Happy Derby Weekend!

Morning at Lane's End. Photo by Tyler Matson

Happy Friday!

Are you excited about the Kentucky Derby? We are, and we want to wish the best of luck to all of the horses and their connections!

Zenyatta and Baby Z have been in the Kentucky news recently. Be sure to check out both of these video segments:

Born To Run—WDRB 41 Louisville and Zenyatta’s First Foal A Handful—wave3.com

We will be returning next week with the second installment of our Lane’s End interview series, this time with assistant broodmare manager Donna Vowles. In the meantime, here’s a short video that was taken in early April by Ann Moss. She really captured Z’s excitement about peppermint treats!

Enjoy your weekend!

    @Terry Crow,

Dear Mr. Grand Potentate of the Rednecks.

I, proud and humble president of the Indiana Chapter, after careful thought and consideration, do hereby cast the vote, representing the great rednecks of the great state of Indiana, YEA in favor of “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road” as our theme song.

    Humbly submitted,
    Darlene Daniels

Yeah, Sandy, a more “colorful” description occurred to me (involving brown), but really, Darlene made such a great effort, and did such a wonderful job of it, almost like speechifying at a po-litical convention, that one can only honor her.

@Dawn Conrad, It was so good to see your post the other day. Hoping and praying all goes well for you. If I may ask, when in June are you and Shari planning your trip to Lexington? If you prefer to keep it private I understand.

Ingrid, I am praying for your Mom and you. Hang in there, it may not be as bad as you think it might be. But know, either way you have friends here, giving you and your Mom prayers and support.

@DARLENE DANIELS– yes, there are many modern-day “horse whisperers.” The one I am most familiar with is Pat Parelli. There are several famous ones, but I’m afraid I’ll get their names wrong if I list them. Also, (apologies for mentioning this again) a great book was by Joe Camp, the trainer for the movie dog, Benji. It is called “The Soul of a Horse”.
I have overy often wished that Thoroughbred trainers would employ more listening to the horses. I’m glad “our” John does!.

OK, all as promised earlier, here is the end of the saga of the tomato plants.

Due to work schedules, weather delays, and anticipation of Derby week (mine), planting of flowers and tomato plants took a back seat. Last Tuesday when the weather was finally good, I went out to garage (where the tomator plants and my pansys were being kept until suitable planting were being kept) and much to , my dismay I discovered the tomato plants were missing. With a sunken heart and knot in my throat I looked around to the front of my home, by the front door, to see if “Jethro”, otherwise known as my husband had really planted tomato plants by the front door. Much to my relief, nothing was planted there. A little while later “Jethro”, my husband, came around, I said reluctancly, with heart in throat, “honey, what happenened to the tomato plants? He said, “Oh I planted them out by the garage”. Perfect. Thank you God!!

@Karen Gogue-Here is the Shoe story I promised. I apologize to all who have seen it before. By the way, Crapper is not part of my official title. In the 50s and 60s, horse racing was the sport in Southern California. The Dodgers did not arrive until 1958 and the Lakers started playing here in 1960. We did have the Rams, but pro football was not then what it is now. The average daily attendance at places like Santa Anita and Hollywood Park was about 30,000 with much higher crowds on Saturday. There was no Sunday racing. The local CBS outlet would televise a “race of the week” on Saturday live from whatever track happened to be in operation. The host was Gil Stratton, the local TV sports guy whose main claim to fame was that he had been an umpire in the old Pacific Coast League. The station would televise the race, which was always called by Harry Henson, even when it was at Santa Anita. Even though Joe Hernandez had been the track announcer since SA opened, he had been slipping and I remember him calling the wrong horses . He was using the names of the horses in the third race. Trouble is, it was the second race. But, I digress. At the conclusion of the race, Stratton would interview the winning jockey. Shoe won so often in those days that it was referred to as the Shoemaker show. Anyway, Shoe had won another one and Stratton was getting ready to interview him. Remember, this was live TV. Just as Stratton was about to conduct the interview, you could hear this guy yelling “That race was fixed. I have the proof here in my back pocket.” There was pandemonium until security hustled the guy away. then the interview started. Stratton asked Shoe what he thought of the race. Shoe said “Never mind the race. I kinda wanted to see what that guy had in his back pocket.” I literally fell off my chair laughing. I will never forget it.

