight quarters at the furlong mark, with Slim Shadey holding on by a head for fourth over Fire With Fire.
Slim Shadey ran the opening half-mile in :49.12 while tracked by Fire With Fire and Optimizer, and stepped the mile in 1:39.77. His lead was reduced to a half-length over Fire With Fire as they reached the quarter pole in 2:04.35. Grandeur, who came from far out of it in his first two stateside starts, was a little closer to the pace this time while saving ground going into the final turn.
Gomez, who won the Turf Cup for the third time, said he was unsure of how to play it with Grandeur.
“I wasn´t happy with the horse I was following (Optimizer), I wanted to find my way around him,” Gomez said. “I thought about sliding my way through Slim Shadey but decided I didn´t like that option. As we approached the final turn I decided to take him outside of Optimizer and when I asked him he went on with it without a problem.”
Racing mid-pack in the stretch after being angled out for the drive, Grandeur surged powerfully under some right-handed urging from Gomez to grab the lead. Grandeur then dug in tenaciously as Interaction gave a valiant effort at odds of 29-1.
“We had an absolutely perfect trip, we never had to leave the rail and everything opened up for us,” Talamo said of his journey aboard Interaction. “He ran a winning race. He just got outrun.”
It was 2 1/4 lengths farther back to Optimizer, the second 3-year-old in the field who lacked room while racing between horses at mid-stretch.
Carrying 120 pounds, Grandeur paid $5.20, $3.60, and $2.60 while topping a generous $106 exacta with the Ron McAnally-trained Interaction, who returned $19.80 and $11.80. Optimizer, from the D. Wayne Lukas stable, paid $3.80 to show in his 14th start of the year.
Slim Shadey and Fire With Fire were followed by Bourbon Bay, who was second in the Turf Cup last year, Tiz Gianni, Grassy, Kindergarden KId, and the Peruvian mare Private Affair.
Grandeur won for the sixth time in 12 starts and boosted his earnings to $398,438. He made his U. S. debut following a win under William Buick in the Dubai Duty Free Conditions Stakes at Newbury Sept. 21 as the 3-2 favorite. In two stakes appearances he had one placing, a third-place effort Aug. 25 in the Totepool.com Winter Hill Stakes (Eng-III) at Windsor.

IT IS NICE TO SEE “V” RACE, BUT HERE IS HER STORY FROM WINTER QUARTER
FARM – SHE WON TWO STARTS AT 4, AND WAS QUITE UNSOUND, BAD ANKLES
AND THEN SHE BECAME A BROODMARE AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED
THEN !!!
“Broken that fall at the farm, VERTIGINEUX continued training in Camden, SC under Mickey Preger. Preger took his time with the big-shouldered filly and observed that her ankles would require extra care. VERTIGINEUX moved on to make three unsuccessful starts at three before moving to the care of Michael Dickinson. Dickinson discovered a filly with tons of talent, but quite unsound. She quickly won two starts at four and retired to Winter Quarter after failing to earn black-type.
Barren her first year, VERTIGINEUX produced an imposing first foal by neighboring Shadwell Farm’s first year sire ALJABR. This filly was so large as a yearling that buyers saw her as time consuming and risky, she fetched a rock bottom $4,000 at the Keeneland September sale. Named WHERE’S BAILEY, she immediately caused her breeder to take notice when she won a stake on the grass in June of her two year old year.”

judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Barb W.:
I couldn’t agree with you more. This is one of the reasons why so many TB’s end up in the kill pens. Not enough owners consider the horse as a living, breathing creature that may not earn his keep because he/she is no longer viable as a racer. Papa Charlie earned $90,214 in his four year career. In racing that’s not much, but it is way more than the average earnings of most racers. Some of them don’t race beyond three years old and end up being slaughtered.
Please do not regret not being able to help finance Papa’s rescue. Your kindness, friendship and concern for him is enough. The EAN members that could help financially were so generous that we had money left over to be used for another rescue. Love and Hugs, JB

Dear Peggy:
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am still working on trying to get that video of Gabby’s race on Nov. 17th. A gentlemen from Coady Photography e-mailed me back and said he will try to put me in contact with someone at Calder who might be able to get a copy of the race for us. Will let you know when I hear more. Love and Hugs, JB

That would be so nice. I hope so hard she’s doing well. Now we’ve just got to pray real hard she stays safe during her career. And all horses.

Dear Zenny fans, Dumplings and All,
Lord god, may we be grateful for our life,
and compassionate toward all those who are
not as fortunate or in distress at this holiday time.
May we hold back nothing, and
hasten to be the ministers of prayer,
like the disciples of Him who went about doing
good in times of need.
Amen
May your Holidays be filled with family and friendship.
Keta
And to you dear Sign!
Many blessings during this special time of year!
Holiday hugs, Keta

Hugs to Paynter…around that big, ole, handsome neck of yours! Add a peppermint along w/that hug!
Max
Ann C. You can really tell from Paynter’s neck that he has regained the weight that he lost. It is a miracle, and we really need more of them.
BTW how are the girls, Moose and Goose? Are they still in training for their next appearance at the fair?
Ann NC
Max,sweet of you to remember the girls.
They are enjoying life on the farm, the Dairy Unit Rocks!
They are getting big, remaining beautiful and are even more bodacious!
Maybe a spring show? Their friend,Diva is the one reaching for the lights of the big city. Diva would be the one, most certain to make it in the big leagues. She is hoping for that,Chick-Fil-A advertising deal.
Moose and Goose are content representing the University Creamery…the best ice cream in town!

Ann,
You are tooo funny, Really Chick Filet commercial, very upscale.

Opps!!!
Chick-fil-A
Hope their is no misinterpretation???
Ann NC
Sign,
Thanks.
Just in case something gets “lost on translation”…. the Chick-Fil-A in my parts is…a fast food joint, serving chicken and is represented by the COWS…all saying eat mor chickin.
The cows are seen up on the bill boards all over the state.
All light in fun,no ill intentions.
Max
Ann C. These cows have a great sense of humor. Please keep us informed about the girls. I love their names and I like to think of them wearing big red bows at Christmas.
