Happy Friday!
Spring is in full swing at Lane’s End! We spent the earlier part of the week in Kentucky visiting Zenyatta and her two boys.
13Z is quite a frisky and independent colt. He’s equally interested in greeting visitors and cruising around the paddock with his mom. You’ll see them running together in the video at the end of this post.
Coz, who is now a very handsome yearling, was always waiting at the fence to greet us.
There are so many more photos from this visit, and we’ll be putting up brand new photo galleries next week.
Enjoy!

Thanks Keta – would have missed this entirely. Guess I’ll have to ramp up the VCR – just realized that you said 9 PM PACIFIC!
Keta
Terry, Trina, Karen and SoCal fans,
I have a question that you might have the answer for.
Joe Talamo is a gifted winning rider.
Yet, once again, he does not have a Derby horse.
Any thoughts on why?
Hugs, Keta
Janet Newman
Keta,
I was wondering that myself. He is a very talented young man and I think he is a smart rider. The one chance he had with I Want Revenge was derailed due to the horse having a injury.
I was hoping he would have picked up one of the later entrants, but was not meant to be.
Terry Crow
I would say it is because he does not have a working relationship with any of the trainers who have horses entered in the Derby. As far as I know, he doesn’t ride for Pletcher, who has five. That leaves 15, with the only California based trainer being Doug O’Neill. If any of the Baffert horses had started, chances are he would be on one of them. I agree with your analysis of his riding ability. But, how many jockeys are there? A lot of them are not riding in the Derby.
Keta
Terry
I was also thinking that there may be East Coast vs West Coast bias.
Smoking Joe hasn’t ridden in the East so he may not have developed
the connections/following there.
But, that is why he has an agent.
Just musing before the weekend
Hugs, Keta
Terry Crow
Good point. However, his agent was probably schmoozing Baffert and Hollendorfer, who figured to have Derby horses. When you take note of the jocks that do have mounts, you have to wonder why he isn’t riding. There is a lot of politics in horse racing.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
Dear Max
I am going to try to stay positive.. They are saying that VyJack being a temperamental horse is going to be bothered by the crowd. I am worried, but I will try to stay positive. They say he is very intelligent so I hope he can keep his head straight.
Peggy (N) South Georgia
I think they have got VyJack’s odds at 15-1
Terry Crow
VyJack has more to worry about than the crowd, having drawn PP#20.
Ann NC
Do they play,The Impossible Dream in the jocks room?
Terry Crow
Great Man of La Mancha reference, Ann. Unfortunately, I think VyJack is tilting at windmills. but, for the sake of his fans, I hope he runs well.
Ann NC
Absolutely, TC. I love The Vyjack.
We must remember, I’ll Have Another came from PP 19, in the mud and won.
Like you and Judy B. like to say, ” Even when you know, you never know.”…Here’s to safe trips for all of these great horses.

Saw interview with Black Onyx’s jockey before the draw…said they could run from anywhere but really did not want #1…so that’s what they got….hmmmmm
……
The “talking heads” after the draw said
…the worse draw was Vyjack…post will not suit him at all
…all 5 of TP’s horses did well…but TP looked immensely relieved after Verrazano’s draw
….Calvin will be happy…he can get to the rail quick from #3

I just posted on the forum side that I seem to have a problem…I have cheered a bunch of these guys on to get them to the derby and now I am suppose to cheer for only one….aint gonna happen…I have a list whittled down to my “sexy seven” and I intend to holler them and the other 13 all home…I am a non-denominational hollerer….that’s my story and I am sticking to it

Amen, Carol. If I could get my head to over rule my heart, I might be able to pick just one. Love Orb, Oxbow (lousy post) Palace Malice, Black Onyx (another lousy post)and Revolutionary. No way I can pick just one. Will put win money on MyLute because of Rosie. The winner will probably be some horse most of us have hardly heard of. That 20 horse field is just too big. Of course, like Ken Ramsey so would be okay with the Kitten horse.
Trina Nagele in So Cal--PUR
Congrats on having hubby home again from the hospital! And as for choosing whp to root for in the Derby, it’s not just choosing among the horses, but among the jockeys and trainers too! My three sentimental favorites among the jockeys: Mike, Rosie and Kevin. High hoof to all, and safe trip for everyone.
Sandy (Northeast Ohio) PUR, PUJ
Carol,
Glad to hear that your hubby is home and “resting comfortably” as we say :-)
I agree, there seem to be many nice horses here – do you want to share your “sexy seven”??

Zenyatta’s Tapit colt has a very pretty refined head. I always liked Tapit a lot when he was racing. It will be interesting to see who the Mosses choose as a mate for Zenyatta for her next foal.

Thanks so much for the TV coverage lineup. I have to see what channel NBCSN is. I only wish the events being covered such as: Mine that Bird, were a little later than 4pm EDT. Most of us aren’t home from work at that hour. Maybe they will have replays. Hope so.

Did I see that El Vino is at Evangeline Downs in LA? I grew up and I know that track is pretty low!!!! You would not believe it. I hope he does OK because that is one hell hole, sinking to the lows after training Zenyatta!!!
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Cheryl:
Here is the stats chart on El Vino from Equibase. He won his last two starts at Sam Houston on 2/15/13 and 3/11/13. You’re right, there’s a workout listed at Evangeline Downs on 4/19/13.
His Claiming Price in his race in March was $35,000. That’s the good news. Let’s hope he keeps running in high level Claiming races and does well. Don’t know why the move from SH to ED, but a lot of EAN rescue group members are keeping track of him.