Here is today’s horse joke. A lady was expecting the plumber at 10 am. Ten o’clock came and went, no plumber. 11, 12, 1 no plumber. The lady concluded that he wasn’t coming and went out to do some errands. While she was away, the plumber arrived. He knocked on the door. The lady’s horse, who was in the back yard, said “Who is it?” He replied “It’s the plumber.” He thought it was the lady who had asked. When she didn’t come to the door to let him in, he knocked again. Once again, the horse said “who is it?” Again he replied, “It’s the plumber.” Once again, the lady did not come to the door as he thought she would. He tried two more times, getting the same reply from the horse. The plumber became enraged and knocked down the door. At that point, he suffered a heart attack and fell dead in the doorway. The lady came home from running her errands only to see the door off its hinges and a corpse lying in the doorway. “A dead body,” she exclaimed, “Who is it?” The horse then said “It’s the plumber.”

Here are today’s redneck jokes-You might be a redneck if there is a hot water bottle hanging from your shower curtain. You might be a redneck if, three weeks after the circus, you are still talking about the elephant’s “accident.” You might be a redneck if you have ever read the entire Sunday paper sitting in the bathroom. You might be a redneck if you go to a party and the punch bowl flushes. You might be a redneck if, when you run out of beer, your friends go home. You might be a redneck if all of your relatives’ cars have a “tag stolen” sign in the rear window. You might be a redneck if the beer truck goes house-to-house in your neighborhood.

I hope that you had a truly magical day—you certainly deserve it after all the magic you and YOUR ANN have brought into all of our lives!!!Your continuing sharing of all things Z,and now Baby Z, is such a blessing to so many. What an example and inspiration you two are to the whole racing scene. I will never be able to thank you enough for all you have done!!

@ Nancy in NJ-A belated Happy Birthday to you too!! I remember getting to be 65 and being amazed to still feel like a kid—guess that just isn’t going to change. I’m 73 1/2 now and still feel that way–of course,Barnaby has given me a completely new lease on life–so I’ll be a “little girl with her first pony” for the rest of my life now.

This past weekend when I went down to see him, they were spraying water in the arena to keep the dust down and he was just not sure how he liked that so we didn’t ride–but had a wonderful day anyway. More later, have to go tio lunch!

Younger. Have not seen Clint on the episodes

Australia: Black Caviar, who runs Saturday in the Goodwood at Morphetville, has admirer in Shirreffs
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form
The undefeated Australian star Black Caviar has a fan in trainer John Shirreffs, a man who knows a thing or two about managing a mare on a winning streak.
Last month, Shirreffs watched on television as Black Caviar stretched her unbeaten streak to 20 races with a comfortable win in the Sportingbet Classic at Morphettville Racecourse, near Adelaide, Australia.
Chances are Shirreffs will be watching again when Black Caviar makes her final start of the Australian season in Saturday’s Group 1 Goodwood Stakes at Morphettville. The race over about six furlongs on turf will be Black Caviar’s last start before she is sent to England for the Royal Ascot meeting next month.

Slaughter of horses per se was not expressly illegal. However, meat has to be inspected by the USDA, and for several years, inspection of horse meat was de-funded. What happened last year is that an appropriations bill was passed that, amontg its many provisions, restored funding for the inspection of horse meat at U.S. facilities. The senate bill is a separate entity that would ban horse slaughter outright and ban export for the purpose of slaughter. (That’s if I understand the bill correctly, which is not a given.)

@ Dawn Conrad–It was SO good to have you posting again–and I’m so glad that you enjoy hearing about Barnaby!!I think he is so special–and he seems to believe now that he is too!! He acts like he thinks he is royal–and I am not about to tell him anything different! When some of the other people who have their horses at the ranch see how I spoil him, they say their horses are going to want to come and live with me!! I am so sorry that you have another tumor to monitor–I pray that it will not grow and that it will turn out not to be dangerous in any way!!

@ Ingrid–SO sorry about your mother’s accident!! Know you are surrounded by love and prayers.

@ Trina-How DO you just keep getting better and better at these wonderful poems. The one for Z’S JERRY is one of your best ever!!!What a gift for him to treasure!!

I sent off a donation for Marlene–hope we are able to save those sweet ones! There is not a day that I don’t thank Marlene in my heart for all she does—she saved my Barnaby!!! I never look at him without realizing that he came close to losing his life in a horrible way. I will never take the life of my sweet boy for granted and will always be thankful for the string of miracles that brought us together!

I have a fun project in mind that I am planning to do as soon as I return from the trip I begin on Friday evening. I will be back to work on the 24th. While I am gone,if I have computer access, will let you know where I am and how it is going. I surely hope that I am able to see Sue F and Sally B while I am in Wisconsin–that would be TOO CUTE!! @ Shari –A belated congrats on Teacher’s Day!! Judy-Thanks for the link. Steve Cauthen still has a bit of an English accent from his time over there. When he rode at Santa Anita after winning the triple crown, it was a disaster for him. Anyone who is interested can look up his race record that year. However, he literally fled to England after that. I would like to say something about Alydar, the horse that Affirmed so narrowly defeated in all of the triple crown races. This fine horse came within a length of winning the TC himself and was part of one of the biggest attempted frauds in horse racing history. Anyone who looks this up will be outraged. Lafitt Pincay told me personally that Affirmed was the best horse he had ever ridden.

