Breeders’ Cup Weekend Recap

Zenyatta, Ann and the Breeders’ Cup Sports and Racing Excellence Award.

Last weekend was the 10th anniversary of Zenyatta’s 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic victory, and we were at Lane’s End Farm to celebrate with The Queen herself.

Zenyatta was delighted to receive her Sports and Racing Elegance Award. Thank you Breeder’s Cup and all her fans for  supporting and honoring her in such a beautiful way! She thoroughly enjoyed every moment!

I thank YOU, Ann, for being such an ambassador for taking care of our horses after their careers end. Of making sure they are well taken care of and not tossed aside, or allowed to enter into situations of fatality to incur insurance proceeds to cover career losses. I thank you for continuing to be a strong representation of responsibility and after care with the ones who have graced your ownership.

Thanks so much for including our group photo of the Z-Dumplings, along with all the wonderful pictures of Zenny and Ann — which we never tire of! We did have a good time at the Breeder’s Cup, and got together for a big dinner on the 2nd night. Various smaller groups of us also met for other meals, and at Clocker’s Corner, and for photos at the big cutout of Zenny with Mike aboard. It was nice to have better opportunities to get to know more of the Z-Dumplings. We have all been following Zenyatta for so many years now, and we enjoyed renewing those connections.

This has just made my day. Zenyatta and Ann spending quality time together, it doesn’t get any better. Ten years after the greatest race of all time, and the Queen is still getting awards. Zenyatta you are the Queen and will always be number One. Thank You to everyone on Team Z for continuing to share her with all of us.I hope Coz, Zi, Zelda, and the soon to be new arrival are all doing well.

Today we remember our beloved Dessie who died aged 27ys.He ‘called’his family to be with him at the end and he passed as he lived….His own way.Much as I love the flat my heart will always belong to the chasers and if you watch this video you will understand why.Sleep tight Dessie.Forever remembered.

      Dear Sheena,

What a thrilling race! Desert Orchid was totally amazing — his beautiful grey (almost white) color made such a spectacular scene. Dessie was indeed a standout in the crowd! I understand your love for the chasers — they really do go the distance.
RIP Dessie, you were one of a kind.

      Thanks for sharing, Sheena.

      Dear Judy,

Thanks a million for posting the link to Steve Haskin’s article. Nobody does it like SH, and no horse does it like Secretariat! I love remembering that TC run, especially the Belmont which was out-of-this-world — truly incredible. I get emotional every time I watch that stretch run! Love Big Red, my hero.

      Dear Sheena:

Wishing Hovis a safe and complete procedure that will finally make healing possible. Poor baby has been through it. Sending prayers.

After visiting Hudson yesterday, stopped by the farm to see Charlie. The four horses that are still recuperating from the virus were together in the paddock next to him. All of them and Charlie were wearing their warm blankets. Been very cold here this week. Figgi came over to say hello and she was not as warm to the touch as she was when I last saw her. She, her mom Willow, Fancy (who’s 31) and Haley (a beautiful Leopard Appaloosa) all looked better to me than they did on Monday. Hopefully, they’ll be fully over it by next week and there will be no more horses that come down with this awful virus. It’s over two months since this started and after going through practically the whole herd (about 40 horses), just now seems to be finally abating.

Goodnight. Love and Hugs, JB, LM and all the Sweeties