For those who are followers of El Vino on his Facebook page, the fact that he had been moved to Evangeline Downs following the closure of the Sam Houston thoroughbred meet in March is common knowledge. Sam Houston is now hosting quarter-horse racing—-not in El Vino’s wheelhouse! There are people connected with El VIno’s page, who have devoted countless hours, for love of this horse, in safeguarding his future. Keep the faith..

I know it’s late but I had to stay up to write this as uninspiring as it is but its been on my mind so here goes.
Its regarding our young Prince ZT’s photo’s starting from the one’s after the barn.
The 2nd photo after the barn shows him in full speed negotiating a corner and it shows how balanced he is, with the perfect form and no lose of speed as he charges on.The determination and focus in his eyes, Unbelievable!.
The 4th photo—Just love his face, reminds me of a gazelle, his eyes, ears, mouth, just perfection. I had to take a 2nd look because at first I thought it was a painting.
The 7th photo—Reminds me of a Cheeta running, perfect posture for going from 0 to 60 in one secondl
The 8th frame—He is rearing up and saying, mom look at me, am king of the world, and so will you be young Prince.
The 9th photo—He seems to be saying, look how big I am already, am almost as big as my mom!
Then comes my sweet Prince CoZmic One with his soulful eyes waiting for his ‘mama’ and wondering if she would come. How sweet to see them together, all I could say was ‘He remembers’
Its already past 3 am and am still up and have an early day tomorrow, better go catch some sleep.
Good morning to all, hope you all have a Blessed day. It is well. LOL to all.

I saw a show last night on PBS the Lippizanas, I know I have spelt that wrong, it was truly amazing.
They are the most noble of horses apart from Z and her babies. The breeding farm is so beautiful, they live in a herd until they are four then they start their training.
The stallions are magnificent, all born black and most of them turn white, they say there should always be one black one for good luck. The mares and stallions are selected into the breeding program and the babies have the longest legs, pure joy.
Hope some of you saw it too.
Donna
Ann NC
They are beautiful and performed in our city. Their performance was fantastic, hoping they will come back.
PBS is great.

Dear Ann:
Russ and I saw them when they came to Rhode Island some years back. They are wonderful. Thanks to PBS, I got to see them again and learned a lot about how they are raised and trained. Love PBS too. Hugs, JB
judy berube from Rhode Island
Dear Donna:
Watched the Lipizzaner horses last night too on our local PBS station. Wonderful to see. I love the way the handlers treat the stallions and how they keep them all together placing dominant personalities and more affable personalities in stalls across from each other. The stallions are not isolated and are calm and not combative toward each other. They have a special bond with their rider who is their caretaker for their whole life.
The mares are highly valued as well and have to be successful in their required skills (even though they do not perform as the stallions do) to be considered for breeding.
There are 30 to 50 foals born every year and the only thing they did not address was what happens to the horses that don’t make it to the performance ring. They did touch on the fact that not every foal develops into a performer or a broodmare. Hope they have an adoption program of some kind for the ones that don’t make the cut. Hugs, JB Hugs, JB

@Michele Moore–special prayers for you today. Please report in when you can., Hugs.

I’m having a hard time picking a favorite in the Derby, too. But Falling Sky, with a trainer named Terranova, tickles me. (I watch science fiction shows.) Of course, I saw my first Derby on tv in 1958. I was 7 years old and thought a horse named Silky Sullivan had such a beautiful name that he would surely win. And then came Tim Tam to win it. My pick finished far back. So every year I pick one, but really just watch and cheer for them all.
Terry Crow
Tim Tam was a great horse and hardly anyone remembers him. Much like Charismatic, he was going for the triple crown when he was injured during the Belmont.
carol in arkansas
@Debra..you have great taste…Silky was a beautiful horse …and a fan favorite …he did it his way….there is a story about him that one of his owners was under doctors orders not to watch his races…too much strain on the heart…
DebraZ
Terry and carol: glad I’m not the only one who remembers. I’ve watched faithfully ever since.
shirleeinindy
Debra, That was my first Derby to attend. The infield was nothing like it is now and 3 little school girls stayed out there all day with no trouble at all. Next time I was in the infield was the 100th and boy was that different. You could get high just walking throught the tunnel. Probably safe for me to go back now since at my age no one is going to be asking for me to lift my shirt and show my assets.
I think Calumet just has one more winner after Tim Tam.
Terry Crow
If one is to read and study history of the Derby, the infield would be a good place to start. A lot of strange things have happened out there.
Ann NC
Thanks for sharing your great story, Shirlee. The infield can be full of adventures, well so can the entire track for that matter.

Simply adorable, Barbara. A baby elephant may be the best cared for of all baby animals. They never go for more than a few minutes without being stroked by the mother or another in a breeding herd. And to watch them take a mud bath is always entertaining. They are among our favorites on safari.

@Terry Crow– TimTam won the first Derby I ever watched. I was hooked from then on.
Terry Crow
He was a good one to start with. I put Tim Tam and Charismatic in the same category as both were injured during the Belmont. Big Brown’s case was somewhat different. His connections knew he was injured before he ran and he shouldn’t have competed. At least the connections of I’ll have another had the good sense not to run him. That is just about the only good thing I can say about his owner. As I recall, Tim Tam’s jockey was a California guy, Ismael Valenzuela, known as Milo.
Lynn Martin
Any word who Z will be bred to this time, or will they wait until next year to breed her?
LauraJ (Cincinnati OH)
No word yet on her next beau.
It’s likely that she will be bred this year for a mid-late April foal. There is no physical reason that she needs a year off at this time. Look for her to get a break in 2014 or 2015, depending on how her owners feel about having a May foal.
Lynn Martin
That is what I was wondering. How late in the year is too late?