I was pleased and impressed to just read above, where you finally cast your important official vote for our anthem (https://staging.zenyatta.com/news/happy-derby-weekend#comment-151424). I kept thinking you were going to hold out, as you had, perhaps tactfully, not commented at all about this pungent subject, as it picked up steam, created a stink, and took on a life of its own, since just over two weeks ago, when Barbara Wood asked her fateful & provocative skunk question. I can easily and readily imagine why you and perhaps others, might wish to avoid “jumping into” the indelicate subject matter, on this, our Zenyatta website. That’s fine. But I am nonetheless pleased you voted. Thanks.

Dear Vicki B and Grand Pooba Terry Crow:

Absolutely am laughing out loud at your witty post. The truth is, I did not even realize the Presidents of all Redneck Chapters were supposed to cast their vote until I read the Grand Pooba’s post stating that he had not heard from me yet. That prompted me to vote right away in favor of the “Dead Skunk” song as our Redneck anthem.

I am very familiar with the experience of trying to get rid of the terrible, pungent odor of skunk on a dog. Russ and I went through the whole routine with our Greyhound, Lou Lou, when she was the recipient of a direct hit by a skunk in our yard. It was many weeks, before the smell was gone from her fur. Love and Hugs, JB

      Dear Judy B,

We had so many skunks at our barn where Jethro lived, often the pungent smell
of one crushed by a car tire would permeate the barn and all of our horses.

So when we rode outside, all of the horses smelled like skunks.
      It was very funny.

Good morning all! Good morning, Z. and Baby Z.

Maybe, for Union Rags, the field in the Belmont will be smaller, and he will get a better trip. The Derby always scares me, with those 20 horses jostling for position, flying out of the gate.

@the rednecks–all this silliness is in good fun and a welcome relief from the stresses of the day. That being said, I fear there is one more detail to the skunk story that I had mercifully forgotten. About the time we found the dead skunk in our pool, there was a family of raccoons under our house duking it out with a skunk family. It was awful! We almost never got rid of the smell and the furry ones. That surely elevates me to the status of a redneck among rednecks. Actually, that would make a good joke. But it happened!

Here’s my e-mail to NTRA. Hugs, JB

        Dear Sirs:

Please address the issue of race horses being sold to KILL buyers and
transported to brutal death at slaughter plants in Canada and Mexico. This is
happening at Mountaineer Racetrack, Beulah Race Park and other tracks every day.
Thousands of race horses (and other breeds) every year are being brutally and
painfully killed. When will you and the Jockey Club crack down on the people
operating the sale, transport and killing of our beloved race horses. Please do
something now. This practice of throwing away young, vibrant lives has got to
stop. These horses need to have monies set aside for them at registration for
their maintenance when they can no longer earn their keep. They need a chance to
be retrained for a different career in a different venue or to be adopted as a
        riding horse, therapy horse, etc.

Fans of horse racing, half of which are women, are strongly and vehemently
against the slaughter of our beautiful, innocent Thoroughbreds. We love racing,
but we are not willing to participate in betting on races as long as the horses
are treated so horribly. We follow our favorites, past and present, because we
love horses and we will never give up our passion to stop the slaughter. It is
wonderful that owners and breeders of Champions make sure their horses are cared
for and maintained after there racing, stud or broodmare careers are over. But,
what about the Low Level Claimers; the backbone of the Industry. They are the
ones being sold to Kill Buyers and brutally slaughtered. They deserve a chance
        at life after racing too.

It can happen to any horse, though; Ferdinand, Exceller. Sometimes Allowance
Horses and High Level Claimers meet the same fate as they drop down the claiming
ranks or change hands to unscrupulous owners and trainers.

Stopping slaughter will save the horses and the Industry.

        Thank you,

        Judy Berube

          Dear Grand POOBAH Terry Crow:

Judy, let us know if you get a response. Maybe, someone should include a video of the Slaughter house and what the horses go through. That would surely get a lot of attention from those in Congress and that have a vote in this situation! Such a horrible situation these horses go through while awaiting death! :(

          Dear Heidi:

You are so right. I can’t bear to watch any of the graphic videos. I know what happens. But, maybe some of the Powers That Be in the Industry and Congress should see them and then they might act to stop the slaughter of these beautiful innocents. Hugs, JB

          @Judy Berube,
Thank you! This is excellent. I feel really good about us girls voicing our concern, now that we know we REALLY MATTER to Thoroughbred racing. What would they be without US? Just 49 percent? This makes me feel so empowered.

          Yay for us!
